Canada has produced some terrific female artists over the years.

Shania Twain ranks high for sheer attitude. I’m pretty sure this one inspired my lifelong love of leopard!

I’ve heard k.d. Lang in concert twice—once at a small local venue and once at a huge outdoor jamboree in Wheeling, West Virgina. She is by far the best voice I have ever heard live. She just blew it out of the park in both places.

Melanie Doane is a more obscure artist, but I love this one.

I saw KD Lang at the old O'Keefe Center in Toronto back in '96 (an ex girlfriend dragged me to the show). I walked away very impressed and picked up her current album at the time. Lemme tell yas, her All You Can Eat album should be essential for anyone's collection (it is 5 star, imo).

    Genius.

The second song actually came out in 2000. I'm making allowances here. Why? Because it's my ****ing thread, that's why

Back when I could tolerate caffeine, I'd drink endless cups of strong coffee and listen to these guys over and over. I had this theory that if I listened to genius repetitively, it would eventually download into my brain and would be at my disposal someday in some form or another should I attempt something creative. It still remains a theory, I'm afraid.

Wow... 90's... I read I'm about your age Mike (I'm born in 1977). 90's was the time I developed a personal taste, starting with Hip Hop (Public Enemy, A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Black moon, Black Sheep, Dr Dre, Snoop, Fugees, Biggie, Cypress Hill, Wu Tang Clan, Gravediggaz, Psycho Realm and soo many more groups/artists). Thoroughly enjoyed that period at the time; only later realizing the kind of effect the (gangsta rap) music had on my life. Though specifically Public Enemy opened my young eyes on different subjects and sparked my distrusting the government. Fear of a black planet was the first album I listened to maybe hundreds of times. This was one of the favorites from that album:

Within the Hip Hop phase there was also a 3 year period of Dutch hardcore (Techno-ish Dutch style). To give you all an impression. (Make sure volume is low (or off even ))

I actually was present during that party. Loads of extasy pills involved. Period lasted 3 years and trashed my body intensely (still recovering ).

After the devastating hardcore period, I mellowed out, trying to get into a more sustainable way of living. Here's one of my favorites from that period:

And during last couple of years I found out what great music Radiohead has created. I liked some of the numbers already in the nineties, but didn't know their albums back then.
One of my favorites from the 90's from Radiohead:

Hey Slobbe, thanks for those selections and all the background!

    The hardcore Dutch techno was....interesting

Man I had no idea that all the hip hop of that era was so popular in your neck of the woods too. You made a great list there. I might add the Ghetto Boys to it, if I may. This song was a favorite of mine for a while:

I’m sorry about your son and fiance, Valerie. You’ve had more than your fair share of sadness, but it’s nice that you can find some solace in music. Mike is right that it has the power to transport us back to an earlier place and time.

I liked the story about your son and the missing CD. Sounds like he either decided to return it or find it for you after he died—knowing that you'd make the connection and smile.

With all that’s going on in the world, I find this discussion about 90’s music to be rather soothing—the songs that everyone is posting are transporting me back to a time when the biggest thing I had to worry about was learning how to use a new-fangled thing called a computer! I bought my first one in 1994, but was using them at work by the start of that decade.

The 1990’s was also the decade when I sat in a meeting and heard two managers say that “this world wide web thing” was just a fad and wouldn’t really catch on!
Chanie, that is so sweet, but I don't feel sad anymore. It took a long time and a lot of hard work, but I bring my son up a lot because I love him. He may be out of my line of sight, but he's still alive. I love this thread because it reminds me of him and me. We raised each other.

Crowded House one of my favourite bands of all time.

The bass player and original drummer (a sad suicide) brilliant.

    The song writing unusual.
Nice unusual chord sequences and timing

Yes! Some of the finest pop songs ever crafted. Tim Finn also has some really good solo albums.

My real love is harder rock music and The Queens of the Stone Age are my all time favorite, except for Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and a hundred others. Haha!

This is their first album, from the 90s, but they've gotten better every year.

Mike, hats off & kudos for starting this great thread!

The 90's had great decades of music behind it that fed the artists. IMHO Technology was at a point where it aided the musicians to find what they wanted without totally taking the human 'touch' out of it. That said, recently some music has too much tech - EDM and other electronic music excluded, again IMO, Electronic music has found itself (for lack of a better description - too many thoughts going through my mind fright now.)

Currently, I am searching for new music and wondering where is music headed? Perhaps where are at a spot where we need a band to come along and kick the industry in it's ass like the Sex Pistols did. Like the roar that Nirvana started.

Music is certainly such a strong part of our culture. The basic drum since the earliest of time. In the 90's guitar sounds really defined a band, and also the sound of the snare drum. I could go on and on, but I got some work to do.

Thanks Crosby. It's overdue. Sometimes all that excessive caution and insecurity and paranoia needs smashing. It's bad for the soul. I'm not involved in social media, so this is about as demonstrative as I get. But I'll likely have Bukowski back up there within a week

Crowded House ARIA Hall of Fame Induction 2016
Crowded House's historic induction into the ARIA Hall of Fame for anyone who didn't get to experience it (or just wants to watch it again). This is the complete 23-minute video, and includes a humorous intro by Flight of the Conchords, a recap of the Crowded House's history, the band's memorable acceptance speech, quality tributes by Missy Higgins (Fall at Your Feet) and Bernard Fanning (Better Be Home Soon), concluding with Crowded House playing an awesome version of Distant Sun

Having done covers of some of tiier songs I am biased.
Covering songs forces one to really listen note by note chord by chord.
For me they have it all,
Rock vocals, great harmonies. melodic bass playing--the songs tell stories.
One of the best bands of their time for me.

    Chris

Greybeard, I was a fan of Crowded House and also the Finn brothers’ earlier group Split Enz.

Here’s a link to one of the latter’s early songs I Got You. It’s pre-90’s so I won’t embed the video here.

I remember that Split Enz had an edgier sound and look, especially Tim Finn.

Oops. Forgot to add the link!
