View Full Version : Youtube censoring (update - glitch - see Post #18 below) Dark Journalist's interview of Bill Ryan

.
I have heard reports of this happening before to others, but now I have a documented case of it myself.

I subscribe to a number of Youtube channels, including the Dark Journalist and a variety of channels talking about computers.

As of the time I write this, the Dark Journalist's interview of Bill Ryan has been up on his channel for five hours. It's a great interview, and I've already listened to it.

But Youtube is not displaying that video on the list of new videos available on the channels I subscribe to. I have scanned the list of new videos available to me on the channels I subscribe to several times in the last 3 or 4 hours (doing some boring tax work, and looking for a pleasant distraction.) Bill's interview has not yet showed up there any of those times.

That list of newly available subscribed videos is (usually) critical to my finding new material on the channels I follow. I subscribe to nearly 60 channels (most of them rather inactive, fortunately), and I certainly am not going to click through each and every one of those 60 channels to see if they have a new video up. Many Youtube users do this, and it is a rather effective way for Youtube to suppress the audience for a new video by not showing it on the list of new videos available to those subscribed to that channel.

Here are two screen shots.

The first screen shot shows the Dark Journalist's Youtube channel, with Bill Ryan's (now 5 hour old) interview as the top video available. That screen shot also shows that I am subscribed to the Dark Journalist's Youtube channel.

The second screen shot shows the new videos availble to me, over (supposedly) all the Youtube channels that I am subscribed to, going back 17 hours. That screen shot should show the Dark Journalist's interview of Bill Ryan. It does not.

Question - for any other Avalon member who is subscribed to the Dark Journalist's Youtube channel:
Does his interview of Bill Ryan show up on your list of new videos on your subscribed channels ?

===

I just now ran a test. I unsubscribed to the Dark Journalist's Youtube channel, and then immediately resubscribed. Now his new interview of Bill Ryan does display in my list of available subscribed videos correctly.

Showing up ok on my list here in the UK. I do notice this problem however with other channels I have subscribed to on an increasing basis.
Cheers.

YouTube changed the way they notify people who subscribe to channels of new content. I heard Freeman Fly talking about this several months ago. If you want to get notified of a channel's new videos, you have to click the little bell icon that appears below their videos. Otherwise it might show up on your new video list, or you may have to go directly to the channel to find it. They did this so people would do the direct notification thing, apparently. I subscribed to several this way initially, but had to remove several prolific producers of content as it was "blowing up" my phone all day, but I kept DJ and JPF and a few others who produce content on a more or less weekly basis.

Yes, it's showing up here in France, no problem.

A great discussion. Looking forward to the second part.

it was done so the notification system is more efficient and not just noise.. I prefer it.

I have not had a chance to watch this yet but YouTube alerted me about this video just a little while ago.

I do subscribe to Dark Journalist. Looking forward to listening to it as soon as I can.

And yes, it is listed on the page under "what to watch next".

The Dark Journalist interview came up in my subscriptions, but it was a few hours after Norman had posted it on Avalon. So this morning I subscribed to Daniel Liszt's Dark Journalist newsletter (http://www.darkjournalist.com/s-subscribe.php). It’s something I NEVER do for privacy reasons.

I’ve noticed that subscribers on my other channels have posted comments at least an hour before it comes up in my feed. To get around it, I bookmarked my go to fav channels and check them that way.

I don’t click the bell because it’s another place YouTube wants you to check. Too, I can’t help but wonder if it’s a way to keep track everyone's choices and the YouTubers' traffic.

*****
For those unfamiliar with the bell:

1a. Click the bell on the top right of the person’s main YouTube page.

***

1b. Or the bell on a specific video.

***

2. Then a notification comes up.

I subscribe to nothing on YouTube but access it quite frequently; the Liszt/Ryan came through loud and clear-

beside that I found it strange DJ's interview with Ryan is available on YouTube but not on Liszt's website- why?

If you've read the thread.. you've heard the interview... It's enjoyable to hear it in Bills voice however... but the data is mostly the same as what is represented in the thread already.

Well, it looks like it was more like an innocent glitch in Youtube's notification to me, than a deliberate censoring. We're all seeing the Youtube notification of the Dark Journalist's interview of Bill Ryan just fine now.

So I'll close this thread (and loosen the strap in my tin-foil-hat conspiracy shield a notch.)

:)
