Most North American cities east of the Rocky Mountains rarely have earthquakes, the USGS also said. A majority of the region, from the mountain chain to the Atlantic Ocean can go years without a temblor that is large enough to be felt. Several U.S. states have never reported a damaging earthquake.

"I was talking with the other seismologists and we said, 'Wow, we don't ever remember a quake in Delaware,'" Paul Caruso, a geophysicist with the USGS's earthquake information center in Colorado, told the Associated Press.

There has been evidence that some quakes that hit parts of central and eastern North America earthquakes were triggered by human activity that changed the stress conditions in the earth's crust enough to cause faulting, the USGS reported.

Activities that have induced such quakes have included impounding water behind dams, injecting fluid into the planet's crust, extracting fluid or gas, and removing rock during mining or quarrying operations.

I was watching the special edition from Dutchsince yesterday while the USGS was modifying the quake magnitude from 5.1 to 4.4 to 4.6 and on during Dutch's recording. Last Sunday, he had predicted a mid-three magnitude quake for Thursday near Washington, DC. Really good forecasting! I am glad that there was no major damage reported.

Whoa, LadyM! Are you sure that it was the USGS that admitted that "injecting fluid into the planet's crust" would cause quakes? That would include fracking operations which the USGS has consistently labeled as safe.

I find Dutchsince fascinating & seems to be knowledgeable; thanks Star Tsar!! Dutch did forecast the quake that happened in NJ...unusual, as well. Avalon is such a great place to be!
