Default Favorite 90's Music. Fess Up

    Right, let's get into it.

I walked by a woman today who smelt of subtle vanilla, more fabric softener than perfume, and not only did it remind me of a very old girlfriend, it brought me back in time..it unlocked some dusty door deep in my compartmentalized mind, and I managed to slip by the machine guns and the afghan dogs into a world that was clearly still very alive and vibrant, just temporarily forgotten: the 90's.

Never let 'em tell you time travel is impossible. Fancy tech is irrelevant - all you need is the proper scent. Or the proper song. Boom, you're there...for better or worse.

The decade will mean different things to different people, obviously, depending upon a number of factors..namely, age.

    I graduated high school in 1995. I was 18.

Four years earlier I was a freshman, wearing guess jeans and rugby shirts. I got slightly grungy as time wore on, though in my defense it was short lived - I never embraced that culture. Even then I was much too wise to embrace malnutrition(that came later, when I discovered beer). As others were embracing their misery and paleness and splotchy skin conditions as badges of honor, I'd moved on. F#ck that, I wanted a tan.

Lotta good hip hop came outta the 90's. I went thru a Snoop Dogg phase - khaki pants and sweatshirts, that is. Stop laughing, I pulled it off (no I didn't)

But when I heard Oasis, all that other music faded into the background. I still like them. I think Noel Gallagher is a song writing genius. While my friends were following bands like Phish and the Grateful Dead around the country in stuffy Volkswagons reeking of Cheetos and stale farts, I was rocking out to these dudes. I liked guitar music, rock music with melody. They sounded like sort of a millennial Beatles, and looked like 'em too. They were mimicking them..but they did it shamelessly, without the typical face-saving irony a lesser band might have adopted. I was hooked.

This is a music thread, so please post your favorite songs from the 90's. But don't be afraid to also include a personal anecdote or 2 - how old you were, what you were doing, wearing..so forth. A friend of mine just sent me a few pics of me from that era; I may even post them if I'm feeling bold enough..because without evidence of my coolness, I'd just be another Corey Goode.

I've been listening to this 90's song all weekend. I simply can't stop:

The 70s and 80s were more my time but a lot of great music came out in the 90s. Oasis produced some mighty tunes, 'All Around the World' my favourite - though I think I'd like them more had the Gallaghers not been such obnoxious twats.

I'll slightly cheat here, by the submitting this offering from the great Genesis (they had a brief come back in the 90s and released this in 91).

See past the title - there's a very definite statement here in the lyrics (and the video)

"When the power of love overcomes the love of power the world will know peace."

Mike, you are hilarious. I'll bite. I was obsessed with the song below in the early nineties. I was in my early thirties and still partying my ass off. I heard Cracker was going to be at Tipitina's http:////en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tipitina%27s in New Orleans.

I was a little behind in the whole stage diving thing, but for some reason it was on my bucket list and I planned to do it while the band was singing the song.

So, as they got into the first bars of the song, I climbed up on stage, threw my arms wide and just jumped, ala Jimmy in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quadrophenia

No one was more surprised than me when I was gracefully caught by some guys on the floor. So, I clambored up and did it again.

The guys in the band's mouths were open. Man that was fun. Still one of my favorite memories.

    Lyrics
Sometimes I want to take you down
Sometimes I want to get you low
Brush your hair back from your eyes
Take you down let the river flow
Sometimes I go and walk the street
Behind the green sheet of glass
A million miles below their feet
A million miles, a million miles
    I'll be with you girl
    Like being low
Hey, hey, hey like being stoned
    I'll be with you girl
    Like being low
Hey, hey, hey like being stoned
A million poppies gonna make me sleep
Just one rose and knows your name
The fruit is rusting on the vine
The fruit is calling from the trees
Hey don't you want to go down
    Like some junkie cosmonaut
A million miles below their feet
A million miles, a million miles
    I'll be with you girl
    Like being low
Hey, hey, hey like being stoned
    I'll be with you girl
    Like being low
Hey, hey, hey like being stoned
    Blue blue is the sun
    Brown brown is the sky
    Green green of her eyes
A million miles a million miles
Hey hey don't you want to go down
    Like some disgraced cosmonaut
A million miles below their feet
A million miles, a million miles
    I'll be with you girl
    Like being low
Hey hey hey like being stoned
    I'll be with you girl
    Like being low
Hey hey hey like being stoned
    I'll be with you girl
    Like being low
Hey hey hey like being stoned
    I'll be with you girl
    Like being low
Hey hey hey like being stoned

    Crowded House - Don't Dream It's Over

Crowded House one of my favourite bands of all time.

The bass player and original drummer (a sad suicide) brilliant.

    The song writing unusual.
Nice unusual chord sequences and timing

It must have been around 91 that as a little kid I stormed into my uncle and aunt's house to find my niece there watching mtv. She was a big fan of Nirvana and I remember we saw smells's like teen spirit. I was fascinated by the video but I also felt quite scared because it was a bit dark and moody. I think I fled home at that point.

About 10 years later I got into Nirvana obsessively myself, which lasted for quite a bit. I still enjoy their stuff as well as plenty other 90's bands.

Sadly, last year Come as you are was played at my niece's funeral

This song brings such a feeling of melancholy whenever I hear it. I saw Pearl Jam at City Park Stadium when I was in my "no makeup" phase.

When Mike said "can't stop listening to", and Valerie said "obsessed", it really made me think and try to weed a really special song out of my brain.

I don't think I need to post the Do The Evolution video by Pearl Jam... I listened/watched that about 100 times in a row with my friend. When I look back on it now, I think it's a pretty big coincidence both of us were obsessed at the same time. He's the one who showed me, and I was hooked. Every time the video would end... "Want to watch it again?"

In the 90's, we didn't get internet until 1996. So in the early 90's I got music from borrowing my friends cd's, columbia house mail order, and... (drum roll) the radio.

How many times did I call in and request "More Than A Feeling" by Boston? Definitely obsessed with that one too.

I had a 5 minute long cassette tape I put Tumbthumping by Chumbawamba on both sides of it. Think I drive my poor buddy nuts, had that one in the car ;-)

This song was playing the other day at the gym and I thought, "wow, sounds like Chris Cornell, what is this?"

Gotta admit, I only knew Black Hole Sun... My bad.

    Quote Cornell on "Spoonman":
"It's more about the paradox of who [Artis the Spooman] is and what people perceive him as. He's a street musician, but when he's playing on the street, he is given a value and judged completely wrong by someone else. They think he's a street person, or he's doing this because he can't hold down a regular job. They put him a few pegs down on the social ladder because of how they perceive someone who dresses differently. The lyrics express the sentiment that I much more easily identify with someone like Artis than I would watch him play."

Anyone else listen to Ugly Kid Joe?

    "What's Up"

Twenty-five years and my life is still
Trying to get up that great big hill
    Of hope for a destination
I realized quickly when I knew I should
That the world was made up of this brotherhood
Of man for whatever that means

    And so I cry sometimes
    When I'm lying in bed
Just to get it all out
    What's in my head
And I, I am feeling a little peculiar

And so I wake in the morning
    And I step outside
And I take a deep breath and I get real high
And I scream from the top of my lungs,
    "What's going on?!"

And I say, "Hey, hey, hey, hey!"
I said, "Hey, what's going on?"
And I say, "Hey, hey, hey, hey!"
I said, "Hey, what's going on?"

And I try, oh, my God, do I try
    I try all the time
    In this institution
And I pray, oh, my God, do I pray
    I pray every single day
    For revolution

    And so I cry sometimes
    When I'm lying in bed
Just to get it all out
    What's in my head
And I, I am feeling a little peculiar

And so I wake in the morning
    And I step outside
And I take a deep breath and I get real high
And I scream from the top of my lungs,
    "What's going on?!"

And I say, "Hey, hey, hey, hey!"
I said, "Hey, what's going on?"
And I say, "Hey, hey, hey, hey!"
I said, "Hey, what's going on?"

And I say, "Hey, hey, hey, hey!"
I said, "Hey, what's going on?"
And I say, "Hey, hey, hey, hey!"

I was listening to this around the times the New Orleans Fairgrounds burned down. My fiance died two months later.

Jesus, Val, I'm so sorry about your fiance. Thank you for sharing that.

The previous song you posted, 'Low', is sooo perfectly 90's. And also a favorite of mine.

Cristian, that Soundgarden tune is pretty bad ass. They are the consummate 90's band. Well played there.

Lots of excellent stuff here. Making my way thru all these tunes now. 'Tubthumping' haha!..wow...good one Petra!

I graduated college in May of 92....when The Black Crowes released Southern Harmony & Musical Companion.

Of course there as also early Pearl Jam (which was the best PJ)...

    Add in some Soundgarden...

    Sprinkle in some Alice...

Of course there always some collaborations....

    Crank up some early Garbage...

    Sprinkle in some Verve...

    Now that's one helleva decade!!
