New coronavirus test that uses the gene-editing tool CRISPR could offer a simpler way to screen for the virus at HOME, scientists say

    3 hrs ago 3 minute
    • The scientists behind the CRISPR gene editing technology have retooled it for use as a coronavirus test
    • CRISPR's first stage detects a piece of genetic material, and with the right enzyme, it can find viral RNA instead of human DNA
    • The Broad Institute's entire test works in one test tube, meaning it could potentially be done in full at home, rather than being sent to a lab for analysis
    • It's approximately as accurate as other tests and can return results in an hour
    • Broad has applied for emergency use authorization of its test with the FDA
One of the teams that developed the revolutionary (but controversial) gene-editing tool, CRISPR, has retooled it to make a new coronavirus test, scientists at MIT and the Broad Institute announced Tuesday.

The newly-designed test can detect even trace amounts of the virus via either nasal swab or spit sample.

Dr Feng Zhang and his team told Stat News that their new test can return results within an hour.

And because all of the chemicals needed to run the diagnostic are contained in a single test tube, the researchers say it's more fail-proof and will be easier to launch than have been many of the fumbled tests that hit the US market earlier.

Already, Dr Zhang's collaborators have published the protocol required for the test, and the researchers are in talks with the Food and Drug Administration to get emergency use authorization for it.

A new test that uses CRISPR technology to detect coronavirus genetic material in a patient sample could be run entirely at a point-of-care or even at home as all of the chemicals involved react within an hour in a single test tube, displaying negative (left) or positive (right) results on paper strips similar to a pregnancy test

Dr Zhang told Stat News that the diagnostic is currently only available for research purposes, but that it is highly accurate.

CRISPR has drawn excitement for its potential to correct genetic diseases, as well as alarm, after a Chinese scientists revealed last year that he had gene-edited a pair of twins in the womb.

The technology is comprised of remarkable capabilities: it can find particular genes along a strand of DNA, then snip out the faulty piece and finally replace it with a corrected version of the gene.

That first element - correctly identifying a bit of genetic material - is essentially what coronavirus tests do. They detect the genetic material, or RNA, of the virus.

In lab experiments, the CRISPR test proved 97 percent sensitive - meaning it only failed to identify coronavirus in samples where the virus was present - and 100 percent specific, meaning it never mistakes something else for coronavirus.

That puts it on par with the other available diagnostics for coronavirus.

But the CRISPR test's most important distinction is that it is a 'one pot' test, meaning the sample goes into a test tube where all the necessary reactions to identify the virus happen in one place.

It doesn't have to be run in an analysis machine like others do.

To make the test, researchers had to find an enzyme that would hunt down and identify viral genetic material at the appropriate temperature and detect even trace amounts of it

Currently, one 'at-home' coronavirus test kit - Abbott's Pixel - has gotten explicit emergency use authorization from the FDA.

But that simply means that the sample - a lower nasal swab - can be collected by a patient at home.

Then, it's sent back out to a lab, where it has to be run on a PCR (polymerases chain reaction) machine.

So while some of these tests can be run in a matter of minutes, it's often days before results are returned to the patient.

The entire CRISPR test could eventually be an at-home diagnostic, the Broad team says.

All of the agents that react to the sample can do so in one test tube, then a paper dipstick shows the results, similar to how a pregnancy test displays results.

Detection in CRISPR is accomplished by enzymes. For editing human genes, scientists use an enzyme called Cas9.

But to make the editor recognize coronavirus at correct temperature, the researchers had to pick out a different enzyme.

They landed on one that comes from a bacterium that gives orange juice its nasty taste when it's gone bad.

Instead of requiring a clinician to pipet reagent into a tray with the sample and other chemicals, it's all self contained.

So, in theory, a person could put their own sample in a tube, where it would mix with the CRISPR enzyme and reagent, react, and turn either the positive or negative stripe on the paper strip darker.

In early tests, it reacts with saliva also, which would make the test even easier to perform in the comfort of home without risking exposure.

'The ability to test for COVID-19 at home, or even in pharmacies or places of employment, could be a game-changer for getting people safely back to work and into their communities,' said Dr Zhang.

'Creating a point-of-care tool is a critically important goal to allow timely decisions for protecting patients and those around them.'

COVID: breathing ventilators, New York, death rate
    by Jon Rappoport
    May 8, 2020
    https://blog.nomorefakenews.com/2020...rk-death-rate/

"A recent study from the Journal of the American Medical Association Network delivers numbers that should make you stop and think—

JAMA Network, April 22, 2020, “Presenting Characteristics, Comorbidities, and Outcomes Among 5700 Patients Hospitalized With COVID-19 in the New York City Area”:

“Mortality rates for those who received mechanical ventilation in the 18-to-65 and older-than-65 age groups were 76.4% and 97.2%, respectively. Mortality rates for those in the 18-to-65 and older-than-65 age groups who did not receive mechanical ventilation were 19.8% and 26.6%, respectively.”

Well, of course, the people who were put on ventilators were the most ill patients to begin with, right? Perhaps. We don’t know that.

In any case, the numbers are shocking.

    How to explain them?

    I offer several clues.

CLUE ONE: A close and trusted researcher has told me the following: many older people live with chronically low oxygen levels. This may not be ideal, but they survive.

However, when such people arrive at hospitals, doctors can misinterpret the oxygen levels, believing these are dire emergency situations—and therefore, they put the patients on ventilators. With too much pressure, the result can be lung damage and death.

CLUE TWO: The now-famous New York ER doctor, Cameron Kyle-Sidell, at Maimonides Medical Center, has stated that standard ventilator protocol could be damaging and killing patients.

NY Post, April 6: “In another video posted Sunday, Kyle-Sidell described COVID-19…It is as if tens of thousands of my fellow New Yorkers are on a plane at 30,000 feet and the cabin pressure is slowly being let out’,” he said in a video posted Tuesday.”

“’These patients are slowly being starved of oxygen … and while they look like patients absolutely on the brink of death, they do not look like patients dying of pneumonia’.”

Sidell has said the lung muscles of these patients are functioning. That is not the problem. Oxygen deprivation is the problem.

NY Post: “James Cai, a physician assistant who was New Jersey’s first coronavirus patient, told The Post that he agreed with Kyle-Sidell’s observations and conclusions…”

“Cai noted that the… ‘[lung muscle in the] COVID-19 patient works just fine. So [a] ventilator is actually doing more harm to [the] lung…thousands of thousands [of] Americans’ lives are on the line!’”

CLUE THREE: Money. Insurance money. In a phone interview, physician and Minnesota state senator, Scott Jensen, told me that hospitals, who are suffering very deep financial losses, are incentivized by Medicare to label as many patients as possible “COVID-19,” and to put them on ventilators.

Jensen stated that a patient on Medicare, diagnosed with straight pneumonia, would bring a $4600 payment to the hospital. The same patient, labeled “COVID-19 pneumonia,” would bring $13,000. And if that patient is put on a ventilator: $39,000.

Result? Patients unnecessarily put on ventilators. With the wrong protocol, harm and death could result.

CLUE FOUR: In New York, there are many elderly and very ill people, suffering from long-term conditions that have nothing to do with an epidemic. They have been treated for years with toxic drugs and toxic vaccines. They already have lung problems. Massive propaganda about the COVID virus terrifies them. They believe they might be “infected.” They’re also afraid their neighbors might report them to the authorities if they cough at night. They come to hospitals. There, in the midst of a foreign environment, they’re confused and even more scared. Diagnosed with COVID, put on ventilators, isolated from family and friends, they give up and die.

There is one more factor that has been overlooked. It involves the “high-altitude sickness” in patients. Oxygen deprivation. Some people have explained this as an effect of the recent rollout of 5G technology.

Here, from a CDC FAQ about 2003 SARS—yes, I said 2003—is a brief quote: “After 2 to 7 days, SARS patients may develop a dry, nonproductive cough that might be accompanied by or progress to a condition in which the oxygen levels in the blood are low (hypoxia).”

So unless the CDC is retrospectively rewriting history, straight oxygen deprivation (hypoxia) is not a recent development.

WebMD describes hypoxia: “Hypoxemia (low oxygen in your blood) can cause hypoxia (low oxygen in your tissues) when your blood doesn’t carry enough oxygen to your tissues to meet your body’s needs. The word hypoxia is sometimes used to describe both problems.”

WebMD lists a number of causes: asthma attack; trauma (injury); COPD; emphysema; bronchitis; pain medicines, “and other drugs that hold back breathing”; heart problems; anemia, “a low number of red blood cells, which carry oxygen.”

Among the drugs that can cause the oxygen deprivation known as hypoxia? From drugabuse.com: “…opiate [opioid] drugs also slow your breathing…and in case of an overdose, your breathing is slowed to a virtually non-existent and lethal level.”

Is anyone looking into that, in New York?

More from drugabuse.com: “In the U.S., a whopping 44 people die each and every day as a result of respiratory arrest brought on by prescription opioid overdose. The opioids depress your breathing, bring on heavy sedation and make it impossible to wake up. What’s more, the opioids found in painkillers are the same ones found in heroin, which caused over 8,000 overdose deaths in 2013.”

From Medscape, there is more: “Life-threatening breathing difficulties can occur in patients who use gabapentin or pregabalin with opioids or other drugs that depress the central nervous system, as well as those with underlying respiratory impairment and the elderly, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned in a drug safety communication issued today.”

2018 estimate of deaths from opioid overdoses in New York: 3000. Many more people in the New York area are addicted to these drugs. In New York State, in 2017, the number of people discharged from hospitals, after treatment for opioid overdose or dependency: 25,000.

In 2020, still more people who have developed opioid hypoxia would be missed, because they are diagnosed with “COVID-19 lung problems.” Some of these people would be put on ventilators—ignoring the need to deal with their overdose, their addiction, their withdrawal—and they would die.

New York City, opioids, heroin, severe breathing problems, hypoxia.

None of the clues I’ve listed requires the existence or transmission of a purported coronavirus.

Note: In the near future, I hope to publish updated information from the extraordinary environmental researcher, Jim West, who has been documenting the effects of pollution in the New York area for 20 years.

This is a funny kind of pandemic, featuring empty hospitals

This is a funny kind of pandemic, featuring empty hospitals

    Adoni

The way this whole thing has played out shows me that there simply is no “novel corona virus”, at least not in the sense that the media is pushing it. A pandemic identifies itself by killing large numbers of people very quickly and by spreading across the planet in short order. If there actually was a pandemic, those two features would be overwhelmingly evident and there would be no need for a 24/7 media push to cement the idea onto the minds of people. If there was an actual pandemic, the sheer number of deaths and new cases of infection would be irrefutably evident, with massively overrun hospitals and mass burials in every country on Earth.

This is a funny kind of pandemic, though; featuring empty hospitals, comparatively very few deaths, plenty of time for politicians to bumble around making ridiculous statements, and absolutely no evidence of any spread of any single disease that can be proven to be due to this supposed “new virus”. This pandemic also features an almost infinite list of symptoms, and claims that infected carriers are asymptomatic. How convenient for those pushing this fraud.

Another feature of this new kind of pandemic is that deaths from other diseases seem to have stopped almost entirely. See: Death rates in the United States have been going down, not up (April 24, 2020 by Dr. Klaus L.E. Kaiser)

If you pay attention to the news, you might assume that record numbers of people are dying. The opposite is true.

This is a pandemic of unjustified panic, spreading due to media lies, not a pandemic of a lethal virus. Infection is self inflicted, though. You can stop it from infecting you by turning off your TV, or simply using it to watch old movies on DVD.

Consuming the nonstop stream of panic porn on TV news programming usually results in infection. The symptoms of the infection include wearing masks (improvised or manufactured), wandering around in public wearing exam gloves, and jumping away from anyone who strays within ten feet of you. Those infected by this panic are easy to avoid, but the people causing this reaction are bound to become more and more unavoidable as they think of new ways to inflict their ideas upon everyone.

    Good luck, everybody.

Doctors on front line of worst-hit city in world say it’s time to end shutdow
    n
    The Telegraph Josie Ensor,The Telegraph

    https://uk.yahoo.com/news/doctors-fr...212802597.html

The doctor looked around the unusually quiet intensive care unit, catching his breath and taking stock for the first time in what felt like weeks.

Dr Samir Farhat’s hospital in New York had been at the epicentre of the coronavirus outbreak in the US. Now, the ICU was almost back to normal and he found himself wondering when the city would be too.

“It’s not often I agree with Trump, but I think that we should open up on May 15,” said Dr Farhat, who runs the emergency room at New York Community Hospital as well as working as a physician at Mount Sinai Brooklyn.

The New York governor’s three-phase plan to end the lockdown will see the city next week begin slowly easing restrictions that have paralysed the Big Apple for months.

But Dr Farhat and doctors at other major New York hospitals who spoke to The Telegraph said their experience on the front line of the crisis had, somewhat unexpectedly, convinced them the city should reopen without delay.

“Hospital census is right down, admissions are too,” Dr Farhat said. “Opening up now is a calculated risk we need to take.”

Dr Farhat, who specialises in pulmonology, worries that he has not seen the cases of severe asthma, heart attacks and strokes that usually fill his ER beds.

His concern is that the virus has stopped them from seeking medical attention, an unfortunate - and sometimes fatal - consequence of the stay-at-home strategy.

The number of 911 ambulance calls declined to 3,320 in late April, down from a peak of 6,527 on March 30, according to New York Fire Department data. The figure marks its lowest call volume in years.

Dr Daniel Murphy, chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine at St Barnabas Hospital in The Bronx who has treated dozens of coronavirus patients, claims “inordinate fear” has guided the public response.
Coronavirus USA Spotlight Chart - deaths default

“While Covid-19 is serious, fear of it is being over-amplified. The public needs to understand that the vast majority of infected people do quite well,” he wrote in the New York Post.

He said he noticed the “wave had crested” at St Barnabas on April 7 - three weeks after the statewide shutdown was ordered. “It was a discrete, noticeable event. Stretchers became available, and the number of arriving Covid-19 patients dropped below the number discharged, transferred or deceased,” he said.

“This was striking, because the community I serve is poor. Most work in ‘essential,’ low-paying jobs where distancing isn’t easy. Nevertheless, the wave passed over us, peaked and subsided.

“The way this transpired tells me the ebb and flow had more to do with the natural course of the outbreak than it did with the lockdown,” he said.

His observation appeared to be supported by figures released on Wednesday by Governor Andrew Cuomo, which showed the majority of people who are still being hospitalised with the virus across the state were staying at home and not essential workers.

The survey of 1,269 patients admitted to 113 hospitals over three recent days - the first such look at people getting seriously ill despite six weeks of severe social distancing - confounded expectations.

Retirees accounted for 37 per cent of the people hospitalised. Another 46 per cent were unemployed. Almost three-quarters were 51 years or older. Only 17 per cent were working.

Just four per cent were still using public transportation in their daily life, though it also noted that information on transit use was only available for about half the people surveyed.

The data has prompted questions of how effective the lockdown has been and for how much longer it will be necessary.

“Covid-19 is also more prevalent than we think. Many New Yorkers already have the infection, whether they are aware of it or not,” Dr Murphy said.

A recent antibody sample study which showed that one-in-five residents of New York City had likely already had the virus.

“As of today, over 43 per cent of those tested are positive in The Bronx. We are developing a significant degree of natural herd immunity,” he said. “Distancing works, but I am skeptical that it is playing as predominant a role as many think.”

As states across the US began opening up this week - with mixed results - New York is set to remain closed until the middle of the month.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has a three-phase approach to reopening the state, which could begin on May 15 - Reuters

Mr Cuomo said the state can only progress to “Phase One” once seven requirements were met, including recording a 14-day decline in hospitalisations; an availability rate for intensive care unit beds of at least 30 per cent; and at least 30 working contact tracers per 100,000 residents.

So far it has only met three and is some way off meeting the other four, raising the prospect it could be under severe restrictions for weeks, if not months, to come.

Bill de Blasio, New York’s mayor, warned it looked as if life would not return to normal until September at the earliest.

Virologists and other health experts, however, are expressing growing dread over what they say is an all-but-certain second wave of deaths and infections that could force states to clamp back down.

"We're risking a backslide that will be intolerable," said Dr Ian Lipkin of Columbia University's Center for Infection and Immunity.

The US has recorded over 70,000 deaths and 1.2 million confirmed infections.

This week, the researchers behind a widely cited model from the University of Washington nearly doubled their projection of deaths in the US to around 134,000 through early August, in large part because of the easing of state stay-at-home orders.

Dr Lipkin said preventing outbreaks will require aggressive contact tracing powered by armies of public health workers hundreds of thousands of people strong, which the US currently does not have.

Dr Farhat said he thought a second wave would not be as bad as the first, in part, he offered, because of what doctors have learned. “We are much better prepared now, and have started to figure out what works and what doesn’t,” he said.

“There is a much greater immunity rate now too,” he said, while the elderly population, particularly those in nursing homes, has already been disproportionately affected.

Both talk about the serious longer term effects of a prolonged shutdown. “The lasting impact is what worries me the most,” said Dr Murphy.

The lockdown has decimated the economy, a factor both doctors said could hurt both physical and mental health and should not be downplayed.
Dr Samir Farhat runs the emergency department at New York Community Hospital, which has seen a drop in patients since the initial surge in late March-early April

One in five working New York City residents will lose their jobs by the end of next month because of the avirus, Comptroller Scott Stringer predicted in an alarming new fiscal report.

This quarter will see a 22 per cent unemployment rate — the highest in the city’s postwar history.

Peter Singer, a bioethics professor at Princeton, said officials need to think about the consequences other than in terms of deaths. “I think the consequences are horrific, in terms of unemployment in particular, which has been shown to have a very serious effect on well-being, and particularly for poorer people.

“Yes, people will die if we open up, but the consequences of not opening up are so severe that maybe we’ve got to do it anyway.” he told the New York Times.

The trade-off is already being made for essential workers, the majority of whom are low-wage. The calculations around reopening are, to some extent, about how comfortable we are with the professional classes becoming part of the trade-off, as Vanita Gupta, president and chief executive of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, put it.

The doctors the Telegraph spoke to stressed it was not simply a matter of reopening overnight.

“Life has to change, we don’t just spring back to normal,” Dr Farhat said. “We need to wear masks as a habit, scale up testing, and really consider whether we strictly need to travel.”

Mr Coumo has already warned there will have to be a “new normal” after the lockdown is eased, rather than a return to life as New Yorkers knew it.

“We can’t wait for a vaccine that may not come for two years, if it comes at all,” Dr Farhat said. A report out this week revealed a third of Americans would not get a vaccine even if there was one available.

“We just have to figure out a way to live with this,” the doctor said.
Be kind to all life, including your own, no matter what!!

"COVID-19 is the Green New Deal, by hook or by crook. The Green New Deal is Agenda 21 by another name, also known as Agenda 2030 and Agenda 2050.Madonna and other blackmailed superstars are now telling their fans to never go back to their conspicuous consumption ways – the same way that AOC is.

COVID-19 is a pretext for the roll-out of Agenda 2030 and a “contact-tracing” technocracy, that mimics the NSA’s PRISM in 3D space, that’s being used to build-out the Internet of Things and reduce the population of the US by two-thirds, according to Deagel.com.http://www.deagel.com/country/foreca...ation&ord=DESC

Nobody was buying Agenda 2030 from Greta Thunberg, so the Deep State had to hold the world hostage to get its way.

The Plandemic had been decades in the making for just this moment, evident from the lockstep scripted behavior of global governments. How were they able to pull this off?

Big Pharma have emerged as heavies capable of staging this planetary coup. They’re perhaps the only cohesive group with financial resources to match the world’s militaries.

Many mayors and governors have obviously been read-in. We see the exact same pattern in countries like Brazil, where the lower-level authorities (mayors and governors), particularly those on the Left are shutting down businesses and effectively putting their citizens under house arrest.

We’ve all heard about the “Tropical Trump”. Less well-known are Brazil’s tropical counterparts to Eric Garcetti, Gretchen Whitmer and Kate Brown, “resisting” their President at every turn. Be it Trump or Bolsonaro, the commanders-in-chief are attacked for the “carelessness” of their responses to the Globalist Pandemic.

I’m sure there’s a similar pattern in the EU, the difference being that virtually every EU politician is either an agent or a hostage of the Globalist parasitic cabal. This is evident in the video of the Coronavirus Response international pledging event telethon, hosted by EU President, Ursula Van der Leyen, featuring various national and UN leaders from around the world, shown in this superb video by Amazing Polly.

East-, West- and South Asian states and former Soviet States are seen playing along with the covid psy-op., with African countries also joining in on the charade.

The Globalists momentarily have Trump on the ropes but he’s using the crisis to his advantage, folding the enemy Federal Reserve Bank into the Treasury and creating Special Purpose Vehicles to provide the interest-free $6 trillion stimulus package.

We’re seeing the execution of the endless money supply of Modern Monetary Theory. Why vote Democrat to have your Communism, when we’ve seemingly already got it under Trump? All he has to do now is to forgive college debt."

Because of the measures currently being taken, emergency rooms are empty because there are fewer outdoor accidents. Nobody is getting the flu. People who require immediate attention and arrive by ambulance are quickly whisked into a room. They're not filling out paperwork. The main hospital where I live, those undergoing any procedure are advised to enter by appointment, avoiding the emergency area. Elective surgeries have been rescheduled. This is why hospitals appear empty and why they are, indeed half empty. Mitigation efforts work. They have to slowly come to an end, granted, but nobody can justify the argument that Covid 19 is a hoax based on the success of a lockdown's success on hospital traffic.

Lockdown has prevented a surge in hospital admissions, absent a few hotspots, like Brooklyn.

I think this is the most important 3 minutes of this interview:

    MP3
    https://app.box.com/s/25sslbwx4bj8ci9c9y7trmn3tsf3ww2a

Dr Buttar states that the company, Moderna, selected by 'Bill Gates' to manufacture the vaccine is over a billion dollars in the red and facing bankrupcy. (read as - DESPERATE)

He goes on to say that it's going to be the first RNA vaccine ever produced. RNA alters DNA. The trial humans for the vaccine have to abstain from sexual intercourse during the trial period. WHY ? . Dr Buttar suggests it's because they don't want us to find out too soon what effect it has on the next and subsequent generations produced after this vaccine has been administered. He suggests it could make them sterile.

I think it could be a lot of things, not just make them sterile.

Anthony Fauci plus two other Whitehouse. Virus staff in Quarantine. (Should be house arrest)

Washington: Three members of the White House coronavirus task force, including Dr Anthony Fauci, have placed themselves in quarantine after contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19.

It's another stark reminder that not even one of the nation's most secure buildings is immune from the virus.
Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and a leading member of the task force, has become nationally known for his simple and direct(Lies) explanations to the public about the coronavirus and COVID-19, the disease it causes.

Also quarantining are Dr Robert Redfield, director of the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, and the commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, Stephen Hahn.

I ultimately hope Fauci's under house arrest. He was supposed to testify under oath to grilling Senate without the demoncrats next week to interrupt the session - I sure hope this "quarantine" is not his excuse to escape the questioning (or should I say - public lynching). Gates Offers Nigerian House of Reps $10 Million Bribe for Speedy Passage of Compulsory Coronavirus Vaccine Bill – Citizens Threaten Action to Stop It
    May 11, 2020
    Vaccine Impact
    https://vaccineimpact.com/2020/bill-...on-to-stop-it/

    "by Samson Atekojo Usman
    Daily Post

    Excerpts:

The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), on Monday (May 4, 2020), alleged that it has intercepted a human intelligence report that the Nigeria House of Representatives leadership was poised to forcefully pass the compulsory vaccine bill without subjecting it to the traditions of legislative proceedings.

In a statement issued and signed by the spokesperson of the opposition political parties, Barrister Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere and sent to DAILY POST in Abuja on Monday, the body urged lawmakers in the lower chamber to rise against impunity.

The body in the statement alleged that a sum of $10 million was offered by the American Computer Czar, Bill Gates to influence the speedy passage of the bill without recourse to legislative public hearing, a development they averted as anachronistic, adding that the Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila should be impeached if he forces the bill on members.

    The statement read:

“Opposition Coalition (CUPP) has intercepted very credible intelligence and hereby alerts Nigerians of plans by the leadership of the House of Representatives led by Femi Gbajabiamila to forcefully and without adherence to the rules of lawmaking to pass the Control of Infectious Diseases Bill 2020 otherwise known as the Compulsory Vaccination Bill which is proposing a compulsory vaccination of all Nigerians even when the vaccines have not been discovered.

“This intelligence is coupled with the information of the alleged receipt, from sources outside the country but very interested in the Bill, of the sum of $10 million by the sponsors and promoters of the Bill to distribute among lawmakers to ensure a smooth passage of the Bill.

“The Nigeria opposition rejects the Bill and urges opposition lawmakers in the House of Representatives to confront the Speaker of the House with these facts tomorrow at plenary and resist every plan to illegally pass the Bill.

“We have been informed that the alleged deal on the passage of the Bill was struck during a trip to Austria a few months back while the financial support for the promotion of the Bill was allegedly received last week to mobilize for a push leading to the hurried attempt to pass the Bill by any means necessary.

“Nigerians are reminded that at present, there is no discovered/approved vaccine anywhere in the world and one now begins to wonder why the hurry to pass a Bill for a compulsory vaccine when there is none.

“What if the world eventually does not find a vaccine or cure for coronavirus just like it has not found a cure for HIV AIDS? What is the hurry in passing a Bill based on speculation or is there anything else the leadership of the House would want to tell Nigerians? Is this bill what will stop the mass deaths and infections rising in Lagos, Kano, Abuja, Gombe, Borno, Kaduna, Ogun, Bauchi and indeed all over the country?

“Is this Bill going to revive and grow the economy and reduce hunger and give us more testing kits or bed spaces? Is this Bill going to stop the stealing of palliatives meant for poor and vulnerable Nigerians? Is it true that all these noises for the Bill is all for the alleged $10 million?

“Why make a law for a vaccine that has not been discovered? Does it mean that Femi Gbajabiamila and the promoters have an idea of the vaccine and when it will be ready? When nations like Madagascar are making local remedies which is working, APC is making a law to compulsorily inject Nigerians with vaccines our former slave masters have not yet discovered.

“The plan to push the passing of the bill is evil.”

“The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC did not make any contributions to the drafting of the Bill and has even told Femi Gbajabiamila to suspend the Bill as the timing is very wrong but Mr. Gbajabiamila believes he can secure the silence and acquiescence of the NCDC with all the illegal powers been provided for the NCDC in the Bill hence he still wants to push ahead with it the passage.

“We are saying loudly again and calling on House of Representatives to suspend this Control of Infectious Diseases Bill and await for proper input and scrutiny after the pandemic and charge all efforts towards giving the needed support to reduce the spread and find a homegrown solution.” "

Infectious Disease Bill: ‘Why the rush’ – Christian leaders blast Nigerian lawmakers
    By Wale Odunsi
    The Daily Post

    "Excerpts:

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has kicked against the bill on Infectious Disease Control before the House of Representatives.

CAN, in a statement on Tuesday by General Secretary, Joseph Daramola, queried “the rush” to allow the bill to be passed into law with jet speed.

“The question in the hearts of many people is this: Why the rush when the vaccine is not available yet?,” they quipped.

The Christian leadership gave reasons it was against the moves by the Nigerian lawmakers.

    CAN said the bill:

“was initiated to destroy the Civil and Human Rights of Nigerians; that it prevents Nigerians from having a say in their own affairs.”

“Among this denial of the fundamental human rights are: right to life, personal liberty, freedom from inhuman treatment, privacy, right to acquire/own property, freedom of movement and religion.”

“These rights are held sacred and invaluable except on clearly defined occasions as provided for by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

CAN reminded the federal legislators that the courts in Nigeria, on numerous occasions, struck out Acts of Parliaments and Legislation including Executive Orders of Governments, that were against fundamental human rights.

    The body told them to:

“allow the Spirit of God to prevail over the primordial intentions and ambition; not to pass this controversial, nebulous and obnoxious bill into law in the overall interest of Nigerians”. "

COVID-19 is not the greatest crisis in our history. It is not even the greatest public health crisis in our history. But the lockdown is without doubt the greatest interference with personal liberty in our history.

It is normal at this point to add 'in peacetime'. But we can forget that. Even in wartime, we never confined the entire population to their homes, 24/7, if they did not have some excuse acceptable to a Minister.

States have always tried to confine people known to be carrying dangerous infections. But we live in a new world in which, if we are ill, the State will try to cure us. From this, it is said to follow that the State can take control of our lives against our will even if we are healthy, lest we fall ill and need its services too much.

Suddenly, it is our duty to save the NHS, not the other way round.

It is now pointless to object to the imposition of the lockdown in the first place. It has happened. The question is how we get out of it.

It is a pity that the Government did not ask itself that question when, in the blind panic following the delivery of Imperial College London's Professor Neil Ferguson's statistical projections, it legislated the lockdown on the hoof in a late-night press conference.

They now find themselves trapped by their own decisions.

Ministers have formulated five tests to be satisfied before the lockdown is lifted. What is wrong with these tests is that they are all about health and only about health.

The Government has formulated them in their own interest. They think that this will allow them to avoid criticism by sheltering behind the scientists. But that is just an evasion of political responsibility. Of course it is understandable that politicians should want to shelter themselves from criticism. But there is no reason why the rest of us should help them do it.

Ending the lockdown is a political decision, not a scientific one.

It boils down to a single question. Is it worth it? That depends only partly on the science. There are also moral judgments, constitutional values and economic consequences involved. But since the Government likes its tests to come in fives, here is a five-part test which tries to address the real issues.
LORD SUMPTION: What kind of relationship do we want with the State?
    +3

LORD SUMPTION: What kind of relationship do we want with the State?

First, the medical issue. I am not going to argue about Professor Ferguson's projections. They have caused some discomfort among reputable professionals. They are based on some rather arbitrary assumptions. And they leave out of the account important considerations, such as the adverse health consequences of the lockdown itself or the number of people who would have died anyway from underlying clinical conditions even without Covid-19, maybe a few months later. But let us take it as a given, since it is probably true, that the lockdown will save a significant number of lives, albeit fewer than Professor Ferguson projects.

Second, we need to ask how many deaths we are prepared to accept in order to preserve other things that we value. However valuable 'saving lives' may be, it is not the only valuable thing. Some comparison is therefore unavoidable between the lives we gain and the other things we lose by a lockdown.

To say that life is priceless and nothing else counts is just empty rhetoric. People say it because it is emotionally comfortable and avoids awkward dilemmas. But they don't actually believe it.

We went to war in 1939 because lives were worth losing for liberty. We allow cars on the roads because lives are worth losing for convenience. We travel by air although pollution kills. We tut-tut about it, but we willingly do it.

Third question. What sort of life do we think we are protecting? There is more to life than the avoidance of death. Life is a drink with friends. Life is a crowded football match or a live concert. Life is a family celebration with children and grandchildren. Life is companionship, an arm around one's back, laughter or tears shared at less than two metres. These things are not just optional extras. They are life itself. They are fundamental to our humanity, to our existence as social beings. Of course death is permanent, whereas joy may be temporarily suspended. But the force of that point depends on how temporary it really is.

Viruses don't just go away. This one will never disappear unless and until there is enough exposure to it to produce collective immunity or an effective vaccine appears.

Talk of compulsorily 'shielding' (in plain English locking up) the old and vulnerable until one of those things happens is a cruel mockery of basic human values.

Fourth, there is the money question. People decry attempts to measure the mortality of Covid-19 against the economic cost of reducing it. But this too is rhetoric, and hypocritical rhetoric at that.

Money is not just for plutocrats. You and I and the editor of The Guardian and the driver of the No 9 bus and the Archbishop of Canterbury and the cashier at the supermarket all value and depend on money.

Not just in the sense that it pays our wages or pensions. Hundreds of thousands of businesses are going under. Millions are moving from jobs to universal credit. A thriving economy, of the kind that we are now throwing away, is the source of our security and the foundation of our children's future.

We would do well not to sneer at it. Poverty kills too. And when it does not kill, it maims, mentally, physically and socially.

Last but not least, we have to ask ourselves what are the limits to the things that the State can legitimately do to people against their will in a liberal democracy.

To say that there are no limits is the stuff of tyrants. Every despot who ever lived thought that he was coercing his subjects for their own good or that of society at large.

One of the more impressive observations of the Swedish epidemiologist Professor Johann Giesecke, in the interview in which he justified Sweden's refusal to lock its people down, was not about epidemiology at all.

His point was that there are some things that may work and that a totalitarian state like China can do. But a country like Sweden with its long liberal tradition cannot do them unless it wants to become like China.

We, too, have to ask ourselves what kind of relationship we want with the State. Do we really want to be the kind of society where basic freedoms are conditional on the decisions of politicians in thrall to scientists and statisticians? Where human beings are just tools of public policy?

A society in which the Government can confine most of the population without controversy is not one in which civilised people would want to live, regardless of their answers to these questions. Is it worth it?

My own answer is no. Guidance is fine. Voluntary self-isolation is fine, and strongly advisable for the more vulnerable. Most of them will do it by choice. But coercion is not fine. There is no moral or principled justification for it.

Not everyone will agree, which is fair enough. These are difficult value judgments, on which one would not expect general agreement.

The fundamental point is that these questions need to be confronted and publicly discussed by politicians without the kind of emotive evasions, propagandist slogans and generalised hype that have characterised their contribution so far.
