    Default Desertification and its Antidote

    ...

Here we go again... cattle ranchers, sheep and goat herders and settlers... with quite a twist

Or how large herds prevent desertification and famines as well as restore favorable climates:

"Desertification is a fancy word for land that is turning to desert," begins Allan Savory in this quietly powerful talk. And terrifyingly, it's happening to about two-thirds of the world's grasslands, accelerating climate change and causing traditional grazing societies to descend into social chaos. Savory has devoted his life to stopping it. He now believes -- and his work so far shows -- that a surprising factor can protect grasslands and even reclaim degraded land that was once desert.

http://savory.global | This in-depth documentary explores Allan Savory and how he has used Holistic Management to completely transform his land in Zimbabwe. Holistic Management was made popular in Savory's 2013 Ted Talk, How to Fight Desertification and Reverse Climate Change. This documentary was produced by Trevor Langham and his crew at Fig Multimedia Tech in Zimbabwe. We share this video in hopes that Trevor's amazing work will reach a wider audience to honor his memory.

When wolves were reintroduced to Yellowstone National Park in the United States after being absent nearly 70 years, the most remarkable "trophic cascade" occurred.

What is a trophic cascade and how exactly do wolves change rivers? George Monbiot explains in this movie remix.

    ================================================

When the wolves were reintroduced, they took on the role of "herders" who kept the herds moving around... I wonder how long it took to some shaman to figure that one out? It took Allan Savory quite a while...

The term "sustainablity" was used by David Rockefeller and is euphemism for "mass population reduction," perhaps down to 500 million worldwide as recommended by the Club of Rome.

I'm not supporting the idea of Agenda 21, but 7 billion is a few too many of us.
    What to do then?
I have some ideas, but world population must go down and it will.

From a recent rebuttal of Savory's theory:

Quote .....In 1969, the Charter Estate, a London-based company, donated land, funding, and cattle to conduct a seven-year study of Savory's "short-duration grazing" on 6,200 acres in Zimbabwe. Savory stated in 2000 that the Charter Trials, as the experiment was called, was "the only trial ever conducted" about his work and that it "proved what I have always advocated and continue to advocate when livestock are run on any land."

But a 2002 review of the Charter Trials concluded that the Savory grazing method "failed to produce the marked improvement in grass cover claimed from its application." The study's authors found "no definite evidence in the African studies that short-duration grazing . . . will accelerate plant succession." The re-greening from cattle didn't happen. (Savory has since disavowed short-duration grazing, saying that it was flawed and that holistic management, despite its similarities to the short-duration model, now offers the best option.)..... Full article here from the Sierra Club who appear to be taking a more realistic approach since getting roasted on the subject by the documentary Cowspiracy
When things seem too good to be true, it's probably because they are.

    Meanwhile in India.......

Sailesh Rao documented the restorative ability of land when grazing ceases, as illustrated by the front cover photo of his book Carbon Dharma. Click here for his presentation on the subject.

If I understood it correctly, the slaughter of 40,000 elephants was done on the idea that reducing elephants' grazing would hinder desertification and restore grasslands; that didn't work... Savory's later theory would have prevented that slaughter and turned it into a holistic grazing management.

Greening the Desert, Part II. With Geoff Lawton.

The initial 5 minute documentary Geoff Lawton made in 2001 on Greening the Desert was my first entry into Permaculture. It has been watched by countless people since its first viewing and has been incorporated into this second video. Geoff and his wife Nadia have travelled to many far flung places, into deserts that seemingly offer no hope for green life, only to transform them into a green oasis.

I consider Geoff to be a friend and one of the greatest heroes of our time. He has worked tirelessly to green our deserts and educate people about the benefits of permaculture.

His details can be found here.

I have been following savorys work hoping that the introduction of livestock was the
Solution. But it appears that maybe they are moving them too often. Reasons for doing this would include parasite management. That said, when we create compost from wasted barn hay and it sits for a year? It is equivalent to the richest soil available anywhere. Has the consistency and water retention capacity of cake batter. I am guessing that grazing needs to be more intensive with supplemental feed brought in (hay). It might be expensive initially but long term might work ( along with althemenic treatment as needed). This is what happens when scientists get involved. If only they’d just left the elephants alone.
