People think they give away things all the time but they fail to understand that giving anything away with conditions is not giving at all. For instance, if I give you a car and you turn around and sell the car and bank the cash that is your choice. If I get upset and think that I could have just as easily sold the car and put the cash in my account then I really never gave the car away in the first place. So it is with love.

You must freely give your love away without condition. Even if it is not always reciprocated or returned. From time to time it may even be rejected out of hand. Over time unconditional love becomes easier to give and will be recognized as something unique and extraordinary. This is one of the first steps in developing a deep love without fear of rejection or dismissal.

You must understand unconditional giving and you must give love to get love.

    Well said.

If I were to add or paraphrase ...

In order to build love you have to be able to receive it, and you cannot receive until you give it freely. Think of it like flowing water and you are a vessel. If its not moving, it is stagnant. Love is available to us at all time, from everywhere - the earth itself, the plants and animals, the cosmos, the Universe, The Angels, - everywhere.

But learning to receive it is a bit of an art, but you first need to practice giving it so that you are ripe for receiving it, then it comes more easily. Love that is not flowing is like electricity that has no current. In fact it may be accurate to view it as a current like electricity - without its flow - as soon as you apply any "condition", it ceases to exist altogether.

Keep in mind that the emotion we feel that we call "love" isn't actually love itself - its just an emotion. Real Love can trigger a blissful emotion, but it is not that emotion itself. In fact I was just pondering writing a thread on this very topic ...

Anyway, Real love can be tuned into, by keeping oneself in a state of gratitude, appreciation, or praise - these states help to facilitate the flow of Love within yourself ... but the trick is to give it freely when you get it, to keep that flow going.

Unconditional love is a state of Being. It is something that we are rather than what we do. The doing will flow naturally from that state of Being. It cannot be faked (but it can be practised) because people will feel that it is not genuine. If you live from the heart then fear will not be an issue.

That is actually an excellent point. Many people don't feel that they are worthy of a healthy loving relationship. We all know people like this, they sabotage their relationships even their own marriages. So the starting point is to put yourself into a position to truly understand that you are deserving of someone else's love.

This is definitely an issue for me, something I am working on. It's a shame, I'm getting older and I'm pretty numb so to speak. I wish I could articulate it better, I've come far in life I've overcome horrendous depression and a nasty temper so compared to me of 10 years ago I'm doing great. I'm not sad or upset or whatever I'm just kinda numb. It's just that I went from like -10 to 0 if that makes sense.

This will sound lame but I'm kind of afraid of love. I don't want folks to get too close to me so I keep them at arms distance. I need to get over my fear and live life to the fullest.

On a different note, I'm sorta the same way with compliments, they don't do much for me. When complimented I basically put on a mask and act how I feel I should by saying "oh thanks" and pretending to be cheery but honestly it doesn't do much. It's like trying to put out a forest fire with a glass of water. I think this has a bit to do with my upbringing, who knows. Hell, it could be worse. I'm confident life will improve.
    That's life, and I can't deny it

I hear ya. I'm the same in a lot of ways. Compliments make me cringe sometimes, but I know I know I should accept them with grace (past childhood thing). I'm working on trying to be a better conduit for Love - not just in the relationship with other humans sense, but more broadly into everyday life, and everything I perceive and every task that I do.

I think it was the book "A Course in Miracles" that indicated that the purpose of a human is to receive and give love. That's all we really need to work on; from there, everything else will start to fall into place. It is not easy to achieve a steady state of this, sure small pockets here and there can be done, but a steady state? That is something that must be practiced with attention to even remotely achieve.

At the end of the day though, process is goal. One just needs to keep moving in that direction, and love oneself for that.
