Tonight I watched the most harrowing incidents about those who are paid to ‘delete’ contentious internet uploads on social media, from Manila. They have targets of up to 25,000 images per day.

Imagine if you have to watch the most hideous images on the internet all day every day? You are responsible for who sees whatever...?

They are damaged beyond belief, trying to have a ‘normal’ family life is virtually impossible. Suicide is an option, the ‘managers’ have the most pathetic excuses, the manipulators of public opinion are called to account.

Please, if anyone can upload this on my behalf, I would be so grateful. Put it in the library, this is so important about how we are being ‘directed’ in our opinions, locally and globally.

I'm having a play at the moment through this link: https://rlsbb.unblocked.krd/feed/ and trying a search on the following within the code I've found this file: storyville.the.internets.dirtiest.secrets.the.cleaners.2019.hdtv.x264-underbelly.mkv

I'm downloading this through rapidgator.net and should have this available in an hour or so.

BBC Storyville - The Internet's Dirtiest Secrets: The Cleaners

Sociopolitical Documentary hosted by Hans Block and Moritz Riesewieck, published by BBC broadcasted as part of BBC Storyville series in 2019 - English narration.
    ------------------------------
    Information
    ------------------------------
The Cleaners raises important questions for all of us who use these platforms daily without knowing what goes on behind the scenes: Who are these people that 'clean up' social media and what criteria do they operate by? Where does content moderation end and censorship begin? And what happens when their split-second decisions affect the lives of people in political hotspots like Myanmar or Istanbul?

I am so disturbed by this documentary that I don't quite know what to say. I just keep hearing these waves of "Oh my lord, what have we done?"

I highly recommend it based on what I have watched so far. But have a strong heart and stomach.

Let me be clear, while the pornography is just appalling, it's the grilling of the Senate Committee and the answers given by the executives that actually drove me to this post.

One of the most existential documentaries I have seen in a while.

Yes, highly highly recommended. It's harrowing, hard to watch, and deeply thought-provoking.

My wise, learned grandmother used to say that she'd never allow herself to be psychoanalyzed by anyone who didn't have the best qualities of Jesus and the Buddha combined.

The same may apply to those people making decisions about deleting content. They're young, sincere, doing their best, but absolutely not highly educated or widely experienced, and it's just a job.

They care, but what do they know about the world? About different cultures? Some of them are judging this content with zero context, and don't speak English.

I'd not trust myself to do what they're paid to do. 95% of clear-cut instances, maybe. But the other 5% may be open to a LOT of debate with no obvious answers in sight.

And do the math: they have to review 25,000 images a day. That's their quota. Even assuming a 10 hour day with no breaks, that's 25,000 images in 600 minutes. 40 images a minute, non-stop. One every 1.5 seconds. It'd be impossible for a super-being to make wise, informed decisions at that rapid-flick-through rate.

OK - so I've watched the film - Thanks Tintin, avid's op link unavailable in Aus. and....

    ...I'm not buying it.

I feel that the BBC's slick portrayal of these massive social media platform's content moderation is simplistic at best, and
    in all likelihood, completely inaccurate.

To suggest the ebb and flow of content and trends for the billions influenced by this information, is managed by algorithms
and a small army of devoted, basically moral but ultimately fallible Filipinos, albeit supervised,
    just beggars belief.

To be clear - I'm not questioning whether there are such characters (film's term in the end credits),
portrayed as they are as unwilling sin-eaters,
charged with the unenviable burden of absorbing and deleting humanity's depravity for us, like so many priests cloistered in
    digital confessionals.

There are some valid topics examined and given the situation in Christchurch, specifically regarding internet censorship,
the subject could not be more topical.

I do not partake of social media except if the only content source is platformed there - and with good reason.

I have witnessed in the past real time editing of controversial posts mid-post! as well as
intrusive, probing survey-style questions (directed at my daughter) that raised my hackles.

It's more than possible that I do not credit AI enough but I certainly ain't buying BBC's propaganda piece either.

I truly found that film interesting for many reasons, one being that it gives the soft side of censorship.

I am however absolutely sure that it does not go far at all, that it is much worse than what is described.

Just taking the censorship asked from the Turkish government for example.

They take Turkey as being the most censored country almost in the whole world. I do believe the Turkish government is asking for censorship, this is not the question.
The question is that censorship is put on a less important country (albeit important), so as to put the blame away from British and US or French (see Macron with the yellow vests) government that are far worse I would think.

Also, having teams of low educated Phillipinos, who cannot speak the languages they are listening to, doing the scrubbing is true, I have no doubts about this.
Phillipines is a mega center for all kinds of customer service centers - and here youtube is the customer. Low paid agents with no choice of work for survival.

    They do visual scrubbing.

But then who is asking for and who is doing the scrubbing for all verbal contents? Nobody will show this because it would put western governments and western agencies on the hot seat. re: Christchurch shooting for example.

Then, they tell us the damage done to poor countries with illiterate inhabitants where the social networks are the only source of information where all kinds of rumors are spread by anybody, against their government or against some ethnic groups, pushing ethnic wars, etc. True.

But it never tells you that CNN, ABC and BBC are not sources of true information either and are spreading rumors to a naive public too. Just see what happened with Ukrainian wars on occidental news.

As always, in manipulative endeaviours, truth are mixed with lies to confuse the mind and pull you away from the immediate falsehood right in front of your eyes.

On the other hand, so few people can read, analyse and have critical thinking, in the western world, that even this little info is better than nothing.

    - a side comment: Phillipinos are often very very religious. Living in such poverty with little hope for survival, I would become religious too.

So I am not surprised that they are told and do believe that they are saving the world with such scrubbing.

But they will never be helped when on the verge of suicide or when in deep depression after so much atrocities viewing on one hand.

On the other hand, one agent knew he was scrubbing off the iconic pic of the small Vietnamese girl during Vietnam war, but had to do it to follow policies. He knew he was changing history.

I was surprised to see that the Phillipines President is Muslim when the whole country has many catholics (86%) and 6% are other Christian faiths. How come?

Quote As he started his speech, Duterte also exalted Allah, whose goodness and greatness he said allowed the BOL to reach this stage.

“God must be good to us. The fact that we have reached this point after so many years of negotiation and interruptions. We are here. Insha’Allah. God is great. Allahu Akbar,” Duterte said.

“Talaga kung wala si Allah, mahirapan tayo dito (Really, without Allah, it would have been difficult for us). The fact that we were able to go to Congress smoothly, with a minimum of objections and especially those who are not from Mindanao.”

Duterte, born and raised a Catholic, has ruffled the feathers of the Catholic clergy for his violent rhetoric and for questioning Catholic doctrines.

In recent weeks, Duterte has been issuing insults at the clergy, suggesting that bishops should be killed.https://news.abs-cbn.com/news/01/18/...which-is-islam
Duterte was raped by catholic priest as a child. Now I understand. He switched religion (instead of banning all of them - not very promising)
