Default Hawaiian Sovereignty, Mauna Kea Sacred Ground and the New Observatory Controversy

The twin telescopes at the W.M. Keck Observatory are the largest optical and infrared telescopes in the world, according to the observatory's website. Because of the size and location of the telescopes, they are in high demand among professional astronomers. (The observatory is not open to the public.) Keck has participated in several notable discoveries.

The observatory is located atop Mauna Kea, a dormant volcano in Hawaii. Because it is so near the equator, Mauna Kea makes an excellent astronomical observation site.

"In the middle of the Pacific Ocean, Hawaii Island is surrounded by thousands of miles of thermally stable seas," the Keck Observatory wrote on its website. "The 13,796-foot Mauna Kea summit has no nearby mountain ranges to roil the upper atmosphere. Few city lights pollute Hawaiian night skies, and for most of the year, the atmosphere above Mauna Kea is clear, calm and dry."

Both telescopes, named Keck I and Keck II, measure 10 meters (32.8 feet) across. The mirrors for each telescope are made of 36 lightweight segments that work together similarly to a single mirror. The telescopes are housed in insulated domes of 700,000 cubic feet. Giant air conditioners run all day to keep the temperature at or below freezing. This helps reduce deformation of the telescopes' steel and mirrors, according to the Keck website.
The primary mirror assembly of the 10-meter Keck II telescope is made of 36 parts that can adapt to atmospheric conditions.

Exclamation Re: Hawaiian Sovereignty, Mauna Kea Sacred Ground and the New Observatory Controversy

Protest action at a sacred landmark in Hawai'i is ramping up again following the commencement of a controversial building project. Protesters are blocking access to Mauna Kea in an attempt to stop the erection of giant 30-metre telescope on the sacred site. Reporter Whatitiri Te Wake spoke with Kānaka Māoli here in NZ, who stand in solidarity with their families in Hawai'i.

My time at Mauna Kea has inspired me in such a powerful way that, for me, I was able to express through my music. Kumu Hinaleimoana joined me on this journey. She listened to my melody and wrote my mana’o that helped me to express what I truly feel inside. Everything here was captured by my truly talented friend, Antonio while on this quest. I am so grateful for the opportunity I had to visit Mauna Kea and owe it to another dear friend, Kumu Nāpua, for urging me to follow my na’au and GO TO THE MAUNA! I hope this mele uplifts the hearts of my ‘Ohana, Lāhui, and warriors fighting every single day throughout our entire pae ‘āina. Continue the fight in love! Eō!

    This is planned:

    ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.......

    Mauna Kea....today....

Mauna Kea, is a dormant volcano on the island of Hawaii. Standing 4,207 m (13,802 ft) above sea level, its peak is the highest point in the state of Hawaii. Most of the mountain is underwater; when measured from its oceanic base, Mauna Kea is over 10,000 m (33,000 ft) tall and is the tallest mountain on Earth.

Mauna Kea is about a million years old, and has thus passed the most active shield stage of life hundreds of thousands of years ago. In its current post-shield state, its lava is more viscous, resulting in a steeper profile. Late volcanism has also given it a much rougher appearance than its neighboring volcanoes; contributing factors include the construction of cinder cones, the decentralization of its rift zones, the glaciation on its peak, and the weathering effects of the prevailing trade winds. Mauna Kea last erupted 6,000 to 4,000 years ago and is now considered dormant.

In Hawaiian mythology, the peaks of the island of Hawaii are sacred. An ancient law allowed only high-ranking aliʻi to visit its peak.

Since the creation of an access road in 1964, thirteen telescopes funded by eleven countries have been constructed at the summit.

The Mauna Kea Observatories are used for scientific research across the electromagnetic spectrum and comprise the largest such facility in the world.

Their construction on a landscape considered sacred by Native Hawaiians, the Polynesians and others, continues to be a topic of debate on how the cultur and spiritual connection of native people to their sacred places should be respected.

    MAUNA KEA

historians say the single-word version is actually short for Mauna a Wakea, the mountain's original name.

“Wakea,”sometimes translated as “Sky Father,” is considered the father of the Hawaiian people. In ancient times, the mountain’s summit was considered the realm of the gods.

It was kapu ― a forbidden place ― for all but the highest chiefs and priests.

For the most part, the crowded nature of Mauna Kea's summit is what's behind the conflict.

For much of the indigenous population in Hawaii, sacredness is not just a concept ― it’s a feeling of connectedness with nature and spirit, particularly when it comes to Mauna Kea.

“They have not listened to the Hawaiian people and the cries that this is a sacred mountain,” said Ritte. “They think that this is a scientific mountain and they have every right to do what they’re doing and the Hawaiians are saying no this is a sacred mountain.

Go do your science, but don’t do it on our sacred mountain.

In March of 2016, they selected La Palma in the Canary Islands as an alternative site, as a contested case hearing got underway. Those lasted into 2017.

But the Hawaii Supreme Court overruled all legal opposition to the project in October of last year. In June, the state issued the project the “notice to proceed.”

The very next day, prayer altars that had been erected on the mountain were taken down.

“They were removed because they were located right where TMT is going to be constructed, so they had to be removed,” Hawaii Attorney General Clare Connors said.

One person was arrested in that incident, and we began to see the temperature gauge rise again.

Then came the announcement that construction will begin July 15th-2019....

“We’re not against TMT. We’re not against them building it. What we’re against is them building it in this particular area, on this particular mountain,” said activist Kahookahi Kanuha, during a 2015 protest. “It should go to a place where the people of that place want it.”

“We have to draw the lines in the sand, say no, no more already,” telescope opponent Walter Ritte said. “You already have 13 telescopes, and now you’re going to put a giant one up there. This is the beginning of another Waikiki up our sacred mountain.”
