The $36 rate does not apply everyday. I think it is $99 on weekends. Still the hotel is quite reasonable. I think they are counting on people to drop money in the slot machines.

If you find a roomate here on Avalon, you can cut your hotel cost in half.
I checked with Expedia.ca for flight and this hotel - booking directly is always more expensive. this is how I got that price, now, it may change as you say. Airbnb is not a bad idea at all, as long as nobody snors (teasing).

I checked around AIRBNB on my phone. I set the guest count at 10, just to be safe.

We could get a pretty damn nice house for 300 or less per night, which is a BARGAIN. One of them is right on the river, next to a mesa. Sounds nice.

I like the idea of renting a house if others are open....maybe we can find one that's large enough where we wouldn't have to rent a room for all of us to gather, but rather use the house as our location?

Ok so who's bringing the 3rd generation night goggles? lol

    EDIT TO ADD:
This is just an idea of what might be out there:

Whoever is driving could maybe bring as many outdoor chairs as possible? If I drive I could probably bring about 4 to 5 camping chairs.
I am planning to drive as well, so I can bring chairs.. Some of the houses available in the area are really nice with outside pool side seating.. I will bring chairs if this is what we all decide on. I was thinking the same thing! I have a double room reserved already, just in case someone else is unable to find a "Spot" but I have until about a week before the event to cancel. If we do this other option, we better get it together! I will open this post daily to see what everyone egrees on. If we make it too complicated it may collapse. I LOVE the house idea.

Yeah, AirBnB would be the better option, imo. We can all pitch in and rent a house for about the same price per person. And with a kitchen, we could all make communal meals, even. We could bond and be economical!
I agree that we can somehow get everyone there that wants to go, without breaking the bank. I plan to drive, 617 miles, and then get my room and the show, and I felt if I got a room that can hold two, it may help someone else... And I can help to shuttle people as well, if need be. The nice thing about all of us considering going is we have a support network here, because we behave as family .. And that's rare.. If need be, I can take a route that takes me past the airport and grab a few people in my car, on the way there, then take them back as I head home. I am in Northern California so it doesn't matter which route I take to get there.. Whatever works. I am going more to meet my peers, rather than the information... So if this works out, all the better...

If Truman Cash doesn't drive down to meet me, then I'll probably fly and I might take you up on a ride from the airport. I'm more coming for the comradery of Avalon members than the convention. As much as I'd love to attend the convention, I don't know if I can take all those days off combined with the expense. I haven't figured the route if we drive, maybe we can meet you somewhere and drive together? Let's keep in touch!

I just wanted to add something else to the conversation. They did have some opportunities for people to volunteer to help at the event. I believe you don't have to pay for the events, just your room and travel... if you volunteer. Of course this means you can't pick the speakers you hear or see, but it may also help others to get there.. ESPECIALLY IF IT IS THE AFTER HOUR ACTIVITIES THAT YOU WERE COMING FOR.. I am not sure if they're still needing help but it couldn't hurt to check into it.

I'm so jealous. Back in 2000, I was on Usenet as a member of the AC/DC newsgroup. We organized a weekend such that a bunch of fans from all over the world made our way to Philadelphia for the 2nd last concert of that tour. Folks flew/train/drove to Philly from all over N. America, Canada, and Europe (I met Angus after the gig). Then, in 2003, the same bunch of fans converged on Toronto for Sarsfest (AC/DC, Rolling Stones, Rush, etc)....I had 2 people crashing on my couch and living room floor for that one.

For those of you that are going....trust me when I say this.....making your way to a foreign country/city to meet up some some good friends you found on the internet can be rather daunting (at first)....but by time you leave you will be so happy that you did it. It's quite the rush!!

    So jealous!!

Ok Canadians.....if I end up driving, you could always fly into Boise, crash at my place for a night, before we head out for the long drive. Not sure if that would help anyone by saving on flight costs, but wanted to offer. I've made no firm plans yet.

EDIT TO ADD: Oh great, looking at the driving route now...one of the roads is called, The Loneliest Road in America..........you've been warned....lmao.

    That's my take.

I would never put the effort forth for the conference I'm in it for the Avalon deal.

I love what everyone is doing with the house idea and all, but my kids and wife are going to go with me, so we are going to have our own hotel room and such, other wise I would be all for the house idea, chats until the wee hours of the night, sounds absolutely fantastic.

Asking questions and posting online here at Avalon is one thing...but doing it face to face just brings it to a whole 'nother level. I can only imagine the juicy tidbits. I'll say it again, you folks will feel invigorated having made the trip and it will be something you will remember for the rest of your lives.

Just accepted a small contract for 6 months (not much money, but hey, some bills will be paid).

Therefore, I will definitely not be able to go. Soooo sorry, I would have loved it.

Continuing to think aloud here, and a bit more clarity re scheduling. (If it helps!)

The main week-long UFO conference ends late on the Saturday night, 30 March. So Avalonians are welcome to arrive that evening (or earlier, of course!), and we'd all kick off doing our own thing after breakfast on Sunday 31 March, maybe 10 am in case anyone's traveled long distances the previous day.

We'd draw things to a close on on Tuesday evening 2 April. Exactly how we'll schedule things, I have no clear idea yet — but I'd be certain 3 days would pass quickly. The more people there, the more so, for sure, and we could easily just decide things between us as we go.

I do have a lot of things to share, as you may imagine... including (e.g.) some bits and pieces of interesting material I've not wanted to post over the net. And just as there as many Avalon discussion threads with many members contributing, there's nothing to stop that all happening similarly in live conversation. We could easily open up 'threads' as live topics, as proposed and opened by anyone there. I'd certainly not want to hog things — this is definitely not all about me! — but I'm pretty sure that if I'm well-supported by coffee and cookies, I could talk for a very long time all on my own, really quite easily. Filling three days with interesting stuff would never be a problem.

I'd very likely be heading back home on Wednesday morning 3 April. It'd be tempting to go on a road trip (thanks for the invites! ), but I simply can't be away for too long. 2 weeks is about the limit, (1) for Mara the — we've never been separated, so my being away for that time may be really very stressful for her — and (2) I live close to the middle of nowhere, so while my farmer neighbors are all friendly and pleasant, security is a potential issue as word would quickly spread about the empty house.

Thinking even more creatively: if this all works as well as I think it could, we could certainly do another event next year, with a lot more time to plan and make personal arrangements. It's an interesting experiment for us all.

I initially clicked "I really doubt if I can make it, but it may be possible." but it is beginning to look more like a possibility.

Like many of you, I would also come to see MEGAUFO Con, in my case, the last four days. Bill, I saw you on the roster but not on the schedule. Hopefully your talk will be in one of the last four days!

I like the idea of getting a house, although it presents one logistical problem. It will probably not house all of us and the rest of us will probably be staying in the Aquarius Hotel. Unless there are a lot of people who bring cars and are willing to chauffer, it means many taxi rides back and forth. One option would be to book the "Majestic Suite" (click on link and then "Suites" and then "Majestic Suite") which would provide a place for Bill to sleep and the rest of us to congregate. (Looks like it has room for more than just Majestic Twelve to meet in.)

Also, since many of us will be there for the conference, we can network and possibly congregate at meal times and other times before the official Avalon Conference begins.

I should know by the end of the month whether this is a go or not for me!!!

One solution to both problems, (I feel like a man, proposing solutions re: other thread), problem one: Mara's emotional distress to being baby sat, problem two: potential thiefs, well one solution would be to have Mara baby sat at your home with a trusted baby sitter. If at all possible.

I am in a caregiving situation plus have four cats so it’s not easy for me to get away on relatively short notice. However, it sounds really interesting and is the sort of thing I’ve done in the past.

The beauty of staying at the hotel while attending the conference is that it’s usually all under one roof—makes it convenient to move back and forth from your room, the conference, meals etc.

I’ve attended conferences on my own and always meet up with interesting people while I’m there. There are people who attend with a group and stick to that circle of people, but there will be others who’ve come on their own and will be happy to strike up a conversation with you. It helps that you have that common interest in alternative subjects.

I noticed that Mary Rodwell is speaking on the Monday of the conference. She’s worth a listen if you plan to attend all seven days. I’m wondering if they’ll have her put on an Experiencer workshop as well as she does offer that at some conferences in addition to her presentation.

    Hey Bill,

Just wanted to propose another idea....there's a gal by the name of Melinda Leslie doing sky watching events in the evening...Since our group might be rather large, maybe she would stay a day longer to accommodate our entire group so we could all go out together? Any way you might contact her, identifying yourself as a speaker and ask? She states they have 50 pairs of goggles. The challenge will be getting enough chairs.

If you guys think a suite idea works better, I'm fine with that too.

I am asking Melinda now how much it would cost us to do such a thing, and how many she usually has in her groups, and whether or not she would even be able to stay another day and do such a thing... I will let you all know what she says.
