    Germany's low coronavirus mortality rate intrigues experts

    The Guardian Philip Oltermann in Berlin,The Guardian 2 hours 0 minutes ago

    Germany’s relatively low mortality rate continues to intrigue experts as Covid-19 spreads across Europe, with some questioning the methodology behind its data gathering while others argue the country’s high testing rates allow a more accurate approximation of the threat posed by the novel coronavirus.

    While the epidemic has hit Germany with full force, with Johns Hopkins University noting 22,364 confirmed infections by Sunday morning, only 84 people are so far reported to have died.

    This means Germany currently has the lowest mortality rate of the 10 countries most severely hit by the pandemic: 0.3% compared with 9% in Italy and 4.6% in the UK.

    The contrast with Italy is especially surprising because the two countries have the highest percentage of citizens aged 65 or over in Europe. If anything, the Bloomberg Global Health Index would suggest Italians live a more healthy lifestyle than Germans.

    The World Health Organization is recommending that people take simple precautions to reduce exposure to and transmission of the coronavirus, for which there is no specific cure or vaccine.

    The UN agency advises people to:

    Frequently wash their hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or warm water and soap

    Cover their mouth and nose with a flexed elbow or tissue when sneezing or coughing

    Avoid close contact with anyone who has a fever or cough

    Seek early medical help if they have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, and share their travel history with healthcare providers

    Many countries are now enforcing or recommending curfews or lockdowns.

    In the UK, NHS advice is that anyone with symptoms should stay at home for at least 7 days.

    If you live with other people, they should stay at home for at least 14 days, to avoid spreading the infection outside the home.

    German politicians and senior health officials have been reluctant to comment on the low mortality rate while the situation is developing so rapidly. Lothar Wieler, the president of the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the government’s central public health body, has said he does not expect there to be a significant difference in mortality rates between Italy and Germany in the long run.

    “It’s too early to say whether Germany is better medically prepared for the Covid-19 pandemic than other countries,” said Marylyn Addo, who heads the infectiology department at Hamburg’s University Medical Centre.

    One likely explanation for the discrepancy in figures, Addo suggested, was that while northern Italy’s hospitals are being overrun with new patients, Germany’s are not yet at full capacity and have had more time to clear beds, stock up on equipment and redistribute personnel.

    “One advantage Germany has is that we started doing professional contact tracing when the first cases were reported,” Addo said. “It bought us some time to prepare our clinics for the coming storm”.

    Crucially, Germany started testing people even with milder symptoms relatively early on, meaning the total number of confirmed cases may give a more accurate picture of the virus’s spread than in other states.

    According to Germany’s National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians, the country has capacity for about 12,000 Covid-19 tests per day, while Wieler has claimed it has capacity for 160,000 tests per week.
    default

    While Germany has not tested its citizens at the same high rate practised in South Korea, guidelines have been in place for over a month for people to be tested even if they have early stage symptoms but have either had contact with an infected person or recently visited a “high-risk area” such as Lombardy in Italy or Wuhan in China.

    The age profile of those affected in the first few weeks has also been younger than in other countries, many of them fit and healthy people returning from skiing resorts in Austria or Italy, which would also help explain the low mortality rate.

    “I assume that many young Italians are or were infected without ever being detected,” Christian Drosten, a virologist at Berlin’s Charité hospital, told the newspaper Die Zeit. “This also explains the virus’s supposedly higher mortality rate there.”

    Drosten, who has been advising the German health ministry, has also warned that Germany’s mortality rate is likely to rise in the coming weeks as high-risk areas become harder to identify and testing capacity becomes stretched.

    “It will appear that the virus has become more dangerous, but this will be a statistical artefact, a distortion. It will simply reflect what’s already starting to happen: we’re missing more and more infections.”

    The methodology behind Germany’s data gathering could also play into the discrepancy between Italian and German figures. The RKI’s official mortality figures include both people who have died of the virus as well as those infected and with underlying health problems, where the precise cause of death could not be determined.

    If a patient is tested positive for Covid-19 in Germany, the doctor will notify the local health authority, which will then digitally transfer the data to the Robert Koch Institute. The lag in this process explains why the RKI’s daily figures have been consistently lower than those from Johns Hopkins University, which updates its data tables more frequently. By 10am on Sunday morning, for example, the RKI only notes 55 fatalities in Germany.

    Unlike in Italy, there is currently no widespread postmortem testing for the novel coronavirus in Germany. The RKI says those who were not tested for Covid-19 in their lifetime but are suspected to have been infected with the virus “can” be tested after death, but in Germany’s decentralised health system this is not yet a routine practice.

    As a result, it is theoretically possible that there could be people who may have died in their homes before being tested and who do not show up in the statistics.

    Practising medical specialists such as Addo do not believe this number of unreported cases to be statistically significant. “I have yet to see any data that would suggest a large number of untested corona-related deaths that don’t show up in the statistics,” she said.

    “Clinics dealing with respiratory illnesses have been on high alert about the virus for weeks, so I would be very surprised if there was a significant figure of uncharted deaths.”
    Be kind to all life, including your own, no matter what!!

    So your basic position is that Corona/Covid19 is not even an issue anymore, Wuhan virus, whatever they've called it. It's a bioweapon and it's mutating.
    Thanks for your post, also.

    I'm just saying the mechanics of testing are no longer relevant if you (or any friends or relatives) are fighting for their life on a respirator.

    They are important for predicting growth scenarios, and tracking outbreak clusters (if possible! But soon that'll no longer be relevant as 'community spread' sets in everywhere, like with colds or flu).

    But the reality of thousands of sick people I see as being self-evident. I don't believe we're in the Truman Show here, with everything out there being "Faked". To disbelieve all the thousands of reports coming in, even on Twitter and Facebook, and WeChat, is just head-in-the-sand denial.

    It's not about the mainstream media.
    They spin the significances and implications, and filter the importances, but the numbers all this is based on are very largely real.

    It's all more complex than that. The threats, and the realities, are all out there. Go to any of Chris Martenson's videos (or Dr John Campbell's) and read through the comments. There are many from health worker frontliners all over the world. They're not all trolls paid by the Deep State.

    At some point, we need to start believing that some things out there are real. It's about the preponderance of evidence.

    Or else we're in Flat Earth land, with the extreme view being that there's no way to "prove" that Cape Town or Moscow even exist at all if you've never been there. We all need to ask questions about everything, but we also need to be highly intelligent about all this, and this is where on this thread we can all help one another out.

    And that’s why I’m here on the PA forum – to get OUT of Flat Earth land. Heck, I live in Flat Earth land where everyone has ignored reality even when I tried to warn them. Now I’m getting emails from friends just a short distance away who are absolutely freaking out and they expect me to help them NOW? I told these same people that the time would come when I wouldn’t be able to help. I was ignored.

    Our local public health department perpetrated outright fraud on the public. Local newspaper articles were passing on mis-information as little as a week ago that led people to think that they could only be infected by patients who were sneezing or coughing. I pointed this out to the editors of the newspapers but it was too late. We are rural, but the place is a tourist trap. Infected individuals from the big cities are coming here to get away from their locked down cities, just to have fun. And even today, with LA and New York absolutely blowing up, and unemployment at record levels, these idiots keep coming with their stupidity and their infectious bodies. I’m hoping the roads and bridges are closed soon. It may still be possible for our rural county to emerge relatively unscathed from the situation. Common sense dictates that those roads be closed to non-essential traffic.

    So, yes, we need to start believing in things that are too small to see. No matter where this virus came from, if it is a virus or not, makes no difference. Once the hospitals are full, inordinate numbers of people will die for no good reason. There is such a thing as common sense. Try telling that to the lady who used to be my neighbor before I moved a year ago who’s screaming at me about how she’s stuck in her home with a dying dog and no food and hysteria going through the roof. She has no memory of me telling her that this was coming and that at some point I would not be able to assist her. Hysteria rules.

    Lots of people want to monetize that hysteria. The Health Ranger is one of them. There are lots more. Do they offer any reliable information? Only to those who can cut through the crap. And the only way to cut through it is to have a fairly calm center where rational thought can take place.

    I packed in medical supplies such as oxygen and common pharmaceuticals thinking that they might be necessary to help others. I thought about setting up my microscope so I could demonstrate how hand cleaning was crucial. But what I didn’t account for was that nobody really cared. They paid no attention. Until now. And it’s far too late. In Chris Martenson’s sad words, this didn’t have to happen.

    Think Calm. hen you’ll think with clarity. Then maybe post on the Coming Psycho-Social Transiton (CPST) thread where we can deal with hysteria. I'm thinking that we can set aside a day of the week on CPST where we do nothing but post jokes.

    Helium, as your neighbor on the Olympic Peninsula, I have made the exact same observance. We are getting large groups out here on bicycling trips and Kayak trips. Maybe if they just stayed outside but I'm sure they are stopping in every store that still remains open. Probably stocking up on that last roll of butt wipe someone overlooked. Up until a few days ago, so many folks out here thought this would stay in the big cities.. Instead, the vacation season out here just started earlier than normal.

    I hope the folks that are working in the grocery stores and other retail places will be treated well and compensated if they get sick.
    Pam:

    Can you imagine how many will be over here partying when they get their COVID checks from Uncle Sugar? Just a few bridges closed would surely help. Anyone still working in anything but essential stores really should take their vacation now. I'll remember to reward each and every retail worker with a Hostess Ding Dong when the stores open after this is all played out. Just hope we still have Ding Dongs when it's over.

    Pet the animals and cluck at the chickens for me today!
    I love the humor....party time..everyone come to the Olympic Peninsula..At least the Irrigation Festival ( the Irritation festival to the locals) probably won't happen which is kind of selfish of me as it provides income for many artisans in the area...On second thought, I would welcome the Irrigation festival and the Lavender festival which follows.

    What's with the attempted power grab by the DOJ? Ability to indefinitely detain anyone without court ruling? The dissolution of private encryption? When things like this come up in the middle of a crisis I start to question the severity of the situation being projected by the corrupt media.

    I am so confused on this whole thing. Something larger is going on behind the scenes. I just wish I knew what it was. Taking advantage of a real crisis seems most plausible. The timing of this all is just so incredibly coincidental. My mind can't keep from thinking that this was an intentional release and that the virus is real and those in power are using it in a multitude of ways to collect power, fear. But this would only make sense if the USA was working with China and the rest of the world and I just don't see that as being possible. Maybe I'm wrong.

    Can I wake up from this bad dream? Ugh.

    The mortality rate is dependant on the data set it is calculated as a proportion of.

    There are millions of times more untested people in the world than tested people. The number of those untested people to have the virus currently or previously are not in the data set.

    As daft as it sounds, we could be more helpfully served by simply doing a totality count for the 'flue season', compared to which, covid 19 hasn't even taken the lead yet.

    Help please...

    I recall, but cant remember the source -

    I have seen reference to the trump administration stopping a globalist ploy/plot using 5G and trump's admin are preventing mass collateral damage by asking people to stay inside, and reference to sealed indictments being opened and 160,000 arrests. I seem to think that the positive initiative is being managed by NAVSPEC to foil a deepstate event and that this corona virus is a 5G initiated attempt to cause mayhem and disrupt global economic, health systems and cause turmoil on a global basis.

    Is this true or fake news?

    Does anyone have any direct video link or a link to a specific update on this (not a david wilcock link please), thank you. Apologies if posted in wrong place. I am curious to follow up on this particular aspect of it all.
    thank you

    Reported just now on CNN:

    ~~~
    Michigan governor: "Lives will be lost because we weren’t prepared"
    Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer said the federal government’s initial response to the coronavirus outbreak could have disastrous consequences, according to an interview she did on ABC Sunday morning.
    “Had the federal government really started focusing when it became clear that the whole world was going to be confronting this, we would be in a stronger position right now,” Whitmer said. “That’s an issue I’m not going to belabor because I’ve got to keep solving problems, and I would like the federal government to be a partner, and I can’t afford to have a fight with the White House.”
    Whitmer also said there will be time for review actions and decision-making after the crisis has passed.
    “At some point we’re going to have to analyze where the all the failures were, and we’re going to have to make decisions based on what happened and what didn’t happen,” Whitmer said.
    “Lives will be lost because we weren’t prepared, our economy will struggle longer because we didn’t take this seriously as early enough as a country, and there will be consequences of that, but right now, I’ve got to solve problems, and I need the federal government to help me to make sure that I’ve got what we need for our frontline providers in particular, but also ventilators for people who are going to suffer.”
    ~~~

    Amen to that. The state governors are fighting to try to do the right thing for their citizens, but the US Federal Government have been throwing spanners in the works from the very beginning, and still are.

    (Is anyone reading this aware that the reason the initial CDC test kits didn't work was because they also incorporated a test for SARS and MERS? That's true. Look it up. )

    Whether Trump knows it or not, it increasingly looks like subtle sabotage from the very top. It really does.

    Every epidemiologist absolutely knows that a delay of even a few days in something critical in the testing, protection, or treatment chain might mean thousands of cases and hundreds of lives — or sometimes many times more than that.

    With an infection rate this high then I think it's time to lock down the whole of the UK.
    For comparison this is very much in line with the infection rate of smallpox - in other words lethal!!!

    Fake. The "sealed indictments' PR is from Qanon. There's zero evidence of it. Meanwhile, 5G has been discussed a lot. It's true there was 5G in Wuhan, but there are countries and areas with rapidly growing outbreaks all over the world where there's no 5G at all. Barely any in Northern Italy (and none in Codogno where the outbreak started).

    And none in Iran, where there may be hundreds of thousands of cases. None in Ecuador, where I live and where there are 532 identified cases now, with the suspicion that there may be thousands more. (No-one knows, because of the lack of test kits.) It's the same in many Latin American and African countries. The discussion is barely worth having, it's so clear.

    You could make a very long list of places with serious epidemics growing daily where there's no 5G at all. And — I do wish people would understand this! 5G symptoms can't be 'caught' by another person.

Ugh.
    Well there are a number of ways to look at this. I read one of those recent articles on the DOJ and thought it would be a great focus for the conspiracy people. And yes, concerns are justified in terms of constitutionality. But today I must be mellowed out because I’m about to say that current events go beyond an everyday crisis. There are people who will put the lives of others at risk out of ignorance or stupidity. How do you deal with that? The Chinese had their methods. We howled out loud about the inhumanity of it all. Now it’s our turn. Can we do better? I think we can, but it will take a certain amount of trust. If, in the end, we find we’ve given up freedoms that cannot be easily regained, then maybe the awareness we’ve gained about the fragility of our civilization and the need for more sustainable lifestyles will buoy everyone up. Then we can use a new-found awareness to take more control over government at all levels.

    Sure, there’s lots going on behind the scenes that we will probably never know. What I don’t hear much about, though, is how we will be able to use this situation to learn and make the future better. Patience is going to be a requirement. And I don’t mean the government learning from this. They won’t. I mean you and I and everyone else. Today I’m saying that all is not lost. DOJ, CCP? Don’t make me break the nasty speech rules.

    A lot of people are going to wake up over this. I think new leaders will come forth.

    The following article explains how Germany is beating the coranavirus odds by fewer death compared to other nations with similar number of cases. One of the reason is that Germany has one of the highest concentration of ICU beds. The country plans to have up to 56,000 ICU beds during the pandemic. As of the time of this post, the current statistics for Germany is 23,974 cases and 93 deaths.

    BEAT THE BUG How Germany is beating the coronavirus odds – with 16,626 infections but just 44 deaths

    Lucy Jones, Digital Health & Fitness Reporter
    20 Mar 2020, 10:58Updated: 20 Mar 2020, 16:42

    WITH a death toll of just 44 compared to its huge 16,626 cases of infection - Germany seems to be bucking the trend on coronavirus fatalities.

    In fact, they have a fatality rate of around just 0.2 per cent, compared to 7.9 per cent in Italy and 3.7 per cent in the UK.

    And scientists have been left baffled as to why exactly Germany's figures are so much lower than in other countries.

    It comes as the number of cases of Covid-19 in the UK have risen to 3,269, with the death toll standing at 144 - and the number of deaths now stand at 3,405 in Italy.

    Firstly, experts have pointed to the fact Germany has one of the world’s highest concentrations of hospitals may be helping to keep the German death rate down.

    On top of this, the German government said it would double the number of intensive care beds to about 56,000 amid the coronavirus pandemic.

    In contrast, the UK has just 4,000 ICU beds and frightening reports from northern Italy have told of doctors being forced to choose which patients get them.

    ICU beds can mean the difference between life and death for those who become severely ill with Covid-19.

    As well as more ICU beds, Dr Mike Ryan, health emergencies director at the World Health Organisation (WHO) also revealed rigorous testing in Germany may be having an impact on their death toll.

    He said: "Germany has had a very aggressive testing process - so the number of tests maybe detecting more mild cases."

    And, speaking at a press conference, Professor Lothar Wieler of Germany’s Robert Koch Institute added: "From the beginning, we have very systematically called upon our doctors to test people.

    "We can provide testing to a high degree so that we can easily look into the beginnings of the epidemic."

    The WHO have called on countries to "test, test, test" for coronavirus - and experts say Germany’s strict testing programme may be doing more than just keeping the death rate down by documenting more cases.

    It was only on Wednesday that Prime Minister Boris Johnson revealed that the government will increase the number of people tested for Covid-19 to 25,000 hospital patients a day.

    Official figures show that rates of infection among the most vulnerable age group, those aged 60 and above, are much lower in Germany than elsewhere too.

    While some say that is just a case of good luck, it may be that by identifying cases early, Germany has been able to track chains of infection and prevent coronavirus hitting those most vulnerable.

    “There is a very big systemic difference between Germany and other countries,” Christian Drosten, the leading virologist at Berlin’s Charite teaching hospital, told Watson magazine.

    “Our regulations for the introduction of new test procedures are very liberal. In other countries, there is a central authority that does all the testing for new diseases.”

    By contrast, in Germany any doctor can perform a coronavirus test and public health insurance will pay.

    Despite Germany appearing to be better prepared for Covid-19 than most of its neighbours, experts warned people not to be complacent about the death rate.

    I as well as most of you Im sure are dizzy with all they have read on this virus. From real, to hoax ,from panic to denial, from naturally occurring to conspiracy, I have seen and read everything.

    Call me naive , but as of now I am going to see this extreme world situation for what it is . Its real . Not a hoax, not a scam, not a power grab not a conspiracy etc.

    Because all those other theories are not actionable in my opinion, and certainly not actionable for me. What can be done? What can I do should this be a big 5g deception by the evil powers that be?

    Whats actionable for me is to treat this as real, to protect myself, and co operate with others in protecting each other. And while doing so, look inward and improve the person i am.Most of us need time to do this anyhow and would never pause to do so.

    Should I learn someday it was a big scam, Ill be happy I was had, because what could I have done today to affirm that, thus acting indifferent to all others around me?

    So for me, for now, its real and should be considered so by others in my opinion

    Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar...

    best wishes everyone

    This is about what it’s always about, control. I know I’m not the ideal person to be posting this message. I’ve been a member for a long time now, I’ve grown a lot over these years and made mistakes along the way, but always I have done my best to share honestly, to share who I really am and what I’ve learned as best as I’m able to understand it and explain it at that time.

    Years ago I received a download during one of my experiences. It was a download of a series of events to come that would all lead to what we know as the NWO, which is not about unity but complete control. Every event in the download was contrived. That doesn’t mean everyone in positions of power are in on it, and most of those who are probably don’t even know what their true role is. It also doesn’t necessarily mean this virus was let loose on purpose, but it was most definitely allowed to spread worldwide, and not just by China. This is the first time since I received that download that I’ve felt fear for where we’re at on that timeline. I’m suffering from shock as I write this post.

    I’ve explored many topics on this forum over these years and I rarely shared as an authority on them, but this much I do know for certain. Humanity has a potential that when unlocked can put an end to this agenda. Abilities that many have perhaps not even imagined. This is my life, I live it, I know this, and I know the most direct way to achieve it - to be who we really are, to be our cosmic self here on Earth. As we align more and more over time with our cosmic self, the operating mode of our human self will change.

    For those of us who don’t know who our cosmic or higher self is, our heart will show the way. Thinking has no place in this endeavour, it requires an intelligence far, far greater than intellect, an intelligence that’s at our disposal if we so desire, and thinking or trying to figure it out will only throw us off course. Listen and move forward by being directed from within. Listen no matter how long it takes to hear. The state of our energy is paramount and disciplined focus is the way to maintain and cultivate it. Where focus goes energy flows.

    Like I said, I’m not the ideal person for this message, but I don’t know when I’ll be back and I’m moved to share this before I go. One day when I’m gone for good I’m not going to care if I was perfect or respected or popular enough, I’m only going to care that I was me and shared this truth. The above is true for every human, regardless of the choices we’ve made in our lives thus far, the only way to fail in this life is to give up for good, the only way. I believe humanity is a gift and I will always believe in YOU in your ability to deliver this gift to Earth and life itself.

    I promise you we have a lot of unseen helpers but we must drive this ourselves. It’s a dance with creation and we must dance our steps. Don’t be distracted by people who don’t, creation is not a democracy.

    Don’t give up, it’s not over until it’s over, I promise you this. Source is perfection. Never early, never late, never overpowered, never lacking power. DON’T EVER GIVE UP. It can be frightening but it will be worth it.

    I wish all the ability to live joyfully through these times, as nothing is more important. Godspeed.

    What if all of it turned out to be one giant fear porn fest going rampant ... distracting us from something much bigger to come ... I would not be surprised at all. Am not saying: "the virus is not real" but the over-hyping of it is getting so extreme that MSM is more dangerous than the virus itself.

    I also notice that "Socialists Countries" (like Italy & Denmark pushing Mandatory Vaccines and suspending peoples freedoms faster) and US States that are more liberal tend to be more submissive & faster implementing draconian collectivism tyranny measures.

    ps: Am Dutch (not from USA).

    cheers,
