Archeoastronomy & Our Future - the coming Golden Age
Most history books still teach that about 5000 years ago mankind was a primitive hunter-gatherer incapable of complex thought. Under this paradigm megalithic structures found all over the world were built for sacrificial purposes, to deify a ruler, or to help a society ignorant of the seasons know when to plant its crops. Mankind was thought to be a brutish sort stuck in survival mode, incapable of little more than grunting and groaning. This myopic view is reinforced by misapplied evolutionary theory that requires that anything that came before us must be more primitive.
But the myth and folklore of ancestral people give us a far different story. They speak of a time when mankind walked with the gods and lived in harmony with nature on a pristine Earth. They whisper of a long lost Golden Age, and a celestial driven cycle where the rise and fall of the ages flows like seasons. Most of all, they speak with reverence about the stars and our connection with the heavens.
It has recently been discovered that most megalithic structures (cairns, tombs, henges, etc. around the globe) are astronomically aligned, or positioned to mark the solstices and cardinal points. Huge stones are one of the few things that still stand after several thousand years and these structures bespeak of a worldwide civilization attuned to the heavens - and more. Scientist John Burke, author of Seed of Knowledge Stone of Plenty, has found that the magnetic polarity of the 66 remaining stones at Avebury are all positioned with their positive poles facing the next one in line – a discovery with huge implications! John took over a thousand readings with a flux magnetometer but how did the Ancients know about such subtle forces? And why did they align them in a pattern similar to a modern particle accelerator? Such discoveries suggest the megalithic builders understood certain electromagnetic properties and utilized them for purposes we have still not discovered.
One theme of this thread is to look closely at the Great Year, and its mechanism that so fascinated the Ancients; the precession of the equinox. This task was begun by Giorgio de Santillana and Hertha von Deschend, in their book Hamlet’s Mill. This epic work documents hundreds of bits of myth and folklore from over thirty separate ancient cultures that all seem to tie the rise and fall of man and history to the procession (or rather precession – backward movement) of the equinox through the constellations of the zodiac. While these brilliant scholars died before deciphering the reasons for all this interest in precession, they did think it odd that so many cultures would be consumed with a motion that is hardly noticeable in the average lifespan today. They wondered if it had a great purpose.
Modern science tells us precession is an obscure effect due to lunisolar forces acting upon the oblate Earth and has nothing to do with history or the ages of man. At least that is the present theory.

It has lost relevance for our affairs, whereas once it was the only majestic secular motion that our ancestors could keep in mind when they looked for a great cycle, which could affect humanity as a whole. But then our ancestors were astronomers and astrologers. They believed that the sliding of the sun along the equinoctial point affected the frame of the cosmos and determined a succession of world ages under different zodiacal signs. They had found a large peg on which to hang their thoughts about cosmic time, which brought all things in fateful order. Today, that order has lapsed like the idea of the cosmos itself. There is only history, which has been felicitously defined as “one damn thing after another”.
Contrary to modern theories, some ancient myth and iconography, like that of the mysterious Mithraic culture, suggests that the observable of precession (stars moving across sky) is due to our Sun orbiting another star. In a process similar to the Earth orbiting the Sun (which produces seasons) – they see the Sun’s vastly greater orbit producing changing conditions on Earth and a rise and fall in consciousness on a grand scale. The 1960’s lyric “the dawning of the age of Aquarius” is a reference to this ancient belief that as the equinox precesses through the constellations of the zodiac to a certain point, it will once again usher in a higher age. Could there be any truth to this belief? Modern scientists scoff at the very question. Thus the ancient and modern worldviews of precession and its impact on history and consciousness couldn’t be more opposed.
In the thread we will look at this grand idea from every angle: Could precession have another cause and might our Sun have a companion star? If so, what are its mechanics and how might orbital changes in stellar electromagnetic fields affect the Earth’s ionosphere, magnetosphere and consciousness in a cyclical pattern? What does myth say about the higher ages and what evidence do we find to support them? How do we tell time on the Celestial Clock of the ages and where exactly are we now? Are we really at the dawning of greater awareness or a new time? How much did the Ancients really know?
In the standard paradigm of history anomalous artifacts like the Greek Antikythera device (a thousand years before the invention of complex precision gears) or the Baghdad batteries (two thousand years before Volta invented the battery) do not make sense. Likewise, ancient hints of subtle forces whether it is Qigong or Feng Shui in China, or the electromagnetic and electrostatic properties found at Mesoamerican mounds and pyramids, are baffling to the modern mindset. But the ancient idea of a Great Year provides a logical context in which to fit such knowledge and gives meaning to myth and folklore from around the world.
So far the collective efforts of many cutting edge scientists and historians show that there appears to have been a relatively advanced civilization all over the globe at a time when our textbooks tell us we were simple hunter-gatherers. The people had in-depth knowledge of geometry, mathematics, celestial motions, efficient and sustainable agriculture, specialized soils still un-reproducible today, plant hybridization, animal husbandry, hydraulics, poetry, music and epic story telling, and of course the ability to build huge carefully engineered structures that aligned to mirror the heavens. More difficult to believe is further evidence that suggests they had fantastic memories and understood principles of subtle energies of which we are still unaware, and quite possibly, telepathy and clairvoyance, or other higher age sciences, we still cannot conceive.
My hope is that this thread will stand as a jumping off for many discussions pertaining to the enormous amount of reseach out there proving that we are heading up to a Golden Age once again.

First one must understand the concept of the Great Year, named by Plato, or otherwise known as The Yuga Cycle according to the Hindus.
The Great Year, is the term that some ancient civilizations use to describe the slow precession of the equinox through the twelve houses of the ancient zodiac, a period that takes about 24,000 years; 12,000 years ascending into a higher age, and 12,000 years descending into a lower age.These cycles bring about a complete change, both externally and internally.
Precession now equates to one cycle in about 25,770 (25,920) years only because we are near apoapsis, the slow part of the elliptical orbit. According to Kepler’s laws, as the Sun moves towards periapsis, the rate will continue to accelerate and will average near 24,000 years.
The development of the human consciousness is gradually divided into four different stages in one period of 12000 years.
Satya Yuga (Golden Age; 4800 years)
Treta Yuga (Silver Age; 3600 years)
Dwapara Yuga (Bronze Age; 2400 years)
Kali Yuga (Stone or Iron Age; 1200 years)
Every age has an ascending and a descending period time in addition to the time of the Yuga itself. It is like a transitional period from one Yuga to the other and these are called “Sandhis”. Kali Yuga (1200 years) Sandhis is 100 years before and 100 years after its 1000 year long age. Dwapara Yuga (2400 years) Sandhis is 200 before and 200 after its 2000 year long age
Treta Yuga (3600 years) sandhis is 300 years before and after. Sataya Yuga (4800) Sandhis is 400 years before and after.
Each of the Yugas has much influence over the period to time covered by it
Virgo is the sign opposite Pisces. The Autumnal Equinox is now falling in Virgo; the opposite point, the Vernal Equinox, is by force now falling in Pisces.Those who consider the Vernal Equinox to have chief significance, therefore say the world is now in the “Piscean Age”.
The Equinoxes have a retrograde movement in the constellations. When the Equinox will leave Pisces-Virgo, they will enter Aquarius-Leo.
The Great year is 24000 according to Swami Sri Yukteswar (1894). Present age of Dwapara Yuga (today 2012) is 312. The world will enter the Aquarius-Leo in A.D 2499.

Hamlet's Mill: An Essay Investigating the Origins of Human Knowledge and its Transmission Through Myth by Giorgio De Santillana and Hertha Von Dechend
There are essentially two separate theses in Hamlet’s Mill. The first thesis deals with the coherent nature of myths all over the world. This thesis takes up the majority of the book and is the primary thesis. The assertion is that all major mythologies from all over the world are fundamentally connected. To prove this the authors show the connections and similarities of myths from every major cultural group. The major point of this thesis is to show the reason why myths all over the world have a similar form is that they all draw from the same source, astronomy. The authors argue that myths from all over the world originally were references to astronomical observations. Thus all myths have common connecting threads and references.
They state that the only way to explain these similarities is to use astronomical observations, something the archeological and anthropological communities seemed to have ignored up to that point. In the introduction and the first few chapters the authors make a big deal out of the fact that other scholars in their field have never considered an astronomical (or cosmological) explanation to myths and legends. Therefore the authors feel it imperative that they explain their thesis so that others will consider this possibility. From their assessment it is the only explanation which makes sense, due to the striking similarities between myths all over the world. Furthermore they try to establish a direct connection between the myths and the actual astronomical observations made by ancient cultures.
By establishing a link between the different constellations and the growth and spread of the myths through out the world, the authors are attempting to show that the mythologies of ancient (and modern!) cultures first grew out of astronomy. This is to say that highly specific and accurate astronomical observations grew into and became the major world mythologies, as opposed to the commonly accepted idea that world myths (myths of creation and world phenomena such as weather) were the basis of and the inspiration for the original astronomical observations. To present it schematically the commonly accepted theory of the development of mythologies, and by extension astronomy, would be:
Mysticism –> Mythology –> Astronomical Observations motivated by the mythology –> Modern Astronomy
This is contrasted with the author’s approach which can be characterized thus:
Accurate Astronomical Observations –> Mythology motivated by the observations –> More Recent Astronomical Observations –> Modern Astronomy
The authors also argue that mysticism, at least the ancient mysticism that we “know” of grew out of the mythologies after people had forgotten that the myths were simply a way of remembering the complex astronomical observations. This conclusion and the reasoning behind the authors’ approach is based on an assumption that is central to the author’s second thesis.
The second thesis given in the book is most clearly expressed after Chapter Four in what they call an Intermezzo (Intermission), aptly titled A Guide for the Perplexed. In this chapter they pause in their narration of the myths and legends related to the story of Hamlet, to “take stock” and give some guidance to the admittedly complex narration. While they take this intermission to introduce the first and primary thesis they also incidentally layout the secondary thesis. The secondary thesis is arguably the more important of the the two and provides greater and farther reaching insight into ancient cultures. As presented by the authors the second thesis is no more than conjecture but gains support from the validity of the first thesis.
The second thesis is founded on the idea of cyclic time as opposed to linear time. This idea is integral with and underlies all arguments made by the authors regarding ancient cultures and how we should view them. The concept of cyclic time as opposed to linear time has two major applications in studying and understanding ancient cultures. The first deals with understanding how the ancient people viewed the world and the proper mindset that we should have in attempting to understand them. The second deals primarily with how we view them and their abilities of reason.
To understand the second thesis and its implications we need to understand the concept of cyclic time. Suffice it to say that our modern concept of time is inextricably linked to the concept of linear time, so being able to understand cyclic time is perhaps the hardest part of understanding anything in Hamlet’s Mill. In considering the ancient concept of cyclic time we must admit that we are approaching it with a bias (even by using the word ancient we express our bias) and we must be prepared to give up all that we know or think we know about the world.
As the authors tell it, the academic community does more than merely overlook the concept of cyclic time, they either ignore it or hold it in contempt, but they contend that if we are to understand anything about ancient cultures we must understand the concept of cyclic time. I have previously run across the concept from two unrelated sources so, since Hamlet’s Mill was written it seems that the concept has at least been mentioned in academic circles but the lack of more mention of it is a good indication that there has been absolutely no progress in understanding ancient cultures since Hamlet’s Mill was published.
To put it simply the modern concept of time is linear and the ancient concept of time involves cycles. To put it bluntly, ancient peoples did not view the world the same way we do. For us we think of time as having a definite duration and direction, as in thinking of time as an arrow. For ancient people time repeated itself just like a wheel will rotate and come back to where it started from. Time consists of cycles, the cycle of a day (the sun rises it moves through the sky, it sets and starts over), the changing of the seasons, the movements of the planets, stars and moon. Even the cycle of life repeats itself. Thus to the ancient cultures all things were governed by cycles of time, some longer and some shorter.
Indeed the different cycles of time could be ordered in such a way from the least to the greatest, with the greater (longer) governing the lesser (shorter), just as the equinoxes govern the seasons and the seasons the days (that is the seasons determine what the days will be like, and the equinoxes govern when the seasons will come). So as there are cycles which govern each aspect of life it is the longer cycles that ultimately govern over all other cycles and the longest cycle that ancient cultures knew of was the precession of the equinoxes, which has an approximately 26,000 year cycle. Thus as the precession of the equinoxes was the longest and greatest known cycle it governed over and determined all others. To the ancient mind it could be considered the ultimate driving force behind all aspects of life. Just as the seasons bring with them warmth and life or cold and death, the thing which governed over the seasons (the equinoxes) were thus more important for determining the fate of men. With this in mind it would only be natural to conclude that that which governed over the equinoxes was more important than them all.

Thank you for sharing this important information. A thought I had whole reading the third post was that myths around the world are similar not only because of the link to the stars, but also because their connection within. I believe that they saw the stories they felt on inner dimensions projected in the cosmos. As above so below. Whithin and without. Today we are largely cut off from the mythic level of our earthly experience.

No, not Aquarius.
We aren't continuing to go up the ascending side of the cycle, dim. It's a gradual climb. Every moment should be better than the last. We don't stay asleep and then the day go into the Silver age and suddenly awaken. We awakening now.

Very nice posts. One thing is there seems to be some different interpretations of the Yugas as described by the hindu's. Actually I think the more common one has the different ages, Kali, satya, etc lasting for hundreds of thousands of years before they shift. I have also seen them described in the shorter periods that you mentioned quite a bit too though. Any insite as to these large differences in years?
