Quote Mohamed Salah's former team-mate Ahmed Refaat suffers on-pitch heart attack and stops breathing 'for more than an hour' as Egyptian Premier League game is suspended due to shocking incident

    - Forward collapsed on the field
    - Was rushed to hospital
    - Modern Future FC providing updates

    - WHAT HAPPENED?

The 30-year-old forward, who has nine senior caps for Egypt to his name, formed part of the Modern Future FC squad that took in an Egyptian Premier League game with Ittihad of Alexandria on Monday. He started that fixture on the bench, but was introduced just after the hour mark.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Refaat suffered a scary collapse two minutes from the end of the match and was rushed to hospital, leading to the game in question being suspended. He has been placed in intensive care, with his condition being closely monitored by medical professionals.

    WHAT MODERN FUTURE FC SAID

Modern Future FC have said in a statement relayed by KingFut: “Ahmed Refaat’s heart stopped for more than an hour, despite all resuscitation attempts by the medical staff at Zamzam Hospital near the stadium before his heart rate improved gradually. However, his condition is still medically unstable, which prevents his transfer. Unless his health condition stabilises, the player will continue to receive treatment and undergo the necessary tests.

The club are following the situation on a momentary basis from the hospital, and everyone will be updated immediately. We would like to call on the media to respect the player’s personal life as well as his health and ask the Egyptian football fans to pray for Ahmed Refaat to be safe and sound as soon as possible.”

    WHAT NEXT?

Refaat, who has played alongside Liverpool superstar Salah when representing his country, previously won the Egyptian Cup and Super Cup while on the books of Zamalek and has been with Modern Future FC since October 2021.

Quote Former Turkey international dies aged 44 after suffering with a ruptured blood vessel which left him 'fighting for his life' two years ago

    - Ersen Martin played three matches for the Turkish National team from 2004-06
    - Multiple clubs in Turkey have taken to social media to send their condolences

    By DOMINIC HOGAN
    PUBLISHED: 09:29, 20 March 2024

Former Turkish international footballer Ersen Martin has passed away at the age of 44.

Martin had spells at some of Turkey's most prominent clubs, including Besiktas and Trabzonspor having come through the ranks as a striker at the academy of German club Nuremberg.

After retiring in 2013, Martin is thought to have suffered a ruptured aorta - the vessel that carries blood from the heart to the abdomen - in 2022 that left him hospitalised at Istanbul Siyami Ersek Heart Hospital, the player receiving treatment for some time before passing away.

An aortic rupture occurs after a tear in the layers of the blood vessel's wall, which causes blood to leak out, and is often as a result of a large aortic aneurysm that bursts, which in turn inhibits the pumping of blood around the body.

Reports from Turkey indicate that he was last intubated in hospital on March 10, before his death in hospital.

He had been under the care of Koksal Haloglu, CEO of a hospital facility in Bursa since the initial aortic rupture left him fighting for his life, Turkish outlets have reported.

However the monthly costs of the facility are thought to have been very high, with outlet Fanatik claiming that the player's family had reached out for help with covering the fees.

The publication also writes that neither the Turkish Football Federation, the Turkish Professional Footballers' Association nor a number of the former player's ex-team-mates offered financial support.

An article written in 2023 includes detail of an anonymous close friend who said: 'We support as much as we can, but only up to a certain point... We expect at least his former clubs to lend a helping hand.'

A number of Martin's former clubs have taken to social media to share their grief at the news of his passing, with Besiktas writing: 'We have learned with deep sadness that our former football player Ersen Martin has passed away.

'May God have mercy on Ersen Martin, we offer our condolences to his family, relatives and the Turkish sports community.'

Fellow ex-club Trabzonspor offered a similar statement: 'We have learned with deep sadness the news that our former football player Ersen Martin has passed away. May God have mercy on Ersen Martin who lost his life; We offer our condolences to his family, loved ones and community.'

Though the player never featured for Galatasaray, he had an affiliation with the team's head coach Okan Buruk from their time together in the national set-up.

Buruk had spent time with Martin at matches and chatted with him following his aortic rupture in 2022, and the club wrote: 'We have learned with deep sadness the news of the death of former national football player Ersen Martin.

'May God have mercy on Ersen Martin, and we offer our condolences to his grieving family, loved ones and the Turkish football community.'

Sivasspor - where Martin featured for 14 games - took the opportunity to re-live one of his greatest moments in their colours, posting his sole goal for the club on X, formerly Twitter.

And there was a tribute from Turkey's the Minister of Youth and Sports Osman Askin Bak, who said, 'I learned with great sadness the death of Ersen Martin, the popular name of our country's football and who also played for our national team.'

In total Martin's career ended having featured for 13 different clubs, including Huelva in Spain, and scored 101 goals and gave 28 assists in 375 games, as well as his three outings for the national side.

Listening to Cliff High in this first 20 minute audio digestion he says this year will be the year where people will start waking up as to what is really causing these deaths- The Jab .I think this audio should be here due to it has a direct result of every talented human being that we are seeing here on this thread. I lost 2 relatives in the 1st month of them taking the jab and now we wait.

Quote Belgian Grand Prix Rider Ona Dewaegenaere Died Unexpectedly

    Tue, 03/19/2024

    Belgian Youth Team Rider

Grown up in a horse loving family with grandfather Denis van Dingenen and mom, Grand Prix rider Denise van Dingenen, supporting her from the start, Ona was a long time Belgian youth team rider in her teenage years, beginning at FEI pony level.

The 1986 born Oldenburg gelding Apollo (by Akzent II x Tin Rocco x Vagabund) became her career starting dressage horse. He competed as a 6-year old with Ariane Pourtavaf in Germany before selling to the Van Dingenen family at the Oldenburg Auction in Vechta.

Trained by Gudrun de Cleermaekern, Ona and Apollo were fourth at the 1997 Belgian Junior Riders Championships and competed on the Belgian team at the 1997 European Young Riders Championships in Moorsele. She was fourth in the preliminary test but her spooky Apollo had a scare in the team test which made her drop in the ranking and not reach the finals. The team won bronze nonetheless. The next year they won team bronze again at the 1998 European Young Riders Championships in Hickstead. In 1999 the Belgian young riders with Ona included dominated the CDI-YR Bremen "Euro Future Cup" and was selected on the team again for the European Young Riders Championships. The team came fifth.

As a young senior she competed the KWPN bred Mircodion (by Uniform x Darwin) at international small tour level from 2003 till 2006 and KWPN mare Warina Utopia (by OO Seven x Ferro) from 2008 till 2014. Nationally she also rode Belgian bred Floris van de Helle (by Fiderhit x Weltart) at that time before sending the horse to Patrick van der Meer.

    Dabanos D'O4

Ona's most successful dressage horse was the Belgian warmblood gelding Dabanos d'O4 (by Abanos x Donnerschlag x Lurano), bred by Victor Vansant in Geel, Belgium.

Ona on Dabanos d'O4 in 2014

The hot and sensitive yet very talented Dabanos made his international show debut at small tour level with Ona at the 2012 CDI Hagen. Two months later they moved to Grand Prix level at the CDI Compiègne and finished fourth at the 2012 Belgian Grand Prix Championships and sixth in 2013. They competed at CDI's in Rotterdam, Deauville, Leudelange, Drachten, Bremen, Roosendaal, Compiegne, Deauville, Kapellen, Roosendaal, Nieuw en St. Joosland, Hagen and Zandhoven over the years. She was long listed for Belgian team selection for the 2014 World Equestrian Games after placing sixth at the 2014 Belgian Grand Prix Championships. Their last show was the CDI Roosendaal in May 2015.

After that she passed on the horse to her trainer Jeannette Haazen, who was highly successful with him for two years at international GP level until 2018 when Ona suddenly decided to end the collaboration. Dabanos was brought home and ended up in 2020 with Belgian young GP rider Alexa Fairchild.

Ona's last international dressage horse was the home bred 2007 born KWPN gelding Calucci Utopia (by Voice out of Warina Utopia) which she premiered at the 2015 CDI Lier and then two years later rode one more CDI with in Roosendaal in June 2017.

    Horse Loving

Ona had two children, Yari and Tobi, with ex-husband Geert van den Branden.
The 18-year old Yari van den Branden is a successful show jumping rider. He was member of the gold medal winning team at the 2021 European Children Show Jumping Championships in Vilamoura. Son Tobi is an football fan.

Ona died suddenly in Edegem (BEL) from suspected cardiac arrest on 14 March.

The funeral is on Saturday 30 March in her home town Schilde.

Quote Heart attack survivor thanks Durham staff for saving his life

Posted on March 20, 2024 by Vaseline

DURHAM, NC — A man recovering from a heart attack got the chance to thank the people who saved his life.

Steve Martin’s heart stopped beating March 8 while playing pickleball at the Senior Recreation Center on Campus Hills.

On Friday, Martin and his wife thanked the Durham Parks and Recreation staff who helped revive him.

“I wanted to meet them, give them a hug and say ‘thank you,’” Martin said.

Park and recreation workers began CPR, used an AED and called 911. Martin was unresponsive for eight to ten minutes as staff continued to work.

Parks and Recreation staff are trained to assist in the event of a sudden health crisis.

“It was a normal day and in the end they saved a life,” Martin said.

Martin said his partner was about to serve as they played doubles.

“I said, ‘Just give me a minute because I’m a little dizzy,’” Martin said. “I sat down on the field and that’s the last thing I remembered.”

Martin said he could have died if it hadn’t been for Durham’s staff. He said he came to as the ambulance pulled into the emergency room. He was in the hospital for a week.

The Martin family thanked staff at a recent Durham City Council meeting. Martin’s wife and his son thanked the group in a letter.

“You are the reason my father is still alive,” the letter reads in part.

Martin explained how he picked up pickleball from his wife.

“My wife picked it up first,” Martin said. “She’s been retired longer than me, so she picked it up and she kept talking about it, so I started playing.”

Martin said he plays pickleball three times a week and does yoga twice a week.

“I’ve always been active and my personal goals call for 10,000 steps a day, and I have no problem with that,” he said.

Martin said he plans to play pickleball again once he is cleared by doctors.

Quote Matteo Berrettini almost collapses 'in very worrying scenes' during his Miami Open defeat by Andy Murray - but returns to PLAY ON after a medical time-out, as temperatures rise to 26ºC

    - Andy Murray staged a comeback to defeat the Italian on Wednesday 4-6 6-3 6-4

Matteo Berrettini appeared to almost collapse at the Miami Open on Wednesday afternoon as temperatures soared to around 26ºC during his first-round match against Andy Murray.

Despite the worrying moment, Berrettini was able to continue after a medical time-out, but couldn't capitalise on his fast start having claimed the first set 6-4. His opponent would ultimately level the match, before booking his place in the next round of the tournament, winning 4-6 6-3 6-4.

At 5-2 in the second set, the Italian, who is ranked 142nd in the world, appeared to walk to the baseline and prepare to serve at the two-time Wimbledon champion.

While bouncing a ball, he appeared unsteady on his feet and worryingly seemed to fall sideways while clutching his head. He steadied himself with his racket, before putting his hands on his hands on his knees.

Berrettini was deemed OK to continue after appearing to receive medical attention on the side of the court, with the 27-year-old having his blood pressure taken before taking on some fluids and energy supplements.

Former British tennis player Anabel Croft said to Sky Sports: 'Very worrying scenes. Honestly I've never seen somebody look as if they were about to keel over.

'You wondered what was going on, I thought he was going to faint.

'He did well to steady himself and not crash to the surface, where he may have done some damage to his body or his head.

'It came over him so quickly. We've talked about the conditions, Laura [Robson] told us it hadn't been quite as hot as the qualifying, when another player nearly fainted, but it can suddenly happen.'

Tim Henman also added: 'That was so unexpected.

'Berrettini has been playing good tennis and moving well, and all of a sudden looked extremely wobbly on his feet.'

Quote Pistons rookie Ausar Thompson being treated for blood clots, out for remainder of season

    By Kurt Helin
    Published March 21, 2024

Two Pistons starters and critical members of the franchise’s young core — Ausar Thompson and Isaiah Stewart — are out for the rest of the season due to medical issues.

The more concerning one is Thompson, with the rookie being out “while being treated for a blood clot,” the team announced. Thompson had missed the previous five games with what was only called a “medical issue.” Clots can be a very serious concern that has ended the careers of multiple athletes, most famously NBA champion and star Chris Bosh. However, other players are able to get treatment and bounce back with the situation managed, such as Brandon Ingram (who was shut down for a time because of clots in 2019).

For Thompson, this appears to be more manageable. The team said he “has been cleared to resume conditioning and will begin non-contact basketball activities at the conclusion of the regular season” with a planned ramp-up so he is ready to go at training camp next fall.

Stewart is out with a strained hamstring, something without long-term consequences but takes time to heal.

Coach Monty Williams sounded optimistic speaking about Thompson and Stewart on Wednesday night, via Omari Sankofa II of the Detroit Free Press.

“With Ausar, I’m just glad that the doctors caught it and from all of the information that I’ve gotten, they’re handling it in a — it’s a medical situation but I’m glad they caught it,” Monty Williams said pregame on Wednesday. “With (Stewart), they’re both big blows to the team. These are two guys that were starters for us and certainly helped us in a number of ways defensively, in every facet of the game. Both are developing players that were huge-impact players for our team. It’s a tough blow for sure.”

At 12-57, the Pistons are out of postseason contention with the second-worst record in the league this season.

By Web Desk March 23, 2024

A player passed away while training at the age of 24.

Guillermo Denis Beltrán, the 24-year-old Colombian striker, was on the field attending a training session with Real Santa Cruz, a top-tier Bolivian football club.

The Colombian player began to feel unwell and collapsed shortly after. He died of respiratory arrest, Real Santa Cruz said, issuing a statement on his death.

The Colombian striker's teammates told the media that he felt nausea before collapsing. The club's medical team immediately kickstarted efforts to revive him, but failed. Doctors called in an ambulance as they tried to revive him.

His sudden death left his teammates and the football community in shock.

Real Santa Cruz director Adolfo Soria Galvarro recounted the harrowing event, stating, "He was training as usual and then he collapsed. They tried to resuscitate him but he died as he was being moved to a clinic."

The football community, including the Bolivian Football Federation, expressed condolences to the family.

The Real Santa Cruz football club is situated in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, a city around 850 kilometers east of La Paz. The club is mourning the loss of Beltrán, who joined them just last year from Paraguay's Rubio Ñu. Previously, he had started his career at Colombia's Atletico Nacional.

Fernando Costa, the president of the Bolivian Football Federation, offered his condolences to the bereaved family. He assured support for both the club and Beltrán's family. He also announced that there would be an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Beltrán's untimely death.

Beltrán scored one goal in 21 matches for Real Santa Cruz in the Bolivian championship.

Quote Minnesota Man Tragically Dies After Surf Lesson in Puerto Rico

    Jade Eckardt
    Thu, March 21, 2024

Another person has passed away following a surf lesson while on vacation with his family.

A 51-year-old man named Ben King died on March 13 shortly after taking a surf lesson "with a professional surfer" at La Pared beach in Luquillo, on Puerto Rico's northeast coast, according to reports.

The Star Tribune reported that King "was pulled from the water by a tourist and taken by ambulance to a hospital but could not be resuscitated."

King was an attorney, husband, and father of two from New Prague, Minnesota.

    According to the story:

"After the lessons were over, King was wading in chest-deep water when he started to struggle, according to reports.

"Another tourist, Jason Igielski, was able to swim out to King and bring him back to shore despite the conditions.

"Three other tourists gave King CPR until an ambulance took him to a hospital in Fajardo, about 6 miles away. A police report said strong currents in the area were to blame.

"It's not unusual for swimmers to encounter strong tides at some beaches in Puerto Rico, according to the local tourism authority, and King's death along with several others in recent weeks have renewed calls to warn swimmers about riptides and ocean currents.

"Some local organizations have also called for a lifeguard corps to be established. Some 21 people drowned in Puerto Rico last year."

King's passing follows the late February death of a tourist who passed away following a surfing accident at Apple Bay in Tortola, according to The Virgin Islands Daily News.

    Rest in peace, Ben.

[Editor's Note: According to a representative from an area surf school who contacted SURFER, King did not participate in the surf lessons that his family enjoyed.]

Quote Gordon Singleton, Canada's 1st track cycling world champion, dies at 67

Niagara Falls, Ont., native set 3 world records in 24 hours in October 1980

The Canadian Press · Posted: Mar 25, 2024

Former Canadian track cycling star Gordon Singleton has died. He was 67.

Cycling Canada confirmed on Monday he had been battling prostate cancer.

"We are incredibly saddened to learn of Gordon's passing," said Cycling Canada CEO Matthew Jeffries. "One of Canadian cycling's greatest champions and most gracious ambassadors, Gordon was a trailblazer who inspired so many Canadian athletes who have followed in his footsteps.

"His accomplishments on the bike were legendary and perhaps surpassed only by his continued contributions, engagement and generosity as an active and valued member of the Canadian cycling community over the past 40 years. He will be dearly missed but never forgotten."

The Niagara Falls, Ont., native was the first Canadian to ever claim a gold medal at the track cycling world championships in 1982, winning in the keirin.

He also held three world records, having set them all in a 24-hour span from October 9-10 in 1980. They came in the 200-metre flying start, 500 flying start and 1,000 standing start months after being named to Team Canada for the 1980 Olympics before Canada joined an American-led boycott of the Moscow Games that year.

Singleton also competed in the 1976 Olympics, finishing ninth in the 1,000 sprint. He went on to win gold in both the sprint and the 1,000 time trial at the 1979 Pan American Games.

Singleton, who was named to the Order of Canada in 1986, was also a gold medallist in the sprint and bronze medallist in the 1,000 time trial at the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton.

"With the passing of Gordon Singleton, Canada and the sport of cycling have lost one of the true giants," added Mark Collins, chair of Cycling Canada's board of directors. "Seeing him flying around the track was electrifying at a formative time for the sport of cycling in Canada; Gordon will be truly missed.

"An Olympian, a world champion, and a world-record holder, he was a pioneer whose shoulders our team will forever stand on whenever we pull the maple leaf jersey on and ride for Canada."

Quote Tragedy in France: A 13-year-old boy dies during a match in Sens

    21. March 2024

He suffered a heart attack, leaving the public in shock.

A tragedy has struck in France! A young footballer from the Antanta Paron Saint-Clement club, aged 13, died from a heart attack during a U15 team match against the Genes Senonez club.

The young footballer passed away in the town of Sens, and the drama unfolded when the boy felt a sharp pain in his chest and asked to be substituted. Shortly after sitting on the bench, he collapsed, according to France Bleu.

The president of the Yonne football district, Christophe Caiet, explains that the coach suggested the player come and rest on the bench due to the pain.

"His coach suggested he come and rest on the bench. A minute later, he fell to the ground while still conscious," he said.

Emergency services transported the teenager to the hospital, where, unfortunately, death was declared 15 minutes later. The club then organized psychological support for the young footballers who experienced trauma due to the event.
