Default Anyone got a rational explanation for this...?

CONTEXT: We stay in the rural highlands - no neighbours - in a farmhouse - v dark and v quiet at night. We've lived here nearly 20 years raised 5 kids - without drama.

Last night circa 02:15, my wife and i both woke up from a sound sleep to the terrible CRASHING loud noise of lots of glass smashing then fragments hitting and rolling across the floor. We both screamed and put the bedside lights on. Then the big room light. NOTHING.

The deafening smashing noise which we both heard, woke us - not the sound of each other screaming in shock.

My leg has been in a "moonboot" due to recent hospital stay - (with its own "experiences" - Posted separately) and have difficulty walking, but alert and awake hobbled about in my boxer shorts trying to identify the carnage and the source of the noise.

    - NOTHING!!!

    It sounded like either -

    a) Someone had just thrown a very large brick in through our bedroom window (12 x pane old sash and case ) and as though the glass had landed all over our wooden bedroom floor (House circa 1820s - 6 bed farmhouse, high ceilings, wooden floors, original fireplaces etc)

    - WINDOW FINE. NO GLASS. NO EVIDENCE IN ROOM - NOTHING.

    b) Like a Glass Chandelier had fallen from ceiling onto the floor and all the shards had rolled/spread over the wooden floor.

    - LIGHT ABOVE BED (NOT CHANDELIER) FINE - NOTHING.

Hair on right arm vertical, Hobbled through to living room - cat still sleeping on sofa where I left it when we retired for evening. Dog sleeping where left too. Made way upstairs to son's room. Woke him (hes 30) and asked him to help me search the house as I still awkwardly mobile.

Quick mental check - no alcohol, no grudges, no smells. no fires. nothing.

Lights on throughout house with torches too - we checked every room with and dog - NOTHING.

Contemplated calling police but nothing to tell them or show them. Began to feel a little foolish wondering what I could and would say if I were to call them? (as no evidence of anything had happened.)

Scary weird experience. No evidence and it appears the animals didn't hear or react to it - even weirder as the noise was deafening.

A tad apprehensive about tonight to be honest.

Anyone any thoughts, explanations, ideas or suggestions?

    Thank you in advance.

Yes it has happened to me a lot but not such huge crashes. Always the loud sound that can be identified as a chair falling over or the ornament falling off the shelf and then when checked out there is nothing at all. Once or twice can be ignored but not a continual stream of these noises over the years. I have also heard things falling over in the loft and again nothing at all. This can happen at any time of day. I have just accepted this as either Beings wanting my attention for something or a Being playing games. I could be way off beam with explanations but have never felt a malevolence from it. It could be a merging of dimensions or an entering of something into this reality.

Your experience sounds incredibly frightening. If you meditate or sit quietly you may get some further information on why this happened.

    collective nightmare?
I heard it from a group practice, they were experimenting things like a collective dreams, though never knew if they successfully did or not.
The dream may indicate a very intense connection between you and your wife, about the crashing I can't tell you, perhaps someone that interpret dreams could give a better clue.
Ask others around your area if they had the same dream, maybe is something related to the area.

This won't help but thought I'd share anyway as your post reminded me of a slightly similar experience I had a couple of weeks ago.  I woke up and trembled with shock to very loud thunder that rattled my bedroom window.   The thunder that makes you jump outta ya skin because it's that close.

Later that morning I commented to Mum, who was also in the house, about the loud thunder we had.  She never heard it.

So I pondered how the loud thunder noise, which I presumed must have been from my dream world, could have broken through dimensions.  Then I gave up trying to work it out.

Upon waking up, right in the edge of sleep, one can experience powerful hypnogogic or hypnopompic hallucinations. They are very often auditory in nature. I've experienced explosions, loud engines, crashes, metallic scraping, etc.

It usually happens upon waking, rather than falling to sleep. Have you or your spouse ever dealt with sleep paralysis? Alpha sleep can intrude into REM sleep causing a myriad of effects. Only once or twice have I shared an awakening like that. The are quite alarming.

Mind awake,,, body asleep... It's actually quite natural.

    Keep us updated.

Very interesting. The scary thing was we both heard it and both turned on our bedside light at same time. Now had a chance to speak about it all again today, Neither of us can remember any dream just prior to waking.

I'm a light sleeper, and ironically my wife wears 2 hearing aids, and takes them out at bedtime.

She described the noise like above in op. (Same as me.)

Absolutely gobsmacked by this one. Open to any & all thoughts. Thanking you all.

    https://patient.info/doctor/hypnagogic-hallucinations
    Description
Hypnagogic or hypnopompic hallucinations are visual, tactile, auditory, or other sensory events, usually brief but occasionally prolonged, that occur at the transition from wakefulness to sleep (hypnagogic) or from sleep to wakefulness (hypnopompic). The phenomenon is thought to have been first described by the Dutch physician Isbrand Van Diemerbroeck in 1664.[1] The person may hear sounds that are not there and see visual hallucinations. These visual and auditory images are very vivid and may be bizarre or disturbing.

    Epidemiology[2]
Hypnagogic hallucinations can occur without narcolepsy. People may be reluctant to admit to them for fear of being thought mentally ill. However, they are thought to occur in most people at least once in their lives.
The wide variation in reporting rates has resulted in a wide variation in quoted lifetime incidence: (hypnopompic 6-13%, hypnagogic 25-38%).
    Sex ratio is equal.
One study of 14,000 individuals reported that people with anxiety, depression, or bipolar affective disorder have a two-fold increase in experiencing hypnopompic or hypnagogic hallucinations at least once weekly.
The same study reported that patients with adjustment disorders had a 1.5-fold increase in experiencing these phenomena at least once weekly.
The study also reported that over half the individuals who experienced hypnagogic or hypnopompic hallucinations had no evidence of physical disorder, substance-abuse disorder, sleep disorder, or other psychiatric disorder.

My own experiences have led to a lifetime of fully conscious Out of Body Experiences... There is much more lurking on the edge of sleep...

@scotslad, check the history of your house (just as a matter of due diligence if nothing else). If you're in a rural area it may be possible to research it through parish archives etc.

If there's no material evidence of a source for the crashing sound then you both had a simultaneous hallucinatory experience. Archie Roy was resident ghostbuster in Scotland while he was alive (he taught me orbital mechanics which was unfortunately completely free of any esoteric content ! :-) ) but your kind of experience was exactly the type of thing he used to investigate in his spare time.

If you don't discover a fallen-over vase in your attic or something and remain completely stumped you could always try: https://thesspr.com/our-story/

Thorough check round the property today - inside and out. No evidence of anything out of place. For tonight, I do have a wall torch with a proximity sensor and am plugging into wall in bedroom. No idea if it will help or exacerbate the situation. Dog sleeping in our room tonight.

I did wonder about stone tape theory, but can't think what would trigger it or what the original event might be. And the fact we both heard it, but the animals didnt.

does sound intriguing, and our house is 200 years old
with a lot of history it appears. Will attempt to do more digging over the weekend.

No, I dont think so for it was a very distinct crash of glass breaking, something v heavy falling on floor then what can only be described as lots of beads/shards of glass landing on the floor almost simultaneousy over the floor, yet no physical evidence in the room.

I do appreciate the headsup and suggestion as I try and sherlock holmes out all possibilities and probabilities to try and establish the actual source/cause.

Thank you. Am open to any and all suggestions.
My only other thought would be a clash of dimensions. Best of luck in solving your mystery. I know it can be unsettling. We still have UAP showing up on our drone footage - it feels creepy.

Very fascinating. I would concur with AriG, a noise that bled over from another dimension. It's also interesting the dog didn't appear to hear anything.

A phantom noise of my own I consistently experience is like a high-pitched feedback and other times static, coming unmistakably from the speakers of my PC - but only when I'm in another room. When I go and check the room where the computer is, I discover what I already knew. The PC is off and the speakers not even plugged in.

Also, keep in mind, the term 'auditory hallucination' is a medical/clinical term. I actually agree with the others. The term 'dimensional bleed-through' is much more accurate, methinks... Especially since you Both heard it.

    Fascinating is an understatement...

    Quote https://patient.info/doctor/hypnagogic-hallucinations
Fascinating. That definitely new one on me, and possible i think, but both of us at same time?

If you'd been nearer the industrial belt I'd have suggested low flying Buckie bottle.
