Default National Solar Observatory, USPS office in Sunspot, NM evacuated for 'safety reasons'

SUNSPOT, New Mexico - The National Solar Observatory in Sunspot, New Mexico, and a nearby United States Postal Service office, were evacuated for security reasons Thursday, observatory officials said.

"We have decided to temporarily vacate this facility as a precautionary measure. And we're working with the proper authorities on this issue," Association for Universities for Research in Astronomy spokeswoman Sheri Lofson said.

Friday, both properties remained closed to the public, with yellow caution tape around the property.

Sunspot is located in the Sacramento Mountains in Otero County about 15 miles south of Cloudcroft. There is currently a working telescope at the observatory, where New Mexico State University also conducts research.

"As locals I feel that we should know what's going on around us," Cloudcroft resident Roger Wiley said.

A spokesman for the Otero County Sheriff's Office said they are not involved in the investigation.

A post office in the area has also been shut down..... more but not much more

My thoughts? Something in the mail? Why wasn't the local police informed? Other nations also have solar observatories, I can't find any big news from them either hinting on something going on with the sun. Anyway I thought it was interesting

I wonder why they used the word “evacuated”.

Looking up the word “evacuate” I get:

    [ih-vak-yoo-eyt]
    * to remove (persons or things) from a place, as a dangerous place or disaster area, for reasons of safety or protection:
    * to evacuate the inhabitants of towns in the path of a flood.
    * to remove persons from (a city, town, building, area, etc.) for reasons of safety:
    * to evacuate the embassy after a bomb

So the Solar Observatory AND the Post Office have been closed for 'security reasons'?

Look at this yellow tape and a stop sign ..... doesn’t seem to be that serious. Or.........

Sunspot Observatory entrance was blocked with a stop sign and yellow crime scene tap Friday morning. The facility is temporarily closed until further notice.
    Dylan Taylor-Lehman/Daily News

    ** ADD :
This is the facility that we’re talking about here.

    Spokeswoman Shari Lifson said.

“We don’t know that yet (when the facility will open again),” Lifson said. “We are working with the proper authorities on this issues. The local authorities do know and are aware of the situation. I don’t know when the facility was vacated but it was within the last day. It’s a temporary evacuation of the facility. We open it up as soon as possible.”

She said she cannot comment on whether the FBI was involved in the situation.

Otero County Sheriff Benny House said the Otero County Sheriff’s Office was asked to standby.

“The FBI is refusing to tell us what’s going on,” House said. “We’ve got people up there (at Sunspot) that requested us to standby while they evacuate it. Nobody would really elaborate on any of the circumstances as to why. The FBI were up there. What their purpose was nobody will say.”

He said he has a lot of unanswered question about what occurred at Sunspot.

“But for the FBI to get involved that quick and be so secretive about it, there was a lot of stuff going on up there,” House said. “There was a Blackhawk helicopter, a bunch of people around antennas and work crews on towers but nobody would tell us anything.”

The Daily News contacted the Albuquerque FBI spokesman seeking comment for this story, but telephone calls and messages were never returned.

House said he pulled his deputies from the facility after there was no identifiable threat.

“They wanted us up there to help evacuate but nobody would tell us anything,” he said. “We went up there and everything was good. There was no threat. Nobody would identify any specific threat. We hung out for a little while then we left. No reason for us to be there. Nobody would tell us what we’re supposed to be watching out for.”

House said he doesn’t understand why Sunspot didn’t call or notify them of the situation.

“They’re not federal employees,” he said. “It maybe somebody who threatened one of their workers. If that’s the case, why didn’t call us and let us deal with it. These guys are regular workers that work for this company. I don’t know why the FBI would get involved so quick and not tell us anything.”

Default National Solar Observatory, USPS office in Sunspot, NM evacuated for 'safety reasons'

News outlets have reported over the last few days that the National Solar Observatory in Sunspot, New Mexico, was evacuated and closed last Thursday. According to reports, it's still closed. A local post office and some homes were also evacuated. Federal agents, reportedly, were/are there.

From an article published today by the Daily Mail: The FBI has since showed up to the site and Blackhawk helicopters have been seen circling overhead, but officials remain tight-lipped as to what’s going on, saying only that they are ‘addressing a security issue.’

I should also point out that the closure has coincided with a geomagnetic storm that we've been experiencing here on Planet Earth.

The short video below includes local news coverage.

    **********

Update: This post is the OP of a thread that I started this evening. My apologies. My search effort did not turn up Ichingcarpenter's thread. There is some new news here: The observatory remains closed.

I don't watch a lot of movies, but I did see the Thor films. When I first saw the headline on what was happening in Sunspot, New Mexico, I immediately thought it must be Thor's hammer. Then I went to, "Ok, this is interesting," followed quickly by "Remember who we're dealing with: MSM and our government." It could be a show, or an illusion -- maybe with bits borrowed from Marvel -- to take us for a ride (a distraction or to set us up for a fall).

I think the Thor clip below was filmed somewhere in that area.

I like Jim Stone's take on this:
    Quote Solar observatory shut down
I did not see much in this but it made Drudge so I will at least mention it. A solar observatory in the town of Sunspot New Mexico got raided by the FBI complete with black hawk helicopters and the entire town was forced to leave. The problem with the alien conspiracies and "something must be wrong with the sun" conspiracies is that aliens won't care about a solar observatory and there are many many solar observatories elsewhere that can all see the same thing and none got shut down. There's no doubt something screwy going on there, but it could be anything from a major drug bust to a militia wipe out to you name it.

The bottom line is that there was nothing special about this particular observatory that is not duplicated elsewhere and aliens simply would not give a crap about our pathetic 5, 000 years outdated observation tools. The presence of an observatory where all the action happened is a probable coincidence.

More likely: There was a confirmed failed rocket launch and the rocket probably came down somewhere nearby, with a classified payload so the FBI moved in and cleared the area. That's my take on this.
The White Sands Missile Range is just 30 miles west of here, so a failed launch from there would quite possibly go down somewhere in Sunspot, New Mexico.

Oh perfect Did You See Them, I was just coming on here to post the same link. I caught the tale end of the interview where some insider by the name of 'Sam', who I believe is likely alphabet soup, came on discussing the topics in this thread and also the hurricane on my thread which is where I brought this interview up. I'm not familiar with this story as last night was the first time I heard about it, so forgive me for not being up to date on this thread. My station was transitioning to Coast to Coast am so I couldn't hear anymore of the interview and haven't had time to go back. Apparently this person has given good intel on air to Clyde before so he has a good track record. He was discussing a 'hack' situation, possibly China, and it's tied to controlling the Sun. This could be a worthwhile lead to listen to.

Just a thought - could it simply be a training exercise with some statistics gathering happening like who in social media reacts and assumes "something" (other than just the obvious - it was a simulation test complete with black helicopters and evacuations all on a "suspicious sounding town name").

Like let's all have a George Orwell-like scenario and see what social media does with it?

Me, I would go for the obvious, it was just a "test" all across the board.. My best guess is 'they got what they wanted to find out' - how social media would react, how the folks and agencies involved would react..

I think Linda Moulton Howe is a great researcher. I love hearing her insights.

    Thanks Star Tsar..

It has become known that 6 more Solar Observatories (Australia, Chile, Spain, Hawaii (2), and Pennsylvania) have been shutdown: We note that all these solar/space cams down at the same time as the Solar Observatory in New Mexico.

I think that story was found to be false, based on comments made in Linda Moulton Howe's video. After the story popped up on Drudge, she contacted someone who contacted the other observatories and found them to be open.
