Artists are the best equipped among us to reveal those things which otherwise we’d be happy to keep repressed forever.

It is incredibly dark, but this short animated film looks at the shadow side of modern culture. Written, directed, and produced by Lubomir Arsov, In Shadow is a must see journey through the bruised and twisted psyche of the West.

Reminiscent of The Wall by Pink Floyd, it’s impossible to watch this and not wonder about the darkness and evil that lurks in the recesses of your own mind. Everyone has a dark side, and when this side is ignored and left alone, it gathers control over our lives.

Shadow work is the spiritual endeavor of getting to know and understand your dark side, and of intentionally gazing as deeply into that abyss as possible. For spiritually healthy beings, this type of personal development is imperative, and often, artistic expression is the best way to truly connect with your shadow. By doing so, we allow the shadow to express itself, allowing it into the light, which is a process that creates balance and harmony in one’s life, and prevents the subconscious mind from running rampant with inexplicable self-destructive habits.

Visionary artist Chris Dyer understands this and has used his medium of painting to allow his shadow to take form. In a recent work entitled ‘Shadowwork‘, Dyer he captures the feeling and meaning of doing the work, with the end result being the emergence of a much happier, healthier and easier disposition. He speaks of the importance of identifying, then externalizing your shadow so that you can free yourself of the control it has over you.

A painting of his, which he posted on his facebook page, is an expression of the shadow he sees within himself.

The film In Shadow is rather ugly, as it directly confronts the most unsettling aspects of the collective psyche. From the institutions that rape the earth and wage endless wars, to the masks that people don in order to function in a world of severe disconnection, to pornography and sexual abuse, to celebrity culture and bull**** mainstream media. The dark side of our confused world is expressed in this film.
