My initial reaction on seeing the vast devastation and no dark clouds and the mushroom was that it was a sabotage or a terrorist attack.
It is strange that if this happened some years ago, there would have been many posts suggesting so, even of the nuclear kind. But so far on this thread there is no suggestion of conspiracy. It must be that the majority is correct this time, it is just an accident.

It's too soon to know, we haven't seen any phone footage from the period before and during the first explosion. My current working assumption is that there was no burning fire before the first explosion, because if there was, someone would probably have pointed a phone camera at it and we'd have seen the footage by now, maybe something will turn up yet.

I, for one, am quite suspicious that something fishy is going on. For one thing, I really don't think anyone would have a fireworks factory or any other kind of hazardous industry in the middle of a port.

It looks like the "fireworks/weapons" depot was used as a detonator for the Nitroprill HD...

I don't know what happened here, but I'm having a hard time believing it was ammonium nitrate that caused that blast. That shock wave looked too symmetrical to be a warehouse full of fertiliser. My Grandfather used to mike pipe bombs on the farm to get rid of big tree stumps so I've seen it go off many times, and I remember how to make them, the fertiliser has to be compacted, along with a couple of other ingredients.

I don't know, this just 'smells' funny.

    Ahhhh,

I just lifted this from Jim Stone's site, this is exactly what I was thinking:

Quote There are rumors there was a warehouse full of ammonium nitrate that blew up, Those rumors are BUNK. Ammonium nitrate is an oxidizer and needs something to oxidize added before it will explode. If that ammonium nitrate was not somehow saturated with a couple thousand tons of diesel to make this blast possible, something else did this.
Plus, if it was ammonium nitrate there should be millions of small pellets of it on the ground all around the area of the blast, there is not a chance in hell that 100% of the stored nitrate, in those ton bags, would've combusted.

    Not a chance.

It was the same when Tim McVeigh apparently bombed the Alfred P. Murrah federal building in Oklahoma city, the alleged bomb was said to be an ammonium nitrate device but likewise, there was not a single pellet of nitrate to be seen anywhere on the ground. The damage to the building looked like a barometric/thermobaric weapon.

This latest blast in Beirut has a blast profile similar to a Fuel-Air-Explosive.

P.S. So, I'm learning a lot as we go along. With this being Ammonium Nitrate, as opposed to Ammonium Nitrite, A-Nitrate can detonate without the need for a high explosive initiator or fuel oil. Ammonium Nitrate at room temp is safe, however if heated to above 200°C, as in a huge fire, Ammonium Nitrate can self detonate without being mixed with the magical ingredients that turn it from an oxidiser to a high explosive.

    Hmmmmm............

If it was a nuclear strike then the EMP blast would have disabled all the vehicles that you can still see operating after the blast.

I'm not onboard with it being a nuke unless someone has a better explanation.

"Would an EMP Attack Disable all Vehicles?

No, an EMP attack would not disable all vehicles. According to a study conducted by the United States EMP Commission, only about 1 out of 50 vehicles are likely to be rendered inoperable. The effects of an EMP on hybrid and electric vehicles, however, have yet to be studied and is currently unknown."

The ship was confiscated in the port, therefore the court had to decide what to do with the dangerous cargo. As it seems, the court tried to sit it out.

Quote The thousands of tons of ammonium nitrate that Lebanese officials are blaming for the huge explosion arrived in the city aboard an ailing, Russian-owned cargo ship that made an unscheduled stop in the city more than six years ago.

Lebanese customs officials wrote letters to the courts at least six times from 2014 to 2017, seeking guidance on how to dispose of the highly combustible material, according to public records cited by a Lebanese lawmaker, Salim Aoun.

Solutions proposed by the officials included exporting the ammonium nitrate, which is used in fertilizer and explosives, or donating it to the Lebanese Army. But the judiciary failed to respond to the letters, the records suggested.

The general manager of Beirut port, Hassan Koraytem, appeared to confirm that account on Wednesday in an interview with OTV, a local broadcaster. Despite numerous requests to have the material moved, “nothing happened,” Mr. Koraytem said.

“We have been waiting for this to be resolved for six years, in vain,” he said.

Anger swelled in Lebanon, as people demanded to know who was to blame for the dangerous cache being allowed to sit at the port for years, and why it was not kept in safer conditions.

    More details:

Quote Lebanese authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire that led to the massive explosion. They have not yet announced what they think was the definitive cause of that fire.

However, Lebanon's LBCI-TV reported on August 5 that, according to preliminary information, the fire that set off the explosion was started accidentally by welders who were closing off a gap that allowed unauthorized entry into the warehouse.

LBCI said sparks from a welder's torch are thought to have ignited fireworks stored in a warehouse, which in turn detonated the nearby cargo of ammonium nitrate that had been unloaded from the MV Rhosus years earlier.

Independent experts say orange clouds that followed the massive blast on August 4 were likely from toxic nitrogen dioxide gas that is released after an explosion involving nitrates.

    more from that linked article:

Quote Prokoshev described being stranded in Lebanon with the ship's other unpaid crew members as a form of "incarceration," saying that Grechushkin had left the crew without any financial or other support.

He also blamed Lebanese authorities for the massive explosion on August 4. "They should have gotten get rid of the vessel right away instead of confiscating it and demanding fees for harboring it," Prokoshev told RFE/RL.

"Secondly, we are talking about ammonium nitrate here. They could have used it for their [agricultural] fields. Nobody was claiming it, which means it belonged to nobody," Prokoshev said.

Lebanese authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire that led to the massive explosion. They have not yet announced what they think was the definitive cause of that fire.

The Texas city disaster 1947 a ship loaded with 2,300 tons (about 2,086 metric tons) of ammonium nitrate detonated killing over 500 people

Interesting is the image showing the 2-ton anchor that was catapulted more than 1.6 miles by the force of the explosion.

Great find. It certainly looks like it's footage of the port explosion? You can clearly see the masive shockwave hit the camera a few seconds after the explosion which was a big part of the Beirut signature. If so, the object doesn't quite look like a missile. Don't they have a trailing exhaust? And it almost looks circular. But whatever it is, it's definitely on the trajectory of the explosion and a cursory look at the timing does indicate it hits and then explodes the surroundings. Perhaps it's the device that detonates what's in the storage facilities below? The other possibility of course is that the object was added after the fact. Worth a close look, for sure....

If it was a nuclear strike then the EMP blast would have disabled all the vehicles that you can still see operating after the blast.

I'm not onboard with it being a nuke unless someone has a better explanation.
... and the Lebanese would be screaming from the rooftops showing all the radiation on Geiger counters. There's no radiation there.
Also the building right next to the crater was not completely leveled, but other buildings around were, a real nuclear explosion (caused by a bomb coming from above) would have left nothing around ground zero
    Tired

Which new weapon was used in the Gulf and in Beirut?

At the beginning of July, a new weapon was deployed against 7 Iranian ships in the Persian Gulf [1], then again on 4 August rocking the port of Beirut.

In all eight cases, the smoke cloud bore no resemblance to that generated by a conventional explosion; what rose instead was a mushroom cloud like in an atomic explosion.

In Beirut, the blast caused the ground to shake in a radius of 200 kilometers, at a magnitude of 3.5 on the Richter scale, according to the German Geoscience Center (GFZ). It was this vibration and not the explosion itself that destroyed many parts of the city.

The detonation also caused a giant wave and destroyed cars adjacent to the port, without however displacing them or the water sideways, but rather as if pressure had been exerted directly on the sea and on the site of the disaster.

These attacks come as the judgment of the United Nations Special Tribunal for Lebanon is to take place on 7 August [2]. It will in all likelihood be postponed.
