Default How many "Mattress Firm'' stores do you have in your area?

A wildly popular conspiracy theory about why there are so many Mattress Firm stores is starting to sound less crazy

If you've ever wondered why there seems to be a Mattress Firm on every corner in your city, you're not alone. But one explanation for this phenomenon is more extreme than you might expect.

On Tuesday, a comment on Reddit claiming that Mattress Firm, the largest specialty mattress retailer in the US, is a money-laundering operation went viral — but it has since been deleted, The Next Web reported .

"Mattress Firm is some sort of giant money laundering scheme," a Reddit user wrote, adding: "I remember seeing 4 mattress firms all on each corner of an intersection once, and there is no way there is such a demand for mattresses."

Mattress Firm, which acquired Sleepy's in 2015, now has over 3,500 stores, sometimes in high concentrations. But Reddit users argue that there are too many, especially given that it stocks a product that people typically buy every seven to 10 years .

The South African retailer Steinhoff bought Mattress Firm for $3.8 billion in 2016 . At the time, analysts were skeptical about why Steinhoff had forked over so much for a business increasingly threatened by new startups such as Casper.

Toward the end of last year, Steinhoff's stock price tanked by as much as 62% in one day, wiping out $15 billion of its market value, Reuters reported . The company postponed publishing its full-year accounts, citing " accounting irregularities ," and its two top executives and chairman have resigned.

I just checked in the largest city near me it had 8 stores for a town population of 555,400,

I was just talking about this with my wife a couple weeks ago. We have two new Mattress Firm stores right down the street and they are within a 1/4 mile of each other. I said I couldn’t understand why they had two so close when they are both completely empty of customers every single day. I drive past both of them 2-4 times a day. One sits right across from a Sleep Outfitters, which is also always empty. I never heard any theories about money laundering. Very interesting. By who I wonder?
Btw, I live in a city of about 330,000 and we have 4 Mattress Firm stores.

Weird .... I know on the Denver 16th street mall they have a StarBucks on almost every corner to keep you awake and now Sleep Firm stores on every corner want you to sleep. When mattress are replaced on the average 7-10 years something up. Now what's on TV?

Well I know there are quite a few mattress shop here in New England as there has been a plague of bedbugs, for the past 5-10 years now. That could also be an issue, just a thought.

I just did a quick Google search... Turns out, there are two within literally a half-mile radius of one another, near me, as well!!! That is incredibly interesting.

And this is slightly off topic (Sorry. Not trying to hijack the thread):

I've often wondered about another store right next to one of them, called "Eagle Furniture." Considering, it seemed to just pop out of nowhere in our rundown, vacant mall here in Burlington, WA.

Soon after, there was a shooting at the Macy's right next to it.

I was already suspicious of the place to begin with, thinking it was some sort of front for something, because it had been open for a few months, but it had always looked so dead and mysterious...

Now, a few years later, it finally has observable business and inventory to sell. But, I swear, it didn't for the longest time...

Anyhow, I can't help but intuitively feel that shooting was tied to them, somehow.

Also, right when I heard about the shooting, immediately the nearby military base in the islands came to mind... And after a few days of passive speculation, the shooter was "caught." And sure enough, it turned out, he was indeed a resident of Oak Harbor, exactly where the Navy base happens to be located... And, I kid you not, he even worked there [at the base] at one point!! Then, apparently, suicided, while in prison...

    Strange times we're living in...

Anyhow, if anyone may know anything about Eagle Furniture, please, do share!!

Again, not trying to steal your thread... The information you shared is just so incredibly peculiar, and got me correlating these things, considering the close proximity of these two "stores" ...

Thanks for the post. Have an awesome day!

Quite true hadn't thought of that I've been living overseas for years and haven't had that problem but my friend in Denver did last year and they had to tent his house and replace all mattresses

BTW the city I looked at for 'mattress firm'' wasn't in the top 50 and it still doesn't make sense with that many mattress firms in one town competing with 7 others in a city of 500k

Btw, I live in a city of about 330,000 and we have 4 Mattress Firm stores.
    Let's do some math:

    330,000 buy a mattress for $500 every 10 yeas in 4 stores

    -> 330,000 * 500 / 10 / 4 = $4,125,000 revenue per store and year.

Sounds like a good business, even if it was just half of that. No conspiracies needed to explain that.

FFT: That question pops up from time to time. Google results

    Article: June 21, 2016

I wonder: why are there so many Mattress Firm stores? The answer, it seems, boils down to simple ease of access:

Convenience is king and the ability to experience a mattress is important in finding the right one,” Blackmore said. “We invest in real estate in highly-trafficked intersections and shopping centers in our key markets to maintain visibility.”

Makes sense, right? But why so many stores so close together?

“We use a proprietary system that defines zones by things such as population and drive time to decide when and where to add additional stores in various markets,” Blackmore said. “This sometimes results in having Mattress Firm locations in close proximity, as seen in Boise.””
SIDE NOTE: Mattress Firm uses the line “replace every eight” in its advertising — and one local mattress retailer told me off-the-record that MF’s heavy advertising push and concept of replacing your sleeping surface so often has actually increased demand and lifted their business, despite the heavy new competition.

(For what it’s worth, Consumer Reports says the jury is still out on how long you should wait in between mattress purchases).

BOISE — If you’ve driven down any major thoroughfare you’ve probably seen them: large buildings with high windows and big glowing signs. Inside, dozens of places to rest your head.

Mattress stores are popping up all over the valley — and one chain has taken the idea to new heights. In three years of following #BoiseDev, it’s the question I get most often:
    [snip]

Now, the sleeping giant has a unique concentration of stores which are often in close proximity, leading many to wonder: why so many?

Consider this — at State St. and Glenwood, Mattress Firm has a pair of locations that are just 300 feet apart from door-to-door.

But if dodging cars across seven lanes of Glenwood is overwhelming — head out to Eagle Rd. & Lanark, where two Mattress Firm locations are less than 200 feet apart — and sit literally right next door to each other.

In all, Mattress Firm has 11 locations in Ada and Canyon Counties (plus a “Got Sleep” outlet in Boise Towne Square, one of five shops in the mall area). No single store is more than one mile from a sister outlet.

So what’s going on? I checked in with a Mattress Firm spokesperson to better understand the decisions that seem a little bewildering to an outsider.

@DonLDay well sometimes you want a mattress but the stores on the other side of the street and don't want to make a left hand turn

    — Fernet Bronco (@BusterBroncoEsq) 12:54 PM - Feb 20, 2015
“Across the country, we have clusters of successful stores that do very well within close proximity,” Mattress Firm public relations manager G’Nai Blackmore told me by email.
The answer, it seems, boils down to simple ease of access:

“Convenience is king and the ability to experience a mattress is important in finding the right one,” Blackmore said. “We invest in real estate in highly-trafficked intersections and shopping centers in our key markets to maintain visibility.”

although the co. "Matress Firm" doesn't exist in Germany we're plastered everywhere with "Dänisches Bettenlager" (Danish bed depot) and "Dänisches Möbellager" (Danish furniture depot)-

just recently bought 2 matresses from the bed depot and they are incredibly comfortable; they were on sale; ever notice how bed/matress stores always have everything on sale?- hmmm...

was in Copenhagen a few yrs. ago and saw neither/nor of these stores- in fact I think the furniture I saw in Denmark had to be the ugliest, most unimaginative furniture I've ever seen- the "Danish" furniture offered in Germany is much more beautiful and most items, like beds/matresses are always on sale- hmmm...

the world's largest logistics firm, Maersk, is headquartered in Copenhagen-

so if/IF matress, etc. firms are money-laundering companies then what is Maersk actually transporting and what made it so huge and why the big Danish connection in Germany?- both countries share the same unobtrusive land border-

Btw, I live in a city of about 330,000 and we have 4 Mattress Firm stores.
    Let's do some math:

    330,000 buy a mattress for $500 every 10 yeas in 4 stores

    -> 330,000 * 500 / 10 / 4 = $4,125,000 revenue per store and year.

Sounds like a good business, even if it was just half of that. No conspiracies needed to explain that.
Well, a couple problems with that. One, there are dozens of other businesses selling mattresses and, two, I see these stores every day several times a week and they are always empty. The law of averages says I should occasionally see customers there. I never do.

Talking about money laundering, i heard (cant remember where) that in the 70s/80's Trump bought a holding company that owned casinos in new jersey. The casinos had been used for money laundering for the previous owners of the holding company, a front company for the cia.

After watching the PK Dick documentary I think this sleep mattress firm conspiracy is not as simple as money laundering nor the starbuck on every corner business model senario . If you notice where these stores are located on the map in your area you will notice they are strategically placed on main thoroughfares which can only mean one thing. Alien invasion.......to be called out in unison when the time is ripe which will put our nation to sleep.

    I'm kidding.

Interesting. I always thought it was the Mob doing the laundering. Now it looks to be a much bigger consortium.
And the competition is only heating up:

NEW YORK (AP) — Online mattress seller Casper plans to open 200 stores in the U.S. over the next three years as part of an effort to solidify its position in the retail market.

The 4-year-old company has been testing locations by opening 20 stores with short-term leases over the last few years. It opened its first permanent store in Manhattan this year.

Its expansion comes as Houston-based Mattress Firm is reportedly considering filing for bankruptcy.

Casper CEO Philip Krim says the company's stores have been very successful, since shoppers like to touch and try out mattresses.

The company is among a slew of online retailers like Untuckit and Warby Parker that are stepping up the pace at which they expand their store locations.

    Exactly.
And the other question is: where are all the OLD mattresses going? The math suggests there must be many cubic miles of traded-in, barely-used mattresses that are nowhere to be found on Planet Earth.

The Biggest Secret may be that they're going to Mars, in giant Solar Warden craft the size of supertankers to barter with aliens who will give us advanced technology in exchange for a good night's sleep. (Even a regular tiny single mattress would be King Sized for them....)
