There is an interesting corollary here about 'the big city mentality'. I find that as the decades go by, the mindset of the populace is becoming more 'city wise'. The mentality of the city dweller is not the same as that of someone in a small town, farm or village. Often the connection to the land is missing and appreciation of nature.

Also, whenever a solution is considered it always comes with a massive price tag and long delays. Common sense is often illusive whereas ruralites use it naturally, without the need for a committee or study. It is what keeps them out of harms way - and keeps their money in their pockets.

As we pack ourselves ever tighter, ever higher, into tiny boxes, the need for bureaucracy has increased tremendously. In a small town it is rare to meet a stranger, in the city everybody is a stranger. The city jail is always packed but the village jail holds only the town drunk - with jail cell door open...

The city mentality is what is creating the new world order. The city mentality reaches out with its bureaucracy to dominate. A small town reaches out with open hands to help.

This is the mentality that is creating the New China. Rural areas are uprooted in the name of progress and millions are dislocated - severed from the land of their ancestors. The belt road and power stations and dams are for the cities, not the towns. Over a billion peasants toil in the outlying regions while a mere few hundred million enjoy 'the modern lifestyle'. Yet those hundreds of millions are growing quickly (in America the entire population is 300,000,000+!) . There are cities built in China where no one yet lives...

But I watch for this city attitude. It is prevalent these days. The army of bureaucrats that we have trained in our universities have conquered the mind set of the urbanites, monetized every aspect of life, and dominated the rhetoric - the story we tell ourselves about ourselves.

But since that story is itself a severely edited version of the truth and wrought with errors, lies, omissions, and subterfuge any conclusions based on that city mentality will be skewed in favor of the bureaucratic ideology.

Unfortunately, that always favors centralized control, autocratic rule, and the eradication of human rights and freedoms.

Free will can only be as free as the mind that conceives it.

'Disappearance' of top Chinese actress Fan Bingbing concerns fans
    By Kerry Allen
    BBC Monitoring
    1 August 2018

Fan Bingbing recently received global attention for her appearance as Blink in the X-Men film franchise
Chinese social media users are questioning the whereabouts of one of China's biggest film stars.

Fan Bingbing is one of the world's highest paid actors, but media reports in the country say that she hasn't been seen in public since 1 July when she visited a children's hospital.

Social media users are also noting her unusual silence on the popular Sina Weibo microblog, where she has more than 62 million followers. She has not been active on her account since 23 July, when she "liked" a number of posts.

In May, prominent TV presenter Cui Yongyuan appeared to accuse Fan Bingbing of tax evasion. Her studio has denied any wrongdoing,

It has not commented on her whereabouts.

    Social media concern
Ms Fan is known internationally as a singer and model, as well as for her appearance in the X-Men film franchise.

She is one of China's most influential celebrities and posts regularly on her Weibo account. Her posts consistently receive thousands of user comments.

China caps film stars' pay over 'money worship and tax evasion'
    China's online celebrity economy
Is it a golden age for Chinese cinema?
This makes her current online silence unusual, and hundreds of thousands of social media users have been voicing their concern.

Many are replying to her most recent post on 2 June and asking for her to release a statement and confirm that she is well.

The normally active blogger's last Weibo post was on 2 June, and has hundreds of thousands of comments from concerned users
"We love you, Fan Bingbing," many users say. Another adds: "We are waiting for an answer."

Others question if she has been detained, but at present this is pure speculation. They note the recent, highly circulated allegations surrounding her in relation to a wider government tax evasion probe.

Some celebrities are alleged to have used so-called "yin-yang" contracts: dual contracts in which one sets out an actor's real earnings, and another details a lower figure, with the latter submitted to the tax authorities.

In June, the actress's studio addressed these allegations and said that the star had never signed dual contracts, "The studio and Fan Bingbing will fully cooperate with the relevant authority. We hope the investigation result can be released soon to answer the public doubt."

    Will censorship kill Chinese filmmaking?

    Report censored
In the past week, concern about Ms Fan among social media users has risen after a financial newspaper carried a controversial article hinting that she was under investigation.

The Economic Observer claimed on 26 July that several of Ms Fan's staff were being questioned by the police, and that her brother had been told that he was not allowed to leave the country. He has not commented.

Posts mentioning the Economic Observer article and an alleged investigation into Fan's staff have been censored from social media
The article was swiftly taken offline, and multiple posts that mentioned it, including some by state-affiliated media have been censored according to Free Weibo, a censorship-monitoring website.

Many financial newspapers in China are independent, but given their traditionally niche subject matter, are often overlooked by the government censors.

    Media hint at concerns
Mainstream state media have steered clear of reporting on the whereabouts of Ms Fan.

Financial media have noted that the market value of Huayi Brothers, the production company that she is signed up to, has plunged some seven per cent in the past week. However, the company has since released a statement saying that this is unrelated to Ms Fan.

Independent media including Caixin Online have reported on the "rumours" that Ms Fan has been detained, and note that her studio has not responded to phone calls from the media or fans.

Some outlets say this could be because members of her staff are being investigated, but this is unconfirmed and both Ms Fan and her team could simply be taking a break from the limelight.

Ernie...Excellent point on "the city mentality"! It becomes more of a "rat race" there, from what I have seen.

Flash...Thanks for bringing to our attention the "missing" film star from China!

China is a place with many unusual annual traditions, including a mud-flinging festival in the country’s tropical southwest and a June celebration of eating worms.
But one of the most exotic rituals comes in spring, when residents of Dongyang, 250 km south west of Shanghai, chow down on the town's local delicacy Virgin Boy Eggs.

No, they aren't the the testicles of children as one might guess, just regular chicken eggs simmered in steaming pots of ... wait for it ... boys’ urine.

The recipe for Virgin Boy Eggs is quite simple really. One first collects a bucket of pee from the local primary school. Only the water of boys under the age of ten is suitable.

Virgin Boy Eggs are first soaked in in a pot of urine, then brought to a boil. Once firm, the eggs' shells are cracked to allow fuller penetration, and bathed regularly through out the day with fresh piss to prevent them from overheating.

China Publishes Massive "White Paper" Explaining Beijing's Position On Trade War

Shortly after the Trump admin enacted another $200BN in tariffs on Chinese imports just after midnight on Monday, China published a white paper to "clarify the facts about China-US economic and trade relations, demonstrate its stance on trade friction with the United States, and pursue reasonable solutions", the Global Times reported.

Excluding the foreword, the massive, 36,000-Chinese-character white paper is comprised of six parts, which are

    - mutually-beneficial and win-win China-US cooperation in the trade and economic field,
    - clarification of the facts about China-US trade and economic relations,
    - the trade protectionist practices of the US administration,
    - the trade bullyism practices of the US administration,
    - damage of the improper practices of the US administration to global economy, and
    - China's position.

China is the world's biggest developing country and the United States is the biggest developed country, said the white paper. "Trade and economic relations between China and the United States are of great significance for the two countries as well as for the stability and development of the world economy."

The white paper said the two countries are at different stages of development and have different economic systems, and therefore some level of trade friction is only natural. "The key, however, lies in how to enhance mutual trust, promote cooperation, and manage differences."

In the spirit of equality, rationality, and moving to meet each other halfway, the two countries have set up a number of communication and coordination mechanisms such as the Joint Commission on Commerce and Trade, the Strategic and Economic Dialogue, and the Comprehensive Economic Dialogue, the white paper said.

Each has made tremendous efforts over the past 40 years to overcome all kinds of obstacles and move economic and trade relations forward, which has served as the ballast and propeller of the overall bilateral relationship, according to the white paper.

However, the new administration of the US government has trumpeted "America First" since taking office in 2017, and has abandoned the fundamental norms of mutual respect and equal consultation that guide international relations, according to the authors:
"Rather, it has brazenly preached unilateralism, protectionism and economic hegemony, making false accusations against many countries and regions, particularly China, intimidating other countries through economic measures such as imposing tariffs, and attempting to impose its own interests on China through extreme pressure."

The white paper stressed China has responded from the perspective of the common interests of both parties as well as the world trade order, observing the principle of resolving disputes through dialogue and consultation, and answering the US concerns with the greatest level of patience and good faith.

The Chinese side has been dealing with these differences with an attitude of seeking common ground while shelving divergence, the white paper said. "It has overcome many difficulties and made enormous efforts to stabilize China-US economic and trade relations by holding rounds of discussions with the US side and proposing practical solutions."

However, the US side has been contradicting itself and constantly challenging China, the white paper said.

"As a result, trade and economic friction between the two sides has escalated quickly over a short period of time, causing serious damage to the economic and trade relations which have developed over the years through the collective work of the two governments and the two peoples, and posing a grave threat to the multilateral trading system and the principle of free trade."

The Chinese government published the white paper to clarify the facts about China-US economic and trade relations, demonstrate China's stance on trade friction with the United States, and pursue reasonable solutions.

It is 100% certain that nobody in Trump's inner circle - and certainly not Peter Navarro - will ever read the report.

    Commodification.

    Has China Found A UFO?

Recent projects by the Chinese government and declassified files from the United Kingdom suggest China may know more about alien life than we previously thought..

In November 2011, Google Maps uncovered bizarre structures in the Gobi Desert, in northern China In one location, strange striations, 20 metres wide, cover an area more than one kilometre wide and two kilometres long

At another place, this striking circular construct seems like a landing stage for something inhumanly large The scale of the structures indicates they are designed to be seen from a very high altitude, like the Nazca lines in Peru But unlike the Nazca lines, which can be seen from a plane, the Chinese structures are best approached from outer space… The Chinese government has refused to divulge the purpose of these remarkable sites The mainstream media immediately compared it to America’s Area 51 As a result, the media also speculated that China was using these sites to communicate with extraterrestrial life, inviting aliens to land in its back yard

The newspapers did not realise their suspicions were shared by the British government In June 2013, Whitehall declassified files from its top secret UFO Desk They reveal that between 1947 and 1997, the Ministry of Defense ran undercover UFO investigations On the one hand, it collected reports of UFO sightings in Britain On the other hand, it sent spies into the field to investigate these claims

To identify UFOs, agents were told to “Look out for high velocities, sharp manoeuvring, stationary 'flight', and few radar returns” University lecturer Dr David Clarke, the curator for The National Archives UFO project from 2008 to 2013, says, “The MoD… desperately [tried] to delay the release of these formerly secret and highly sensitive papers for more than a decade… Even though they have been partly censored they can’t conceal the fact the UK military was interested in capturing UFO technology And the files reveal they were desperate to capture this technology – wherever it came from – before the Russians or the Chinese got hold of it first” In a declassified report called, “Unidentified Aerial Phenomena in the UK Air Defense Region”, the Royal Air Force says it was “particularly interested in… propulsion, stealth and any novel electromagnetic technologies” An anonymous senior commander says, “An actual or potential enemy could develop a flying device with the characteristics that [UFO] phenomena seem to have” According to the files, the Ministry of Defence suspected China had found an alien UFO and impounded it, and was developing highly advanced weapons from it In particular, British spies believed the Chinese were using alien secrets to develop superfast aircraft that were undetectable to radar

The Chinese certainly haven’t hidden their interest in UFOs UFOlogy in China essentially began in November 1978, when the Communist Party’s official newspaper People’s Daily published an article about UFOs by a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences Then in 1979, Sun Shili co-founded China’s first UFO association By 1988, the China UFO Association had 50,000 members By the 1990s, there were dozens of alien encounters each year in China

Not long before these strange sites became public knowledge in 2011, China started building the world's largest filled-aperture radio telescope, in Guizhou province in southwest China It cost nearly half a billion dollars, and is known as Tianyan or “Heavenly Eye” Overseen by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, its dish is bigger than 30 football fields and sensitive enough to detect spy satellites even when they’re not broadcasting It is Earth’s first observatory custom-built to listen for a message from extraterrestrial intelligence This means that if any humans are to make first contact, it is most likely to be the Chinese

Ross Andersen, senior editor of The Atlantic, says, “International protocols require the disclosure of first contact, but they are nonbinding Maybe China would go public with the signal but withhold its star of origin [Or] maybe China would make the signal a state secret

” The Tianyan dish has been operational since 2016 For all we know, China could have already made first contact Yet, the Tianyen dish is run as part of the internationally co-ordinated Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence, or SETI SETI oversees and monitors the dish’s data collection It is highly unlikely it would receive an alien signal without scientists in America and elsewhere finding out about it

As for the strange structures in the Gobi Desert, they are designed to be seen from outer space – but not by alien eyes Jonathon Hill, a research technician and mission planner at the Mars Space Flight Facility at Arizona State University, says the zigzagging white lines are targets for calibrating spy satellites He also says the landing pad site is really “a calibration test target for orbital radar instruments” This may explain why there are fighter jets parked at the centre of the circle Speaking of fighter jets, China continues to expand its fleet of military aircraft, and will soon be a leading military power in the sky

However, it has only recently begun developing its own aircraft designs Until a decade ago, China relied on adopting designs and seeking engineering support from its neighbours, like Russia and Ukraine Meanwhile, in England, even though the Ministry of Defence feared China possessed a UFO, they clearly gave up pursuing it On 11th November, 2009, RAF Air Command told Defence Minister Carl Mantell that the MoD “should seek to reduce very significantly the UFO task which is consuming increasing resource, but produces no valuable defence output‟ They argued that in more than 50 years, “no UFO sighting reported to [us] has ever revealed anything to suggest an extra-terrestrial presence or military threat to the UK

[I]nvestigations into UFO sightings, even from more reliable sources, serve no useful purpose and merely divert air defence specialists from their primary tasks Accordingly, no further investigations should be carried out into UFO reports received from any source‟ In 2010, the UFO files were transferred to Britain’s National Archives and the last UFO desk officer was redeployed In an email dated to 2nd June, 2009, the officer wrote, “Naturally a section of ufologists will never be convinced [that UFOs aren’t real], but frankly, whatever we say, they will choose to believe whatever they believe and we will never convince them otherwise

‟ We cannot blame them Until 1967, the Ministry of Defence’s policy was to destroy UFO files every five years Many records have been lost In China, public interest in UFOs has dwindled Sun Shili says this isn’t surprising because “There hasn’t been a breakthrough, and reports [of sightings] are repetitive and unfounded… [But] I believe [interest in UFOs] will never wane because humans are naturally curious about the universe

Inside 'Belt and Road,' China's mega-project that is linking 70 countries across Asia, Europe, and Africa

China is currently undertaking what it considers the largest project of the century — building a network of railroads and shipping lanes linking itself with 70 countries across Asia, Africa, Europe, and Oceania.

The main focuses of the "Belt and Road" initiative — also known as "One Belt, One Road" — are in infrastructure, transportation, and energy.

Countries including India, Pakistan, Russia, New Zealand and Poland have all joined in the project. Together they make up at least a third of the world's GDP.

Scroll down to learn more about

    * "Belt and Road" is a massive trade and infrastructure project that aims to link China — physically and financially — to dozens of economies across Asia, Europe, Africa, and Oceania.

    * It consists of two parts: The "Belt," which recreates an old Silk Road land route, and the "Road," which is not actually a road, but a route through various oceans.

    * As of January 2018, 71 countries (including China) are taking part in the project. They include India, Pakistan, Poland, Turkey, New Zealand, and Russia. Altogether, these 71 countries represent a third of the world's GDP.

    * China has invested at least $900 billion (£635 billion) in projects along the belt and road, mainly in infrastructure, transport, and energy. These include a gas pipeline in Pakistan, a motorway in Hungary, and a high-speed rail link in Thailand.

    * Countries that haven't joined Belt and Road have also profited from the mega-project — Western multinationals like General Electric and Caterpillar in the US, and DHL in Germany, have all signed trade agreements to build Belt and Road projects.

    * Belt and Road is a pet project of Chinese President Xi Jinping, the country's most powerful leader since the founding of modern China. Officials looking to curry favour with Xi reportedly cite Belt and Road to get projects approved.

    * Britain isn't part of Belt and Road, and its stance is unclear. Prior to her trip to China, UK Prime Minister Theresa May refused to formally endorse the project, and said it would only contribute to global growth if it was "well implemented"...

    * ... while Chancellor Philip Hammond has appeared keen for Britain to join Belt and Road. Speaking in China last December, he expressed his wish for "closer collaboration in delivering the ambitions of the Belt and Road programme."

    * The US isn't a part of Belt and Road, but formally recognised it in a statement last May following the signing of a bilateral trade deal.

    * Belt and Road also has its critics. Although India is part of the programme, it opposes China's investment in an economic corridor linking it to Pakistan because it passes through Kashmir, a contested territory between the two countries.

    * Other countries say Belt and Road is actually a series of exclusive bilateral deals between China and other economies, but is touted as a multilateral project. If true, this would violate EU standards.

    * China's ambitions appear to go even beyond Asia, Europe, Africa, and Oceania. Last week, the country announced plans for a "Polar Silk Road," which aims to build infrastructure and explore shipping routes across the Arctic.

    * In 2016, China also established the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, an international development bank to help build infrastructure in region — almost like the Asia-Pacific equivalent of the IMF. The UK, Germany, and France all joined despite the Obama administration warning its allies not to....

China's Former Internet Czar Lu Wei Pleads Guilty to Bribery (19 Oct.)

Lu is charged with accepting money and property worth more than $4.6 million.

China’s state news agency Xinhua announced that Lu Wei, China’s former internet czar, went on trial on October 19 at the Intermediate People’s Court of Ningbo in Zhejiang province. According to Xinhua, Lu pleaded guilty to bribery in court.

In front of “60 people including national and local legislators, political advisors, press and members of the public,” Lu “made a final statement, pleaded guilty and expressed remorse in court,” Xinhua said. “The verdict will be announced in due course.”

As The Diplomat has been closely following, China established the Office of the Central Leading Group for Cyberspace Affairs, or the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) in 2014. Lu was appointed as the first director of the office. The CAC functions both as a government organ and a Party organ; this made Lu extremely powerful over China’s internet industry. He was thus called China’s internet czar. For example, most U.S. internet industry leaders, including Apple chief executive Tim Cook and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, had conducted high-profile meetings with Lu, in an attempt to charm the Chinese government.
