View Full Version : Google suppressing free speech; Google search traffic to Avalon down over half.

In his article Google Is Committed To The Suppression Of Free Speech (http://www.paulcraigroberts.org/2017/08/08/google-committed-suppression-free-speech/), Paul Craig Roberts uses the occasion of their recent firing of James Damore, a Harvard PhD, to raise deep questions about Google's assault on free speech and their close working with the American deep state to surveil and manipulate public knowledge.

Of Damore's firing, Roberts writes:

Having fired Damore or permitted Google’s Thought Control Czar, Danielle Brown, to fire Damore, Sundar Pichai delivered a caricature of hypocrisy. Sundar addressed Damore’s “co-workers who are questioning whether they can safely express their views in the workplace, especially those with a minority viewpoint. They too feel under threat, and that is also not OK. People must feel free to express dissent.”
Yes - as Roberts says - this is a caricature of hypocrisy - destroying exactly what you say you are supporting.

Of Google's dominance over public information, Roberts writes:

Writing in Global Research, Graham Vanbergen lists 13 websites arbitrarily branded by Google as fake news or conspiracy sites whose readership Google has managed to reduce between 19 and 67 percent:

* wsws.org fell by 67 percent
* alternet.org fell by 63 percent
* globalresearch.ca fell by 62 percent
* consortiumnews.com fell by 47 percent
* socialistworker.org fell by 47 percent
* mediamatters.org fell by 42 percent
* commondreams.org fell by 37 percent
* internationalviewpoint.org fell by 36 percent
* democracynow.org fell by 36 percent
* wikileaks.org fell by 30 percent
* truth-out.org fell by 25 percent
* counterpunch.org fell by 21 percent
theintercept.com fell by 19 percent

It is completely obvious that none of these sites are fake news or conspiracy sites. These sites are under Google censorship because they question the official lies that are used to control the explanations given to the people. With the print and TV media and NPR under its control, the ruling oligarchy is now moving to shut down all Internet explanation that differs from the official lies that are used to keep people firmly locked in The Matrix.

I would like to add ProjectAvalon.net to this list of sites being discriminated against by Google.

Here's a tally of how many search hits we've gotten each month, for the last year, from Google:

Aug/2016 4497
Sep/2016 3961
Oct/2016 3853
Nov/2016 3394
Dec/2016 3104
Jan/2017 4728
Feb/2017 3565
Mar/2017 3264
Apr/2017 2777
May/2017 2510
Jun/2017 2137
Jul/2017 1700
From 4497, down to 1700, is a fall of over 62% in traffic to ProjectAvalon.net from Google searches.

Narrowing the period to just this year, from January through July 2017, the fall in search hits from Google to ProjectAvalon.net is from 4728 to 1700, slightly steeper in a shorter time period, down over 64%.

Every month this year, 2017, the count decreases significantly from the previous month.

Only going to get worse one imagines.

As a matter of interest is your starting point a particularly high figure, an all-time high, or just an average kind of result from the preceding year? (Sept2015-Aug2016)

Good question - I only analyzed the log files for the last year to get the above data.

I'll fire up a second round of analysis over a several year period, though I might be asleep before it finishes, in which case I'll try to post results tomorrow, around about the time of the eclipse in the US.

Even some rather main stream news outlets are noticing. US News & World Report has an article on this entitled The New Censorship -- How did Google become the internet’s censor and master manipulator, blocking access to millions of websites? (https://www.usnews.com/opinion/articles/2016-06-22/google-is-the-worlds-biggest-censor-and-its-power-must-be-regulated), which begins:

==============

Google, Inc., isn't just the world's biggest purveyor of information; it is also the world's biggest censor.

The company maintains at least nine different blacklists that impact our lives, generally without input or authority from any outside advisory group, industry association or government agency. Google is not the only company suppressing content on the internet. Reddit has frequently been accused of banning postings on specific topics, and a recent report suggests that Facebook has been deleting conservative news stories from its newsfeed, a practice that might have a significant effect on public opinion – even on voting. Google, though, is currently the biggest bully on the block.

When Google's employees or algorithms decide to block our access to information about a news item, political candidate or business, opinions and votes can shift, reputations can be ruined and businesses can crash and burn. Because online censorship is entirely unregulated at the moment, victims have little or no recourse when they have been harmed. Eventually, authorities will almost certainly have to step in, just as they did when credit bureaus were regulated in 1970. The alternative would be to allow a large corporation to wield an especially destructive kind of power that should be exercised with great restraint and should belong only to the public: the power to shame or exclude.

==============

Notice where this article is going - the need for "the authorities" to step in and control this.

The old "problem, reaction, solution", leading to greater global tyranny ... once again rears its tyrannical head.

In related news, Google is also

the dominant player in the Web browser market, with its Chrome browser,
the dominant player in the smart phone market, with its Android based phones, and
the dominant "enforcer" of the move toward more secure websites, increasingly requiring https and policing SSL/TLS security certificate standards, as I have been documenting in my How the Elite Bastards will control the Wild Wild Web. Hi,
I remember being unable to go to Avalon from Ethiopia, and in other places being told that it may be dangerous content.

Is it that people want to go to Avalon and can't?
Or is it that threads here discussing a particular issue, are Trumped by other sites, so a search is optimised for sites that Google chooses, and Avalon is de-optimised?

If that is the case can we do anything to improve our accessibility? Could we get smarter with titles of threads or the tags?

When I look up Project Avalon on the Google search engine PA pops up as a first choice. I am not sure how they are limiting traffic to the site? If I try to get to PA by describing the forum I don't get a hit, however. Maybe their algorithms are more subtle.

Google paid Apple 3 Billion Dollars to be the Default search engine for this year (2017). In the year 2014 it was just 1 Billion.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYqxYYjKLpg

Google is paying Apple billions per year to remain on the iPhone, Bernstein says

Google will pay Apple about $3 billion this year to remain the default search engine on iOS devices, Bernstein says.
The licensing payments make up a large bulk of Apple's services revenue.
There are pros and cons to the payments.

Google is paying Apple billions of dollars to remain the default search engine on iPhones and iPads, Bernstein said in a note to investors on Monday.
The firm believes that Google will pay Apple about $3 billion this year, up from $1 billion just three years ago, and that Google's licensing fees make up a large bulk of Apple's services business.

Apple has been touting its services business as a quickly growing segment of the company, noting that it expects that branch alone will soon be as large as a Fortune 500 company.
"Court documents indicate that Google paid Apple $1B in 2014, and we estimate that total Google payments to Apple in FY 17 may approach $3B," Bernstein analyst A.M. Sacconaghi Jr. said. "Given that Google payments are nearly all profit for Apple, Google alone may account for 5% of Apple's total operating profits this year, and may account for 25% of total company OP growth over the last two years."
Bernstein sees pros and cons in the payments.
Sacconaghi said that Google might decide to back away from paying Apple any licensing fees if it feels confident enough that its search engine is so popular Apple won't include any other option by default.
On the other hand, Sacconaghi said that Apple's iOS devices contribute about 50 percent to Google's mobile search revenue, which means Google might be too afraid to walk away from its licensing deal with Apple. In this case, it's a win-win for Apple and Google.

When I look up Project Avalon on the Google search engine PA pops up as a first choice.
Yes - by all the reports that I've seen - if you specify something in your search that directly points to a particular website, then that website will be included in the results, as expected.

The problem for "alt-media" websites that apparently don't subscribe to world views compatible with Google's world view is that if you look to research some topic, without indicating that you expect results from certain websites or know of something specific to certain websites, then you will not learn about those (de-rated) websites from the first few pages of your Google search results.

In other words, if for example you ask about, say, "Corey Goode", with no mention of Avalon, Bill Ryan or similar in your search terms, then you won't learn about Avalon until a single hit on the third page of Google results, nor about Clif High's or the Dark Journalists critiques until page six of the Google results. Almost all the Google search results in the first few pages are (at first appearances to me) more or less "pro Goode".

Google has immense control over which search results are going to get the most hits, by controlling which search results are in the first page or two of the search results. I have very little doubt that they use that control to better present the search results, in accordance with their world view and priorities. I have even less doubt that their world view and priorities are not the same as mine.

(I'm still fiddling with extracting the rate we receive Google search hits for earlier years ... a couple of silly 20 second errors on my part of cost my poor, uncomplaining (over clocked 16 thread Ryzen!) CPU some extra hours of redoing the (nearly) same boring commands multiple times now.)

Ok - here's the history, since the beginning of "Avalon time", of the number of Google search hits per month that ProjectAvalon.net has received:

http://thepythoniccow.us/Google_search_hits_to_ProjectAvalon_per_month.jpg
Notes:

The counts in the above graph for the last year are higher than the counts in the table in my opening post, because I used a broader search pattern, suitable for use over the entire 7 year period.
The count for the very last (right-most) column is for August 2017, which is lower in part because August isn't done yet.
The counts for a few months in early 2011 are low or zero because I am missing log files for that period.
The day "01", as in "06/01/17" should refer to all the days of the month, not just the first day, so "06/01/17" really means "June 2017".
For the record, and probably meaningful only to myself or Ilie, I counted all Apache log file lines that had "google" in field 11, but that did not have "google.com/bot" anywhere at all on the line.

This is a widespread and growing concern to many.

Google displayed it's bias during the US elections. Entering a term such as "Hillary is" would result in a list of mostly positive returns and entering "Trump is" would result in a list of mostly negative returns.

On Bing, it was generally the opposite.

So, here is an article Global Research has posted:

Damore was not the only one shut down by Google this last week.

As reported by Zerohedge at One Statistics Professor Was Just Banned By Google: Here Is His Story (http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2017-08-21/one-statistics-professor-was-just-banned-google-here-his-story), a statistics professor at Georgetown University, Salil Mehtam, was banned by Google on this last Friday, 18 Aug 2017.

Salil used gmail for his email account and he used google to post his http://statisticalideas.blogspot.com blog. Salil's email, blog (which seems to be back up now), and other Georgetown University pages on Google servers that included his material, were all shut down, without notice or explanation, beyond a "you violated our terms of service" explanation, a couple of days later.

The power being accumulated in a few corporations (In the US at least, Google, Amazon, Microsoft, and Apple come to mind right off, as well as the cartels that control Internet Service access, cell phone access, and main stream news) is dangerous ...

Yes, I've noticed that it's become increasingly harder to find decent information regarding conspiratorial or esoteric fields from Google as of late. Most search results either push a Materialist agenda, or reinforce it by linking you to some of the more questionable sources for this information (think along the lines of those all-caps Youtube videos that slow down grainy, scrambled footage of Hilary Clinton blinking and show it as proof that she is a demon Reptilian whose skin suit is slipping off).

I always had been concerned that this would be one of the pitfalls of the internet; it would be far easier to control information. But then again, perhaps it was never any better? Since before the internet, one had to actively search for information at libraries, which could easily be controlled.

We can only hope that we evolve to be more vigilant.

I recently discovered DuckDuckGo. It's a Chrome Plugin that I now use religiously, as heavily as I do AdBlock. It essentially replaces the Google Search engine, without being total crap like most other search engines out there. Firefox is also good for the time, though I have personal gripes with its design.

If any of you like Chrome's UI, but aren't a fan of its search engine algorithms, DuckDuckGo is for you. Feel free to PM if any of you have questions.

For someone who counts herself lucky to get the machine turned on, Paul, would you explain what search words would help to pull up Project Avalon? I came here through Project Camelot and therefore, the question never entered my mind. Is there a list of terms which would get PA ? If you post these, we might have a clue and suggest more terms.

Just adding "projectavalon" to your Google search terms will move Project Avalon further up the Google search results, and on to the first page of the results in many cases.

Or, if you want to use Google to search -only- on Project Avalon, add "site:projectavalon.net" to your Google search terms.

Don't worry about it. The world is moving to a war footing so some sort of squeeze is considered necessary as far as I read the sign. And to be honest, the PTB have too many other technical problems to resolve.

Project Avalon will be around for a long time yet. It's a bit like Bitcoin. As much as the bankers try to crush Bitcoin by exploiting rapid invest and divest to enforce a crash, they must be horrified as after their efforts Bitcoin is still there, with an ever increasing user base. (Not interested in the value but the perpetual presence).

Thanks for the tips.

Excellent stuff Latte: I have downloaded a copy of the report.

For about 5 or so years now, and I really don't know why I remember it being 5, I have been advising that people source pdfs or text, actual text on articles of interest to them that fall outside "mainstream" interest/sanction and might run counter to officialdom, and, back-up copies to an external hard drive (not cloud based platforms) and print stuff out. Yes it may be costly but at least you'll have a working library to hand. On that subject I shall I think need to invest in another few reams of paper, and ink, as my 'to do' list' of print jobs has mushroomed of late.

YouTube "Economically Censors" Ron Paul, Labels Videos "Not Suitable" For All Advertisers (http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2017-08-27/youtube-economically-censors-ron-paul-labels-videos-not-suitable-all-advertisers)

Aug 27, 2017 11:20 PM

Former US Congressman Ron Paul has joined a growing list of independent political journalists and commentators who’re being economically punished by YouTube despite producing videos that routinely receive hundreds of thousands of views.

In a tweet published Saturday, Wikileaks founder Julian Assange tweeted a screenshot of Paul’s “Liberty Report” page showing that his videos had been labeled “not suitable” for all advertisers by YouTube's content arbiters.

http://storage8.static.itmages.com/i/17/0829/h_1503971030_7145784_e2ef078111.jpeg
Twitter (https://twitter.com/JulianAssange/status/901555436930859008/photo/1?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw&ref_url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.zerohedge.com%2Fnews%2F2017-08-27%2Fyoutube-economically-censors-ron-paul-labels-videos-not-suitable-all-advertisers)

Assange claims that Paul was being punished for speaking out about President Donald Trump’s decision to increase the number of US troops in Afghanistan, after Paul published a video on the subject earlier this week.

The notion that YouTube would want to economically punish a former US Congressman for sharing his views on US foreign policy – a topic that he is unequivocally qualified to speak about – is absurd. Furthermore, the “review requested” marking on one of Paul's videos reveals that they were initially flagged by users before YouTube's moderators confirmed that the videos were unsuitable for a broad audience.

Other political commentators who’ve been censored by YouTube include Paul Joseph Watson and Tim Black – both ostensibly for sharing political views that differ from the mainstream neo-liberal ideology favored by the Silicon Valley elite.

Last week, Google – another Alphabet Inc. company – briefly banned Salil Mehta (http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2017-08-21/one-statistics-professor-was-just-banned-google-here-his-story), an adjunct professor at Columbia and Georgetown who teaches probability and data science, from using its service, freezing his accounts without providing an explanation. He was later allowed to return to the service.

Conservative journalist Lauren Southern spoke out about YouTube’s drive to stifle politically divergent journalists and commentators during an interview with the Daily Caller (http://dailycaller.com/2017/08/11/conservative-and-independent-youtube-channels-hit-by-censorship-and-demonetization/).

http://storage2.static.itmages.com/i/17/0829/h_1503971559_6797380_987f59d017.jpeg

Of course, Google isn’t the only Silicon Valley company that’s enamored with censorship. Facebook has promised to eradicate “fake news,” (http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2016-11-22/facebook-has-quietly-developed-censorship-tool-push-chinese-return) which, by its definition, includes political content that falls outside of the mainstream.

Still, economically punishing a former US Congressman and medical doctor is a new low in Silicon Valley's campaign to stamp out dissent.

this new article on the Sun..

The Google-owned video site is now putting videos into a "limited state" if they are deemed controversial enough to be considered objectionable, but not hateful, pornographic or violent enough to be banned altogether.

This policy was announced several months ago but has come into force in the past week, prompting anger among members of the YouTube community.
The Sun Online understands Google and YouTube staff refer to the tactic as "tougher treatment". One prominent video-maker slammed the new scheme whilst WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange described the measures as "economic censorship".
However, YouTube sees it as a way of maintaining freedom of speech and allowing discussion of controversial issues without resorting to the wholesale banning of videos.

DID you know that Google has been recording you without your knowledge?

The technology giant has effectively turned millions of its users' smartphones into listening devices that can capture intimate conversations - even when they aren't in the room.

If you own an Android phone, it's likely that you've used Google's Assistant, which is similar to Apple's Siri.

Google says it only turns on and begins recording when you utter the words "OK Google".

But a Sun investigation has found that the virtual assistant is a little hard of hearing.

In some cases, just saying "OK" in conversation prompted it to switch on your phone and record around 20 seconds of audio.

It regularly switches on the microphone as you go about your day-to-day activities, none the wiser.

Once Google is done recording, it uploads the audio files to its computer servers - often dubbed "the cloud".

These files are accessible from absolutely anywhere in the world - as long as you have an internet connection.

That means any device that is signed into your personal Gmail or Google account can access the library of your deepest, darkest secrets.

So if you're on a laptop right now and signed into Gmail - you could have a listen.

Recordings last around 10-20 seconds on average, and a text version of the conversation is saved.

The Silicon Valley giant states on its terms and conditions that it keeps these recordings for "improving speech recognition against all Google products that use your voice".

After the Sun Online presented examples of the voice recognition flaws to Google, a spokesman said: "We only process voice searches after the phone believes the hot word 'OK Google' is detected. Audio snippets are used by Google to improve the quality of speech recognition across Search."

It recently launched a smart assistant, Google Home (https://www.thesun.co.uk/tech/2982838/google-home-uk-price-amazon-echo-maplin/).

Mundane voice recordings from the general public will help its artificial intelligence that runs Google Home, by teaching it how humans naturally communicate.

In simple terms: it's a free language class for its software.

First, you'll need to be signed into your Gmail or Google account.

Once you've done that, type "history.google.com/history" into your web browser.

You'll be taken to a hub which contains your entire digital footprint, so be careful, it could make for some grim reading.

This includes Maps searches and YouTube videos you've watched.

Click on "Activity Controls "on the left-hand side of the page.

Under "Web and App Activity", click "Manage Activity".

If Google's keeping tabs on you, there should be a stream of web pages and map searches that show up in chronological order.

You can randomly delete searches, or select all the searches to make them disappear.

But Google is, first and foremost, an advertising company and its largest product is a targeted advert service, which it sells to the biggest brands in the world.

Billions of annual web searches, location and email data allow it to target the population with specialised marketing - and there is no reason why it couldn't do the same with your voice data, too.

So, now for the important question: how can I listen to the sound files Google has from my life?

How can I listen back to the audio Google has recorded from my phone?

It's pretty easy.

Unlike Apple, who does not publicise any of the voice data it stores through Siri (https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/2938848/find-out-what-secrets-apples-siri-can-tell-strangers-about-you/), Google is pretty transparent - giving you full access to your audio.

First, you'll need to be signed into your Gmail or Google account.

Once you've done that, type "history.google.com/history (https://www.thesun.co.uk/tech/4288350/how-to-see-what-google-knows-about-you-including-places-youve-visited-and-a-guide-to-switching-it-off/)" into your web browser.

You'll be taken to a hub which contains your entire digital footprint, so be careful, it could make for some grim reading.

This includes Maps searches and YouTube videos you've watched.

Under the tab Voice and Audio Activity, you'll find a list of recordings in chronological order.

Before you start listening, you might want to plug your headphones in.

You'll have to listen to the cringe-worthy sounds of you buying a pack of fags in the newsagent or making small talk at the bus stop.

But there might also be all lots of salacious gossip that you wouldn't want anybody else to hear.

You'll be shocked to hear what it's picked up, however.

The Sun Online discovered recordings from when the phone's owner was not in the room - and even revealed a romantic interlude between two mystery colleagues.

How do I switch it off?

It is possible to stop Google from storing so much info in the future.

Go back to "Activity controls" and under "Web & App activity" you should see a blue toggle.

You can switch this off, but be warned. Officially you have merely "paused" the recordings - so keep checking back on a regular basis to ensure that the terms and conditions don't change in the future and you aren't auto-enrolled when a new Android update comes along.

Apple iPhone users aren't any better off.

The tech giant also stores your voice recordings to improve its Siri assistant - but you aren't able to access them.

Apple says that the recordings are anonymised after 18 months, so nobody would be able to figure out who is speaking.

YouTube [Google] Shuts Down North Korea Propaganda Account (http://www.military.com/daily-news/2017/09/10/youtube-shuts-north-korea-propaganda-account.html?ESRC=eb_170911.nl)

YouTube has cut off access to a state-run North Korean propaganda channel, as the U.S. seeks to impose tougher sanctions following Pyongyang's recent nuclear and missile tests.

The shutdown of Uriminzokkiri, which regularly posted video footage boasting of the North's nuclear and missile programs and others praising the North's leader Kim Jong-Un, was confirmed Saturday.

"This account has been terminated for violating YouTube's community guidelines", said the video-sharing website.

YouTube gives no details on reasons why particular accounts are closed down, or for how long. But advertising revenue generated by the accounts could violate U.S. trade sanctions.

Academics use official footage from the channels of missile launches and visits to factories by Kim to gain rare insights into the progress of the country's weapons programs.

"Tracking and digitally reconstructing events is going to be more difficult as these accounts get deleted," Scott Lafoy, a Washington-based satellite imagery analyst, told NK News.

The channel serves various propaganda purposes for North Korea.

Last month, Uriminzokkiri published a video featuring the two sons of James Joseph Dresnok, in which they said their father -- the only U.S. soldier known still to be living in North Korea after defecting more than five decades ago -- had died last year pledging loyalty to the "great leader Kim Jong-Un".

In July, it hosted a video featuring Lim Ji-Hyun, a female defector in her 20s who arrived in Seoul in 2014 and soon became a public figure, before apparently returning to the North from the "hell" of the capitalist South.

Uriminzokkiri's social media accounts remained active Saturday.

North Korea conducted its sixth nuclear test a week ago (http://www.military.com/daily-news/2017/09/03/will-us-attack-north-korea-well-see-trump-says.html), saying it was a hydrogen bomb that could be fitted onto a missile -- prompting global condemnation and calls for further sanctions.

In July, it tested two intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) that appeared to bring much of the mainland U.S. into range.

The U.S. has formally requested a U.N. Security Council vote on Monday on tough new sanctions against North Korea, despite resistance from China and Russia.

This is not the first time that YouTube has targeted North Korean propaganda.

In November 2016, the video-sharing platform closed down state-owned Korean Central TV1. Several other channels including Chosun TV, NK Propaganda and KCTV Stream were also cut off, according to NK News.

Just a thought?

Did this phenomena start with the advent of President Trump to the American National Political Scene? All kinds of things became evident in tandem with his ascendancy. In fact, Alt nearly went the equivalent of lame stream and in the process many of the alt heroes were exposed to their ulterior motives and some of them were not very pretty. Couple that with the play of alt on various lame stream sources, the necessity of experiencing vicarious drama on selected sites was appeased by just watching the current administration. Never fear, resurgence is part of the pendulum swing.

I really enjoyed the Google parody art. My fave is -GOOLAG DON"T Think Differently !
I have noticed how my searches on Google has become flimsy. Really, so very little to work with to dig deeper for other viewpoints/ sites.
When I put Project Avalon in search I would get a page with a direct link to PA. Two steps but there.
I do not find so much either for Duck Duck Go or Bing. I am not great with the computer but it was -in the past- chock full of websites that were controversial in the alt media. PA has almost become ( for me) a way to get to places I may never have known otherwise. So, thank you all posters for your capabilities and sharing.

Information war: Big Brother Google intensifies censorship of anti-war websites (http://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2017/09/19/goog-s19.html)

Google has intensified its censorship of left-wing, progressive and anti-war websites, cutting the search traffic of 13 leading news outlets by 55 percent since April.

On August 2, the World Socialist Web Site reported that changes to Google's search algorithm had led the search traffic of these sites to drop by 45 percent, according to figures by the search analysis service SEMRush.

In the ensuing six weeks, the search traffic of every one of these sites, without exception, has plunged further, leading the total search traffic for the sites to fall by an additional nine percentage points.

The World Socialist Web Site, whose search traffic had fallen by 67 percent between April and July, has now experienced a total drop in search traffic of 74 percent.

By other measures, the WSWS's performance in search results has been impacted even more substantially. On September 16, the latest date available, articles from the WSWS were shown in search results 68,000 times, down from over 450,000 in April. This constitutes a decline of some 85 percent.

As a result of Google's censorship, the WSWS's global page rank has fallen from 31,000 to 41,000, according to Amazon's Alexa traffic ranking software.

Other sites affected include:

Alternet, one of the top 3,000 sites in the US, has seen its Google search traffic fall by 71 percent between April and September, up from 63 percent in the period through July.

Democracy Now, one of the top 5,000 sites in the US, had its search traffic fall 50 percent between April and September, up from 36 percent in the period through July.

Common Dreams, ranked in the top 8,000 US sites, had its Google search traffic fall by 50 percent between April and September, up from 37 percent in the period through July.

Global Research, one of the top 14,000 sites in the US, had its traffic fall slightly from its massive 62 percent decline between April and July.

Truth-out.org, ranked in the top 12,000 sites in the US, had its search traffic fall by 49 percent, up from 25 percent in the period through July.

The information uncovered by the WSWS has been prominently reported on a number of alternative news websites, including Consortium News (https://consortiumnews.com/2017/07/28/the-dawn-of-an-orwellian-future/), Global Research (https://www.globalresearch.ca/forbes-writer-says-google-censored-report-on-manipulation-of-search-traffic/5608361), Counterpunch (https://www.counterpunch.org/2017/08/09/google-censors-block-access-to-counterpunch-and-other-progressive-sites/), Truthdig (https://www.truthdig.com/articles/the-silencing-of-dissent/), Russia Today (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=07unP-i--xQ), Truepublica (http://truepublica.org.uk/global/truth-war-lost-global-censorship-apparatus-called-google/) and others.

In an article on Truthdig (https://www.truthdig.com/articles/the-silencing-of-dissent/), the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Chris Hedges pointed to the censorship of the WSWS and other left-wing websites:
"The ruling elites, who grasp that the reigning ideology of global corporate capitalism and imperial expansion no longer has moral or intellectual credibility, have mounted a campaign to shut down the platforms given to their critics...

"This is a war of ideas. The corporate state cannot compete honestly in this contest. It will do what all despotic regimes do-govern through wholesale surveillance, lies, blacklists, false accusations of treason, heavy-handed censorship and, eventually, violence." Despite the broad support for the WSWS's calls for an end to Google's Internet censorship, the company has refused to reply either to the WSWS's petition opposing its censorship or repeated attempts to contact it for comment.

While Google's censorship has substantially reduced traffic to the WSWS, its effect has been partially counteracted by readers sharing articles through email and social media. One widely shared article published on September 9, titled "Why aren't trains evacuating people from the path of Hurricane Irma?", has been viewed over 90,000 times.

While only about 300 people reached the article through Google, tens of thousands accessed it through links from other websites and social media platforms.

In April, Google's vice president of engineering, Ben Gomes, announced in a blog post that the search giant would be implementing changes to its search algorithm to "surface more authoritative content." Google's guidelines for human search evaluators, issued around the same time, stressed that "authoritative" content should appear ahead of "alternative viewpoints."

On August 25, World Socialist Web Site Editorial Board Chairman David North issued an open letter to Google (http://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2017/08/25/pers-a25.html) demanding that it stop censoring the Internet and end its political blacklisting of the WSWS.

An online petition (https://petitions.wsws.org/fightcensorship/) calling for Google to end its censorship has received over 3,800 signatures from dozens of countries.

Google, however, has not replied to North's letter.

Recent weeks have seen a drastic escalation in calls for Internet censorship. The campaign to censor the Internet-usually justified in the name of "fighting terrorism" and blacking out "fake news" - has assumed international dimensions and is promoted at the highest levels of government. On ABC's This Week program on Sunday, the first three people interviewed, including British Prime Minister Theresa May, US National Security Adviser Gen. H.R. McMaster, and Adam Schiff, the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, called for stricter control of the Internet.

President Donald Trump responded to last week's terror attack in London with a tweet declaring that "we must cut off" the Internet.

In her newly released book, What Happened?, Hillary Clinton again attributes her defeat to "fake news." She writes approvingly that "Companies such as Facebook, Twitter, and Google have already begun taking steps-adjusting algorithms, deactivating bot networks, and partnering with fact-checkers" - to fight the "torrent of misinformation" supposedly responsible for the outcome of the election.

Google's actions against the World Socialist Web Site and other left and progressive sites are making clear the real targets of Internet censorship: news outlets and political organizations opposing war, social inequality and the domination of society by the financial oligarchy.

SOTT Comment: (https://www.sott.net/article/362423-Information-war-Big-Brother-Google-intensifies-censorship-of-anti-war-websites) Is all of this censorship in service to "authoritative" content any wonder considering that Google was Created and nurtured by the CIA (https://medium.com/insurge-intelligence/how-the-cia-made-google-e836451a959e)?
