View Full Version : Aren't we being a little silly here?

In prehistoric times we started developing tools to make our lives more simple, yet now we are all making our lives more complex by developing and maintaining (new) tools that should make our lives more simple...

Nail on head for me , Skyhaven !

Progress, hey ! Still, ive just downloaded a silliness app so i will worry about it no more.
Having spent a few hours of my life, de-bugging said app, my future just got a little less silly.

It all shows markings of being part of the rabbit hole.

First imagine mind and then (mind) thinks of ways to be occupied.

technology has separated humans from each other , look at the cell phones and the internet , you sit next to your family , engrossed in your phone and be totally separated from the people that live in your own home ... Henoch foretold that the interweb would cause the natural love of humans to grow cold ...

sim·ple
adjective \ˈsim-pəl\

: not hard to understand or do

: having few parts : not complex or fancy

: not special or unusual

I contend that tools were invented ambiguously, to make our lives more simple in the sense that they make certain things less hard to do, but also to make our lives less simple in the sense of adding complexity. This ambiguity that was there with prehistoric tools is still there today.

What I hear in this thread is a dissatisfaction with a loss of balance in regard to the beneficial application of tools in contrast to the distracting and dehumanizing influence of tools. That would be something I can relate to, as I also observe the trend of a dehumanization through a growing addiction to tools of all kinds. I also observe a counter-trend to his, however.

I love scientific progress and the invention of new tools. I hope we can literally manifest tangible things virtually out of thin air at some point, 3-d printing shows the way. At the same time, I hope that humanity will keep in touch with the earth and our very physical nature. There is a pleasure and benefit in digging into the soil with your hands that has not yet been quantified by science, I figure.

"Ahhh feels so good to hear truth ... you said the magic word = Balance , the whole point of ET's coming here , and all our troubles on Earth in a nutshell , our world is out of balance on every front ...

There's stories that we lived in harmony with the earth for millions of years. I would guess, using technology only for the good of all, which would include the space occupied. It is the element of desire for control that seems to be problem...once that started taking hold in the species, the use (and development) of tools went "sideways", from a true human perspective*

*I believe humans to be beings conscious of themselves and their surroundings, who thrive when in communal non-selfish mindset.

PS-I could be wrong...

This is all based on the assumption that is was any different before cell phones and the internet. (I know, memory and logic serves many that it was)

The grass is always greener on the other side (the past) of the fence.

But is it?

But was it?

Illusions can be both comforting and distressing. The comforting ones can be a goal to return to and the distressing ones are orientated so as to depart from.

yeah , I remember the days before cell phones and computers , we spoke to one another face to face ... practically no one went anywhere without a friend with them , dinner was in the kitchen (family time) , and eating out if your lucky was two or three times a month , TV had three channels , watched on weekends only ... if you wanted to talk to someone , your butt walked over to where they were ... it was a different day ... we explored the world around us , now we do it electronically ...

It's still the same dance floor with the only thing that has changed is the song and dance moves/ routines. I am sure that our ancestors would have observed negative trends to the era you speak so well of. Change is the illusory constant.

(Don't get me wrong, I have strong fond memories of the 'past' as well)

Isn't language also a tool that became too complicated? Half of the time I have no idea what people mean precisely, especially when abstract reasoning is involved it all becomes so blurry and complex... Then sometimes people accuse me of not making an effort to understand, but is it me really, or is it the tool?

We talk as if our 'tools' were made with beneficence in mind. This society is corrupt - and every invention is corruptible. That is why tech seems threatening - in this world it most likely is used in a menacing manner. And that is why nostalgia is looked upon with longing for the good old days - before the tech screwed up our lives.

But in this world tech is virtually synonymous with control and manipulation and so this age or that past age, no difference.

Technology is used to corrupt in a corrupt world.

Abstraction is a temporary state just like this sentence.

Everything is a tool except there is no tool.

In a corrupt world everything in it is corrupt by default.
