Default Kangaroo Carcass shows Typical Big Cat Predation

    Hi all!

I am a delivery driver, and drive from Rosebud to Flinders on the Mornington Peninsula on a regular basis. I pass through Green's Bush, a wilderness reserve that is home to a large population of grey kangaroos.

A few days ago, as I was driving this route, I spotted a kangaroo carcass on the side of the road. It certainly didn't look like any regular type roadkill carcass, so I stopped to take a look.

I was struck by the precision and extent of the predation. The abdomen and chest cavity were completely eaten out, and the spine was picked clean. It sent shivers up my spine to think that whatever did this was out there in the bush, not so far away. I looked up pictures of other kills, and found this method of predation to be identical on other carcasses that were claimed to be made by a big cat.

They are out there, and I've personally talked to a number of people who have seen them.

Here are some pics, let me know your thoughts.

How big a cat are we talking about? A 75 pound cougar or larger? And picked clean is right. Any claw marks?

One Australian researcher, Vaughan King, believes there are three different types of big cat in Australia, mountain lions, leopards and jaguars.

A former coworker saw a fawn coloured big cat cross the road in front of him. That was only a few km from this carcass.

I was pretty dumbfounded by the kill. I didn't see any claw marks, but that may be because I wasn't specifically looking for any at the time. I did notice how the skin was neatly peeled back to expose the insides.

You may want to compare my pics with those of other kills on the website below. One in particular, the ewe killed at Red Hill, is very near the northern end of Green's Bush.

It does look like like a cat kill ... I didn't know Australia had big cats.

North American cougar kill ... similar style ...

Two steps ahead, and you are deemed a crackpot.

They didn't, any more than the UK did. Released from captivity is best guess?

If you saw a fawn colored one close by, that is a cougar/mountain lion. I didn't know big cats were in Australia either. Here in Upstate NY there are fawn and black cougars.

The range you and the article point to suggests a robust area around Melbourne. Fascinating.

So the only large carnivore WAS the Tasmanian Tiger, a dog-like marsupial that is supposed to be extinct (but has been seen by someone I knew, in the Grampians, Victoria)

So ecologically, there is a 'gap in the market'

The feral cats are getting larger, I think this is evolution, they are responding to that opportunity.

Beyond that , there are always escaped exotic pets, the odd one that one gets all over the world. The difference in Australia is, that with the lack of a potential partner, for , say, a cougar, they would be able to breed with the ferals. You could see the emergence of a new, large, hybridised species. That would be wonderful.
