I contend that tools were invented ambiguously, to make our lives more simple in the sense that they make certain things less hard to do, but also to make our lives less simple in the sense of adding complexity. This ambiguity that was there with prehistoric tools is still there today.

What I hear in this thread is a dissatisfaction with a loss of balance in regard to the beneficial application of tools in contrast to the distracting and dehumanizing influence of tools. That would be something I can relate to, as I also observe the trend of a dehumanization through a growing addiction to tools of all kinds. I also observe a counter-trend to his, however.

I love scientific progress and the invention of new tools. I hope we can literally manifest tangible things virtually out of thin air at some point, 3-d printing shows the way. At the same time, I hope that humanity will keep in touch with the earth and our very physical nature. There is a pleasure and benefit in digging into the soil with your hands that has not yet been quantified by science, I figure.

There's stories that we lived in harmony with the earth for millions of years. I would guess, using technology only for the good of all, which would include the space occupied. It is the element of desire for control that seems to be problem...once that started taking hold in the species, the use (and development) of tools went "sideways", from a true human perspective*

*I believe humans to be beings conscious of themselves and their surroundings, who thrive when in communal non-selfish mindset.

yeah , I remember the days before cell phones and computers , we spoke to one another face to face ... practically no one went anywhere without a friend with them , dinner was in the kitchen (family time) , and eating out if your lucky was two or three times a month , TV had three channels , watched on weekends only ... if you wanted to talk to someone , your butt walked over to where they were ... it was a different day ... we explored the world around us , now we do it electronically ...

It's still the same dance floor with the only thing that has changed is the song and dance moves/ routines. I am sure that our ancestors would have observed negative trends to the era you speak so well of. Change is the illusory constant.

We talk as if our 'tools' were made with beneficence in mind. This society is corrupt - and every invention is corruptible. That is why tech seems threatening - in this world it most likely is used in a menacing manner. And that is why nostalgia is looked upon with longing for the good old days - before the tech screwed up our lives.

But in this world tech is virtually synonymous with control and manipulation and so this age or that past age, no difference.
