Default First Genetically Modified Human Embryo: Is This Ethical?

Scientists have created the first genetically modified embryo, then when finished with the fun research, killed it off. So, it appears ethics isnt playing any role in genetic modifications, and if they get away with this much, what's next?

Just Playing devil's advocate here. What if they said they killed the embryo but didn't? Seems to be a much easier path if the story kind of dies from here.

To me it doesn't make sense that they would euthanize after their so-called success.

I would think they would have let it develop as long as it could and then build upon that.

I highly doubt that is the "first" ...

Yes, likely many since, Dedukshyn. This article is from 2008, and i saw another one recently but couldnt find it, but found this instead.

This technology raises the spectre of the following occuring:

    1) genetically engineered people for specific purposes, such as super soldiers, or to fill some corporate fascist niche
    2) the rise of designer babies where the parents pick hair color, sex, complexion, iq, submissiveness, etc.
    3) the ability to transhumanize (ie. cyborgtize) people before delivering to the procurers of (a) and (b). If cyborgtized, then the person is likely programmable, like an obedient drone.

This would be a true dystopia.
