The Dividing Line, is an independent film by Jeff Stewart. Filmed in Palestine in 2009 and 2010. Jeff interviewed dozens of people for this film, including some of the poorest and most oppressed, to some of the most influential people in Palestine, including ministers to President Mahmoud Abbas, and Dr. Mustafa Barghouti former minister to Yasser Arafat, and now world renowned Palestinian human rights activist (nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize in 2010) Jeff logged in more than 600 miles on foot,1500 miles by car, and spent hundreds of hours of research to make The Dividing Line. This film is perhaps the most comprehensive and down to earth look at what life is really like for Palestinian citizens to date.

Deeply saddening and distressing. I also thought I had some concept of how bad things are, but I needed to be educated.
Godspeed Dr. Barghouti.

Hi Dennis tragedy does not sum up the ghetto
of Gaza and of all people you would have thought
the jews would not have let this happen But for
many reasons it has. It is hard to comprehend
how small this area is 5miles wide by 25miles
long I heard a news anchor say the other night.
The home of just under 2 million people many
under 18 and refugees from other parts of
Palestine. In one sense it would be better to
evacuate them all and set them up elsewhere
thru out the world. Which has happened to many
of their fellow countrymen over the years. But
that would be giving in to more ethnic cleansing.
Its got to a stage where the two state solution
is not exceptable by factions of the Israeli
government and they won't be satisfied until
Gaza is incorporated and the inhabitants that
are left become Israeli arabs and the rest either
leave or are expelled.
The west bank may also be targeted with ever
increasing tensions over Jeruselam. This could
be why ISIS was set up to create the conditions
that Israel will be able to crush a Arab uprising
once and for all and create a greater Israel.
Problem Reaction Solution.....

“The Unfolding of Yinon’s ‘Zionist Plan for the Middle East’: The Crisis in Iraq and
the Centrality of the National Interest of Israel,” illustrates how the ethno-sectarian
fragmentation and internecine warfare between Shiites and Sunnis is in line with
the Yinon plan to enhance Israel’s security and was ignited by the neocon-inspired
US invasion of Iraq in 2003. Netanyahu and the neocons currently view Iran as a
greater threat in the Middle East than ISIS, and while they advocate US military
intervention, they emphasize that such intervention should not empower Iran,

Shuja’iyya massacre, which had been carried out just over a week earlier, on July

G'day Dennis,
Just a quick question bloke.
In the US main stream media has there been any presentation of the Palestinian situation in Gaza & the West Bank?
I often forget that the US system is different to the Australian one.
Here's a recent report from Australia's 60 Minutes (aired July 27th, 2014) which clearly shows the plight of the Palestinians:
SXVvaXgtCSg
Back in February Australia's oldest Current Affairs program, 4 Corners, aired a documentary it made called 'Stone Cold Justice (http://www.abc.net.au/4corners/stories/2014/02/10/3939266.htm)'. It shows the problems for Palestinians living in the Occupied West Bank caused by the Israeli Government and Settler support system. In particular it focuses on the effect IDF detention of children and violence against those detained children has on the entire Palestinian community as well as those directly affected children. If you watch it take note of the Israeli Settler talking about her conversations with Sharon back in the 1970's and compare that to the section of Barghouti's presentation about Sharon's plan.

Here's the UNICEF report referenced in the documentary:
Children in Israeli Military Detention: Observations and Recommendations (http://www.unicef.org/oPt/UNICEF_oPt_Children_in_Israeli_Military_Detention_ Observations_and_Recommendations_-_6_March_2013.pdf)

2010 documentary presentation by Barghouti on the story of the creation and present reality of the "Israel" Nation-State from the perspective of the Palestinian people.
Be aware -- contains some disturbing images (eg amputations, dead children, dead bodies).
It's difficult to post anything about the Israel occupation that doesn't include "disturbing images" because the entire thing is "disturbing". The use by the IDF of DIME weapons (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dense_Inert_Metal_Explosive), white phosphorus and other experimental weapons that it is alleged Israel is field testing (http://electronicintifada.net/blogs/rania-khalek/israel-firing-experimental-weapons-gazas-civilians-say-doctors) (as they have anti-crowd measures for years) is part of the reason that Palestinians are protesting the injustices of the system...

To those who think that Israeli's are the problem...
Here's what Israeli protesters do on a daily basis:
QG2ju8990Rw
This small group is called Ta'ayush and they are 'Israelis & Palestinians striving together to end the Israeli occupation and to achieve full civil equality through daily non-violent direct-action' (source (http://www.taayush.org/)).
In the intensely nationalist climate that exists in Israel at the moment and remembering that Ta'ayush operates in Area C (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Bank_Areas_in_the_Oslo_II_Accord#Area_C) of the Occupied Territories, where Settler violence is commonplace, they are still accompanying Palestinians on their land as a non-violent form of protest.
This is Gandhi's direct-action activism at its best:
It was hard work getting the owners of the land to come with us today. They’re afraid. These fields and grazing grounds abut on the settlements of Tekoa IV and Nokdim. It’s dangerous to come here. Guy and Ezra have both been savagely beaten by settlers in these parts. Ezra warns me today: there’s a 50% chance that we’ll be attacked by settlers or soldiers or both, anyway they’re all the same.

These three videos expose the most shocking picture of planned persecution, abuse, theft and murderous GENOCIDE of Palestinians, quite opposite to the picture painted in international controled media. Here I see a group of Zionists, backed and paid by other Zionists who have the U.S.A. budget and banking system under their sole control. They have established Israel as a beachhead for WWIII to eliminate everything Arab and grab all their OIL. It is the money of U.S. Citizens misappropriated in an evil plan of world takeover in which the Vatican is the head of the Bankers in London and the U.S.A. is the Military arm to bully and kill Americans and the rest of the world under Agenda 21 in just the same way they have closed off Israel to the Palestinians and nibbled away at their land like mice while exterminating them surely. Let us identify all these Zionists by NAME AND ADDRESS AND REMOVE THEM FROM POWER. Open up the newspapers and media. Close them down by not patronizing them or their advertisers. Get the word out to the present and former soldiers of the country, because they are destroying the future of their own families by their cooperation with these vagabond usurpers of power. These bankers have used people's stolen wealth to pay off fighting groups and incite them against one another to bring down the Arab banks and countries and steal their oil. This was not difficult, since they installed the corrupt heads of those countries in the first place, sold them arms with which to create an adversary to excuse their attacks upon countries. The City States of City of London, the Vatican and Washington (the military arm) all need to be abolished and their occupiers torn from their seats of power or all human kind is going to be murdered off shortly.

For those who have watched the first video posted, or the one posted by panopticon in Post#8, (narrated by Dr. Mustafa Barghouti), a word is repeated, and I had to find a transcript of one of his videos to find that he is saying the word "bantustan" which was unfamiliar to me. Of course I am familiar with South African apartheid, but somehow that particular word never caught my ear. It comes from the tribal name "Banu" and really means a segregated and separated enclave. It is obvious that the occupier/oppressor wants to fracture the society, by physically separating people - almost like clusters of small prisons.
I pretty much got the word's meaning from the context of Dr. Barghouti's narration, but knowing the etymology of the word gives greater meaning and context.
I thought I'd pass this along in case there were any others that were unfamiliar with the word "bantustan (http://www.thefreedictionary.com/Bantustan)."

G'day Dennis,
I don't know if you're familiar with the award winning documentary 'The Law In These Parts'.
It has interviews with the military judges, officers and persons who formulated and administered the foundation of the law used by the IDF in the Occupied Territories.
9ntIzxofaCI
Can a modern democracy impose a prolonged military occupation on another people while retaining its core democratic values?
Since Israel conquered the territories of the West Bank and Gaza Strip in the 1967 war, the military has imposed thousands of orders and laws, established military courts, sentenced hundreds of thousands of Palestinians, enabled half a million Israeli "settlers" to move to the Occupied Territories and developed a system of long-term jurisdiction by an occupying army that is unique in the entire world.
The men entrusted with creating this new legal framework were the members of Israel's military legal corps. Responding to a constantly changing reality, these legal professionals have faced (and continue to face) complex judicial and moral dilemmas in order to develop and uphold a system of long-term military “rule by law” of an occupied population, all under the supervision of Israel's Supreme Court, and, according to Israel, in complete accordance with international law.
The Law In These Parts explores this unprecedented and little-known story through testimonies of the military legal professionals who were the architects of the system and helped run it in its formative years. The film attempts to ask some crucial questions that are often skirted or avoided: Can such an occupation be achieved within a legal framework that includes genuine adherence to the principles of rule-of-law? Should it? What are the costs that a society engaged in such a long term exercise must bear? And what are the implications of the very effort to make a documentary film about such a system?
The reason I posted the video from Ta'ayush above is because of the important work that groups like this (and the Rabbi's for Human Rights in their protection of Palestinian olive groves (http://forward.com/articles/202842/extremist-settlers-clash-with-rabbis-over-palestin/)) do. At around 30 minutes in to the documentary, where the Israeli Supreme Court blocks Settlement development and Ariel Sharon finds out about an old Ottoman legal argument to allow for it to continue, it should be clear why these non-violent direct-action initiatives need to be undertaken.
If an area of land is found to not be being tended by the Palestinians for a period of time (3 years from memory) then it can be "repossessed" by the Occupying force and utilised for Settlement growth/productivity. That's why Settlers attack Palestinian shepherds and pull Olive trees out of the ground. It isn't just being petty, it is to extend the reach of the Settlements (for more start with here (http://rhr.org.il/eng/2013/10/olive-tree-vandalization-summary/), here (http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/middle-east/a-rabbi-struggles-to-protect-his-palestinian-flock-2121858.html) and here (http://www.csmonitor.com/World/Middle-East/Olive-Press/2013/1022/Why-rabbis-are-helping-Palestinians-defend-their-olive-harvest)).

The worry was Jesse Ventura was half serious about running with him for office
because of his audience base. I think Howard represents an audience that see

I appreciate that some people give a sh!t about their opinion but they just don't seem relevant to this thread...
How does what Joan Rivers and Howard Stern relate to the OP topic which is:
What life in occupied Palestine is really like.

The worry was Jesse Ventura was half serious about running with him for office
because of his audience base. I think Howard represents an audience that see
the world as irrelevant and if we are all sovereign individuals that's there right.
I don't blame you for not listening, I wish I hadn't but sometimes we need
to expose bigotry and ignorance.

I agree I have changed it , Joan Rivers was posted yesterday
and I ignored it. the Howard Stern one was strange as because
he is a 'shock jock' he has been more open to alternate views
when he had Jesse on. But in the end he is irrelevant , but he
has a large audience , hopefully some of them will be offended
by his out burst who knows ??

Israeli troops kill Palestinian boy during West Bank clash - relative (http://www.trust.org/item/20140810092708-k2dfi/)
Reuters - Sun, 10 Aug 2014
JERUSALEM, Aug 10 (Reuters) - Israeli soldiers killed a Palestinian boy during a confrontation with rock-throwing protesters in the occupied West Bank on Sunday, a relative who witnessed the incident said.
Youssef al-Anati said his 11-year-old nephew, Khalil, was shot dead even though he was not taking part in the disturbances near the city of Hebron. The boy was taken to a local hospital, which said he had been hit in the back with a live bullet.
"Khalil was standing outside and at a distance some kids were throwing stones at the Israeli army," al-Anati told Reuters. "Suddenly Khalil collapsed to the ground and we rushed to him; he was all covered in blood."
An Israeli military spokeswoman said she was checking the report.

Israeli forces shoot, kill 12-year-old Palestinian boy near Hebron (http://www.maannews.net/eng/ViewDetails.aspx?ID=719498)
Ma'an 10/08/2014
HEBRON (Ma'an) -- A 12-year old Palestinian boy was shot dead by Israeli soldiers while playing in front of his home in al-Fawwar refugee camp south of Hebron in the southern West Bank early Sunday.
Palestinian medical sources at Hebron's al-Ahli Hospital told Ma'an that Khalil Muhammad Ahmad al-Anati arrived at the hospital after being shot in the back.
They said that the gunshot entered through the victim's lower abdomen and exited through his groin.
Doctors tried their best to resuscitate the boy and stop severe bleeding, but they announced his death shortly after he arrived in the emergency room.
Locals told Ma'an that shortly before the boy was killed an Israeli military force escorted Israeli engineers into a neighborhood known as Nabat al-Haffara for unknown reasons.
A few young men hurled stones at the soldiers in response to the military incursion, and the soldiers subsequently opened fire at the boys.
A bullet hit al-Anati while he was standing in front of his home.
He was evacuated to the hospital in a private car.
Al-Fawwar is located south of Hebron near an Israeli military checkpoint that divides a number of local Palestinian communities close to the local illegal Israeli settlement of Haggay.
At least 17 Palestinians have been killed across the West Bank in the last month, amid widespread public anger and growing protests over an Israeli assault on Gaza that has killed more than 1,915 Palestinians in the last four weeks.
An Israeli military spokeswoman did not return calls seeking comment.

Concerns of Excessive Use of Skunk Spray in East Jerusalem (http://www.acri.org.il/en/2014/08/10/skunk-ej/)
Update:August 10, 2014
http://www.acri.org.il/en/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/skunk-cc-by-sa-Tal-King.jpg
Skunk liquid is a foul smelling liquid that is sprayed with great force from police vans as a means of crowd dispersal. Apart from the repulsive nausea-inducing stench, the skunk liquid can cause pain and redness if it comes into contact with eyes, irritation if it comes into contact with skin and if swallowed can cause abdominal pain requiring medical treatment.
According to testimonies gathered by ACRI during the events of recent weeks in East Jerusalem, the police excessively utilized skunk spray vans in breach of proper procedures and in a manner that caused property damage and personal injury to Palestinian residents. Witness testimony reveals that the police indiscriminately sprayed the skunk liquid towards houses, people, restaurants brimming with people and in crowded streets, causing harm to innocent residents. Evidence suggests that in some cases the skunk repellent was arbitrarily used with no apparent justification and in the absence of any public disturbances. Even when the skunk liquid was used in the course of dealing with a public disturbance, it was used in an unreasonable manner that deviated from proper procedures and caused considerable damage to residents that didn’t take part in the incident.
In light of the evidence, ACRI Attorney Yusef Karram contacted the Jerusalem District Police Commander on August 5, 2014, to request that he urgently clarify the details of the incidents, reiterate to his officers the correct procedures for the use of skunk liquid and reduce its use in crowded East Jerusalem neighborhoods to the absolute minimum level required.

Another IDF "incident" with Skunk occurred late June with the spraying of the noxious liquid on and in Palestinian buildings in Bethlehem. Contrary to the claims made by Odortec Ltd (http://www.skunk-skunk.com/) that 'Skunk is 100% eco-friendly - harmless to both nature and people' and that this 'harmless deterrent consists of an extremely foul-smelling liquid... While the smell does linger in the air, there are no other long-term effects; and even clothes hit with the Skunk can be used after a simple washing' (source (http://www.skunk-skunk.com/121755/The-Product)) there are reports from Palestinians that the liquid can not be simply washed away, has caused medical difficulty to those hit by it and even killed trees.
Imaging sitting in your lounge room and suddenly a window smashes and raw sewage gets piped in by armed soldiers. Those soldiers laugh at you and even take photos of themselves laughing as they pump the sewage into your lounge room.
Welcome to the West Bank...

Israeli forces spray Bethlehem homes with putrid-smelling water (http://www.maannews.net/Eng/ViewDetails.aspx?ID=708269)

Rubhiya Abd al-Rahman Darwish, 75, was taken to the hospital after Israeli forces fired Skunk water with a cannon into her home (MaanImages/Alex Shams)
BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- Rubhiya Abd al-Rahman Darwish was taking a nap on the couch of her family home on Sunday when she was awoken with a start by the sound of shattering glass.
"I saw a burst of water breaking through the window, when suddenly an intense odor hit and I passed out from the smell, so they had to take me to the hospital," the 75-year-old woman told Ma'an during an interview in her small apartment in Bethlehem's Aida refugee camp.
Although she is used to Israeli soldiers throwing tear gas canisters into the alleyway beside her home, Darwish was surprised to find that this time they had come with a cannon to hose down the sides of local homes with putrid-smelling water.
"I went to the hospital and they gave me a shot, but the poison started coming out of my mouth and nose. I started screaming because my back was hurting, and it hasn't stopped," the elderly woman, who said she suffers from diabetes, hypertension, and a heart condition, told Ma'an.
"All my clothes were ruined, and we had to throw all the quilts and mattress out," she said.
"Why do they do this to us?"
Locals say that the daytime attack on their homes was completely unprovoked and unexpected, and many expressed shock at the fact that Israeli forces had covered the camp in a layer of an unknown, repulsive substance.
Known as "Skunk," the Israeli military has been using the chemical since at least 2008 as a form of non-lethal crowd control. Palestinians, however, simply call the liquid "sh!t," after the smell that can stay for weeks on clothes, body, walls, and furniture.
An Israeli military spokesperson contacted by Ma'an did not return a request for comment on Skunk's chemical makeup, or on the purpose of the raid. However, Israeli human rights watchdog B'Tselem says that the military has in the past said that the substance is organic, although it has not divulged its ingredients.
A B'Tselem report on Skunk also confirmed the recurrent usage of the substance -- which causes nausea and vomiting, especially among children and the elderly -- against Palestinian homes, "raising suspicions that the Skunk is being used punitively against villages where regular weekly demonstrations are held."
Near the camp, on what used to be the main Hebron-Jerusalem road but is now cut off by the Israeli separation wall, a large water cannon was even installed earlier this year beside a military tower to spray the water at locals, highlighting how quickly Skunk has been integrated into the Israeli army's arsenal.

Salah Ajarma, the director of a nearby cultural center, said that a group of children had been walking about fifty meters from where the separation wall cuts through the camp when Israeli soldiers started firing tear gas canisters at them.
"The soldiers then came down and followed the kids," Ajarma told Ma'an during an interview at his office at the Lajee Center, "and as we stood watching from the center with a group of visiting foreigners and journalists, the soldiers began cursing vile words at us and at the children in Arabic, to make sure we understood."
In the week before the attack, Israeli soldiers had thrown tear gas canisters at groups of children when they gathered near the center after morning exams ended, and so Ajarma said he was expecting the usual threats again on Sunday.
"I was surprised, though, when the soldiers came back with a big vehicle with a pump on top of it and they started spraying everything with a chemical substance with a terrible smell," he said.
"They weren't trying to hit the protesters, there weren't even any protesters in the street! They shot at the homes of people and into their windows, regardless of whether they were open or closed," he added.
After the raid, residents emerged from their homes, horrified to find the alleyways and homes of the camps covered in a foul-smelling coat of liquid. For the next few hours locals attempted to clean it up, and while they managed to get rid of the worst of the smell, when a Ma'an reporter visited the scene three days later, the smell still hung heavy in the air.

"People don't even know what the substance in is in order to clean it," Ajarma said, "and we do not know what the chemicals are made of. We tried to clean it with chlorine but there was a chemical reaction, giving off an even more killer smell," he added.
Noting that this is the third time the army has sprayed Skunk in the camp, Ajarma said that in the winter the smell had stayed for 10-15 days, and a row of trees hit by the water had since shriveled up and died.
"This chemical could have effects that we don't know about, on the nature in the camp, and on the future generations," Ajarma worried.
Nidal Al-Azraq, a volunteer at the Lajee Center, told Ma'an that the soldiers were "having fun" throughout the raid, mocking residents as they shot the cannon into homes and even taking pictures of themselves beside it.
"There was a dog above one of the walls on the street where they were spraying houses, and so they aimed at it and started shooting the water," Al-Azraq said.
"After almost hitting it twice, the dog started barking, and on the third time the soldiers hit the dog straight on with the water cannon and they all started laughing," he added.
Al-Azraq said that although he was unsure of the purpose of the Israeli raid, he believed that they had done it in order to pressure residents into stopping protesters in the camp, who often throw rocks at the Israeli soldiers stationed nearby.
"They win sometimes, and people get mad and tell the protesters to stop," Al-Azraq told Ma'an.
"But other people reject this pressure and say: 'What does it mean to hit us with this kind of stuff?' It's not just an insult, it's as if we're not even human beings!"
Al-Azraq said that many people, however, were resigned to such attacks by military forces. "It's useless to say that this is against our human rights, because that is not a language that Israel knows. What use is it to ask why they do this to people?"

Darwish's window.
Darwish, the 75-year-old woman who passed out after soldiers sprayed the putrid-smelling water into her window, expressed her resignation at the repeated Israeli attacks on her home.
A refugee originally from the village of Malha near Jerusalem, Darwish was forced to leave her home with her family when Zionist forces came and expelled them from the town in 1948.
"Where should we go?" she asked, sitting on the couch of her small apartment as she looked up at the roughly-patched up window broken by the water cannon.
"They kicked us out of our homeland, and what are we supposed to do? Where are we supposed to go?"

Three Houses: An ACRI Documentary on East Jerusalem (http://www.acri.org.il/en/2014/05/28/3houses/)
From ACRI, Update:May 28, 2014
ACRI is proud to share with you our new documentary: 3 Houses.
This short documentary tells the story of 3 Palestinian families living beyond the separation barrier in East Jerusalem and the reality of depravation they are forced to endure in their struggle to build a home.
‘3 Houses’ was filmed in Ras Khamis and Ras Shahada, Jerusalem neighborhoods that were cut off from the rest of the city when the Separation Barrier was built in 2002. Since then, these neighborhoods and the tens of thousands of people who live there have been utterly neglected by the Jerusalem municipality. In 2013, the desperate situation in this no-man’s-land was even further exacerbated when the municipality announced its intent to demolish the homes of thousands of residents.
With this video’s release, and with your help, ACRI is committed to bringing this extraordinary situation to light. Together we will continue to defend the rights of the tens of thousands of East Jerusalem Palestinians living in these neglected neighborhoods.
