    Default Old Knowledge

    http://oldknowledge.rodev.net/indexa.html

A (small) repository of knowledge from a time before the corporate driven agendas. The site is no longer supported but most of the links are still currently working.

Quote An extensive list of E-Books (PDF format) of Old Knowledge in the way things were done 100+ years ago.
These books are a testimony of the skills, ingenuity and resolve of our fore fathers.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------

An example of the headings within a couple of sections:-

    Heating / Refrigeration Ventilation

Refrigeration, cold storage and ice-making; a practical treatise on the art and science of refrigeration (1912)
    Answers_on_refrigeration_and_ice_making_a_practical_treatise_with_illustrations (1914)
Audels Answers on Refrigeration and Ice Making 1911
Furnace Heating A Practical and Comprehensive Treatise on Warming Buildings with Hot Air (1909)

    Health / Medical

A Practical treatise on diseases of children (1873)
A Practical treatise upon eczema: Including Its Lichenous and Impetiginous Forms (1875)
    Culpeper's English physician.pdf
The complete herbal (ca 1650s)The complete herbal (ca 1650s)
Eczema and its management A Practical Treatise Based on Study of 3000 Cases (1881)
Practical Homoeopathic Treatise on the Diseases of Women and Children (1866)
    Epitome of Homoeopathic Medicines (1876)

There is a huge range of topics, pretty much anything you could think of that might be valuable to know for a different way of life. Lots of info about farming and husbandry, from the health of soils to the diet of various animals. Basket weaving, brewing, leatherwork, preservation, trapping etc.

    Post Update:

Following a search for a book with dead link I found two more websites devoted to digitising books, one of which is quite well known already I suspect. The second, however, far outdoes the primary site linked above with a veritable wealth of old knowledge for just about any subject you could think of.

as for ANCIENT knowledge: I was just recently in Ambroise, France (on the Loire) where Leonardo DaVinci spent the last yrs. of his life; the museum exhibiting his inventions is just wonderfull-

but I think, as DaVinci was an insider, he just rediscovered technologies from earlier times; if one has read Laurence Gardner's "Genesis of the Grail Kings" the hanging gardens of Babylon actually existed and the Sumerians managed/knew how to get water to flow UP a ramp against gravity in order to water the gardens-

one of DaVinci's exhibited 'inventions' (ahem!) shown in this museum was how to get water from a stream to flow UP a ramp...

Curiosities of Science, Past and Present, by John Timbs published in 1858 and holds many gems

    Quote Gentle Reader,

The volume of “Curiosities” which I here present to your notice is a portion of the result of a long course of reading, observation, and research,..................The sciences here illustrated are, in the main, Astronomy and Meteorology; Geology and Paleontology; Physical Geography; Sound, Light, and Heat; Magnetism and Electricity,—the latter with special attention to the great marvel of our times, the Electro-magnetic Telegraph. I hope, at no very distant period, to extend the “Curiosities” to another volume, to include branches of Natural and Experimental Science which are not here presented.
    November 1858
This beauty basically has a summation dedicated to question by question, as was the knowledge in 1858 such as:

Quote IS THE PLANET MARS INHABITED?

The opponents of the doctrine of the Plurality of Worlds allow that a greater probability exists of Mars being inhabited than in the case of any other planet. His diameter is 4100 miles; and his surface exhibits spots of different hues,—the seas, according to Sir John Herschel, being green, and the land red. “The variety in the spots,” says this astronomer, “may arise from the planet not being destitute of atmosphere and cloud; and what adds greatly to the probability of this, is the appearance of brilliant white spots at its poles, which have been conjectured, with some probability, to be snow, as they disappear when they have been long exposed to the sun, and are greatest when emerging from the long night of their polar winter, the snow-line then extending to about six degrees from the pole.” “The length of the day,” says Sir David Brewster, “is almost exactly twenty-four hours,—the same as that of the earth. Continents and oceans and green savannahs have been observed upon Mars, and the snow of his polar regions has been seen to disappear with the heat of summer.” We actually see the clouds floating in the atmosphere of Mars, and there is the appearance of land and water on his disc. In a sketch of this planet, as seen in the pure atmosphere of Calcutta by Mr. Grant, it appears, to use his words, “actually83 as a little world,” and as the earth would appear at a distance, with its seas and continents of different shades. As the diameter of Mars is only about one half that of our earth, the weight of bodies will be about one half what it would be if they were placed upon our globe.
So they back then knew the size of Mars and it's length of day....but the silly buggers got the rest wrong....or did they??

    Or:

Quote HOW THE GULF-STREAM REGULATES THE TEMPERATURE OF LONDON.

Great Britain is almost exactly under the same latitude as Labrador, a region of ice and snow. Apparently, the chief cause of the remarkable difference between the two climates arises from the action of the great oceanic Gulf-Stream, whereby this country is kept constantly encircled with waters warmed by a West-Indian sun.

Were it not for this unceasing current from tropical seas, London, instead of its present moderate average winter temperature of 6° above the freezing-point, might for many months annually be ice-bound by a settled cold of 10° to 30° below that point, and have its pleasant summer months replaced by a season so short as not to allow corn to ripen, or only an alpine vegetation to flourish.

Nor are we without evidence afforded by animal life of a greater cold having prevailed in this country at a late geological period. One case in particular occurs within eighty miles of London, at the village of Chillesford, near Woodbridge, where, in a bed of clayey sand of an age but little (geologically speaking) anterior to the London gravel, Mr. Prestwich has found a group of fossil shells in greater part identical with species now living in the seas of Greenland and of similar latitudes, and which must evidently, from their perfect condition and natural position, have existed in the place where they are now met with.—Lectures on the Geology of Clapham, &c. by Joseph Prestwich, A.R.S., F.G.S.

This is the list of contents:

    Introductory 1–10
    Physical Phenomena 11–26
    Sound and Light 27–53
    Astronomy 54–103
    Geology and Paleontology 104–145
    Meteorological Phenomena 146–169
Physical Geography of the Sea 170–192
    Magnetism and Electricity 193–219
    The Electric Telegraph 220–228
    Miscellanea 229–241

But each section holds many questions and answers.... It is good to read and maybe closer to the actual truth than we are currently told?

Something a little heavier....and these days completely derided....although all the current science literature just calls it 'Dark Matter' or some such as they could not, nor can accept that they are incorrect! But that is only my personal consideration

Aether and Gravitation, by William George Hooper

    Written in 1903.

    Quote INTRODUCTORY NOTES

The author in this work endeavours to solve the greatest scientific problem that has puzzled scientists for the past two hundred years. The question has arisen over and over again, since the discovery of universal gravitation by Sir Isaac Newton, as to what is the physical cause of the attraction of gravitation.

“Action at a distance” has long ceased to be recognized as a possible phenomenon, although up to the present, the medium and method of gravitational attraction have not yet been discovered.

It is, however, generally accepted by scientists, that the only possible medium which can give rise to the phenomena incidental to, and associated with the Law of Gravitation, must be the universal aether, which forms the common medium of all phenomena associated with light, heat, electricity and magnetism.
It is an interesting book (well for me anyway) but the author does 'push' toward a need for a 'God' especially toward the end .... but hey that shouldn't detract from the main concept of the thoughts!

Quote Thus, step by step, we have tried to build up a theory of the physical cause of all phenomena, which will satisfactorily account for those phenomena, and even for the structure of the universe itself, from the mechanical standpoint, and by so doing have fulfilled the third Rule of our Philosophy as enunciated by Newton and others.

So that by the conception that Aether is matter, in its primordial state, we have more than fulfilled all that was premised should be done.

Thus the long-sought-for and long-expected cause of Gravitation, together with the cause of the two complementary forces, is found in the simple statement that Aether is matter, with all that is logically included therein. Kepler's Laws and Newton's Laws of Motion also receive a physical explanation in the same universal electro-magnetic Aether.

In addition to the solution of these problems, the transverse vibrations of light has received for the first time a physical conception, and a physical explanation, even admitting that that explanation may not be perfect in detail.

The origin of the permanent magnetism of the earth has also received a physical explanation through the motions of this same electro-magnetic Aether, while certain theories in relation to electricity given to the world by Ampère, Weber, Faraday, and Clerk Maxwell have found their consummation in this atomic electro-magnetic medium.

    Default Re: Old Knowledge

Now this book I posted a link to in Bill's thread regarding a question....but the book is rather interesting in it's entirety!

The Bondage and Travels of Johann
Schiltberger, a Native of Bavaria, by Johann Schiltberger

    1396–1427

So this is about the travels of an individual within the years 1396–1427 through Europe, Asia and Africa.

I found it rather dramatic and most likely exaggerated! But that is only my thought on the written narrative.

    Such things as:

Quote There is a country called Walaschoen; it has a high mountain where many precious stones are found; but nobody can take them because of the serpents and wild beasts. When it rains, it is the torrent that brings them down, then come the experts who know them, and pick them out of the mud. There are also unicorns in those mountains
    Also details as:

Quote Of the tower of Babilony that is of such great height.

I have also been in the kingdom of Babilonien. Babilonien is called Waydat in the Infidel tongue. The great Babilonie was surrounded by a wall, twenty-five leagues broad, and one league is three Italian miles; the wall was two hundred cubits high and fifty cubits thick, and the river Euffrates courses through the middle of the city; but it is now all in ruins, and there is no longer any habitation in it. The tower of Babilonien is distant fifty four stadia, and four stadia is an Italian mile, and in several places it is X leagues in length and in breadth. The tower is in the desert of Arabia, on the road when one goes into the kingdom of Kalda; but none can get there because of the dragons and serpents, and other hurtful reptiles, of which there are many in the said desert. The tower was built by a king who is called in the Infidel tongue, Marburtirudt
But on the whole the book is very much an enjoyment to read and does create multiple paths of research....if one so wishes?

It also includes a 'map' of the travels at that time:

    http://www.gutenberg.org/files/52569...images/map.jpg

Rather large but worth having if you read the journal.

The link for options as to view/download is:

as the above, first, link is HTML

Here is a book regarding the City of London (which we all know is not a part of the UK)

The Corporation of London: Its Rights and Privileges

by William Ferneley Allen sheriff of London and Middlesex, and alderman of the ward of Cheap.

    Written 1858

    Quote PREFACE.

Some apology is necessary on the part of one whose acquaintance with civic affairs is of such recent date, for presuming to stand forth as the champion of the fights and privileges of the City of London. No man of common spirit, however, could tamely submit to the insulting charges and coarse insinuations with which the Corporation has long been assailed by malevolent or ignorant individuals. That the civic system is free from spot or blemish, no one in his senses would pretend to assert. But it may honestly and truly be asserted that the Court of Aldermen have both the power and the inclination to amend whatever is defective, and to introduce whatever reforms are desirable, without the irritating and officious interference of the imperial legislature. The system may not be perfect, for it is of human origin; but its administrators are men of upright character, practically conversant with the requirements of trade, and animated by am earnest desire to promote the interests of their fellow-citizens. Why, then, are they not intrusted with the honourable task of gradually improving the machinery of the civic government, and of completing the good work they have long since spontaneously inaugurated? It might, perhaps, have been better had this pamphlet never taken form and substance. A feeble advocate endangers, and oftentimes loses, the best possible cause; but still, out of the fulness of the heart the mouth will speak, and pour forth sentiments and feelings that no longer brook control. This, at least, is the only excuse that can be offered for troubling the public with the opinions of a comparative novice.

    7, LEADENHALL STREET, July 26th, 1858.
Not an entertaining foray into this area but if you are of the nature to investigate the true structure of power and from where it arose....then maybe of interest to you?

Quote Yet one other proof of "liberality" before we close these desultory observations. At present the Corporation exercises a watchful surveillance over all persons acting as brokers within the City of London. No one, indeed, is permitted to carry on that highly responsible business without the previous sanction of the Court of Aldermen. This restriction is admitted to have been most beneficial to the public, and the brokers themselves are fully sensible of its advantage to themselves by inspiring a reasonable confidence in their honour and respectability. All this, however, is to be done away with. Government care for none of these things. They prefer punishment to prevention. Let every man do as seemeth good in his own eyes, provided only that he escape conviction for evildoing. In that case the "majesty of the law" will be vindicated by the house of correction or the gallows. Why then take any thought to check the downward step? That is the province of parents, masters, and pastors. The wisdom of the Legislature cannot stoop to such elemental questions. It is unworthy of the wise and illustrious senators of this great empire to take heed of such a vulgar consideration as commercial morality. This is a free country, wherein every man may freely live, providing for himself, and warring upon his kind. Such throughout is the tone and the spirit of the proposed measure for the "better regulation" of the City of London. If this is better, it is devoutly to be hoped that no future ministry will bring forward a Bill for the "best regulation." Every additional step in this direction can only be worse than its predecessor, for the goal to be attained is not only the ruin of civic influence, but the subversion of self-government throughout the realm.

For the present, indeed, this precious Bill has been withdrawn; but let not a suspension of hostilities be construed into a conclusion of peace. The question will certainly be brought before Parliament under a modified form in the ensuing Session, and it is then that the fate of the Corporation will be decided.

I must say this next quote from the very short 'book' reads so much of BREXIT that it is funny!

Quote Are the citizens of London—are the people of Great Britain—prepared to resign without a struggle the last of the glorious rights and privileges bequeathed to them by their Saxon ancestors? Are they willing to exchange their old ancestral customs and usages for the dogmatic theories and arbitrary practices of continental systems? In short, will they consent to barter freedom for absolutism, the happiness and independence of the many for the aggrandizement of the few? For that is the real question at issue, and one the answer to which cannot be much longer deferred.

    1858....?

Bloody hell it is Brexit lol.

This is an interesting book (must stop saying that as if I didn't find it of interest....I wouldn't post it lol) which is all about Climate Change!

CLIMATIC CHANGES THEIR NATURE AND CAUSES BY ELLSWORTH HUNTINGTON

    Written 1922

The thing I like about this is that it covers so very much that I conclude that back in 1922 they knew vastly more but with less technology!

All the current thoughts expressed today, either by 'science' or 'tinfoil hats' are within it.... except one???

It also discusses that other stars in their movement and thus proximity to Sol would create a glaciation of Earth!

A great read....although quite a bit out of my comfort zone with my limited knowledge of the subject.

It does cover the electric universe, sun spots, carbon dioxide, displacement of the Earths crust due to changes of electrical currents within the Earths core due to Sol.... in fact so very much....good book in my view.

Actually the views expressed within the book regarding "displacement of the Earths crust due to changes of electrical currents within the Earths core due to Sol" should probably go in this thread:

"The Next End of the World": a CIA declassified document, 'The Adam and Eve Story'

Read if you wish....or do not.

Compulsory Vaccination by Marylebone Anti-Compulsory Vaccination League

    Written in 1870.

Just shows the circular nature of this narrative....in my view

I found this interesting when I was researching the Bank of England.

It is the 'history' of families (although it calls it "Visiting Homes") and is, well to me at least, revelling!

Little Journeys to the Homes of Great Businessmen by Elbert Hubbard

    Written 1912.

It covers the family histories of these dear gentlemen:

    Quote
    ROBERT OWEN
    JAMES OLIVER
    STEPHEN GIRARD
    MAYER A. ROTHSCHILD
    PHILIP D. ARMOUR
    JOHN J. ASTOR
    PETER COOPER
    ANDREW CARNEGIE
    GEORGE PEABODY
    A. T. STEWART
    H. H. ROGERS

A book about symbols....well mainly just the one

    The Swastika

    Quote THE EARLIEST KNOWN SYMBOL, AND ITS MIGRATIONS;
WITH OBSERVATIONS ON THE MIGRATION OF
    CERTAIN INDUSTRIES IN PREHISTORIC TIMES.
Quote From the Report of the U. S. National Museum for 1894
Now it holds many images (drawings) which many be of interest.

Note: Would you, the kind reader, like me to offer my own consideration of these books? Or should I just provide the links?

So here are some books which I have been 'looking' at with regard to spiritual knowledge.

These books and the above post (also other threads within Avalon) have 'changed' my opinion....

The links are to pages which allow you the choice of viewing option....such as HTML or Kindle etc.

Popular Superstitions, and the Truths Contained Therein by Herbert Mayo

A Compendium on the Soul by Abu-`Aly al-Husayn Ibn `Abdallah Ibn Sina

Fundamental Principles of the Metaphysic of Morals by Immanuel Kant

The Fairy Mythology by Thomas Keightley

The Zen Experience by Thomas Hoover

The Metaphysical Elements of Ethics by Immanuel Kant

Sacred Books of the East by Aśvaghosha et al

    Our Eternity by Maurice Maeterlinck

Human Personality and Its Survival of Bodily Death by F. W. H. Myers

There is No Death by Florence Marryat

The Way of Initiation; or, How to Attain Knowledge of the Higher Worlds by Steiner

The Law of Psychic Phenomena by Thomson Jay Hudson

An Outline of Occult Science by Rudolf Steiner

Reincarnation and the Law of Karma by William Walker Atkinson

The Other World; or, Glimpses of the Supernatural

The Philosophy of Spiritual Activity by Rudolf Steiner

    As a question for you?

I comprehend that these 'old' books are hard to read. Many contain only a few paragraphs and the 100-300 year old ones are somewhat 'fun' in their words!
They also are very lengthy....but then they didn't have television nor computers so???

Would it be of assistance if I, as I read a book, make 'bullet point' summaries?
It would detract from your potential enjoyment if ever you had the time to read the book....but maybe it would help?

    Let me know.

Edit to add: This is an interesting thread which is connected to the above books along with a paper within it.

    Just another wake up call…

How to Know Higher Worlds by Rudolf Steiner Audiobook Pt. 1

    Phil Harris
