    Default Water Fasting

    Hi, Folks:

I'd like to open the topic of Water Fasting — and I'd love to hear from anyone with significant experience of this.

I've done a few water fasts over the years, the longest being 14 days. That was a little while back, and my interest was re-piqued by this interesting short audio clip from Infowars contributor Dr Edward Group, from a show about 6 weeks ago. Highly recommended for anyone who's curious about this.
Dr Group waxes lyrical about water fasting, and (my paraphrase) states that after a few days stem cells start to grow, and all kinds of healing starts to happen. He describes it as almost literally a process of rejuvenation, and says that no supplements should be taken... just water.

The rainy season is about to kick in in Ecuador, and (sadly! ) that'll ground me from high mountain hiking for a while. So I'm thinking of doing a long water fast — mainly for the interesting experience, and to see what happens.

But I'd like to do it right. Apart from the protocols mentioned by Dr Group in the audio, the only other point I'd like to add from what I believe I know is that it really helps to spend a week or so before the start of the strict fast on a highly alkaline diet (basically, just fruit and veg). As best I understand, that helps to make the detoxing in the first week of the fast much more comfortable.

Advice, input, tips and recommendations, information sources, and first-hand experience are all more than welcome.

i did some of this with intentionally infused water in me " week awake " an undertaking i felt guided into to " clear the channels " was supposed to be a few days of fasting and meditation to observe and correct some of the background sabotage" programs" thought processes i had running in the background just out of me reach , went on a bit over a week , could have just kept going , much of the awareness is lost to me now . way it was presented to me is stuff was shown to me to allow me to accept things to let them go then the awareness was taken to either preserve it or protect me cos just by holding the awareness "they" know it and it would make me a target for "etherial nasties"

years ago i used to literally see living light in varying degrees of clarity , sorta progressed to consciously tapping into universal sources of "higher" energies" and directing it into water or anything i'd put into me body, the concept being the cells of the body gain nourishment from the foods taken in for processing but if i infused a higher form more pure energy , using the food or water as a carrier , then that would also be more available to the cells of the body , i believe each cell contains an energy surrounding it like an aura

    i felt much lighter then

forgot to add , the "week awake" was literally just over a week without sleep after the first 48 hours it was easy

In the Fall of 2016 I did a 40 day and 40 night fast. 20 water and 20 Mastercleanse lemonade, with an additional 4 days of juice fasting leading in and coming out. It was intense and I have not had allergies or hay fever since. I suffered from both prior to that fast. Weight loss was not the point but I lost 46 pounds. Parasite cleansing was the point and I don't think I fasted long enough to get deep enough. I am actually about to embark upon that journey again on January 2nd. A timely post, Bill.

I did an 8 day water only fast March, 2017. My goal was 10 days. I was inspired after I read “The Pleasure Trap,” by Douglas J. Lisle, Ph.D & Alan Goldhamer, D.C. The two chapters that spelled it out were: Chapter 15: “Fasting Can Save your Life” & Chapter 16: “Show Me the Data”.

By day 6 1/2, the detox pain through my back, lower back and thighs was unbearable. So I diluted an Advil in 4 oz. of water and sipped 2 T spoons of the mixture. To dilute further, I washed it down with more water. As it turned out, only two doses were needed over the last couple of days.

My concern was an accident due to lightheadedness and weakness. By day five it became a challenge to safely walk up and down the outside deck stairs from my second floor apartment. I just checked my spread sheet, I lost 12 lbs. and gained 6 lbs. back in two days. I lost 3.3 lbs. of fat. Listening to the audio you provided, it reminded me that I experienced an emotional detox as well.

After the fast was over, I decided I’d not go so long next time. Nine months later, rather than have a specific goal in mind, I’d take it day by day. The fasting exercise reinforced the importance of clean eating. (work in progress especially around the holidays)

Not watched this particular video below yet but Don Tolman is always full of great insights, he’s the researcher that introduced me to fasting as a regular practice. One of Dons insights is that the word ‘fast’ comes from the Latin ‘Fasten’, so like fastening a belt, by fasting you’re adding strength, structure and support to the cells by removing the waste. To make the point that fasting strengthens the body, Don Tolman once did a 40 day water fast, then drank a quart of grapefruit juice and went on a 26 mile marathon.

Water fasting in Ecuador rainy season. That's an evocative picture you paint.

I did water fasting for years. It always seemed to help somewhat. In the past year I got into dry fasting, which I think is a lot easier. I think the advice to "sip water throughout the day to flush out the toxins" is sub-optimal. Dry fasting might seem extreme, but hear me out:

    - If you were set on drinking 3 liters of water in one day, you could do it in strict windows. 1.5 liters in the morning, within one hour, and another drinking water window for 1.5 liters in the evening. So you have 2 hour long windows. That gives you 14 hours in one day where nothing passes your lips. This means the body can heal much faster.

    - Drinking water during a fast can actually make you hungry and tired. It makes the whole business more difficult. I have a lot of respect for Dr Eduard Group, I just differ on this.

    - You're supposed to take bicarbonate of soda while dry fasting to avoid kidney stones.

    - Please don't let your muscles go to waste on an extended fast Bill. You have an impressive set of muscles there, don't lose them. Planks and pushups would ward off muscle wasting.

    - Eating one meal per day in a small eating window gives you a daily fast.

    - I'd still take Iodine, Vit C or Ginger tea on a fast. Im not so strict about taking no supps. Most people are critically low on some nutrients, so going without them in the name of "pure fasting" may slow down the healing process.

I'd imagine the reason why is because whatever that was my body was releasing was gone after that and I never built up sufficient reserves of it again in my body to experience that intensity of release.

I felt it during a 16 day Mastercleanse experience, between day 3-6. The Mastercleanse is less intense than a full water fast. But still very effective.

I found a copy of "Health via Food" by William H. Hay.

It was the book where I expanded my thoughts on the use of mega-vitamins and supplements vs whole, clean foods. (Note: I still use a few supplements such as B12.) I was also surprised how long one can fast and lead a productive life.

I have been doing intermittent fasting for about 5 months now. You should watch out for symptoms of low electrolytes--headache, muscle aches, nausea, heartbeat issues. I drink lots of water with salt added when I fast. And if you still believe that salt is bad for you, I recommend looking into the work of Dr. James DiNicolantonio and Dr. Jason Fung:

    https://idmprogram.com/more-practica...-tips-part-13/

Also, if you can get to the point where your body has adapted to burning fat (as well as glucose) fasting becomes *much* easier. And the way to getting "fat adapted" is to limit your carbohydrate intake to fewer than 50 grams a day for a month or so. For me, the only carbs I get are from veggies, but I have made the switch to a Low-Carb High-Fat diet. Best decision ever for me...

    Default Re: Water Fasting

Although this article is on juice fasting, it’s an informative article.

The Different Juice Fasting Stages of Detoxification

Stage 1 of detoxification (Day 1 To Day 2)

On the first day of fasting, the blood sugar level drops below 70 mg/dl. To restore the blood to the normal glucose level, liver glycogen is converted to glucose and released into the blood. This reserve is enough for half a day. The body then reduces the basal metabolic rate (BMR). The rate of internal chemical activity in resting tissue is lowered to conserve energy. The heart slows and blood pressure is reduced. Glycogen is  pulled from the muscle causing some weakness. The first wave of cleansing is usually the worst.

Headaches, dizziness, nausea, bad breath, glazed eyes and a heavily coated tongue are signs of the first stage of cleansing. Hunger can be the most intense in this period unless the enema is used which quickly assists the body into the fasting state by ending digestion in the colon.

Stage 2 of detoxification (Day 3 To Day 7)

Fats, composed of transformed fatty acids, are broken down to release glycerol from the gliceride molecules and are converted to glucose. The skin may become oily as rancid oils are purged from the body. People with problem-free skin may have a few days of pimples or even a boil. A pallid complexion is also a sign of waste in the blood. Ketones are formed by the incomplete oxidation of fats. It is suspected that the ketones in the blood suppress the appetite by affecting the food-satiety center in the hypothalamus. You may feel hungry for the first few days of the fast. This effect is temporary. The desire to eat will disappear. Lack of hunger may last 40 to 60 days, depending on whether you are on water or juice.

The body embraces the fast and the digestive system is able to take a much-needed rest, focusing all of its energies on cleansing and healing. White blood cell and immune system activity increases. You may feel pain in your lungs. The cleansing organs and the lungs are in the process of being repaired. Periodically, the lymphatic system expels mucoid matter through the nose or throat. The volume excreted of this yellow-colored mucus can be shocking. The sinuses go through periods of being clogged, then will totally clear. The breath is still foul and the tongue coated. Within the intestine, the colon is being repaired and impacted feces on the intestinal wall start to loosen.

    Stage 3 (Day 8 to Day 15)

On the latter part of an extended fast, you can experience enhanced energy, clear-mindedness and feel better than you have felt since childhood. On the downside, old injuries may become irritated and painful. This is a result of the body's increased ability to heal during fasting. If you had broken your arm 10 years before, there is scar tissue around the break. At the time of the break, the body's ability to heal was directly related to lifestyle. If you lived on a junk-food diet, the body's natural healing ability was compromised.

During fasting, the body's healing process is at optimum efficiency. As the body scours for dead or damaged tissue, the lymphocytes enter the older, damaged tissue secreting substances to dissolve the damaged cells. These substances irritate the nerves in the surrounding region and cause a reoccurrence of aches from previously injured areas that may have disappeared years earlier. The pain is good as the body is completing the healing process. The muscles may become tight and sore due to toxin irritation. The legs can be the worst affected, as toxins accumulate in the legs. Cankers are common in this stage due to the excessive bacteria in the mouth. Daily gargling with salt and water will prevent or heal cankers.

Stage 4 of detoxification (Day 16 to Day 30)

The body is completely adapted to the fasting process. There is more energy and clarity of mind. Cleansing periods can be short with many days of feeling good in between. There are days when the tongue is pink and the breath is fresh. The healing work of the organs is being completed. After the detoxification mechanisms have removed the causative agent or render it harmless, the body works at maximum capacity in tissue proliferation to replace damaged tissue. While a short fast will reduce the symptoms, a longer fast can completely heal. Homeostatic balance is at optimum levels. The lymphatic system is clean except for a rare discharge of mucus through the nose or throat. After day 20, the mind is affected. Heightened clarity and emotional balance are felt at this time. Memory and concentration improve.

Stage 5 of detoxification (Breaking the Fast)

The sticky, toxic, mucoid coating on the intestinal wall is loose, and the first meal frees it from the intestinal wall. Toxins enter the blood through the colon. The gallbladder dumps its waste in a heavy discharge of bile. This can cause an instant bowel movement upon eating followed by intense diarrhea. If the symptoms are too uncomfortable, an enema will help.

    Default Re: Water Fasting

    Common Physical Reactions To Fasting
"Most of these reactions are not symptoms of fasting but years of neglect, facing years of unhealthy eating manifested by pounds of unnecessary fat and toxins."

Fasting is like cleaning out a filthy garage, twenty, thirty, maybe fifty years of harmful food latent in every cell.

Sometimes things must get worse before they get better. This has never been truer than with fasting. Fasting stirs up toxins on a cellular and spiritual level, resulting in days of discomfort. They surface in the forms of bad breath, cankers, nausea, feelings of sadness, remorse, even depression. All this can convince the faint of heart, fasting is bad.

    Hunger

Most are surprised by the disappearance of hunger once the border is crossed into fastingʼs land of silence. After a day or two, hungerʼs voice will be rare indeed. Craving can continue on for some days longer, and then at last there will be stillness, leaving the deep groans of the soul. Once the body quiets, the richer connection with our spiritual hunger can be felt. There is nothing like it! Wonderful freedom comes when flesh is forced into silence, sharpening perception of the greatest sound of all; Godʼs still small voice.

The odd time hunger can flare up, more often in a juice fast than water. This could be due to excessive pulp in the juice, reawakening digestion. If hunger persists, try straining your juice or adding some prune juice to clean out the digestive tract.

    Weakness

Water fasting will result in weakness and lack of energy. There can even be dips in stamina during a juice fast if you have a high metabolism. Weakness is a vital part of fastingʼs slowing down process. Embrace this wonderful quieting state; your expectations should be adjusted when planning a fast. Give yourself lots of down time; enjoy the holiday away from the hustle and bustle.

    Backaches

Back pain can increase due to toxins in the lower intestine. Blood vessels that draw nutrients from the colon are very close to the nerves of the spine. Back pain will often decrease after elimination of the toxins. Back exercises can also relieve some pain. A cold pack also will help. Using the enema kit will be the best remedy.

    Bad Breath

Waste passes through the lungs, which are an eliminative organ. Brushing the tongue with a toothbrush using dental floss and rinsing with mouthwash will reduce bad breath.

    Cankers

Toxic build-up in the mouth and the absence of the washing-action of chewing food can allow an increase of bacteria between the teeth. The tongue becomes coated with waste. To stop cankers, gargle with sea salt mixed with water several times daily. Dabbing the sore with tea tree oil or vitamin E quickens the healing process.

    Cold Virus

Mucoid is the perfect food for viruses. Toxins weaken the immune system. When large quantities of toxins and mucus are in the blood due to a fast, they can cause susceptibility to colds. To fight a cold, continue fasting to eliminate mucus. Increase intake of citrus juices.

    Blackouts

During fasting the body conserves energy. The heart pumps slower and blood pressure lowers. Standing or moving quickly from a resting position will cause the blood to flow to the legs, causing blackouts and dizziness. To stop blackouts get down on one knee or sit. Lowering your center of gravity will instantly stop a blackout. Blackouts are more frequent during water fasting.

    Diarrhea

Fruit juices have a laxative effect which is more pronounced after water fasting. The enema kit or using phylum husk during diarrhea helps regulate diarrhea.

    Headaches

Toxins can cause muscle tightness in the neck and shoulders. This can result in tension headaches. Massaging the neck and shoulders will help relieve the tension. The herb Fever Few, which is available in health food stores, is well worth trying.

    Muscle Tightness

The muscles may become tight and sore due to toxin irritation. The legs can be affected, as toxins accumulate in the large muscles. A self-massage, hot baths, stretching and exercising will help to release the toxins.

    Nausea

When waste is released too quickly by the lymph glands some of the toxic overload is taken by the liver and secreted with bile into the stomach. This causes nausea. Drinking water or carrot juice will dilute the bile and toxin mixture, helping to flush it from the system.

    Nervousness

The elimination of toxins can irritate damaged nerves. Light exercise will relieve tension. Use quarter slices of avocado to slow the fast.

    Skin Disturbances

People with problem-free skin may have a few days of pimples or boils. A pallid complexion is also a sign of waste in the blood. When cleansed of mucus and toxins the skin will be healthy, soft and unblemished.

    Tiredness

Sleepiness is normal during water or restricted juice fasting. Very few people receive enough rest, so enjoy the extra sleep; it may be as healing and rejuvenating as the fast itself.

every cell in our body contains 70%+ water-

water is the most essential thing in our lives; people can live a lot longer without food than without water-

high blood pressure is caused not by increased salt intake (as western doctors tell us thanks to their 'edumacation') but by dehydration (a Thai doctor told me this)-

    I used to have slightly high blood pressure but since I started to drink more water my blood pressure has stabilzed back to normal levels;

and we should decrease our water intake?- water flushes out toxins in our body among many other things- duuh-uh!

I will be the last person who will do a water fasting-

You have an innocent misunderstanding: it's all the other way round. A water fast means you ONLY consume water, and nothing else.

Thanks, Bill for the topic and everyone sharing experiences. It's timely for me as my work has slowed down and today is my b.day, a good time to focus on what I've been able to take time to gradually implement. I also appreciate the intention made in this thread about emotional detox and clarity being the signs of fasting from so much external stimuli.

I have fasted, water only/juice and water, etc,, before and restrict my intake, never going full when eating, as it seems uncomfortable to be full. I also eat very slowly. The one thing I have always done is appreciate the power of drinking water alone, having had spent years running long distances with just a water bottle and a bag to gather fruit along the way. I enjoy water in it's complex simplicity and what it does for me.

I especially appreciate Don Tolman's info. This forum has quite a library of info to discern and implement.

I now understand why the need for a regular amount of detoxing is necessary, many noting that some toxins stay in the fatty tissues for many years, not only from outer fat but from interstitial and brain fats. Thinking that my lack of recent exposure to constant toxins in my work meant that the toxins were gone is incorrect, along with the idea that even living a very clean lifestyle totally prevents any such accumulation of toxins, which in today's environments is not true.

I will be able to detect long held, deep tissue toxins by the many avenues of elimination. It may be also that in film we are exposed at short intervals to some intense toxins that, depending on the stress we are under and our previous histories of exposure, may induce some unhealthy outcomes.

I say this because many of us who have worked around toxins in various industries, as I have in the building trades, tend to dismiss the further short term exposures later on as innocuous when they are not. Something to consider if it even has been many years since our last exposure to those specific toxins.

Soooooo cute!😂. It shows how the written word can sometimes be confusing.

In French, this grammatical structure (water fasting) would have been in line with Cadillac thinking.

I did my first water fast in my late 20's (many years ago) and because I was so naive I quit with a major healing crisis after only 6 days. I have done many fasts since. Last Feb.-March I did a juice fast for 6 weeks...had some major dental work done and was not able to eat for a while so was a good excuse to fast. Every January 2nd I do a Master Cleanse Fast for up to 14 days. Of all the different types of fasts I have undertaken over the years I have found the Master Cleanse to be the easiest for me because I happen to have a beautiful lemon tree in my front yard and one of the ingredients in the fast is cayenne pepper which alleviates much of the pains associated with fasting.

I have found, in my many years of fasting periods, that I get more in-tuned to my body, mind and spirit. Fasting is a good thing for anyone to try for whatever reason.
After my January fast I may consider a water fast again...this time with a little more understanding of what the body goes through while "taking out the trash".

Bill I wish you all the best with your water fast.

    Darlene

When I need to do some writing or something that requires mental agility, I will usually drink only water for the duration. I feel very lucid and clear when I do so. But after a while I will feel weak and lethargic. So intermittent fasting has been good to me.

My first thought when I hear about longer water fasting is "why not a veggie juice fast instead?" ..or.. "why not a bone broth fast instead?" Seems safer to me. More nutritious. And the digestive system will still have very little work to do. But I digress...

I'm about a quarter of the way thru this. Pretty informative stuff on water fasting:

From The Australian Spinal Research Foundation - Fasting can trigger stem cell, immune regeneration (April, 2017)

Good news for people who prefer shorter, regular water fasts - A Periodic Diet that Mimics Fasting Promotes Multi- System Regeneration, Enhanced Cognitive Performance, and Healthspan (clinical report, PDF)

The longest water fast I've done is 30 days. Nothing new to add to the previous posts other than the coolest part which was when I woke up on day 14 delighted due to an unexpected effect. I could feel all the chi that enlivens my body flowing forth from nowhere within my body, and I could vividly feel and observe it appearing, flowing and enlivening me. Words don't do it justice, best to experience for one's self.
Never give up on your silly, silly dreams.

You mustn't be afraid to dream a little BIGGER, darling.
