The 'hot' line was going between Trump and Putin , it was only about chemicals
Boris denies all Russian counter theories that both Douma and Salisbury were set
up as would be expected by any cabinet member let alone the foreign secretary.
The object is not to intervene in the Syrian civil war and only Russia can influence
Assad. He's emphatic the Kremlin has its hands all over the Skripal case as you
would expect and a bit about Brexit . Both Trump and Boris were born in New York
and although they are opposites they do remind me of each other especially when
he was asked about Brexit and everything is going to be great and rosy...

Syria air strikes: Action showed enough is enough - Boris Johnson

    15/4/18

Primary purpose of Syria air strikes was "to say no to the use of barbaric weapons",
says Boris Johnson Air strikes in Syria were about saying "enough is enough" over
the use of chemical weapons, Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson has said.

Mr Johnson said the action by the US, UK and France would not "turn the tide" of
the conflict and was not about regime change. But he said he hoped it would act as
a deterrent to more "barbaric" chemical attacks.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has questioned the legality of the action. He called for
new legislation to ensure MPs get a vote before future military action is taken, and
said he would only back intervention in Syria if the United Nations backed it.
Conservatives said this would never happen due to Russia using its veto at the UN.

    • April 14 2018 US/UK/French attack on Syria begins.

I have always denied the UK's claim that only Russia had a motive to attack the Skripals. To denigrate Russia internationally by a false flag attack pinning the blame on Russia, always seemed to me more likely than for the Russians to do that to themselves. And from the start I pointed to the conflict in Syria as a likely motive. That puts Saudi Arabia (and its client jihadists), Saudi Arabia's close ally Israel, the UK and the USA all in the frame in having a powerful motive in inculcating anti-Russian sentiment prior to planned conflict with Russia in Syria. Any of them could have attacked the Skripals.

Today, Theresa May is claiming -astonishingly - that the UK attack on Syria is "to deter chemical weapons attacks in Syria and the UK". I don't think the motive for a Skripal false flag could be more starkly demonstrated.

We do not yet know how many children and other civilians have died so far in what the media always pretend are magically "pinpoint" attacks on Syria. Denying the "collateral damage" is part of the neo-con playbook. The danger is that they will not stop but continue to push, testing how far they can go in weakening Syrian government forces to promote their jihadist allies on the ground, before they spark a real Russian reaction. That way madness lies.

It is also worth noting that the most ardent supporters of this military action, outside Saudi Arabia and Israel, are the Blairites in the UK and the Clinton Democrats in the USA. The self-described "centrists" are actually the unhinged extremists in today's politics.

This attack on Syria is, beyond doubt, a huge success for the machinations of Mohammed Bin Salman. Please do read my post of 8 March which sets out the background to his agenda, and I believe is essential to why we find our nations in military action again today. Despite the fact the vast majority of the people do not want this.
SOTT Comment: It is the usual suspects, though for some reason Saudi Arabia and the UK seem to be playing more prominent roles than usual in the latest episode of this drama. It is interesting also that Russian Major General Igor Konashenkov stated right before the attacks:
Earlier, Russia had made numerous warns on all levels about provocations of chemical weapons use organized by insurgents in the Eastern Ghouta. Today, there are other evidences at the disposal of the Russian military department, which testify to the direct participation of Great Britain in organizing this provocation in the Eastern Ghouta.

WikiLeaks reveals Saudi wishful thinking: "Overthrow the Syrian regime, but play nice with Russia"

    © WikiLeaks

Secret Saudi cable produced by WikiLeaks: Saudi Arabia "must seek by all means available and all possible ways to overthrow the current regime in Syria" even should the United States at any point show "lack of desire."

Hours after the overnight US-led missile strikes on Syria, WikiLeaks republished a crucially important diplomatic cable through its official media accounts confirming that Saudi Arabia's long term strategy in Syria has been to pursue regime change "by all means available."According to the leaked internal Saudi government document, this is the kingdom's proposed end-goal even should the United States at any point show "lack of desire" due to the threat of Russian response and possibility of a 'great power' confrontation.

With American lawmakers and media pundits already urging President Trump to escalate and sustain attacks against Syria, it must be remembered that close US allies like Israel and Saudi Arabia have long coordinated to create the conditions that might tip the US administration toward full military action resulting in regime change in Damascus. And more recently, fresh off his weeks-long tour of the US, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has both slammed previous proposals of US troop withdrawal in Syria and declared eagerness "to work with allies on any military response in Syria if needed."

It is also essential to recall that the al-Qaeda linked group which originated the claims of a government orchestrated chemical attack on civilians in the Damascus suburb of Douma, called Jaish al Islam (JAI), is and has always been state sponsored by the Saudi regime. The Guardian, among others, reported beginning in 2013 that Saudi Arabia founded and trained the group, spending millions.

Notably, as Russia as well as some Western counter-terror experts continue to point the finger at Jaish al Islam (and the "White Helmets") for staging the Douma "chemical attack" in order to provoke the US military response, it has emerged through past reporting that JAI itself had used chemical weapons against Kurdish militias in Aleppo's Sheikh Maqsoud district in 2016 (and it appears that the Saudi-backed group openly admitted to carrying out prior chemical attacks according to The Daily Beast).

Given this current context and the continued rapid unfolding of the crisis, the previously leaked 'secret' Saudi memo published by WikiLeaks takes on new significance and meaning: did the Saudis finally trigger their "by any means available" scenario (a 'chemical incident') at a moment when their proxies were collapsing in the face of overwhelming Syrian Army victory?

The below article and translation was originally authored by Brad Hoff in 2016 for WikiLeaks and Foreign Policy Journal, and is used here with permission.

Secret Intel Memo: Overthrow the Regime "by all means available"
A WikiLeaks cable released as part of "The Saudi Cables" in the summer of 2015, now fully translated here for the first time, reveals what the Saudis feared most in the early years of the war: Russian military intervention and Syrian retaliation. These fears were such that the kingdom directed its media "not to oppose Russian figures and to avoid insulting them" at the time.

    https://twitter.com/wikileaks/status/985171468525940737

Saudi Arabia had further miscalculated that the "Russian position" of preserving the Assad government "will not persist in force." In Saudi thinking, reflected in the leaked memo, Assad's violent ouster ("by all means available") could be pursued so long as Russia stayed on the sidelines.

The following section of the leaked cable is categorical in its emphasis on regime change at all cost, even should the U.S. vacillate for "lack of desire":
"The fact must be stressed that in the case where the Syrian regime is able to pass through its current crisis in any shape or form, the primary goal that it will pursue is taking revenge on the countries that stood against it, with the Kingdom and some of the countries of the Gulf coming at the top of the list. If we take into account the extent of this regime's brutality and viciousness and its lack of hesitancy to resort to any means to realize its aims, then the situation will reach a high degree of danger for the Kingdom, which must seek by all means available and all possible ways to overthrow the current regime in Syria. As regards the international position, it is clear that there is a lack of 'desire' and not a lack of 'capability' on the part of Western countries, chief among them the United States, to take firm steps..."
Amman-based Albawaba News-one of the largest online news providers in the Middle East-was the first to call attention to the WikiLeaks memo, which "reveals Saudi officials saying President Bashar al-Assad must be taken down before he exacts revenge on Saudi Arabia." Albawaba offered a brief partial translation of the cable, which though undated, was likely produced in early 2012 (based on my best speculation using event references in the text; Russia began proposing informal Syrian peace talks in January 2012).

    Russian Hardware, a Saudi Nightmare

Over the past weeks Saudi Arabia has ratcheted up its rhetoric on Syria, threatening direct military escalation and the insertion of special forces on the ground, ostensibly for humanitarian and stabilizing purposes as a willing partner in the "war on terror." As many pundits are now observing, in reality the kingdom's saber rattling stems not from confidence, but utter desperation as its proxy anti-Assad fighters face defeat by overwhelming Russian air power and Syrian ground forces, and as the Saudi military itself is increasingly bogged down in Yemen.

Even as the Saudi regime dresses its bellicose rhetoric in humanitarian terms, it ultimately desires to protect the flow of foreign fighters into Northern Syria, which is its still hoped-for "available means" of toppling the Syrian government (or at least, at this point, permanent sectarian partition of Syria).

    U.S. State Department Confirmation
The U.S. State Department's own 2014 Country Report on Terrorism confirms that the rate of foreign terrorist entry into Syria over the past few years is unprecedented among any conflict in history:
"The rate of foreign terrorist fighter travel to Syria-totaling more than 16,000 foreign terrorist fighters from more than 90 countries as of late December-exceeded the rate of foreign terrorist fighters who traveled to Afghanistan and Pakistan, Iraq, Yemen, or Somalia at any point in the last 20 years."
According to Cinan Siddi, Director of the Institute for Turkish Studies at Georgetown's prestigious School of Foreign Service, Russian military presence in Syria was born of genuine geopolitical interests. In a public lecture recently given at Baylor University, Siddi said that Russia is fundamentally trying to disrupt the "jihadi corridor" facilitated by Turkey and its allies in Northern Syria.

The below leaked document gives us a glimpse into Saudi motives and fears long before Russian hardware entered the equation, and the degree to which the kingdom utterly failed in assessing Russian red lines.

Note: the cable as published in the SaudiLeaks trove appears to be incomplete. Its accompanying pages have yet to be located within the massive trove of leaked Arabic documents.

[...] shared interest, and believes that the current Russian position only represents a movement to put pressure on him, its goals being evident, and that this position will not persist in force, given Russia's ties to interests with Western countries and the countries of the Gulf.

If it pleases Your Highness, I support the idea of entering into a profound dialogue with Russia regarding its position towards Syria*, holding the Second Strategic Conference in Moscow, working to focus the discussion during it on the issue of Syria, and exerting whatever pressure is possible to dissuade it from its current position. I likewise see an opportunity to invite the head of the Committee for International Relations in the Duma to visit the Kingdom. Since it is better to remain in communication with Russia and to direct the media not to oppose Russian figures and to avoid insulting them, so that no harm may come to the interests of the Kingdom, it is possible that the new Russian president will change Russian policy toward Arab countries for the better. However, our position currently in practice, which is to criticize Russian policy toward Syria and its positions that are contrary to our declared principles, remains. It is also advantageous to increase pressure on the Russians by encouraging the Organization of Islamic States to exert some form of pressure by strongly brandishing Islamic public opinion, since Russia fears the Islamic dimension more than the Arab dimension.

In what pertains to the Syrian crisis, the Kingdom is resolute in its position and there is no longer any room to back down. The fact must be stressed that in the case where the Syrian regime is able to pass through its current crisis in any shape or form, the primary goal that it will pursue is taking revenge on the countries that stood against it, with the Kingdom and some of the countries of the Gulf coming at the top of the list. If we take into account the extent of this regime's brutality and viciousness and its lack of hesitancy to resort to any means to realize its aims, then the situation will reach a high degree of danger for the Kingdom, which must seek by all means available and all possible ways to overthrow the current regime in Syria.

How London and the White Helmets Staged the Douma "Chemical Attack"

    Harrison Koehli Sott.net
    Fri, 13 Apr 2018 23:27 UTC

Last year when the U.S. military launched a cruise missile attack on a Syrian airbase after allegations of a chemical weapons attack at Khan Sheikhoun, many commentators grasped the obvious implication: in the future, whenever so-called moderate rebel terrorists were being routed by the Syrian and Russian militaries, all that the terrorists would have to do is stage another "chemical weapons" attack and broadcast it via their White Helmets propaganda network. This would essentially act as a call for American air support.

U.S. government spokespeople even said that any future chemical weapons attacks would be automatically blamed on Syria and Russia. In the real world, that's called a blank check. Since any apparent chemical weapons attack will automatically be blamed on Syria and Russia, and will be responded to with a cruise-missile attack on Syrian military positions, Syria's enemies have a major incentive to give the appearance that civilians have suffered from a chemical weapons attack. It's not rocket science.

The Russian Ministry of Defense warned about precisely this scenario on March 13, less than a month before the Douma event. Two sets of videos were released after the alleged attack in Douma: the apparent discovery of many bodies in a home, allegedly killed by a chemical weapons attack; and a video of civilians and children being doused with water in a medical facility, allegedly after having come into contact with said chemical. The sources for the claims were the White Helmets and the Syrian American Medical Society (both of which have close ties to the jihadists, including al-Qaeda, in Syria), who claimed that 500 people had been exposed.

As for the first videos showing the dead bodies, there is no evidence they died from a chemical weapons attack. In fact, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (itself an "organization" known for atrocity stories designed to paint the Syrian and Russian militaries in a bad light) reported that "it could not confirm whether chemical weapons had been used". Instead, they provided this account:
...reliable sources confirmed to the Syrian Observatory that some of the casualties and injured people had been subjected to suffocation due to the demolition of basements of houses as a result of the heavy and intense shelling of Douma city, and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights published hours ago that 11 people at least including 5 children had suffocated, after bombardment by a warplane on an area near the old cemetery at the northern outskirts of Douma city in the Eastern Ghouta.
This appears to have been the site filmed by the White Helmets. As for the other video, today the Russian Ministry of Defense provided a credible account of its provenance, as well as an overall account of events that makes sense of all the data and contradictions so far. Major General Igor Konashenkov stated:
The Russian Ministry of Defence has overwhelming evidence that in Douma on April 7 there was a planned provocation in order to deceive the world community. Its original purpose was to provoke missile strikes by the USA against Syria. It is to be reminded that a video clip recorded at the Douma hospital where injured people were allegedly brought to is the key 'evidence' of all these accusations made by western countries. However, we managed to find those who directly had taken part in this footage, and to ask them questions. Today, Russian shows an interview with these people.

Citizens of Douma told how a staged clip had been recorded, in which episodes they had participated and what roles they had had. Besides, they showed shots with them in the clip. Both persons involved in the clip have medical degree and work in emergency department of the Douma Hospital.

According to them, those who had been brought to the hospital had no injuries caused by chemical agents. When civilians were receiving first aid, some unidentified people rushed in the hospital. Some of them had video cameras. These people started shouting, spreading panic, and dousing other people with water. They shouted that all people in the hospital were victims of chemical weapons use. Patients and their relatives started dousing each other with water. After the action was filmed, the unknown persons escaped immediately.

As it can be seen, these Syrians demonstrate themselves at the footage. It is to be noted that these people do not hide their names. These are not some impersonal messages on social networks or statements of anonymous activists. It is to be stressed once again that these are people who became direct participants in filming these footage. These facts are the evidence in the civilized world, and are not unfounded and irresponsible accusations spread with the aim of hanging labels and denigrating the leadership of other countries.

The Russian party knows for certain that from April 3 to 6, representatives of the so-called White Helmets were influenced by London for the speedy implementation of the provocation prepared in advance. The White Helmets received information that Jaysh al-Islam militants were to conduct a series of powerful artillery shelling of Damascus on April 3 to 6. This will promote a response from the government troops, which the White Helmets' representatives will have to use to carry out provocations with alleged chemical weapons.
The relevant section of the briefing starts at around 25:45 of this video and ends at 29:50, showing footage of the interview with the two Syrian medical personnel telling their side of what happened at the hospital.

Here are the Syrian medical workers' accounts:

This makes sense. Before the alleged attack on April 7, the Syrians and Russians had liberated most of Eastern Ghouta. Only Douma remained, occupied by the terrorist group Jaish al-Islam. On April 2, over 1100 militants left Douma under agreement with the Syrian Army. Evacuations followed on April 3 and April 4. During this time, Jaish al-Islam commanders still refused to negotiate their evacuation (leading to several reported executions and at least one defection to the Syrian government). On this same day, Putin held a press conference with Erdogan where he reiterated that Russian intelligence had "irrefutable evidence" that Syrian militants were planning chemical attacks.

More infighting among Jaish al-Islam terrorists broke out on April 5. On April 6, the Russian MOD once again cited sources that militants planned a chemical attack provocation, and after ongoing talks with Jaish al-Islam failed, the Russian air force heavily bombed their positions and the Syrian army began storming Douma to retake it by force and launched their own airstrikes. The JAI terrorists fired artillery shells into residential Damascus in response, wounding at least 16 and killing 1 civilian. Such shelling continued into the morning of the 7th. As fighting continued through the night Jaish al-Islam announced their willingness to resume negotiations (which were successful, leading to the full evacuation of Douma in the days after). On this same day came the White Helmets spurious and cynical allegation of a 'chemical weapon attack'.

So while the events of those days aren't as clear as Konashenkov states - even if the shelling was planned in advance, it was temporally after the offensive to retake Douma had begun - the logic is still clear. If negotiations failed, the offensive on Douma would be resumed. This would be followed (or preceded) by indiscriminate shelling of Damascus, which would be followed by even more airstrikes on Douma. In this context, all the White Helmets had to do was wait for a suitable site of death and destruction, frame it as a chemical attack, and produce "video evidence" to call in U.S. air support.

Again, this is one of the main pieces of evidence of the alleged #Douma chemical attack used by the US, UK, & French liars to justify the destruction of Syria..!

The death by suffocation of several residents (cited above) was used as evidence of a chemical attack and a scene was staged at a local hospital to give the appearance that numerous Syrians had been exposed, when in fact they had not. After that, practically all Western media and most governments followed the script. But so far nothing has come of it. It looks like Russia has solidified its presence in Syria to the extent that the U.S. cannot risk another attack without potentially starting a war with Russia.

The hand of the UK in both the Skripal and Douma provocations is telling. Perhaps there's more to the following story than meets the eye: Syrian army arrests British and other Western forces embedded with terrorist groups in Eastern Ghouta - Local reports

But more telling is that the 'reality creators' powers are failing them. Staged provocations in Syria and elsewhere have worked in the past, but the transparently false nature of the most recent claims, combined with serious Russian push-back, may prove to have been a bridge too far for the faltering and increasingly desperate anglo-American empire.

These two reports, by Michael Trimm and BPEearthwatch, I feel provide some very interesting perspectives about this attack... that it was to take out 'deep state' actors within Syria, and was coordinated with both the Russians and Syrians. I feel BPEarthwatch's observation that the 'deep state' is not solely relegated to the US, but is a long-term, world wide issue, that currently uses the power of the US hegemony as it's primary source of it's control over the world, is extremely valid.

Failed US attack: Assad impressed with 1970’s Soviet weapons

    Fort Russ News
By Joaquin Flores On Apr 15, 2018
translated by J. Flores from Rusvesna

Bashar Assad noted the superiority of Russian weapons over the Western, said member of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, Sergei Zheleznyak.

“Assad spoke very positively about Russian weapons,” the deputy said after talking with a group of Russian parliamentarians with the Syrian president.

At the same time, Zheleznyak said that they did not discuss the supply of Russian air defense systems with the Syrian leader.

Earlier, the Defense Ministry said that Russia could return to consideration of the issue of deliveries of the S-300 SAM to Damascus.

    Meanwhile, Assad criticized American armament.
“Yesterday we saw American aggression, and we repulsed it with rockets of 1970’s release … Since the 1990’s, American films have shown that Russian weapons are backward, and today we see who really lags behind,” the Syrian leader said.
His words were passed by another member of the delegation – the chairman of the patriotic platform of “United Russia” Dmitry Sablin.

On Wednesday, an official delegation of Russian parliamentarians arrived in Syria on an official visit. During the attack on Damascus, none of them suffered.

    Missile strike on Syria
On Saturday night, the United States, Britain and France fired more than 100 missiles at civilian and military sites in Syria, injuring three people. Most of them Syrian air defense managed to bring down.

At the same time, there is no evidence of Damascus using prohibited substances. The attack occurred prior to the OPCW investigation. Experts of the Russian Center for the Reconciliation of Warring Parties (CPAP) last week visited the site of the alleged incident and found no traces of toxins.

In Moscow, the actions of Western countries were called “an impudent violation of international law”.

Default Re: Syria air strikes: US and allies attack [alleged] chemical weapons sites...14/4/18

A view from China, from the editorial of the Global Times, which is a kind of “mouthpiece” for the official Chinese establishment:

Quote Reckless strike on Syria a shameless act

    Source:Global Times
    Published: 2018/4/15 22:23:40

After US, British and French forces launched over 100 missiles at Syria, Washington quickly stated that it was satisfied with the effectiveness of the strike. US President Donald Trump tweeted "Mission Accomplished!" Will there be more military actions on Syria? The US said that will depend on whether Bashar al-Assad's regime will use more chemical weapons in the future.

According to these signals from Washington, most observers believe that this round of strikes against Syria by the US and its allies have come to an end. They have not actually weakened Syrian government forces or hurt Russia's military presence in Syria, but they conveyed a warning that Trump dares to strike.

As for what Trump wants in Syria, many people are confused. Does he really want to stop the Syrian government forces from using chemical weapons? In that case, it's simple, because there is no need at all for the nation's government forces, which already control the situation in Syria's battlefield, to use chemical weapons.

Using chemical weapons would only attract condemnation and attacks from the outside world. Hence, Assad's government has sufficient reason as it claims to keep away from chemical weapons.

Was Trump trying to turn the tables on the Syrian battlefield, where government forces are scoring victories while opposition forces are shrinking? Then 100 missiles are far from enough.

Was Washington attempting to humiliate Russia? Undoubtedly it embarrassed Moscow, but the strike avoided the region where Russian troops are stationed and the US issued a signal to stop the strike immediately afterward. Apparently, Washington restrained itself so as not to push the Kremlin into a corner and escalate the conflict.

Perhaps even Trump and his team have no clue what they want to do in Syria. They may want to showcase the might of the US and the West, send a warning to their potential opponents and boost the unity of the West. Washington may feel that it is no big deal to beat Syria up.

But the US severely underestimated the negative consequences of its reckless military action. It will inevitably stimulate hatred and make many countries and forces believe that the ultimate way to resolve conflicts and disputes can only be the use of force.

It can be foreseen that the military strike on Syria will have a negative impact on the upcoming talks between the two Koreas and the Trump-Kim summit.

One of the major characteristics of the Trump administration's diplomacy is willfulness and recklessness, as if the all-mighty US has the right to do everything.

However, the stronger a country is, the greater the responsibility it has to maintain world peace and order. The military actions of the US and its allies have breached the framework of the United Nations and violated the foundation of modern international relations. If the will of Washington and the West represents the will of all mankind and they can punish whoever they want, why do we need the UN, or international law?

Without UN authorization, the US, UK and France behaved like rogues. No matter how touching the excuses they find for themselves, they cannot change the fact that they were lynching Syria without due evidence.

It is worrying that the US may disturb Syria with yet more missiles from time to time, throwing yet more salt on an open wound of a country.
    From here: http://www.globaltimes.cn/content/1098059.shtml

This seems fairly strongly worded for China; mostly they are more restrained with their statements.

The Saker seems to think the airstrikes were a win for the AngloZionist empire, although I’m inclined to disagree. There were mixed reports coming from the US after the strikes, with one group claiming that no warning was given ahead of time to Russia, yet another group claimed they did give pre-warnings to Russia and Syria. It’s as if the left hand doesn’t realise the right hand is going behind its back and undermining its authority. To me it seems as though fault lines are splitting between deep state factions within the US. There’s an excellent summary of the event in the comments section of Sakers blog post whose analysis I agree with, username veritas semper vincit:

Quote The WW III that never was :
    1.AMERICA
-lost face ; again; America doesn’t even have a face anymore : it replaced it with the mask of death

-103 Tomahawks and only 32 proved to be semi- smart
-America declared victory , and sailed home ; for now
-Mission accomplished for his beautiful , strong army said the president , triggering painful memories

The real freedom fighters , various rebellious national groups taking up arms

born from rebellion and almost divided in a deadly civil war so knows this very well

Russia's foreign minister says the only evidence of a chemical attack came from the

chemical weapons attack that drew Western military retaliation.

tampering was raised by the US envoy to the international chemical weapons

This might be related to further plans for a Syria attack.... It might also have been part of the plans for the just completed attack but something changed?

Quote Thousands of US troops and Marines arrive in Jordan
By: Shawn Snow   2 days ago

As tensions come to a boil in Syria over an alleged chemical attack, thousands of U.S. troops and Marines will be gathering in neighboring Jordan for the start of a major training exercise.

Nearly 3,600 U.S. troops, including Marines with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit, or MEU, will be in place Sunday for the start of a nearly two-week training exercise known as Eager Lion, military officials confirmed to Marine Corps Times.

It will be a rare display of allied firepower, which couldn’t come at a more tense time as U.S. Navy warships are steadily building a presence in the Mediterranean in preparation for what analysts presume will be a tomahawk cruise missile strike on Syria.

President Donald Trump has sent mixed messages about his plans for an attack on Syria, which the Pentagon is considering after Syrian President Bashar al-Assad allegedly used chemical weapons to attack the city of Douma.

Last year, Eager Lion was launched from the Zarqa Jordanian military base, located near the Syrian border and roughly 100 miles from the Syrian capital of Damascus.

The exercise has routinely been viewed as a pretext for an invasion of Syria by analysts and countries aligned with the Syrian regime.

And Dr Farrell is not convinced either....

Quote SECDEF MATTIS: WHERE’S THE PROOF?
    Joseph P. FarrellApril 16, 2018

I'm old enough to remember the Cuban missile crisis. For those few days in 1962, the family dinner table was tense and the air - the attitude - in the country was surreal. People lived and went to work, as before, but hanging over every waking moment was the full conscious realization, of every second of every day during the crisis, of the possibility that civilization could go up in mushroom clouds of radioactivity. Years later, as the full story of the Cuban missile crisis was finally known and told, it became clear that the world had made it through the crisis largely because two men - Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev and American President John F Kennedy - had stood down their countries' respective "war hawks." The real life scenario had come uncomfortably close to Stanley Kubrick's black comedy, Dr. Strangelove.

I remember those days, and the feeling in the air around our dinner tables, the smiling but tense faces as people tried to pretend everything was normal. And I have not experienced that feeling in all the years since, until last week's latest "Syria crisis" and the irresponsible tweets of Mr. Trump about the missiles flying soon. Funny, I seem to have missed that part about Twitter having been designed as a thermonuclear geopolitics platform.

As I pointed out in last Thursday's News and Views from the Nefarium, the problem with the whole Syria narrative was and is the same as that with the whole Skripal narrative: there's little to no proof that Syria's Assad regime used poison gas at all. And lost in the shuffle has been the fact that Russia brokered a deal a few years ago - remember that - whereby Syria would turn over all its chemical weapons in favor of a Western stand-down in that country. Also lost in the shuffle were all those stories from the Obama era that documented the West's, and in particular the USA's, training of the Syrian "rebels" in how to use - here it comes - chemical weapons.

Finally, perhaps, some sanity may be prevailing in Washington, District of Corruption:

    https://www.nytimes.com/2018/04/12/u...ore-ipad-share

The problem, as outlined by this New York Times article, is exactly what I said it was: Lack of proof:
Defense Secretary Jim Mattis sought on Thursday to slow down an imminent strike on Syria, reflecting mounting concerns at the Pentagon that a concerted bombing campaign could escalate into a wider conflict between Russia, Iran and the West.

During a closed-door White House meeting, officials said, Mr. Mattis pushed for more evidence of President Bashar al-Assad’s role in a suspected chemical attack (https://www.nytimes.com/2018/04/11/w...ack-douma.html) last weekend that would assure the world that military action was necessary.
There's an element of make-believe here that also disturbs:
“It’s too bad that the world puts us in a position like that,” he said. “But you know, as I said this morning, we’ve done a great job with ISIS,” Mr. Trump added. “We have just absolutely decimated ISIS. But now we have to make some further decisions. So they’ll be made fairly soon.”
Wait a minute... would that be the same ISIS that America and its allies helped prop up in Syria to use as cats' paws against the Assad regime? The same ISIS that Russia's intervention helped rout and defeat? The same ISIS that western groups and advisors trained in the use of chemical weapons?

Something about this whole story still stinks, and it stinks like the Skripal case: there's no proof, and as I put it last Thursday, the real problem is to explain why Mr. Assad would resort to such an attack at the very moment of his emergent victory. Why resort to an attack that will only re-inflame the West's involvement in his country? Mattis has stated the obvious: there's no proof, and here's the rub: there's not likely to be.

For that is exactly what has happened, and it's for that reason I still think this event is being manipulated to keep the West involved... it has that distinctive Riyadh-Tel Aviv odor to it...

3,600 Marines going to Jordan will not amount to anything. Any attempted Western invasion would have to be much larger than that. Those Marines might be able to bolster a few camps of insurgents.

Same with this missile attack, which was the same as the previous one, a tremendous loss of munitions to 70s era Soviet defenses. It is an opportunity for the aggressor countries to brag themselves into irrelevancy.

Syrian air defenses repel missile strike against Shayrat air base in Homs province – state media

Syrian air defense systems have been activated in response to a missile attack targeting Shayrat Airbase in Homs province, and, according to state media, managed to take down all the incoming projectiles.

Up to 10 missiles were destroyed by the Syrian Armed Forces, a military source told Sputnik. The Syrian air defenses managed to intercept some of the projectiles, according to a SANA reporter. Meanwhile, the Al Mayadeen news outlet is claiming that all the projectiles were intercepted and inflicted no physical damage or casualties at the targeted Syrian base.

The Pentagon has denied initiating strikes or conducting any other military activity in Homs province. “There is no US military activity in that area at this time,” the Pentagon’s spokesperson told Reuters. The same information was also shared with TASS news agency by Pentagon spokesman Eric Pahon.

The raid in Homs countryside reportedly coincided with another missile attack against a military airbase near Damascus. According to various Arabic media channels, three missiles targeted Al Dumayr airport, but they were all allegedly downed by the Syrian air defenses.

According to yet unconfirmed reports, the missiles entered Syrian airspace from Lebanon, which may indicate that the Israeli Air Force could have been involved, Al-Masdar News reports, citing a military source. The outlet’s reporter also published several videos allegedly showing the launch of interceptor missiles.

Israel, which hardly ever acknowledges its raids inside Syria, failed to comment on its alleged involvement. “We don’t comment on such reports,” an Israeli military spokesman told Reuters. The US Department of Defense spokesman, meanwhile, told Sky News Arabia that there are “a lot of players” in the region who could have carried out the Tuesday morning attack in Syria.

While it remains unclear who launched the attack, the reported strike comes just days after Washington, London and Paris carried out a coordinated strike in Syria in the early hours of Saturday morning. It also comes roughly a week after two Israeli F-15 fighters targeted another Syria’s airbase in Homs province, Tiyas (also known as T-4 Airbase).

The team has been in the country since Saturday but has been prohibited
from entering the town of Douma.US officials have raised concerns that
Russia may have tampered with the site while inspectors were denied access.

Syria and its ally Russia deny responsibility for the attack, with Russia

PM’s husband’s Capital Group is largest shareholder in BAE, shares soar since Syrian airstrikes

    RT

Philip May, husband of the UK prime minister, works for a company that is the largest shareholder in arms manufacturer, BAE Systems, whose share price has soared since the recent airstrikes in Syria.

The company, Capital Group, is also the second-largest shareholder in Lockheed Martin – a US military arms firm that supplies weapons systems, aircraft and logistical support. Its shares have also rocketed since the missile strikes last week.

The fact has not gone unnoticed by some on Twitter, who agree that BAE Systems has done very well out of the UK-US-France allied airstrikes on Syria, which were sanctioned by Theresa May. It has been reported that the UK’s contribution to military strikes was to fire eight ‘Storm-Shadow’ missiles at an alleged chemical weapons facility, each of which cost £790,000 ($1.13 million) – totaling £6.32 million ($9 million). The missiles were manufactured by BAE Systems.

Theresa May’s husband has worked as a relationship manager for the research investment company Capital Group since 2005. The Tory-BAE links go even deeper, however. The former chancellor of the exchequer and present editor-in-chief at the Evening Standard, George Osborne’s other employer Black Rock is the fifth-largest shareholder in BAE Systems.

Figures revealed as of March 31, 2018 reveal that the Capital Group has amassed over 360,000 shares in the company, up over 11 percent on the previous quarter, which may have contributed to a hefty rise in BAE’s share price, which currently stands at around 600p.

Philip May’s Capital Group was linked to the Paradise Papers scandal in 2017. News and current affairs magazine, Private Eye, suggested at the time that Philip May's company used offshore law firm Appleby to devise investments in tax havens.

When asked at the time of the scandal about her husband's role, a spokesperson for the UK PM told reporters: "Mr May is involved in the development of Capital Group’s retirement solutions. He is not an investor but consults with other Capital associates on retirement products and solutions for clients.”

The latest news comes on the back of a recent deal agreed by BAE Systems and the Saudi government for the provisional sale of 48 Typhoon jets to the kingdom. The deal was welcomed by the relevant government officials from the UK and Saudi Arabia, who say it would help safeguard jobs. However, it was criticized by arms campaigners worried about the ongoing war in Yemen.

Companies profiting from war – not a new concept, but many may question how this all sits with Philip May, the PM’s supposedly ‘closet political ally.’
