Default Mega Millions Jackpot Is Nothing But Another Tax ....

Lotteries essentially target and encourage lower-income individuals into a cycle that directly prevents them from improving their financial status and leverages their desire to escape poverty. Yes, that’s a bit harsh, and yes, people have the right to make their own decisions. Even bad ones… Also, many people tend to significantly overestimate the odds of winning because we tend to assess the likelihood of an event occurring based on how frequently we hear about it happening. The technical name for this is the Availability Heuristic, which means the more we hear about big winners in the press, the less uncommon a big payday begins to seem."

I agree with you and rarely play the lottery except when it gets ridiculously high, like now. What appeals to me is not being rich since I am in so many ways already (outside of money) but what good I could do with that much money. I think 2 dollars is worth the chance to win 1.6 billion dollars. If I win, not only will I show the world’s elite how much fun it is to give almost all of it away and not only will I use that money to start companies that will change the world but Project Avalon will be getting a large chunk of change, too. 😁

30 years ago I had a buddy who went to Vegas and lost over 1 mil, it isn't just the low income. The casino wouldn't let him leave until the debt was paid, lol.

The reality is somebody is going to win and that's the dream that at least you have a shot. This morning they said on the mega millions drawing nobody won so the next drawing will be 1.6 billion, but 15 people did win 1 mil each on this drawing, that would be a nice bump in life wouldn't it. I just came from the store after buying a sandwich and bought a few lottery tickets because now my hat is in the ring, thou a slim chance, there is still a chance and for $10.00 why not.

I do know 2 people who have won the lotto over the past 25 years, 1 guy blew all the cash(7 mil) and the other couple lived within their means comfortably. I suppose you can take other views about the system, revolt ect, ect. And I know people who have left the system as well. For me the lottery is just that, a lottery, a chance. Gambling has been around forever, cards, football pools, bingo . Its really a form of entertainment, to dream for a few moments of the what if I won. Yes you have people that are addicts, low income and yes high income , my neighbors next door to me lost their last house due to gambling. Some human beings have bad habits and that's that, no other excuse, and it wouldn't matter how much money was given to them, because they will blow it all eventually.

As for the lottery preventing individuals from improving their financial status ? Remember when Oprah took 100 families and gave them the opportunity if they went to college and graduated she would give them a house for free. I think 2 families made it thru that. Or just recently here in Detroit they had an apprenticeship program in skilled labor, starting pay was great, over 600 applied, half didn't have drivers licenses and half didn't pass a drug test, one guy said he could make more money selling drugs than working, only 3 made it thru. So going back to the original comment, nope, all hot air and what am I going to do now on a Saturday? go back to work and make some money respectively and be productive so I indeed have the means and resources to give back when appropriate and just live life .

If I did win, I would strategically give most of that money away where the impact made the most for communities in small towns, church's, food kitchens, scholarships, animal welfare, and certain humanitarian efforts overseas. It would probably take the rest of my life in doing so, but what a mission that would be to have been blessed with that gift.

That is not really the problem.

Everyone has a skill set. Not everyone can be a doctor, lawyer, plummer, or whatever. Economics is a skill set. Everyone needs money to survive in this world, but not everyone has the skill set in economics, actually most people don't. We see that reflected in our society. Any system that we use that involves money is an unfair system because there is only a small % of people that can thrive in this system.

It is not Lotteries that are the problem, they are just one aspect of our economic system which is the real problem.

There was once a guy who for some reason was able to have a conversation with God.

Guy: Hey god what's a million years to you?

God: Oh its about a second.

Guy: Well, what's a billion dollar to you?

God: Oh, its about a penny

Guy: Well how about giving me one of your pennies?

    God:... Oh just a second

I agree. It is a tax, but it's a voluntary tax, so I have no problem with it.

It's the involuntary taxes that are evil.

I understand that some people can handle finances better than others. It is a shame that basic, common sense management of money, as well as priority setting isn't taught in all schools.

It is not really about teaching it is schools either. If your not interested in the subject your not going to learn it very well. Case in point, when I was in college for computer networking, which I enjoyed at the time, I just could not get into programming. I wanted to but my mind just isn't build to problem solve like that. It is not because I am not smart enough (at the time my IQ was tested at 135 ), so it is not about being smart enough.

We all have certain skill sets, regardless of our intelligence level, that let us thrive at different things and other things we just can't do very well.

I think in some cases it is more than that. How about lotteries for political advancement?

A lot of people in Sweden, Netherlands and other countries are unaware their money is used for mala fide practices and political advancement.
