Well, if it's passing behind Jupiter (which I totally doubt), its length would have to be greater or equal to about 40% of Jupiter's diameter, which is about 140,000 km. That'd mean the object would need to be at least 56,000 km long, or about 35,000 miles.

It also appears to traverse Jupiter's diameter in less than a second, which (if it had actually done that) would put its speed at something close to the speed of light, which is just under 300,000 km/sec. And if it was going that fast, we'd probably not be able to see it at all!

Suggested conclusion: I'd bet about $1,000 that it's a satellite.

Well thought out - still pretty nippy for a satellite!

If hou have an i-Phone, you can install the app: sky guide, it tells you exactly when there is something passing in the sky above your head, including the ISS and "falling stars" and i think this is indeed a sattelite.
I'm using it a lot, on the hot nights the last couple of days.😀

Thanks. Although I don't possess an i-phone (yes, we do exist!) there are websites which give good info of what's currently up there & when to see it.

I was viewing Jupiter through an 8" Reflector as I was setting it up back in 2010 and witnessed something pass in front of it ( quite slowly due to Jupiters size )
I noted the time and tried to match to known sat passes for the time without any luck.
I also checked out positions of the Jovian moons without finding a match for the time frame (not sure how many new moons have been discovered around it since then though !)
Through the scope at the time the "object" seemed closer to Jupiter than Earth as focus was OK on both Jupiter and the object - I doubt by the focusing at the time that this was an earth orbit sat passing in front of my view..
Would love to know what I saw ( again ! )

I cannot say what this is . I make no assumptions, it does appear to go behind Jupiter. But again, could pass in front as well. Because of the light distortion, it is difficult to determine. None the less, a good catch by the videographer .

As Bill points out, it is moving at a near light speed. I don't think there is a camera made that could catch it without much blurring or just a zip. I also am a technophobe and don't posses an I anything lol. It would be interesting though, if someone could prove / eliminate if it is a satellite .

While I would love to believe it is a secret space program megastructure longer than several earths placed next to each other, I think it’s an optical illusion.

Looking at the images, it appears to have a blurred luminosity very close to that of the magnified planet. As it approaches, you can see that the 2 light sources bleed together, giving the appearance that it is passing through Jupiter, not behind it.

One thing we cannot know from this video is the distance of the moving object.

Jupiter is 588 - 968 million kilometers away from earth. Is it possible that this object was closer, as opposed to farther out?

It’s a very good clickable thumbnail and video title though!
