Sigmund Fraud? New bio traces Freud's journey from one crackpot idea to the next

    Kyle Smith National Review
    Tue, 19 Dec 2017 19:20 UTC

A new biography demolishes whatever was left of the Viennese con man's reputation.

Writing to his close friend and collaborator Wilhelm Fliess in 1890, Sigmund Freud explained that he couldn't pay a visit because, in a struggling psychiatric practice that suckered rich society women in Vienna,
"My most important client is just now going through a kind of nervous crisis and might get well in my absence."
No, Freud wasn't being ironic: He depended on grandes dames to stay in business. On another occasion, referring to a cartoon in which a yawning lion grumbles, "Twelve o'clock and no negroes," he wrote, "The worries begin again whether some negroes will turn up at the right time to still the lion's appetite." That appetite, as Frederick Crews makes clear in his exhaustive, reputation-pulverizing book Freud: The Making of an Illusion, was from an early age for fame and riches, which Freud relentlessly pursued by championing one faddish quack remedy after another, backing away when justified criticism made his position untenable, covering his tracks with misleading or even completely false claims about what he'd been up to, then bustling on to the next gold mine.

In 1884, for instance, in the giddy throes of a fondness for cocaine that Freud would indulge on and off for some 15 years, he had the marvelous idea of treating a brilliant young scientist, Ernst Fleischl von Marxow, for a mild morphine addiction (resulting from surgery) by putting the patient on cocaine. Instead, Fleischl became hugely addicted to both morphine and cocaine - sleepless nights, strung-out dozy days - and wasted away into a scarecrow while Freud, writing about the patient under a pseudonym, bragged in a paper about the tremendous success of his experiment.

Meanwhile, a colleague of Freud was discovering an actual useful application of cocaine, as a topical anesthetic that opened the door to new kinds of surgery (such as on the eye). This was a truly revolutionary breakthrough and Freud had nothing to do with it. Later he would suggest that he had been on the brink of making the discovery but had been distracted by his fiancée, Martha.

The case for Freud's misogyny is ludicrously easy to make. After his cocaine frenzy, Freud headed to Paris to study with Jean-Martin Charcot, who oversaw an insane asylum full of women upon whom he freely experimented and operated under the assumption that they were suffering from "hysteria," an almost exclusively feminine phenomenon in which sex organs supposedly caused otherwise unexplained behavior and bodily disorders.

Freud would carry the concept of hysteria to breathtaking extremes in his private practice: Leg pain? Morphine addiction? Asthma? Freud treated patients with these disorders under the working theory that they were suffering from hysteria, which among his mostly female clientele morphed into an assumption that the origin story of all neurosis was a childhood sexual trauma, which he called the "seduction theory" and which Crews relabels "molestation theory," since a small child who has suffered a sexual assault is not actually a seducer.

If the patient couldn't remember any childhood sexual trauma, Freud would "reconstruct" it by coaching her to devise one. Despite claiming in a typically grandiose but evidence-free 1896 lecture that his psychoanalysis had helped unveil and repair childhood sexual trauma in 18 patients - the speech was so devoid of clinical standards that a senior scientist, Richard von Krafft-Ebing, said, "It sounds like a scientific fairy tale" - Freud later revealed in a letter to Fliess that he hadn't cured even one person.

In one of the many horror stories Crews documents at length, Fliess, with Freud's eager encouragement, nearly killed a patient whose symptoms suggest she was a hemophiliac who had an ovarian cyst by operating on her nose and removing a chunk of bone, on the crackpot theory he called "nasal reflex neurosis" that the genital-based hysteria natural to women was traceable to cartilage in the nose. As the suffering woman, Emma Eckstein, nearly bled to death while Freud bungled her recovery, he blanched and nearly vomited, regaining his poise only with the aid of a glass of brandy. "So, this is the strong sex?" asked Eckstein. Freud continued to insist that "she bled out of longing" (emphasis his) and when a (female) surgeon noticed Eckstein had an abscess treatable by a single incision, she recalled that Freud "asked me with biting scorn whether I believed that hysterical pain could be cured by the knife." Later Freud observed that Eckstein for some reason reacted badly to being called unattractive after half her face had been caved in by the surgery.

Freud's Studies in Hysteria, in which he played a heroic mind-detective who dug up the patient's hidden actual troubles, simply adapted the fad for Sherlock Holmes stories (of which he was a fan) into a medical realm, adding a dollop of erotic titillation dressed up in clinical detachment. "The principal point is that I should guess the secret and tell it to the patient straight out," he wrote. Diagnosis first, then make the facts fit. When they didn't, Freud felt no compunction about using the techniques of fiction writing to play up his own prowess. As Crews shows, the idea of therapeutically talking through problems didn't originate with Freud, and though psychoanalytic theory has little to no value, what Freud brought to it was mainly borrowed from Fliess - ideas about sexual latency, bisexuality, repression, and the sublimation of sexual desire. A huge slice of Freud's work is simply plagiarism.

Today Freud barely exists in scientific literature, which has rejected his dodgy claims and outlandish boasts. In his more honest moments, he admitted his work did little to advance the cause of his supposed métier.
"I am actually not at all a man of science, not an observer, not an experimenter, not a thinker," he wrote Fliess.

"I am by temperament nothing but a conquistador - an adventurer, if you want it translated - with all the curiosity, daring and tenacity characteristic of a man of this sort."

If Sigmund Freud had a genius for anything, it was for chutzpah. That, and public relations.

    That's the guy Tavistock hired...

The Sigmund Freud memorial in Hampstead, North London, by Oscar Nemon. The statue is located near to where Sigmund and Anna Freud lived, now the Freud Museum. The building behind the statue is the Tavistock Clinic, a major psychological health care institution.
    [...]

The basis of the project of the Tavistock Institute was explained by Round Tabler, Lord Bertrand Russell, is considered one of the founders of analytic philosophy along with his predecessor Gottlob Frege and his protégé Ludwig Wittgenstein, and is widely held to be one of the twentieth century's premier logicians. Russell offered a revealing glimpse into Frankfurt School’s mass social engineering efforts, in his 1951 book, The Impact of Science on Society:
I think the subject which will be of most importance politically is mass psychology... Its importance has been enormously increased by the growth of modern methods of propaganda. Of these the most influential is what is called "education." Religion plays a part, though a diminishing one; the press, the cinema, and the radio play an increasing part.... It may be hoped that in time anybody will be able to persuade anybody of anything if he can catch the patient young and is provided by the State with money and equipment.

…Although this science will be diligently studied, it will be rigidly confined to the governing class. The populace will not be allowed to know how its convictions were generated. When the technique has been perfected, every government that has been in charge of education for a generation will be able to control its subjects securely without the need of armies or policemen.[2]
A successor organization, the Tavistock Institute of Human Relations, was then founded in 1946 under a grant from the Rockefeller Foundation when it separated from the Tavistock Clinic. According to John Coleman, a former British Intelligence agent, it was Tavistock-designed methods that got the US into World War II and which, under the guidance of Dr. Kurt Lewin, established the OSS. Tavistock became known as the focal point in Britain for psychoanalysis and the psychodynamic theories of Sigmund Freud and his followers.
    [...]

    And, from here (<---):
    [...]
According to some reputable researchers, Sigmund Freud was Tavistock's first director, followed by his daughter, who apparently still runs the facility. It was used to program the postwar leaders of Germany's government, churches, schools, corporations, etc., from among the POWs who were easy to manipulate.

There's a huge difference between psychiatry and psychology; psychologists (if I've understood it correctly) are not liscened to prescribe pharmaceuticals; psychiatrists are; it's their duty (thanks Big Pharma!)-

everyone (like 3) whom I've ever known who were in psychiatric treatment and therefore were prescribed psychotropic drugs (specialty of psychiatrists) deteriorated rapidly and they never were same again- they never improved- just continually deteriorated-

everyone I knew (like 2) who chose help from a psychologist improved very rapidly-

anyone who choses help from a psychiatrist as opposed to a psychologist is already 'insane' due to complete ignorance of how their repressive/bewildering condition may be solved without any side affects of pharmaceuticals (and paying less money)-

    be well all-

If I may, Edward L. Bernays, author of the book Propaganda (circa 1928) and founder of the Council on Public Relations, was Freud's nephew. Bernays is a very interesting study on the use of mind control from the commercial marketing standpoint. Madison Avenue stuff. But these techniques were later carried forward into military and other applications.

I guess it doesn't really matter if Bernays was "Fraud"s nephew or son-in-law- both were incredibly evil people whose malevolent agendas continue to this day-

And don't get me started on Freud's rascal grandson Clement Freud.

For me it was Fritz Perls who had the courage and tenacity to blow away the Freudian crap, eliminating at a stroke the months/years/decades of lying on a couch (while facing away from the therapist) for no discernible benefit.

As Perls put it, the goal of therapy is to "change paper people into real people"

Certainly disconcerting if true. Jung's theories about dreams, the mind and the collective unconscious were and are extremely valuable. I don't know what to think about him based on that article, but I always thought that Jung never got the recognition which he deserved, instead Freud did. He forgot the spiritual component from psychology, instead he just focused on sexuality. Even if Jung was a faulty human being who made some terrible choices, it shouldn't discredit the very important work.

I would agree, Wind. Because there will always be, this:

Quote I can still recall vividly how Freud said to me, “My dear Jung, promise me never to abandon the sexual theory. That is the most essential thing of all. You see, we must make a dogma of it, an unshakable bulwark” … In some astonishment I asked him, “A bulwark-against what?” To which he replied, “Against the black tide of mud”—and here he hesitated for a moment, then added—“of occultism.” ~ Karl Gustav Jung

That is such a good point.

At least with the Freudian analysts, the worst that happens is the patient "improves" (ie stays the same) while making the analyst progressively richer.

the excellent film by Adam Curtis comes to mind immediately browsing this thread, the link between freuds ideas and the implementation by Edward L. Bernays is shown well.. I havent watched this in years but I remember bernays got woman to take up smoking to make them feel empowerd.. and really.. to double the market for cigarettes..

Freud not only had a cocaine problem. He also smoked several cigars a day, leading to a serious head cancer problem that required him to change a jaw prosthesis. So much for the unconscious

I know of at least two people who went to a psychiatrist and didnt take drugs. One of the patients refused drugs and the other doctor just wanted to use talk therapy. My uncle was a psychiatrist who was blackballed for determining that half the schizophrenic patients he had were cured via talk therapy around phobias. So not all psychiatrists are pill pushers, though perhaps most are.

When I was enrolled in psych 101 in university, the prof acknowledged that most/all of Freud's theory had been disproved (this is 40 years ago) but that the scientific community acknowledged freud as the founder of the science of psychology. So despite his tremendous faults, some of his work benefited mankind, if only as an unintended consequence.

Sigmund Freud. He was the child of his time with all its restrictions: Habsburg monarchy, pre-WW1, pre WW2, Jewish-bourgeois, androcentric, prudish. He was born into a moralistic and puritanical society, at the same time full of hypocrisy, black pedagogy still in full swing. I think you cannot judge him without taking his social/cultural background into consideration.

He was a pioneer. Maybe he got a lot of things wrong, he gave in to the social pressure and lost his way, but with his work he opened a can of worms - that‘s what pioneers do - to verify/falsify, refine and develop his theories, to sort things out was the task of his students/successors - and they did a great job, thinking of Jung and Reich. Before Freud there was only materialism and magic/occultism on the other side. Sure, most concepts like Oedipus complex, penis envy and most of all the theory of death drive (death instinct) can be discarded easily, meanwhile. Freud failed in many respects, but he was no fraud. He was genuine, but trapped inside his own and his social environment‘s errors and limitations.

The sinister machinations of an Edward Bernays or later a Clement Freud was not his responsibility, neither the fact that after his death he has been turned into just another idol, for a while and had to disappoint, of course. He was an extremely unhappy and desperate man - very well aware of his own failure. He suffered from a massive, intraoral cancer for his last 16 years (subjected to 30 operative procedures) and had to flee the country when the Nazis took over in 1938. Look at his expression: depression and resignation. He was no hero. He was celebrated, put on a throne as well as opposed and condemned vigorously. Doesn‘t that tell more about the irrational attitude of his disciples and opponents than about him?

You see, I‘m a bit passionate about Freud. Maybe because I come from the same country/city as he did and have delved deep into its ambience, its history. Seldom I‘ve regretted more not having mastered the English language more eloquently, so I hope I‘m not misunderstood too badly. In that case - never mind. Merry Christmas to all of you.

I mean look at his face. Is that the face of someone you would trust with your traumas and sensitivities? To me he looks like a very cruel, obdurate and egotistical person.

That's how I usually understand people I disagree with. Or, in an example like Thomas Jefferson, who was ardent about tyranny, never seemed to question slavery...in a lot of ways, it's like removing one set of blinders at a time.

Compared to how "the insane" were often treated, Dorothea Dix was the real breakthrough pioneer.

Maybe we can also say, "Hey, nervous rich lady, it's your own fault for employing Freud". It's usually pretty uncomfortable to answer ourselves about how we allowed ourself to be swindled, deceived, taken advantage of...

In Freud's admission that he's basically an adventurer, that adventurism probably explains much more human behavior, than people who are devoted to some kind of ethical plan. I'd expect that if most people had the opportunity to get coked up and go around talking to people and writing papers, they would much rather do that, than what they actually do for a living.
