Default 12,000 Years old Cone Shape Skull Oldest found of Head-Shaping

The skull known as M45, the earliest known case of head modification
on record. It dates to about 12,000 years ago.

Ancient people in China practiced human head-shaping about 12,000 years ago — meaning they bound some children's maturing skulls, encouraging the heads to grow into elongated ovals — making them the oldest group on record to purposefully squash their skulls, a new study finds.

While excavating a Neolithic site (the last period of the Stone Age) at Houtaomuga, Jilin province, in northeast China, the archaeologists found 11 elongated skulls — belonging to both males and females and ranging from toddlers to adults — that showed signs of deliberate skull reshaping, also known as intentional cranial modification (ICM).

"This is the earliest discovery of signs of intentional head modification in Eurasia continent, perhaps in the world," said study co-researcher Qian Wang, an associate professor in the Department of Biomedical Sciences at the Texas A&M University College of Dentistry. "If this practice began in East Asia, it likely spread westward to the Middle East, Russia and Europe through the steppes as well as eastward across the Bering land bridge to the Americas." [In Images: An Ancient Long-headed Woman Reconstructed]

The Houtaomuga site is a treasure trove, holding burials and artifacts from 12,000 to 5,000 years ago. During an excavation there between 2011 and 2015, archaeologists found the remains of 25 individuals, 19 of which were preserved enough to be studied for ICM. After putting these skulls in a CT scanner, which produced 3D digital images of each specimen, the researchers confirmed that 11 had indisputable signs of skull shaping, such as flattening and elongation of the frontal bone, or forehead.

The oldest ICM skull belonged to an adult male, who lived between 12,027 and 11,747 years ago, according to radiocarbon dating.

The M72 skull is between 6,300 and 5,500 years old.

Archaeologists have found reshaped human skulls all around the world, from every inhabited continent. But this particular finding, if confirmed, "will [be] the earliest evidence of the intentional head modification, which lasted for 7,000 years at the same site after its first emergence," Wang told Live Science.

The 11 ICM individuals died between ages 3 and 40, indicating that skull shaping began at a young age, when human skulls are still malleable, Wang said.

It's unclear why this particular culture practiced skull modification, but it's possible that fertility, social status and beauty could be factors, Wang said. The people with ICM buried at Houtaomuga were likely from a privileged class, as these individuals tended to have grave goods and funeral decorations.

"Apparently, these youth were treated with a decent funeral, which might suggest a high socioeconomic class," Wang said.

    An excavation at the site.

Even though the Houtaomuga man is the oldest known case of ICM in history, it's a mystery whether other known instances of ICM spread from this group, or whether they rose independently of one another, Wang said.

"It is still too early to claim intentional cranial modification first emerged in East Asia and spread elsewhere; it may have originated independently in different places," Wang said. More ancient DNA research and skull examinations throughout the world may shed light on this practice's spread, he said.

Thanks! I have to say, though, those two skulls (M45 and M72) look far more like the Paracas skulls in Peru, which weren't produced by head-binding at all: the whole cranial volume is larger.

That really is what these look like, from the photos: a larger volume.

Nassim Harimein point out in a video years back that binding the head could change the shape but not the volume.
The bound head could become pointed in shape but be the same volume--no bigger.
Seems obvious but scientists dont get that inconvenient truth!!

This is so curious to me! Were all the skulls found like that made from binding, or could there be another explanation? What started this practice in the first place? Were we attempting to look like our "friends" in the skies? So many questions and I am so curious!

@ Sky Wizard Thanks for the information. I find it amazing that we have to correct the historical history again and again in such finds.

a big thank you to all who participate in the thread. So I have the opportunity to learn from you, which in turn brings me to investigate. I'm not an experienced historian, or rather, I've been little concerned with it, my knowledge of it is superficial. But when I look at the skulls like "The M72 skull is between 6,300 and 5,500 years old".

Then I think about how big the brain of our ancestors was. I know that we use only up to ten percent of our true potential. But what about those who had such big heads? Was not her brain mass that big? Or am I wrong.? As * RogueEllis * mentioned earlier, these skulls are similar to our friends from the universe. I can not say that I miss the knowledge, yet I really wonder how big their brain mass was and how much they could use of it?

When I look at these photos, I ask myself questions. the first question: what has become of this culture? How long has this culture existed from when to when? The second skull of the younger epoch of 6.300-5.500 BP is according to science and the radiocarbon analysis is assigned to a younger epoch. Ok, then the comparison of the older skull has a similar shape as we clearly see the differences. But what about the skull of the younger epoch? Is it really a human skull? Or a race that lived on earth?

We shouldn't be surprised by any findings like this especially when the mummies turn out to have four digit hands!

Its human nature to copy what we respect and find desirable.
Teens copy their idols in dress etc.
So there is every possibility that bindings were used to shape "normal" babies heads in the hope of getting some of the attributes of the "gods"

Of course that is entirely possible but the odds are no greater than we are dealing with an entirely different species......

but it's not fashionable to say that.

I agree that there could have been an entirely different species--in fact Edgar Cayce and other have said as much.
There could well have been interbreeding between different species and manipulation of DNA
What is fashionable one moment is not in another--there is hope.

Mummies have had 4 digit hands?!
Nazca mummies were found several years ago which caused a great deal of controversy as to their authenticity despite radio carbon dating being done on them, they apparently had a different skeletal structure as well as the digits referred to. Some scientists stated that they weren't human.

The mantid species of ET allegedly also have a different number of digits for the hands.

The elongated skulls were an ancient intelligent species lived in various parts of the world. Many of them became the pharaohs of Kemet ancient Egypt. The distinction is clear as elongated are large & bindings are small. The bindings were done in a much later period by native peruvians etc to emulate the elongated skulls whom they revered.. Fun fact Barrack Obama have ties to Pharoah Arkhenaten.

Or maybe three. See this thread:
But their authenticity is hotly disputed. (Personally, I just can't see how these claimed creatures fit in to anything we know about.)

I had heard about Homo Carpensis, where the bone structure of the skull is somekind different from the Homo Sapiens.

The question is whether the bone structure of these Chinese skulls was deformed or is different, taking into account that the brain that fits in the elongated skulls can be 25 to 50% bigger than a normal human (homo sapiens) brain.
