Has Egypt's second sphinx been found?

Egypt's long-rumoured second sphinx may have been unearthed by construction workers building a new road.

According to local reports, a sphinx-like statue was found on Al-Kabbash Road, which connects the two temples of Karnak and Luxor built around 1400BC.

Officials have confirmed the statue has a 'lion's body with a human head'.

The 'second sphinx' has not yet been lifted from the ground, however, officials said tourists are welcome to visit the construction site to view the ancient statute.

No photographs of the structure have been published, the Director General of Antiquities has confirmed.

Excavations first started on the Karnak and Luxor temple complexes, located within the ancient city of Thebes, back in 1884, according to RT.

This led to a flurry of significant archaeological discoveries until around 1960, when excavation work at the sites ceased.

Construction workers uncovered the 'second sphinx' during a roadworks project between the temples of Karnak and Luxor.

The Egyptian infrastructure project has been halted while the statue is examined.

According to the area's Director General of Antiquities, Mohamed Abdel Aziz, the statue can not yet be lifted 'due to the nature of the environment it is in'.

Aziz has confirmed tourists are able to visit the road to see the statue for themselves, however, he confirmed no images of the statue have been released.

The Al-Kabbash Road project to excavate and restore the road first began in 2005 and is scheduled to be finished by the end of this year at a cost of $12.7 million (£10m).

Luxor is well known for its love of Sphinxes in fact it even has an Avenue of Sphinxes which connected it to the Great Temple of Amon at Karnak.





Luxor came much later than the great sphinx at giza maybe 3 thousand to 20 thousand years. Luxor was formed in 1400 bce.
I find it strange tourist can see this '2nd' sphinx but no photos? Still a great find none the less

Neither of these reports, mine or yours gives us the size of this sphinx nor the one discovered in Luxor.

Laughable, it´s just 1 meter small. More of a furniture.

I've walked this mile and a half road. Cited over 1100 Sphinx's there and no doubt many still toppled buried in the dirt along the road and close by. I don't see any significance or importance finding 'another one' in this area..

An avenue of human headed sphinxes of over one and a half miles (3 km) once connected the temples of Karnak and Luxor. This road was used once a year during the Opet festival when the Egyptians paraded along it carrying the statues of Amun and Mut in a symbolic re-enactment of their marriage. At Luxor temple Amun was magically transformed into Min the god of fertility.

Luxor Temple Sphinxes
Around 1,350 sphinx statues are thought to have lined this road together with barque chapels stocked with offerings. Queen Hatshepsut (1479-1425 BC) built six of these chapels. Each of which had a precise function such as to cool the oar of Amun or to receive the beauty of Amun.

The construction of the Avenue of Sphinxes was begun during the New Kingdom and finished during 30th Dynasty rule of Nectanebo I (380-362 BC).

The road was renovated by the Ptolemaic Queen Cleopatra (51-30 BC) and later used by the Romans. Recently 850 sphinx fragmented have been discovered along a section of Sphinx road built Amenhotep III (1390-1352 BC).
