Default Last Surviving Nuremberg Prosecutor--Bolton, Trump Recreating Nazi Ideology

Ben Ferencz, Harvard educated lawyer, combat WW2 veteran describes his work at the Nuremburg trials and has some words of warning for modern America.

He's not a particularly angry guy just very clear speaking, thinking and a huge heart. Ninety seven or eight years old!

His criticisms of the current administration are towards the end of the video. Hopefully those who watch it will watch the whole thing!

    Thank you for that Autumn
A very wise man and a life superbly lived.
What he does in warning us that John Bolton's 'America First' is alarmingly reminiscent of Hitler's 'Deutschland Uber Alles' is breathtaking.
He ran the Nuremberg trials. He knows what he sees in this current administration. The statements made by this man of the most experienced perspective should be heard... Loudly.

    He's 99. That's pretty amazing.

What's also amazing, in a different sense, is that the video has had just 211 views. How is that possible?

It's easy to search for more presentations he's given. I'm going to work through them all. When he spoke about the horrors he'd seen with his own eyes, and the incontrovertible documents he was able to find that led to the Nuremberg prosecutions and then sentences, he didn't appear to be telling anything other than the truth. In terms of living history, it may be important to pay attention while he's still with us.

A side note about Trump and Bolton, etc. He could have said exactly the same about any American administration, even that of Kennedy. And those of many other countries, too, including Israel. So while he's a living historical archive, his comments about the current US regime need to be seen in context of a very broad and decades-old aggressive imperialist agenda that involves many, many players and nations.

He is not wrong here, maybe. But to seek publicity now, with this status he is given...

What about the grave doubts concerning the Nuremberg trials themselves, that pop up inadvertently when shovelling through the history of the world wars?

I dare not opening up completely to this man, lauded as he is.

Ferencz's approximation of John Bolton is correct, in my view. I understand there is a long history of the U.S. behaving like Nazi imperial overlords in foreign countries, but Bolton appears to kick it up a notch.

We usually see him being interviewed or giving speeches or testifying before congress. But here he is in grainy footage, possibly shot without his knowledge, and apparently behind the scenes. Video was taken a few years ago.

I'm not aware of grave doubts about the Nuremburg trials, nor why anyone would hesistate to open up to Ferencz. I mean he is in good shape for his age but don't think he is likely to sucker punch anybody literally or otherwise!

You're very welcome, Snoman. I agree with you. Things are being set up now, but the neo-cons have to get through the next election cycle without a war, or they're unelectable. But after that the gloves are going to come off. Aipac owns America.

Agree. Wait till after the election to see how this administration will differentiate itself though. It's a matter of degree, for sure but there may be a qualitative difference too.

I was as horrified as anyone when Trump appointed Bolton, after his neocon roles following 9/11, and the resulting lies about WMD to go to war in Iraq.

But now, in my view Bolton will not be around long enough, and does not have enough power, to recreate anything.

    https://www.axios.com/trump-john-bol...7c1d20354.html

    Quote Why Trump keeps Bolton

President Trump made small talk with the Irish prime minister as they sat in the Oval Office in mid-March, accompanied by a handful of senior American and Irish officials. Trump, who wore a green tie and filled his jacket pocket with a clump of shamrock to honor the Irish leader's annual St. Patrick's Day visit, turned with a half-smile to his hawkish national security adviser John Bolton, according to two sources who were in the room.

"John," Trump asked, "Is Ireland one of those countries you want to invade?"
Behind the scenes: The joke captured how Trump often privately interacts with Bolton, even occasionally in front of foreign heads of state. "John has never seen a war he doesn't like," Trump said in a recent Oval Office meeting, according to a source with direct knowledge.

Trump often privately ribs Bolton about his public persona, according to sources who've been in Situation Room meetings with them. (Trump teases most of his top advisers and officials in different ways. For example, during discussions of trade with China, Trump has needled Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin in front of other senior officials: "Steve, you're so weak. You're so weak. You didn't used to be this way in business. You're so weak now.")

In a SitRoom meeting last year, Trump's national security team was going around the table discussing a topic that was nuanced and had no relation to major military action. A source in the room said that as the conversation got to Bolton, Trump joked: "Ok, John, let me guess, you want to nuke them all?" People in the room "died laughing," the source said.

Between the lines: That's not to say that Trump's view of Bolton is rose-colored. People close to Bolton have recently worried about his job security. Yet while Bolton can rub Trump the wrong way — a well-documented dynamic — and while internal and external Bolton critics often complain to Trump that Bolton will drag him into an unwanted war, Trump still defends his national security adviser in private conversations with critics.

"He gets quite touchy when you bring it up," said a person who has criticized the national security adviser to the president. "He doesn't want anyone to believe he's anybody's pawn."
Trump's Bolton Doctrine: Trump has a strongly held theory of Bolton's value, according to senior administration officials and advisers to the president, including people who have privately recommended to Trump that he fire Bolton. Seven sources who have discussed Bolton with Trump told me the president says having Bolton on his team improves his bargaining position and gives him a psychological advantage over foes like Iran and North Korea.

"Trump thinks that Bolton is a key part of his negotiating strategy," said the same person who described Trump as "touchy" about Bolton. "He thinks that Bolton's bellicosity and eagerness to kill people is a bargaining chip when he's sitting down with foreign leaders. Bolton can be the bad cop and Trump can be the good cop. Trump believes this to his core."
A former senior administration official who remains close to Trump said Bolton's presence on the team "makes other people know that there is going to be that type of voice in the room."

Quote Trump, souring on John Bolton, meets one potential replacement and eyes another

President Trump's frustrations with national security adviser John Bolton are boiling over and he is considering removing his hawkish foreign policy aide, according to sources close to the White House.

Several insiders said candidates to replace Bolton have already emerged, including retired Army Col. Douglas Macgregor and Ricky Waddell, assistant to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Macgregor recently spoke with Trump, but it’s unclear what they discussed, according to a source.
“It’s certainly become clear to anyone who knows the way this president operates that Bolton’s time is coming to an end. It’s just unclear if he has a few more weeks or a few more months,” one former White House official told the Washington Examiner.

A second former White House official said they heard Trump is "fed up with Bolton.” A third said, "the president has seriously been considering other options.”
A different former senior administration official said, “I’d be surprised if [Trump] doesn’t want Bolton to quit. That's kind of his MO.”

Bolton’s aggressive approach to U.S. enemies has at times disconcerted the president, who regularly jokes that Bolton is hoping to enjoy a war somewhere. He frustrated Trump quarterbacking a failed uprising in Venezuela. Last week, Trump publicly disagreed with Bolton's long-sought goal of "regime change" in Iran and blessed dovish Sen. Rand Paul's request to act as an emissary.

    https://observer.com/2019/05/trump-j...our-wars-joke/

    Quote
Trump Reportedly Joked That If John Bolton Had His Way ‘We’d Be in Four Wars’

President Donald Trump joked that if United States foreign policy was decided by his national security advisor John Bolton, “We’d be in four wars by now.”
The president reportedly made the remarks in private as Bolton angled for deterrents against Iran, according to The New York Times. Officials who spoke with the publication said the president favored his advisor’s tough measures on the Iranian regime, but disliked the narrative that Bolton was moving toward a regime change in the region. Both men have been out-of-lockstep in recent months; before Bolton tasked the Pentagon with drawing up plans to deploy 120,000 troops to the Middle East, he campaigned heavily to oust Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

Neither of these potential military escalations sat well with Trump.
The feelings of contempt are mutual—in private, Bolton has also expressed frustration with the president’s unwillingness to push for regime change in the Middle East. Although Trump, earlier this month, wrote on Twitter, “There is no infighting whatsoever,” he appeared to undercut his advisor during a trip to Tokyo last weekend, telling reporters he did not want to install a new government in Tehran.
Trump also contradicted Bolton by saying that North Korea’s recent missile tests do not violate United Nations restrictions (which they do). Several days prior, Bolton had said “there is no doubt” that the ballistic missiles shots did violate Security Council resolutions.

I was as horrified as anyone when Trump appointed Bolton, after his neocon roles following 9/11, and the resulting lies about WMD to go to war in Iraq.

But now, in my view Bolton will not be around long enough, and does not have enough power, to recreate anything.

Hi mountain Jim, just so we're clear from the get go, i'm not coming at this from some flaming liberal point of view so, heres my question to you. doesn't a wise man take better care in choosing his advisors in the first place? Personally i dont see this as a joking matter. I know Trump didn't start the fire but, do we think the poor people being strangled by the US in places like Venezuela, Iran, Syria, and Yemen, see this kind of thing as a slap on the back, guy humor sort of thing?

A side note about Trump and Bolton, etc. He could have said exactly the same about any American administration, even that of Kennedy. And those of many other countries, too, including Israel. So while he's a living historical archive, his comments about the current US regime need to be seen in context of a very broad and decades-old aggressive imperialist agenda that involves many, many players and nations.
With all due respect Bill, this is not true.

The rhetoric of "Send them Home" and "Love it or leave it" is something that is new.

While the Imperialism of America goes way back and taints many administrations, like JFK, the rhetorical strategies that are being used do mirror like this man presents.

We did not see Kennedy say in public and in rallies that certain Americans need to leave. Hell, even Reagan didnt do that. He sure was racist and had many racist policies like the drug war but he didnt go on TV and call for Congresspeople to "go back to their country."

If you can prove me wrong and find me instances of Presidents being racist and using racist dog whistle, then I would love to see it. I have definitely seen it for Eisnehower, but this is in classified documents only released later going so far as to use the N word about visiting African dignitaries. Ike didnt do it in public on TV.

The concentration camps in the U.S currently are punitive in nature. That is the intent, to send a clear message to illegal immigrants. Those immigrants are trying to escape lives that are horrific, or they wouldn't do what they are doing.

These actions lack empathy, compassion and have a sadistic edge to them. Many would argue punitive tactics are necessary as the detainees will end up back where they came from and 'spread the word.' But the holocaust was also done for 'pragmatic' reasons. Pragmatism has to be balanced with high ideals or we lose our basic humanity.

Things are ramping up. They are getting much worse, like they are following a play book right out of Nazi Germany.
