    Default Quadriplegic needs advice.

For those who know me from my time line thread in witness,
I have been involved in a stupid accident last Aug 27 th that has left me now a quadriplegic.
I fell while trying to sit in a hammock. Dislocating vertebrae C 6 + C 7, pinching my spine.

My doctor as well as a lot of the therapist give me high hopes that I will be able to walk again as soon as the bruising and swelling has healed they have said anywhere from five weeks on after 2 years.

I've run into a few problems in that I know the first 6 months is crucial to get as much therapy in as possible and that my body will stand however I've run into problems with insurances sending me home already, and even when I was in therapy a lot of the equipment I was not allowed to use because of my weight. I'm simply asking here for those of you that know anything about the equipment for Spinal Care Rehabilitation that can think of ways to do this at home such as FES bikes, exoskeletons and that treadmill thing I think they call it the eye care. Ways to get or build similar things here at home not sure how.

I would also like to know of any medical things that would help my spine to heal quicker and more fully so far the only thing I've heard about is a edible mushroom called lion's mane.

I'm at home now since the 26th of December, but it's hard for me to sit here with no ability to get in my bathroom or bedroom I'm basically stuck here in the living room and kitchen and don't even have a wheelchair van yet although my mom is going to look at 1 on Wednesday. I know unless I lose a hundred pounds, I still won't get the type of therapy I need to be getting me walking again, and sitting in a chair not being able to do anything kind of sucks. So any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

    Oh Kari Lynn,

So sorry to hear about your problems and hope you find the answers/equipment that you need. I guess tackling weight is the only thing you can control on your own at this point. It's going to be tough as being so limited physically one of your few sources of comfort is likely food.

Give the weight loss your best shot and try not to get discouraged if you backslide!

Saw this and thought it might be great for you . And it is about a person who cannot move at all . There are lots of exercises for people in your type of situation but I would get specialist advice from a seasoned professional . Plenty of internet guidance available .
Good luck and keep strong . Like an iron vice .

I’m a C-1 quad so I have no movement at all and i have just shaved 7cms off my tummy measurement in 4weeks from diet alone, eating healthy reasonable portion size meals, I have cut out sweets including biscuits, cakes, ice cream chips and chocolate only having the occasional piece of dark chocolate. it’s all about self control, if you want to lose weight you have to be committed. after you lose the weight you want to lose you can have the cheeky biscuit or piece of cake, just remember weight loss is 90% Diet 10% exercise. good luck, also all I drink is water apart from black coffee, soft drink is your biggest enemy.

For cutting the appetite, there is a new product called Ozempic. With me it works wonderswithout any shaking as other poducts would have as side effect.

It is under prescription, check with your insurance if they would pay it, because it is expensive

Just a really tough situation for you and my best wishes. I wonder if you know about Dr. Joe Dispenza? https://drjoedispenza.com/

Dr. Joe was injured in a bike accident and had spinal fractures (though he was not a quadriplegic and if there is the possibility your spine can regenerate its nerve transmission ability, perhaps you are only temporarily paralyzed?). He used meditation and his knowledge of how the spine should be to heal which sent him on a life time of pushing the boundaries of what is possible.

There are many free youtube interviews with him, books on tape (audible is one source) and here is one free commentary of Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself

also the meditations he created are read here by lovely youtube posters:

You have lots of time now to absorb new information and allow this NEW understanding to condition a new pathway in your brain. Now you have the time to use the information and experience the effect of practicing the meditations daily.

On the numerous youtube interviews you can find, he has so many examples of healing what used to be considered permanent conditions. This is an exceptional opportunity for you to make a leap IMO. I am excited for you as your journey may lead to being what Joe calls Supernatural? Maggie

Same issue. Coffee kills my appetite but ends up throwing me into the shakes later in the day. And only one thing helps with the shaking...eating! So there is a rebound lowering of blood sugar that goes along with most of these weight loss wonders that involves the adrenals and action on the pancrease.

Sorry for your situation. My mother had a sciatica attack and was in a wheelchair for a few months...I ended up rupturing my neck disks lifting her into and out of cars. .and oddly I could not move my left arms and was in agony.

I employed an Osteopath trained in Cranial Sacral therapy and was 80% improved after one session. You can find one through the Upledger institute. I was also placed on TENS device which is small electrical impulses which was also useful in healing. I also had 5 visits to a chiropractic decompression clinic which basically stretches your spine relieving pressure...By far Cracio sacral therapy proved the most effective.

Good luck for a speedy recovery!

I wonder if someone could get you this medicine:

    Wobenzym or equivalent.
It consists of high quality pancreatine, papain and bromelain and supplementary rutin, first 3 of which are very efficient in breaking fats and assisting metabolic process.
The preparation is highly recommended for non-invasive treatment of arthritis, and post traumatic injuries of all kinds including spinal injuries.

It’s completely natural and helpful for anyone suffering from slow metabolism, any kind of lethargic organ function, diabetes, obesity and so and so forth, recommended for all kinds of inflammatory conditions,
and of taken in sufficient doses it works very fast.

It’s a patented product ( approved by FDA) even though there are cheaper alternatives available, it works miracles. No matter whether you eat or how much you eat but breaking elevated lipids in the system that obstruct healing is important,
it eventually brings fast relief and decrease of PAIN ( it acts as natural painkiller)
    and eases many symptoms.

The only thing with it is the cost of correct dosage which in case of serious injury and overweight is at least 6-18 tablets of bromelain-papain-pancreatine a day divided to 3 doses , that is supportive to the metabolism “as it goes” and it’s to be taken for several weeks to several months or as required by the patient.

I’d still go for it, compared to all those other medications and therapies it’s not a disaster to your pocket and should be available in pharmacy or ordered online.

Most importantly, it’s natural but very efficient, not a placebo. Please check the reviews.

With many prayers for your recovery

In order to lose weight after a stroke 4 years ago I started single day waterfasts. I also became a vegetarian. The trick with the waterfast is you don't eat for 24 hours after a dinner, only drinking water when hunger arises. Then, in the evening at the end of the fast you drink juices, usually fruit or vegetable. Next day normal diet resumes.

Regular exercise routine daily is important. I used tai chi. And meditation. Good luck.

Yes. @Kari Lynn: Do please consult a good chiropractor. They know a LOT more than the vast majority of doctors (and even many osteopaths) do about back problems.

If you never for a moment let go of a positive outlook for a fast recovery, that combined with a good chiro could have you back on your feet sooner than many others might ever believe.

NEVER buy into others' pessimism or (even well-meaning) discouragement. Well-meaning discouragement can come in many disguises, such as those close to you helpfully counseling you to 'come to terms with it'. The very best thing you can do for yourself is simply to prove them all wrong.

    Kari Lynn
I would suggest you start with an easily and quickly implementable, cheap solution - Magnets. It might work or might not in your situation. If I were in your situation, that's what I would do immediately while evaluating other alternatives.
I have seen it yield positive results in sport injury. I don't know how transferable the solution is to your case, but based on the science behind it, you should get some result.
Without getting into the deep science behind magnet therapy, the basic idea is when a body part is inflamed (which is your case, vertebrae 6&7 and spine) and the injury is not too deep but close to the surface (which is your case), the first thing to try is magnets.
The big advantages are, it's cheap (max $30 to $40), it has absolutely no side effects (if properly used), it is synergistic with all the suggestions already made above (supplements, meditations, etc...)
If interested, post back and I'll give info on the type of magnets you need to buy and how to use them.

Thank you all for your responses. I will certainly look into each and every one of them. God knows I will have the time to do so now.

I have heard of Joe dispenza. He has a book or two I would like to read.

And thank you Bill and CurEus, I do have a chiropractor that my husband and I have used before I'm just a little nervous about having them work on my neck right now. Maybe he could find a way around that.

I also know what you mean about well-meaning negativity, I saw that a lot at Madonna. They were constantly prepping me for a life in a wheelchair. And when I would bring up something that my mother's chemist doctor said I needed in large doses they would tell me if that really worked he'd be out of his wheelchair already. When I went to QLI it was like a whole other world. All the patients and even some of the nursing assistants would tell me it's your turn to walk next. I love them for that and I wish I didn't have to come home from there but insurance quit paying so they had to send me home.

I did get to use a TENS machine, but it didn't seem strong enough compared to the FES bike. The tens helped my hands and fingers to get movement and separation. so I can play guitar now and violin. But the FES bike seem to work better on the big muscles of my legs and bum.

My injury is considered incomplete and the Asia Test shows me to be down to T6 and 7 I think because I seem to be able to move my arms and hands very well. but that took about a month of work.

I'm curious if there might be a secondary injury to my spine as I had a dream that I did at about the waistline.
I'm wondering if perhaps I should have the doctor look into it. Or at least asked if he took a CT scan of my full spine.

I really don't have any problem with my appetite, I'm sure the meds that I'm on will prevent that lot of stuff tastes pretty nasty. I can't eat chocolate anymore of all things chocolate! Peanut butter taste bad. And most Meats accept chicken taste bad as well as the gravy made from them so I'm trying to eat as much protein as I can but it's kind of hard to do. Milk also is pretty hard to drink, but I do still like yogurt with a ton of fruit in it and granola. So you think it would be easy for me to lose weight, but yet I'm gaining. I may have to start counting calories. I am trying to replace the high calorie snacks for fruit which I enjoy more anyways. Hopefully that'll help but it all takes time.

The meds you suggested I will look into I do have to be careful though with the drugs that I am already taken. I would like to get off of them all. But I'm a pansy when it comes to pain.

again thank you all. Now if only somebody could tell me how to build an exoskeleton I'd be all set. LOL

I was glad to hear you mention Lion's Mane mushroom. Other healing modalities will help overall healing in other ways, but this mushroom has a substance that makes the body produce nerve growth factor (something infants have plenty of, but adults have very little of.) The nerve growth factor, in turn, enables healing of the myelin sheath around nerves. I can attest that it is effective, noticeably effective, within weeks of taking it. It certainly isn't a magic bullet for all that you're going through, so other modalities need to be included, but for nerve repair you're shopping in the correct aisle.

    {edit, to add: I buy from MushroomHarvest.com, and recommend them for quality and price.}

Oh I forgot about the magnets, I will look into that but strangely enough I do have full sensation right down to my toenails, I just can't make my legs move. The funny thing is in the spine the closest part of it controls the sensation of feeling. The part that controls movement is deeper in the spine. You think being deeper it would be more protected and I'd be easier to lose feeling then movement but for me it's just the opposite. Perhaps magnets will work if they are lay down my spine? I will try anything to get these legs to move again or at least to be able to stand.

You remember those baby walkers or bouncers? I'm wondering if I could build something like that adult size? Get like maybe a climbing harness, that's what they use for the Eyecare hung from the ceiling.

Thanks for that info, Dennis! I have fibromyalgia, a painful condition caused in part by the breaking down of the myelin sheath, so I will have to try Lion's Mane.
Coincidentally, just before I saw this post, I was pouring a tea I made today of dried Reishi mushroom into my brew of mixed herbal teas.
I order my herbs online from Mountain ROse or Starwest Botanicals.

It certainly isn't a magic bullet for all that you're going through, so other modalities need to be included, but for nerve repair you're shopping in the correct aisle.

    {edit, to add: I buy from MushroomHarvest.com, and recommend them for quality and price.}

Thank you Dennis everything that I had been reading up on this shows that it heals up to 40% faster but that was only test done on rats. I wonder how much would be considered a high dose for humans?

Thanks for that info, Dennis! I have fibromyalgia, a painful condition caused in part by the breaking down of the myelin sheath, so I will have to try Lion's Mane.
Coincidentally, just before I saw this post, I was pouring a tea I made today of dried Reishi mushroom into my brew of mixed herbal teas.
I order my herbs online from Mountain ROse or Starwest Botanicals.
I to have fibromyalgia. I often wondered if that's what's causing my injuries so much longer to heal?

Probably. FM is a bitch! The worst thing is that it hurts to exercise, but you have to in order to feel better, and to get those endorphins working.
I used to have a friend who had a mat that was embedded with magnets that felt really good to lie on.
I've been getting some relief from a mini Bio-Mat, which is embedded with tourmaline and amethyst, emits negative ions and infrared heat.
What I would love would be to have a warm, bubbly hot Jacuzzi with ozonated water big enough that I could do my exercises in.
So much easier to exercise when your weight is supported by water, while being gently massaged by jets of water.

    I take a tablespoon a day. If I remember correctly, that's 6000mg.

You definitely don't want to be diagnosed by "Dr. Google", and I hope you can find a local D.O. to guide you through this healing process.

Natalie, I'll check your sources too, but $34/lb for US-grown organic bioavailable Lion's Mane powder is hard to beat.
