    "Sanity"

    I wanted to see things I hadn't yet seen!
    Had to find out what it's like to be free,
    what it's like to be me.
    So I went out on my own
    and found myself all alone
    hiding behind a lost tear.
    Never being the type to stay behind closed doors
    I was caught by this iron grip of fear!
    I had all of these thoughts of heaven or hell,
    which for a time forced me over the edge,
    and as I fell something happened!
    Reality appeared and I landed softly on sanity again!
    The genius consistently stands out from the masses in that he unconsciously anticipates truths of which the population as a whole only later becomes conscious! Speech-circa 1937

    I only started writing poems down when I was a bit older, but here are two from a little set I self-published in 2003/2004:

    1.4 below prime

    1.4 below prime:
    a state of wealth?
    or a state of health?
    are you okay today?
    you look a little . . .

    1.4 below prime:
    an assessment of risk?
    or a reflection of mind?
    how is your intellect doing?
    it seems to be . . .

    1.4 below prime:
    a debt for life?
    or a measure of courage?
    will you give blood or money?
    or are you . . .

    1.4 below prime?

    ~~~
    Steely grey evenings
    Sometimes, on steely grey
    evenings,
    when the sun’s last
    golden light
    fades on the horizon
    I search, the silvery-blue
    sky,
    turning swiftly
    darker
    as colour bleaches out
    For the first, precious
    starlight,
    magical and promising
    one more
    shimmering, velvet night.
    *I have loved the stars too dearly to be fearful of the night*
    East Sun written in 72 so was wondering what a goggle box was. i thought maybe you meant google? lol was it a game?
    Hi Doug,
    It's a TV, an appropriate name imo. In my day we were google-eyed by the TV.
    Please read it again and see it as a personification of what we were obsessed with in those days.
    It takes on a human form. ha ha
    LOL - love that name for it! My dad used to call it the idiot box. Goggly-eyed idiots we do become, it seems...
    Good poem, Ratszinger. I wonder if others have written poems about insanity?
    Here's one I wrote with an interesting story behind it.
    I believe I was 10 years old, and one night, in the middle of the night, I awoke with this full-blown poem in my head that I was compelled to write down, which I did. Not sure why, but I felt it was important even then, and also important to leave the spelling and syntax just as I got it, errors and all. It was:
    A Poem So Sane(In)
    If all of world had gone insane
    And them be normal, few
    Be insane then called normle?
    And normaal be called coo?
    And that today this be it now
    Is my behumbled view
    The us that's nermal be locked up
    And world's amuck with COO
    (next day, after class, I showed it to my teacher, but her reaction was not good at all, but did serve to teach me discernment in sharing certain type things in the future!)
    THANKS EVERYONE all are wonderful!
    CARA, I too look for the first star in the silver blue. a beautiful time of day, or night , as one would call it
    Thrisher, I have a poem once written that will compliment yours.
    a caterpillar 2014
    a caterpillar crossed a sidewalk
    ever slow
    inching along a journey
    none would know ?
    not aware of peril
    looming to and fro
    of a pending rubber sole or satin heel,
    how would he know?
    and chance ? one could only estimate
    should he succeed to iron gate
    he knew not if his path
    was worth such aggravate
    nor did he drag his feet
    nor did accelerate
    a caterpillar crossed a sidewalk
    in stride, with rhythm and rhyme
    I cannot say if flattened
    or progressing fine...
    Hi Doug
    Do you want more poems or are you tired of them? You spurred me to search for the poems of the seventies and
    after that imo that are as valid today as they ever were.
    Also, there are those poets since then who are in their own time
    which is a part of time everlasting.
    years ago I watched a mother talking to her friend as her little girl stayed by her side but went into her own world
    to see a little girl
    not a care in the world
    as she whirls within space
    of her mothers embrace
    a foot toeing in
    with some food on her chin
    among other things
    so past forgotten
    spotted enthralled
    she preforms thru it all
    with such eyes of
    daring and mischief
    and knowing she is spotted
    she stares back anyhow
    past such time
    her mother allotted
    she spins in a place
    as she sings out a phrase
    only know by the fairies and elves
    for she lives in a place
    just a few feet of space
    this little girls
    whole universe.
    Wearing the rainbow of thirty dawns
    five forms inseparable and wide
    continuous
    undivided
    uninterrupted garment of the sun
    from which my eyes now hide
    the first impressions found
    the second not inferred
    I wrote this in '75
    Night's surrealism
    What am I when night time falls
    Moving slow between the chairs
    and shadows on the wall
    Feelings great by daylight fade
    And never were at all
    Only loneliness is real
    Keeping time with the clock
    Beating out it's measured mock
    Beating out it's loud tick tock
    Tick tock
    Tick Tock
    TICK TOCK
    CARA / who knows maybe she will become one?? ?? but at that moment, I think she was just lost in her own world of creation and imagination, safe not to far from her mother, yet free in her own way.
    Thank you Doug and Valerie, I love your poems.
    I just looked back in my dusty old folders. Had forgotten I'd written this (back in March 2006.) By no means a great poem, but the heart of it resonated once again as I read it. Seemed appropriate for Avalon. Maybe.
    A sort of prayer, I suppose.
    In Their Keeping
    Men and women of power and rank
    gather together and begin again
    Begin with a moment of stillness
    and in the stillness renew yourselves
    Renew the ground on which you stand,
    your name, your duty and your oaths
    Gather together
    Begin again
    and write your intention earnestly
    in the dawning hues
    of the summit’s rose,
    in colour and in silent deed
    as you deign to alter meanings
    and dismantle old machineries
    Unload the guns and lay them
    on the warm, forgiving earth
    Defuse the shells and quiet the
    lusting edges of the steel blades
    Empty the tanks of their heavy fuel
    and let the wind whistle her song
    through the new, uncluttered air
    of their surrendered,
    weary metal lungs
    Revisit the far away places
    where ideas were manifested
    in deathly, oft-anonymous noise
    and sweep the glass and bullets
    that lie at the feet of
    the blameless, ordinary man
    who tries, with every passing day,
    to walk the streets
    as if all has not been lost
    Mend the ache in his beaten back
    Allow his crops once more to rise
    Restore the light in his broken home
    even if in doing so
    you can’t restore it to his eyes
    But most of all
    in all of this peaceful and necessary undoing
    reverse the damage of the lies,
    the ones that said we were mistaken
    and which, in doing so, have taken
    such a mighty toll
    on consciousness and sanity,
    on our collective soul
    Give us back the dignity
    which has so long been defiled
    by betrayals and false appraisals
    and truths that were denied
    Men and women of power and rank
    gather together and begin again
    Begin with a moment of stillness
    and in the stillness renew yourselves
    Renew the ground on which you stand,
    your name, your duty and your oaths
    Write your intention
    with open eyes,
    with unrestrained humility
    in signs a hundred miles high
    that reach with dedication
    and redeeming tenderness
    out into the ether and
    across the miles of wounded sky
    Then marvel as it purifies
    the early morning rain
    which will fall into the rivers
    and the open reservoirs,
    fall in celebration
    that is yours and finally ours,
    fall from the heavens and the clouds
    into the eyes and open mouths
    that mark the faceless epitaphs
    of thirsting generations
    Write it with the omnipotent inks
    that flow from reformation
    Then hear the realisation of its efforts
    resonate at last,
    chiming through the multitudes
    as they venture into daylight,
    emerging from the winters
    and persuasions of the past
    Hear it in the common greeting,
    the vendor’s call, the scholar’s tone
    Hear it there, but most of all
    hear it circulate in the unburdened
    laughter of our children,
    as they remember the freedom
    of their unobstructed nature
    and build their strength for collaboration
    not purely for survival,
    so that when they stumble in their growth
    over their own unavoidable sins
    they will have learned how to forgive
    not merely how to stay alive
    If you give them this,
    you give them everything
    And everything
    will be safer in their keeping
    Melinda, your beautiful poem reminded me of some of Walt Whitman's poetry. He is one of my favorite poets ever.
    "The only true currency in this bankrupt world is what we share with someone when we are uncool." From the movie "Almost Famous""l "Let yourself stand cool and composed before a million universes." Walt Whitman
