Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Exposes The Dark Side Of Politics In 5 Incredible Minutes
"Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) exposed some of the biggest flaws and loopholes in campaign finance laws this week ― and she did it in just five minutes.
During a hearing, the freshman lawmaker created a game in which she pretended to be “a really, really bad guy” who wants to abuse the system as much as possible. Then, in a series of questions, she exposed the world of payoffs, dark money, PACs and more. She even revealed how it was perfectly legal for a lawmaker to invest in an industry, then write laws to benefit that industry and increase the value of the investment.
And as lax as the laws are for members of Congress, there are even fewer restrictions for a president. "

The first draft of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s hotly-anticipated Green New Deal proposal has finally arrived—and it’s demanding rapid action to confront the threat of climate change.
> >
> > Rep. Ocasio-Cortez (D-New York) and Senator Ed Markey (D-Massachusetts) are introducing a resolution Thursday that’s a first step toward making the idea of a Green New Deal reality, reports NPR. The Green New Deal aims to rapidly transition the U.S. economy off fossil fuels and over to green, clean-energy sources through a massive jobs program that will keep equity and justice in mind.
> >
> > It’s not a new idea, but Ocasio-Cortez and youth climate activist groups like the Sunrise Movement have thrown it into the national spotlight over the past few months. Presidential hopefuls have been listening, too. Now, the Congresswoman’s time to show off its details has arrived.
> >
> > The proposal, which NPR obtained, doesn’t shy away from outlining some of the extreme potential consequences of climate change if the planet warms 2 degrees Celsius or more beyond preindustrial levels, including $1 trillion in public infrastructure and coastal real estate damage, a loss of 99 percent of the world’s coral reefs, and mass global migration. It also highlights how U.S. workers suffer from massive inequality, a lack of jobs, and ****ty wages.
> >
> > The deal proposes tackling all these issues at once by transitioning to 100 percent renewable energy in 10 years with the goal of helping the U.S. achieve net-zero emissions. While the proposal doesn’t call for an outright ban on fossil fuels, something it’s already being criticized for, its renewables goal—along with its call to stop the transfer of pollution overseas—“will make new fossil fuel infrastructure or industries obsolete,” said Stephen O’Hanlon, the spokesperson for the Sunrise Movement, told Earther.
> > Young environmental activists occupy the office of Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-Maryland) the incoming majority leader, as they try to pressure Democratic support for a Green New Deal back in December 2018.
> >
> > “We’re clear: We need a full transition off fossil fuels,” O’Hanlon said. “Not only do they cause climate change, but they burden communities around the world, especially working class communities and communities of color with deadly pollution.”
> >
> > This resolution spotlights frontline and vulnerable communities, including “indigenous communities, communities of color, migrant communities, deindustrialized communities, depopulated rural communities, the poor, low-income workers, women, the elderly, the unhoused, people with disabilities, and youth.” The resolution literally lists all these groups, and it calls for radical change that won’t leave them behind.
> >
> > In fact, vulnerable groups should be partners in how this plan translates locally. Sure, the Green New Deal calls for clean water, clean air, access to nature, and infrastructure updates, but it also calls for improved access to higher education, universal healthcare, and affordable housing—social benefits the public doesn’t always associate with the environment.
> >
> > The proposal doesn’t ignore the transportation and agriculture sectors that also emit greenhouse gases, either. And while it calls for further investment in clean energy technology, it doesn’t appear interested in carbon capture technology. Instead, it focuses on natural means of carbon draw-down using soil and forests. This is bound to draw some criticism; many experts believe meeting the Paris goals is likely impossible without this tech.
> >
> > Moreover, the resolution doesn’t include any provisions on how this will all happen. How much energy production should come from solar versus wind? By when? How will this all be paid for? Could a carbon tax help?

Similarly, cap and trade programs assume that existing or new markets can solve this problem for us on their own, and that’s simply not true. The door is not closed for market-based incentives or a diverse array of policy levers to play a role in the Green New Deal, but it would be a small role in the face of the gigantic expansion of our productive economy and would have to be preceded by first creating the solutions in which workers and working class communities are not negatively affected.
> >

Re: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Exposes The Dark Side Of Politics In 5 Incredible Minutes
The funny thing is, she argues that there's enormous potential for abuse of power in the government... And then she's the one who also argues for more power for the government.
But—lo and behold—of course in the hands of the good guys, with proper checks and balances that prevent any misuse of that expanded power.

In my eyes, she's the prototype of the naive poster child to sell a dystopic nanny-state totalitarianism on the people. A useful idiot, used to generate votes, acceptance and obedience to the state.
Therefore, they'll feed her with the most catchy talking points. We're gonna see more of this for sure. This cash cow is gonna get milked.

More on the Nut:
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s “lightning round” on money in politics goes viral
AOC points out it’s “super legal” for her to be a “pretty bad guy.”
By Emily Stewart Feb 8, 2019, 10:10am EST

US campaign finance laws are, well, less than ideal — or, as Rep. Alexandria
Ocasio-Cortez put it in a House committee hearing this week, they make it “super
legal” for lawmakers to be a “pretty bad guy.”
A viral video of Ocasio-Cortez during a hearing held by the House Oversight and
Reform Committee on strengthening ethics rules for the executive branch swept
across the internet this week. The video, put together by NowThis News, shows
the high-profile New York Congress member playing a “lightning round” game with
witnesses. The purpose: to highlight how it’s legal for congressional candidates
to do a lot of shady stuff. And they’re held to a higher standard than the
president.
“I’m going to be the bad guy, which, I’m sure, half the room would agree with
anyway, and I want to get away with as much bad things as possible, ideally to
enrich myself and advance my interests, even if that means putting my interests
ahead of the American people,” Ocasio-Cortez said during the Wednesday hearing.
“I have enlisted all of as my co-conspirators, so you’re going to help me
legally get away with all of this.”
She then asked a litany of questions. Can she run a campaign entirely funded by
corporate political action committees? Yes. Can she use that money to make hush
payments and pay people off to get elected? Yes. Once in office, can she
influence and write laws that might affect the groups from which she’s taken
special interest money? Yes. And can she hold stocks in companies the
legislation she’s writing might boost? Yes.
Walter Shaub, senior adviser to the watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility
and Ethics in Washington and former head of the Office of Government Ethics who
resigned under President Donald Trump, was one of the witnesses in the hearing.
Ocasio-Cortez asked him whether the ethics limits placed on members of Congress
and the president are comparable. “In terms of laws that apply to the president
... there’s almost no laws at all that apply to the president,” he said.
“It’s already super legal, as we’ve seen, for me to be a pretty bad guy. So it’s
even easier for the president of the United States to be one, I would assume,”
Ocasio-Cortez said.
She also took a bit of a swipe at her colleagues.
“We have a system that is fundamentally broken. We have these influences
existing in this body, which means that these influences are here in this
committee shaping the questions that are being asked of you all right now,” she
said.
AOC made a confusing topic easy to understand
The NowThis video, published on Thursday, has been seen more than 13 million
times. It is yet another example of Ocasio-Cortez, one of the most high-profile
new members of Congress, making headlines and generating buzz.
She’s drawing attention to a topic — campaign finance laws in the US — that many
Americans care about but don’t know the specific ins and outs of. People
generally agree that money in politics is a problem that needs fixing: Pew
Research Center polling shows that most Americans believe there should be limits
on the amount of money individuals and groups can spend on campaigns and think
that big donors have more influence than others. But campaign finance laws are
complicated, so many people aren’t aware of what is and isn’t allowed.
Ocasio-Cortez, in her lightning round of questions, identifies a way to break
down campaign finance laws — and all the surprising things they allow — in a way
that’s easy to digest. That a politician can legally take money from, for
example, the oil and gas industry and then, once elected, write laws that help
the industry and invest in oil and gas stocks is pretty wild. As she puts it,
it’s easy for her to be a “pretty bad guy.”
Re: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Exposes The Dark Side Of Politics In 5 Incredible Minutes
Are there no comments on the fact that - in the video that is the original post topic - this person happens to be speaking the truth? I don't like trump (or ANY of the other approximately 1500 people, all duopoly elite, that run the US government), but when he says, "the media are liars", "fake news", "hillary is a criminal", ... I still recognize it as the truth.
"Live and learn, from fools and from sages."
Her role in Congress is as a pressure relief valve. Her role in the democrat party is, like sanders, a shepherd and a deodorizer. But, in this one particular instance some truth hits the airwaves. In the actual, real, 3D, government that is in control of the USA, rather than the one you might want, the mobsters have legalized insider trading for themselves, and they do most certainly write legislation that supports the corporations they invest in, exponentially amplifying their initial offense. I'd guess that most US citizens have no idea the US congresspersons legalized insider trading for themselves, and use it. (It's part of what the billybob clinton, w bush, and obama administrations were about - legalizing the ruling class and their agents' own criminality, which used to be covert.)
"She's right about this one issue, but she's an insane idiot on _______________ "<---("everything else", or "these particular issues: ...") would be a lot more persuasive to me.
Re: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Exposes The Dark Side Of Politics In 5 Incredible Minutes
She's absolutely right about campaign financing and influence peddling but she is so, so wrong on just about everything else that her rightness will get lost in her idiotic green new deal. I predict she will be one and done, but it will be a heck of a show to watch. Between her and Trump the show must go on. My popcorn is ready.
Congress people get one heck of a retirement package, as in salary and medical benefits. Let's see if she keeps her ridiculously high benefits after she loses.

Re: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Exposes The Dark Side Of Politics In 5 Incredible Minutes
definately insane Target.
she also agrees with cuomo, that women in labor, can terminate the childs life.
please tell me I missed the thread on that law in new york, and the one that the virginia polititions said it was alright to kill new born babies, after they made the babies comfortable.
Is that sanity?

Did you see the one I mentioned in my post? (re: insider trading legal for the mobsters)
Here's 2 more:
2.) PACS, especially, but not just AIPAC, own the US Congress
3.) the president has too much power - not just trump (in fact, I think obama was the biggest abuser. Executive Orders were never supposed to be an end-around to allow a president to create legislation.)
When you do not acknowledge the rare truth coming out of some politician's mouth - especially the ones you detest - you lose credibility and risk being seen as someone who can't recognize the truth, or lost in partisanship.
I DON'T defend her personally or professionally, nor am I talking about anything about this person other than what was said in the first/opening post video. I will never, ever, ever, vote for any democrat or any republican ever again. (The other political parties are meaningless, I won't vote for them either.) I don't vote for any of them, and I don't support any of them. But I am smart enough to recognize the truth when someone - fool or sage - speaks it. Like when Tucker Carlson spoke (primarily) the truth about Syria.

Wow Bubu, if you don't understand that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is a mind controlled MK-Ultra pawn of the elite then you need to spend a little more time going down the rabbit hole.
There is no way Cortez would be getting the face time she is getting on the media if they didn't already own her from the cradle to the grave.

I guess I just saw that as a super obvious red herring... bait and switch tactic; these are not new revelations. and she only complains about them, doesn't offer any solutions (so I see them more as statements to gather attention for the actual agenda).
those were just pivot points, as there is no follow through (apparently).
Re: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Exposes The Dark Side Of Politics In 5 Incredible Minutes
So it's okay for Trump and the Oligarch Billionaires to steal the country literally blind, (check the deficit and check their bank accounts), for the Oil Cartel to Rape the Earth, the Chemical Companies to Poison the Water, the Air and the Soil?
And when they're not manufacturing their death and poison for us, I have read that the GDP for the Business of War is excellent.
Trump is the embodiment of a Thief, a Liar and bigot, who just escalated Nuclear War to never before DEFCON....but AOC is "an idiot" or "the devil" for offering the beginning of some kind of road out of the DEATH CULT?
