'THIS IS A MASSIVE SCANDAL': TRUMP FDA GRANTS DRUG COMPANY EXCLUSIVE CLAIM ON PROMISING CORONAVIRUS DRUG

As healthcare providers across the U.S. desperately attempt to treat a rapidly growing number of patients with the coronavirus, a pharmaceutical company with ties to the Trump administration has been granted exclusive status for a drug it is developing to treat the illness—a potential windfall for the company that could put the medication out of reach for many Americans.

As The Intercept reported Monday, the Food and Drug Administration granted Gilead Sciences "orphan" drug status for remdesivir, one of several drugs being tested as potential treatments for the coronavirus, officially known as COVID-19. The designation is generally reserved for drugs that treat rare illnesses affecting fewer than 200,000 Americans—but companies can be eligible if the designation, as in this case of a rapidly spreading virus, is made before a disease spreads beyond that limit.

About 40,000 Americans had contracted COVID-19 when the orphan status was granted to remdesivir Monday, and the disease is spreading faster in the U.S. than in other countries. By Tuesday afternoon, more than 51,000 Americans had confirmed cases.

Having secured orphan drug status, Gilead Sciences can now profit exclusively off the drug for seven years and could block manufacturers from developing generic versions of the drug which might be more accessible to many patients. The company can set price controls on the drug as well as benefiting from grants and tax credits.

As The Intercept reported, the designation was given to a company where Joe Grogan, a member of President Donald Trump's "coronavirus task force," worked as a lobbyist from 2011 to 2017, often working on issues regarding drug pricing.

"This is a massive scandal," tweeted Ryan Grim, Washington, D.C. bureau chief for The Intercept. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) called the reports of profiteering by Gilead Sciences, with the support of the Trump administration, "insane and unacceptable" and demanded that treatment for the coronavirus be made free for all Americans.

The Orphan Drug Act of 1983 was passed to ensure medications for rare diseases can be developed, and was meant to benefit companies which may not recoup their research costs after their drugs are put on the market.

But as Sharon Lerner and Lee Fang reported at The Intercept, the "orphan" status is expected to create a massive windfall for Gilead. "The special orphan designation," they wrote, "was given to remdesivir despite hefty support by the government for the development of the drug. Gilead Sciences' remdesivir was developed with at least $79 million in U.S. government funding."

"The Trump Administration just gave the Gilead pharma corporation a seven-year monopoly, so they can charge patients outrageous prices for the medication we've already paid for," Social Security Works tweeted.

Gilead's rush to profit off a potentially life-saving drug in the midst of a public health and economic crisis could prove "deeply harmful" to the American people, many more of whom are expected to contract the coronavirus, said government watchdog Public Citizen.

"Remdesivir is one of relatively few medicines that may prove effective in treating COVID-19 this year," said Peter Maybarduk, director of the group's Access to Medicines program. "The government should be urgently concerned with its affordability for citizens. Instead, the FDA has handed Gilead, one of the most profitable pharmaceutical corporations on earth, a long and entirely undeserved seven-year monopoly and, with it, the ability to charge outrageous prices to consumers."

"Gilead has gamed the system by rushing through its 'rare disease' orphan drug application," Maybarduk added. "Its action is disingenuous and outrageous."

The grassroots group ACT UP, which has fought for decades for equitable access to HIV-AIDS drugs and to healthcare, also expressed outrage on social media. "This is how pharma greed kills," the group said.

Interesting old newspaper clipping about the 1918 pandemic that indicates they used quinine even back then for treatment. (last sentence) Seems this has been known to be a remedy for a very long time.

Well I don't know about the " Hydroxychloroquine" but I do know that this works
CDL or chlordioxide. I don't know how you spell it in english. but it derives from MMS. MMS is also very efficent but more difficult to handle as you have to mix two liquids. CDL is already done and easy to use. It has been used to eliminate bacterias and viruses from blood conserves for over 20 years and there are a few doctors who were able to heal already over 850000 people in africa from malaria. Dr. Andreas Kalker started the approval for medicine 1,5 years ago. I use it regulary and it gets rid of a flu within 1 day.

The Netherlands and France have already started to work with " Hydroxychloroquine". Belgium will follow.

    https://www.brusselstimes.com/all-ne...l-news/102387/

Belgium’s Federal Agency for Medicines and Health Products (FAMHP) is reserving hydroxychloroquine, an anti-malarial drug, for patients who really need it in light of the new coronavirus (Covid-19).

The drug, marketed under the name Plaquenil, has entered clinical trials in France and the United States, and its results against Covid-19 are promising, according to Le Vif/L’Express on Tuesday. Belgium has also started clinical trials for experimental treatments against the coronavirus.

The FAMHP has asked distributors of the product to reserve it for hospitals treating patients with the coronavirus, as well as pharmacies, where people with a medical prescription can obtain it.

“Using the limited stocks of these medicines for unnecessary or unjustified preventive treatments jeopardises the availability of these medicines for patients who need them: chronic patients and hospital patients seriously affected by Covid-19,” the agency said. The anti-malarial drug is also used against diseases such as lupus and rheumatoid arthritis.

Coronavirus: UK deaths rise by 43 to 465 in last 24 hours

    Sky News Sky News

The number of people who have died in the UK after contracting coronavirus has risen by 43 to 465.

It represents the smallest rise in the number of deaths since 17 March - more than a week ago.

But there was the biggest increase in the number of infections across the UK - up 1,542 to 9,529.

In England, 28 people died in 24 hours.

There were four deaths at Barts Health NHS Trust in London and four others at University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust.

Those who died include a 47-year-old who did not have an underlying health condition.

The others who died, including one person aged 93, did have underlying health conditions.

Six more deaths in Scotland take the total there to 22, and First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has said there are 51 people now in intensive care who have been diagnosed with COVID-19 or are suspected to have it.

Wales has announced five more coronavirus deaths, also taking its total to 22, and Northern Ireland said its total had increased from four to seven.

The UK's coronavirus numbers as it stands:

Among those confirmed to have tested positive is Prince Charles, whose diagnosis was announced earlier.

The Ministry of Justice has also announced that 19 prisoners across 10 jails have been diagnosed with the infection, plus four prison staff across four jails and three prisoner escort and custody services staff.

The Department for Health and Social Care will update the UK total for deaths, confirmed cases and tests later.

The number of cases and deaths is expected to continue to keep rising as the UK waits to feel the impact of a nationwide lockdown enforced by Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Monday.

Imperial College Professor Neil Ferguson, whose work on the epidemic has informed the government's policy, has said his research team is "moderately confident" that demand for intensive care beds will peak in two-and-a-half to three weeks' time if the measures have the desired effect.

:: Listen to the Daily podcast on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, Spreaker.

The prime minister remains under pressure to further strengthen the lockdown to stop non-essential construction workers heading to building sites, so as not to overwhelm public transport.

NHS staff have complained of being met with packed London Underground services so far this week because so many people are continuing to go to work.

The government is still working to boost the health service's resources as the UK prepares for a surge in serious coronavirus cases, with 250,000 volunteers being sought to help vulnerable people.

The ExCel Centre in east London is also being converted into a field hospital with 4,000 beds to cope with demand.

Military personnel have been seen at the huge exhibition centre to begin work on transforming it into NHS Nightingale, which was announced by Health Secretary Matt Hancock on Tuesday.

Last night I only saw the end of the show on one of national television in which was presented how the vaccine against covid 19 was discovered and how it will be used for other forms of corona viruses.

They can now produce 600 shots in their labs, but they were contacted by Chinese and US embassies in Romania. However they need more some pectide or peptide,I don't remember exactly.

Here is the article (use google translate) in which is presented only a fraction of what the doctor presented last night on tv.
"BREAKING - Vaccinul românesc anti-coronavirus ar putea fi pe piaţă în toamnă. Americanii şi chinezii vor să-l achiziţioneze" Romanian anti corona virus vaccine it could be on market by Autumn.Americans and Chinese want to buy it.

and this is the doctor who discover it Prof. Dr. Virgil Paunescu with contact details:

The entire Romanian media speak about the discovery.

Last night show where the announcement was made.Is in Romanian and it doesn't have cc caption...sorry.

    Thanks for your post, Greybeard.

In cases of (younger) persons without underlying health conditions that have died, I wonder if they really died because of the virus.

Perhaps they died of some other disease, but were tested positive with Covid 19 at that time. But, they could have been infected earlier and recovered, without having been very ill.

So if tested later, when having another health problem, their immunity came up as being positive.

    Its quite puzzling.
The official figures for the UK show the death rate falling and it seems no where near the number of fatalities for deaths from the various flue epedemics of past years.
UK scientists have now lowered the threat of this "Panademic"
If this is weaponised -- it does not seem that effective in the uk.
The cure does seem, at this moment, worse than the disease here
    However, early days yet.
Many countries seem to be having a terrible time of it by comparison.
There does seem to be an agenda at least according to David Icke.
    Video allready posted.
    May be so.

The UK chancellor is expected to hand self-employed workers a lifeline on Thursday, with many facing a collapse in income as the coronavirus has battered the economy.

The government has been under enormous pressure to support the self-employed, including from business lobby groups, opposition parties and Conservative backbenchers.

Many freelance workers from painter-decorators to musicians to lawyers face a long spell without work as Covid-19 and the government’s response have taken a heavy toll.

Almost half a million people have applied for the universal credit benefit in the past 10 days, with hundreds of thousands thought to have been laid off in the hospitality sector. Nearly a million self-employed workers are in sectors where demand has plummeted or trading has ceased altogether, according to the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS).

Chancellor Rishi Sunak has already announced an unprecedented scheme for employees who would otherwise be laid off, but nothing similar has yet been confirmed for the self-employed.

Taxpayer help will soon be available for employers to fund up to 80% of the wages of staff otherwise at risk of redundancy. But the Treasury has been working frantically to draw up new measures to also support those who work for themselves.

Prime minister Boris Johnson has now promised a “comprehensive” scheme with “parity of support” for the self-employed, with details likely to be unveiled at a daily government coronavirus briefing on Thursday afternoon.

Reports vary about how many workers will benefit and what form the measures could take, however. One source close to talks within government told the Financial Times the package would be “pretty damned universal,” which would appear to suggest a significant proportion of Britain’s 5 million self-employed workers may be eligible.

But the Resolution Foundation think tank expects only around one in three, 1.7 million, will stand to benefit, for now at least.

The level of support likely to be available is not yet clear. Full “parity,” which some MPs expect, would see workers receive 80% of their previous incomes, up to a limit of £2,500 ($2,969) a month as under the scheme for employees.

But the Treasury is thought to be wary about the mounting costs of its support package, large handouts to high earners, issues identifying who needs help and bogus self-employment.

“The challenge is designing something that gets to the people who we want to help, while at the same time being affordable and not having to benefit absolutely everybody. That is proving to be problematic but we are hard at work on it,” said Sunak earlier this week.

There are some reports only those on low and average incomes will receive help. A cap could be set at around £1,700 a month or based on median average UK incomes, but the Times suggests the cap could be well above average earnings at around £50,000.

Setting up a new scheme from scratch and reviewing workers’ applications could also take more time than the employee wage scheme, where HMRC can make calculations through existing systems and data from its pay-as-you-earn system (PAYE).

The universal credit benefit has already been tweaked to help more self-employed claim to replace or top up reduced incomes. But business leaders and think tanks say it is nowhere near generous enough, and may struggle to deal with the new caseload.

Adam Marshall, director general of the British Chambers of Commerce, told the BBC on Thursday: "For many people that have seen their businesses disappear in the blink of an eye, things like statutory sick pay or universal credit just isn't enough.

"It doesn't need to be perfect – we just need a system in place.”

Now we're talking. Finally, here is a state governor who is thinking, obviously has some sharp people around him, and is taking bold and decisive action. This kind of thing is just common sense folks, let's stop freaking out that the boogey man is waiting around every corner, and that we're all just helplessly hiding and waiting to get picked off one by one. Let's get some eyes to see this thing, let's get some ideas together, and go on the offensive.

Yes now we are talking. Some excellent posts these last days. Prof. Raoult in Marseille speaks no-nonsense to the figureheads in Paris. Your governor Cuomo has a plan to get healthy and recovered persons soon out of confinement and back to work. And we have a post that lays out the situation with all these military bio-labs that are in clear infringement of the Biological Weapons Convention ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biolog...ons_Convention )

The other day I saw a newsreel filming inside a police station with the ever more precise monitoring on screens taking place, and showing their latest gadgets of drones to find and fine the public that dares to go outside with 3 instead of 2 persons .
They clearly are having a good time wielding power over the confined citizens. Notice that this virus is more aggressive than the ones in previous epidemics. Just in time to be combined with increased monitoring using technology that did not exist in previous epidemics.
This is not only an epidemic, it is an attack with us being taken hostage.

And yes many more people are going to die , but those who do were damaged and condemned anyway because the planet is sick and polluted. The virus is only the tipping point to make it happen faster and all at once.

Yesterday, Trump announced a $2.2 Trillion (with a T) emergency fund. Listen to the video if you're interested in what it will be allocated to but my first thought was, "This will be coming from the Fed', right?" : i.e. created out of thin air, but paid back with very tangible interest.

Previously in this thread, I've been guilty regarding cui bono, particularly America vis a vis China and Israel vis a vis Iran. However, if most countries are calling upon their respective central banks for emergency assistance, then aren't they (the banksters) once again the real winners? I use the term again in reference to their part in most wars throughout recent history.

His announcement about the fund is at 05:39.

(apologies if this has already been discussed - TBH I struggle to keep up with this thread)

I'm wondering why my I'm wondering why my previous thread was merged into this one?? My thread was specifically talking about treatments that would work on this Coronavirus and I think it deserves its own thread. I think it's a mistake the merge what I was doing into this thread here. Whose decision was that to remove my thread merge it into this thread?

    Mod note from Bill:
if we have too many separate Covid threads, things just get confusing, and members don't know where best to post new information or ideas.

We also already have this thread:

A 100% guarantee that is the case. They don't want you to find out. I think it is over folks - any reason to hold us all ransom behind our walls is just invalid once the cure is out in the open.

Happened to me as well... I think Bill is just trying to consolidate the information
