What makes something 'funny' is an abrupt shift in context; bringing together disparate items from radically different realms of meaning. For example --- pope on a rope soap. Then there is wordplay etc..

Because the nature of comedy is unexpected it triggers a pleasurable nervous reaction that provokes hooting in unison with other social primates. Chimps are probably limited to slapstick but I am sure they laugh their asses off together and equally sure that group laughter in both of our species creates bonding.

The interesting thing about humor is it is a product of the most sophisticated part of the mind without being an intellectual exercise. If you have to explain it, the magic is gone.

The interesting thing about humor is it is a product of the most sophisticated part of the mind without being an intellectual exercise. If you have to explain it, the magic is gone.
It can be explained. Its not so complicated.

Laughing at a joke is dependent on the expectation of the mind. A line of thought is given by the joker, leading the listener in a certain logical direction. Then comes the punch-line, which suddenly changes direction that leads to an entirely different unexpected outcome. This sudden jolt to a different direction stops the logical mind in its tracks. The listener ends up laughing at the sudden shift from the expected outcome to an unexpected endpoint.

In this way, laughing at a good joke comes out of a stoppage of the mind. It comes out of a sudden stop & shift in direction. One is basically laughing at oneself for being led in a direction, then fooled, and left suddenly at a different endpoint.

This is from where the saying comes...
Fools laugh at others, wisdom laughs at itself...
    Three types of laughter

It has to be understood that there are three types of laughter.
The first is when you laugh at someone else. This is the lowest, the meanest, the most ordinary and the most vulgar - when you laugh at the expense of somebody else. This is the violent, the aggressive, the insulting type. Deep down this laughter there is a feeling of revenge that is associated with it. It suits the lower I.Q. type of people.

”The second type of laughter is when you laugh at yourself. This is worth achieving. This is cultured. And, the individual that can laugh at himself has a certain quality that is valuable to have - one who can laugh at himself/herself. The individual has risen above the vulgarity, has risen above low-end instincts of insults, hatred, aggression, violence.

”And the third is the last – the highest. This is not about anybody – neither the other nor oneself. The third is just cosmic - the Cosmic laugh to the Cosmic joke. You laugh at the whole situation as it is. The whole situation as it is, is absurd.

Such is the way it is - the way the Cosmos as it is – moving so beautifully, so systematically, so rationally. If you can see this whole Cosmos as it is, then a laughter is bound to be inevitable.

    Turiya,

Agreed. I think one of the many reasons that ufos are so susceptible to invoking a giggle response is they create a literal nervous group convulsion by the extreme juxtaposition of the mundane against something that is from an entirely different realm of meaning.

This is a really interesting reaction because it accomplishes so much in the individual and collective unconscious. If people are not mentally and emotionally prepared for the radically new or different, the unconscious does its work to file it in the laughter file. It becomes endearingly goofy, harmless, almost cute.

I am speaking for my generation. I think most modern younger people are not susceptible to this kind of mental dynamic.

As far as laughing at others in a mean spirit or schadenfreud (spelling?) it is the bully's stock in trade. But when one is returning bullying with bullying it seems appropriate.

As far as modern comics who want to get ahead, they have resorted to lowering the bar ever lower and now focus almost entirely on bowel movements, masturbation, kinky sex and even abortion. It's a sad state of affairs when adults laugh at child's humor and even sadder when women joke about abortion. There are things that are just never funny in any way.

    10 Types of Humor

    1. Laugh-at-life humor

Your profile probably says, “I don’t take myself too seriously.” When something bad happens, you’re likely to take a deep breath and look for the absurd in the situation — and then laugh about it. Dave Barry and The Onion are among your favorites. You don’t even need an audience, as you’re very happy to laugh about something annoying all by yourself. People like to be around you because of your sunny outlook. Just make sure your date knows that you can take things seriously at times, too.

    2. Bonding-in-the-moment humor

“We’re in this together, and isn’t it fun?” is your general outlook. You’re the type to crack a joke at just the right moment or toss a witty, lighthearted remark into a conversation before it turns too serious. Down to earth, warm and good-natured, you make people feel happy and good with your attempts at humor. This is a very likable type of humor to express, but be careful to make sure someone isn’t feeling hurt or excluded by what you’re joking about during conversation.

    3. Slapstick comedy

You think Airplane was the best movie ever made. Charlie Chaplin and the Three Stooges are classics in your book. Slapstick comedy relies on physical humor, pranks and absurd situations for laughs. List some of your favorite goofy slapstick movies in your profile, but avoid slipping a Whoopee cushion onto your date’s chair during your first outing together.

    4. Sarcasm: Bitter much?

Your sense of humor is dark, biting and sharp. The Daily Show is on your list of favorite programs. Be careful with the way you word your profile and emails, because sarcasm can come off as unnecessarily harsh without the benefit of tone of voice and facial expressions to soften the delivery. Save it for when you’re together with someone in person and can temper your biting wit with a smile — and don’t go overboard with it.

    5. Self-deprecating humor

You feel most comfortable laughing when you’re making fun of yourself. You like to play the clown and feel some kinship with famously self-deprecating comedians, like Chris Farley and John Belushi. While this can be endearing and charming in small doses, too much of it can make people feel uneasy around you. You’ll really want to use this type of humor sparingly with a brand-new date. After all, you don’t want him or her to start to believe you and look elsewhere!

    6. Dry/Deadpan humor

You can deliver a hysterically funny line without cracking a smile or raising an eyebrow while everyone around you falls down laughing.

“Quirky” doesn’t always equal “weird” or “strange.”

British comedies often produce great examples of this type of humor. The only problem? Sometimes, people don’t realize you’re kidding — and then the joke ends up falling flat. Make sure you have already developed good rapport with each other before you break out a really deadpan line on date night.

    7. Highbrow/ Witty humor

You’re clever, and your jokes show intelligence. You’re the type of person who can find the subtle humor in a situation and tease it to the surface by using a brilliant one-liner that’s made that much funnier because no one else thought of it first. While this can be a great style of humor to employ on dates, just be careful not to come across as a know-it-all instead.

    8. Jokes at others’ expense

You don’t have a problem making fun of other people. In fact, it’s the way you’re most likely to make a joke. Ridicule, teasing, and sarcasm can be aggressive and downright mean, and following up such statements with “just kidding” doesn’t dull the sting. Be careful! This is a tough type of humor for most people to relate to, especially when it’s your go-to method of cracking a joke. Maybe you can dig deep and find a way to be funny that isn’t done at someone else’s expense?

    9. “Bathroom” humor

Fart jokes? You’re all over it. If it’s something gross or gory, you’ve got all the details — and you think it’s hysterical. Now, while this type of humor can lead to riotous laughter, it’s definitely something that you might want to hold back on using during a date until you know someone fairly well. This kind of talk can come across as crude and lowbrow too easily when you’re trying to make a good impression.

    10. Quirky cultural references

You’ve got a movie quote for every situation in life, it seems. The only problem is, your date hasn’t seen — or even heard of — the film you’re quoting from. And maybe you’re the person who will burst out laughing at something no one else in your group finds all that funny. You’re offbeat and unique, and your sense of humor shows it. “Quirky” doesn’t always equal “weird” or “strange.” It can be endearing — and you might find someone with the same appreciation for such unconventional humor, so you don’t want to try to change your own personality to “blend in.” But in the early stages of a relationship, you might want to think of some funny things that are a little more commonly known and appreciated to riff on instead so that your date will get the joke instead of staring blankly in confusion.

Isn't it curious that it's the female who is leading the parade in shaping the culture to acclimate to the vicious, vulgar, disrespectful and disparaging.

Our young are acclimating to this. The competitive bar that they will aspire to will be who will be more vulgar and vicious.
I have no problem seeing more and more infants raised in centers by people who are paid to do so and older people encouraged to off themselves once they are no longer as independent or run out of money.
The wolfs and bees and griffins are the kind of people that will guarandamntee it...
What a horrible example to set.

Vulgarity is not amusing. Ridiculing others does not reflect respect. It's a sign of low standards.
I could not watch the whole thing.

It reminds me of the (though probably untrue) legend about Nero fiddling while Rome burned, and certainly speaks to the state that the corrupt cesspool of politics is in today, as it was in Rome (and in other times and places, certainly).
Perhaps the fact that it is all so blatant now is a sign that a change must come soon.
But it's not easy to stomach, and I couldn't take it either.

As a comedian, the ideal spot you want to be is right on the border between order and chaos...maybe just slightly more into chaos.

From this position you can slide into order or chaos quickly and conveniently when it's required. If you're way too chaotic(raunchy or vulgar or racy or whatever) , and you're losing your audience, you can't just suddenly become ordered(safe and clean) without your audience totally distrusting you.

The same applies if you're too ordered or safe, and the audience is getting bored, you can't just suddenly become more risky and controversial in the moment to win them back. Youll be exposed as a fraud immediately.

Straddling the line is where you wanna be....but just a little more chaotic than ordered. Every comedian has to be just a little out of control. Not alot. A little.

I think that applies in life too. Imo one should always be just slightly out of control. Slightly.

With respect Mike, I would say that is true, but only if you are still in "the game", and as long as you are part of that, you aren't really changing anything, just prolonging it.

Sure Mike, I'll give it a try. (And back atcha' )
It's been said already by several on this great thread, which is that all those people from Soros to Trump to Wolf, are still playing the game that has been designed for us to play, pitting us all against each other.
Of course, you have to take a very objective viewpoint in order to see it that way, and that's not so easy to do because we are all constantly being sucked into that very toxic game, which is destructive not only to our connections with each other but also to this planet which we are so dependent upon ( the latter issue continually being ignored thanks to all the deliberate distractions).
Trump being touted as a hero is just as shortsighted as ignoring Soros ( I like to think of him as "Sorhead" which the National Lampoon dubbed their version of Sauron, back in their late 60s version of Lord of the Rings).
Re my comparison to Nero fiddling while Rome burned, I was not referring to Michelle Wolf as such, but to the prevailing miasma of cynicism that is politics today.

PS Lots more metaphors that could be applied, as from this mess of a movie based on Stephen King's novel "The Mist"
...re how people can be turned against each other in the face of a common enemy, until the end when it becomes clear that the division in their own minds and hearts is ultimately the cause of their self-destruction, as the "enemy" was actually manifested by their own division.

    ALL IMHO, of course.

This video reminded me of a discussion we had here on this thread, I’m posting it here as an example of an intelligent and sane approach to gender rights and equality but it’s off topic here, hope that’s OK. Feel free to move it if it’s not OK, Mike.

I would say it's not only on-topic, but the core message is applicable to most other issues that are dividing our world now as well.
Those issues seem so complicated, but ultimately the answer is always so simple.
