Default Huge forum for questions related to the outdoors

I came across outdoors.stackexchange.com today, "Knife as defense against stray dogs" really caught my attention. Someone's been having some creepy close encounters (ref)

This website is very informative! Numerous people are telling them why it's not a good idea to fight a dog with a knife. The way I look at it, this advice could save somebody's life. I might have to get myself a big stick...

There's another related thread about hunting bears with a knife too (what a fun hobby! just joking lol)

    Hmm! yes a big stick.

Just wave it around in a playful way and as you throw it and say 'Fetch'

There is no defence really, unless your practiced in such dog matters, just don't panic and run.
Best bet give it something it can tussle and bite, then let it run off (hopefully)

Not sure if using a knife would really be that effective anyway ... people don't often realize that fur is armour. Bears can sometimes take shotgun blasts that don't even get through all the fur (likely bruises the hell out of them though).

Two steps ahead, and you are deemed a crackpot.

Knife may not be the best bet.

The U. P. S. idea is their clipboards. The metal case they carry it in, opens up into a big shield.

Last year I fought a couple of my neighbor's pit bulls. I was just going to use my hands, but, there turned out to be a piece of a frame of lawn furniture sitting there, and that worked great. Although it wasn't really life or death for me, it was a dog fight.

Dog's going to be like a shark or crocodile, better control that mouth, and since it's going to pounce, you'll need some aikido or something like that.

I would tend to look at it as, how not to make it attack you in the first place, but that won't help if we're talking rabid.
