What a good idea to declutter my home, touching everything and getting rid of things not giving me joy.

    What gives me joy:

    My daughter
    Seeing someone laugh
Seeing a baby, or holding one
    Having a deep conversation
    The sea
    Swimming
    A warm sunny day
Feeling love (for or from someone, for or from nature, for or from myself)
My house (it will be difficult to sell. Which I must do)
    Creating something new
Your daughter gives your life so much meaning and substance, Flash. It comes through over and over. I am so happy you have each other. You're both really blessed.

I consider joy to be a sublime state of peace and contentment, inherently transitory considering the nature of the world. So my list is of moments and what brings joy to the surface in a manner that is remarkable.

Playing with or talking with my children
Speaking with others about what is important to them
Being present in nature with a loved one
    Being present in nature alone
    Driving long distances
    Being surrounded by extended family
    Being present with my partner
Writing an engrossing tale or essay
    Reading a good story
Watching a good movie or TV series
Being alone and present to the moment
Being in a gigantic crowd and anonymous
    Loving anything and anyone

Goodness, how much time do you have? As my wife just passes by and gives a little kiss on the back of my neck, that’s the first thing that comes to mind.
I learned a long time ago I could create my daily reality so I created a day full of the things that give me the greatest joy. I am a contractor/carpenter/craftsman so I spend most days making really cool things with my own two hands. I love teaching my favorite game (soccer) so my second “job” is coaching for the local club. I get paid which is really cool because I should be paying them. Haha. I only coach 10-12-year-olds, the best ages in my opinion because they’re little sponges. I have training or games 3/4 days a week most of the year. I spend the rest of my time either with my wonderful kids and wife or reading or playing with our two dogs, just hanging around the house. In other words, it’s the simple everyday things that give me the most joy.
This list would change with age I think. When I was younger and living all over the world different things gave me joy for sure.

This thread really hit a nerve. I grabbed a piece of paper and started making a detailed list of what gave me joy. I’d strongly encourage you all to do the same. It’s fun to do affirmations! I’m spinning.
My list of joys so far (in bad format to limit space):
Learning something new and exciting every day—an ice cold beer after a productive day—a puff off a nice pipe—a long ride to a socccer game or practice with my daughter and her friends—my wife lets the dogs out at 4am and lets me sleep—I finish a project on my honeydo house project list—a long walk in a beautiful place—watching a seed I nurture grow to a plant I eat or smoke—looking at my beautiful wife—watching a great movie—a beautiful sunset, sunrise or rainbow—seeing a hawk in the city—rescuing a bird or bunny from our cats—being able to visit Project Avalon every day religiously to maintain my sanity from the outside world—sharing foot rubs on the couch—watching a client experience pure joy with a project completed—watching a player I coach make huge improvements—winning the right way, as a consequence of good habits and compassion—seeing a new bird at our feeder—a great game of ping pong with my son(who always kicks my ass)—a clear night when you can see the stars really well—a full or bright moon—thunderstorms—snowstorms—sledding—solving a problem my wife thought was impossible—listening to my favorite songs—thoughts of a future on a beach driving a golf cart instead of a car—throwing frisbee. I could go on and on I think. Lol. I suppose Bill could sell this info to Facebook and the deep state and they’d know everything about me there is to know. Haha.

    A lovely thread. Thank you!

What sparks my joy? In a world where most interactions with other beings leaves one feeling adrift in a sea of mediocrity- the rare exchange wherein one recognizes the spark of understanding, intelligence and infinity in a kindred spirit- the realization that you are not alone and that there is hope for this race, albeit in a few.

Hi, Constance. There’s a lot but here are some favourites.

    Love, warm and kind people.
Seeing people thrive and doing what they love.
Stars, mountains, forests, lakes, and the ocean.
    Most animals.
    Flowers.
    My son, BF, friends.
My son’s laugh and his big bright eyes need a special mention.
Same with my BF’s lips and kisses.
    Our cat, Beethoven.
    Our new pasta bowls.
    My new green shorts.
Dolce and Gabbana’s Light Blue perfume.
Moreton Bay bugs, mangoes, strawberries, Red Tulip chocolate, a big tin of Roses chocolates.
    Books, music, film.
    Freddie Mercury, Jimi Hendrix.
    Anything extra dimensional.
    Stationary.
    Tea, strawberry champagne.
    Deep blue sky.
    Kayaking on calm waters.
    Babies, toddlers, elderly people.
    Dancing.
    My bed, falling asleep.

Excellent thread! Here are a few of my sparks:

    Sunlight on my face.
A nice breeze blowing through my hair.
    Being in nature.
    Jogging. (Preferably outdoors)
    Wildflowers.
Sandalwood, honeysuckle, lavender, patchouli.. the list of smells goes on and on.
    Making things.
    Synchronicities.
    Painting.
    Music.
    The mountains.
    A good book.
Finding a new “treasure.” (Rock, feather, cool piece of wood)
    Learning something new.
    Teaching someone something new.
Smiles on the faces of my loved ones.
    My German Shepard, Maia.
    Seeing a hawk.
Losing myself in the stars, the moon, clouds, the sky.
    Big fat snowflakes.
    Dancing flames.
Being aware that anything and everything that I think I know, could be false- and having the ability to throw those thoughts away as I gain new knowledge so I can form a new perspective.

    What gives me joy:

    My daughter
    Seeing someone laugh
Seeing a baby, or holding one
    Having a deep conversation
    The sea
    Swimming
    A warm sunny day
Feeling love (for or from someone, for or from nature, for or from myself)
My house (it will be difficult to sell. Which I must do)
    Creating something new
Your daughter gives your life so much meaning and substance, Flash. It comes through over and over. I am so happy you have each other. You're both really blessed.
    Wow, what a neat exercise!

I just realized that 2 great sources of joy I have will most probably be absent from my life next year, namely selling my house at some point and mostly my daughter going to university elsewhere (Switzerland or Ontario). Miss Switzerland (daughter) is coming back from Switzerland tomorrow.

I am eager to see her, I missed so much her slamming of the door in the morning, the creaking of the stairs when she goes up, the 'mom, I got to speak to you - or with you' and the drama queening!!! Of course, I also missed the nice heart and fun liking humourous girl she is. I will have neither around next year.... Scary!

    Gosh.... I've got to prepare!!

Other joys I have I may develop further:
    travelling
learning languages (I love to speak, someone once told me I would even learn Chinese in order to speak - of course this was a boyfriend or my generation)
skiing would be a great idea, as long as I have people to do it with
reading - this is ongoing anyhow
working for others growth, in whichever way
    animals
oh, developing dancing and singing, never truly did it, but I enjoy moving

what I do not like: aloness (solitude is fine, I need it at times, but feeling alone is difficult for me, I have been alone most of my life with responsibilities, no other adult to share with, while raising daughter, having my small cie, creating training material, and all,, it would be time for nicer co-sharing times with outstanding beings).

    Nice puzzle to solve

All of the above.....and I hesitated to even write here.

Interesting thread. I like that it has made me analyze myself this deeply in a different way, tho a topic I am acutely aware of. I don't know how far beyond myself I can expect the experience of joy, the joy that is the inherent, the causal nature of being, especially considering how fragile and disconnected from the human condition the times between the livings are, times that can be joyful in their own way.

Whatever, however, it has come to be this way, the lack of joy, the constant choices that so many people make not to be joyful.....which is what the state of being alive brings..... and the condition for my clan to even accept being in these bodies with all of these limitations...I see so many lives as wasting the time afforded for the experiences.

I can't complain when I can be of some use, (lend a set of ears, lend my skills, give my labor, write something insightful, remind people sometimes of their right, their choices, their abilities and the simplicity of seeing things easier, allowing the joy into their lives) and I do understand why it has come to this, yet it is very hard being around such a depth of manipulation from outside influences. If I do not know joy deeply I could not see those things that are it's counter, its absence. To live without joy is the deepest of illnesses.

For me personally, I do now see my ability to do some very different things, enduring way beyond the norm as a condition (funny saying that....deep health being a condition), as my coping mechanism, my adjustment for the cause, my agreement with myself, and not some self-centered indulgence, an insight I have when it comes to the deep inclination to help out. In health and the intense conditions of temporary injuries there is a wider constant of en-joyment.

When I go anywhere, to work, to shop, to study, to a movie, I have never got it why there is such a big disconnect. I cannot even begin to describe the depth of joy that living brings, and your posts confirm that. Why be in a body and not make it a good time, an interesting time, a conscious time to enjoy this all? Being one who has taken responsibility for my life, with it's limitations, doing so has often left me challenging the inhumanity alone, which makes for some wickedly humorous and sometimes joyful insights. In contrast, I'd repeat my gratitude for the joy that the connection here brings me. I am not alone here and for all of your humanities I find more than enough reasons for being in this condition.

It is your condition, this living, and in the worst of circumstances where pain is felt and it is not a result of your direct intention you still have a soulful, a heartfelt, a meaningful right, even a solemn duty to live joyfully, ....especially in contrast to whatever someone else has imposed upon you or dealt you.

I was talking to a great and insightful friend about joy and divine intervention, the one we all activate, whether we know it or not, and we talked about what we have done to those who have been cruel to us, primarily because we both, in our individual lives, choose to make joy a warriors' path.

In any position when we hire the weak we enjoy treating them the way we choose to be treated, never repeating the harm aimed at us. It is so cool watching them trying to adjust to the unequal power joy has over cruelty and of what an insistence on being treated fairly does to their lives, especially with the joy our presences choose to bring. We don't forget the offenses done to us, and we may joke with the offenders about what they so weakly tried to do to us, but we choose to not be offensive.

No weakness here and yes they can leave if they can't handle the good, the laughter, the intensity of focusing on being in a kick-ass team. The other side of this is we both have done some serious harm fighting, so no need, in most cases, to beat them down physically or emotionally, knowing that the good feeling of doing so doesn't last long. There are many reasons to follow the joy if we just look a little deeper.
    Conditionless, like breathing....

smiling seem to create sparks from everything. If I'm feeling low I just force myself to smile if that didnt work I try to find some reason to smile like going out and smiling at people and sparks of joy follow.

Being in wild/semi-wild natural settings, and being so immersed that I sort of disappear. "Joy" might not be the right word for this during the experience, as it is more sublime, but joy in recollection of those times, and joyous moments sprinkled into the experience.

Communicating with other (Earth animal) species, especially if wild.

    Hearing young children's laughter.

(This is part of my past, not current.) Physically experiencing some very fast-paced activity, faster than I can think, where it forces a Zen-like experience. (I don't know, maybe this is more a heightened "exhilaration" rather than "joy."

Some music evinces joy. Sometimes it is just a single note or a short phrase, (from a masterfully played cello or acoustic guitar or oboe or violin) and sometimes ensemble pieces or symphonic pieces.

Just about any nature film narrated by David Attenborough.

Constance, I didn't expect the video above to have such an impact on me. It was simply beautiful. Thanks.

Wow, seeing so many people reflecting on what makes them happy is a joyous thing in itself!

My list would be large because I find happiness in so many things.

    My family.
Seeing my kids first thing in the morning and kissing them goodnight. (And so much in between.)
My wife - my best friend.
    Music - listening. Drumming.
    Animals.

    ...so many things.
