I love the movies (and twin peaks) by David Lynch, although I must say that hes most recent ones (Lost Highway & Inland Empire) aren't exactly my favorites. The funny thing about movies like his that deal mostly in the category of surrealism is that you can never be sure if there is a message/meaning your not perceptive enough to grasp or if there's any real message/meaning at all.

    Dramma della gelosia
A scene from the Ettore Scola's film.

The dialogue is more or less as follows.
-Red Bull, do you read me ?..... We have come to Mindanao's beach.... ....
+ Hey!,could you go play elsewhere? (Mastroianni)
    - The beach is yours ?.....So?.....
+ ......They are playing the Americans. You Fools!
    - When you see the yellow people, kill them all. Any questions? Go! !......................................(they sign all)..... following exchange of insults.

I am a little surprised that no one has mentioned Mulholland Drive as one of Lynch's best. Maybe it is probably just personal preference, but it is probably one of my fave films of all time, taking some of the ideas of Lost Highway and giving them a new setting. It definitely has some references to the Hollywood "machine" but has maybe less commentary on the conspiratorial and more on the spiritual, IMO. Like all of his films it is somewhat subjective, metaphorical, dark and twisted but I know of few films to interpret the experience of a "newly deceased" soul, balancing karma in a illusionary purgatory, which (I feel) is the point to the whole story. The scene where Rebecca Del Rio sings the Spanish acapella version of Roy Orbison's "Crying" seems to me to be the synopsis of the whole film.

You're right about that. I've seen it 3 times and still don't know what's the point. That's why I love Lynch.. You just never know what's going to happen next and you can watch his films over and over again and still find something new. Or different aspects about what he's trying to say. The Straight Story is only the exception I think..

Btw guys, have you seen Rabbits? That's really weird piece of work and somehow very disturbing.

I surely have. Just started watching The X Files again from the beginning. I've seen them all 3 times already, but the show is still watchable. Found a Rabbits clip on youtube.

Mullholand Drive was originally a pilot episode for a series ala twin peaks, the series got axed, Lynch decided to pack all the ideas into the pilot/movie. This is why it's a little bit condensed and indecypherable at points.

I heard Lynch talk about Lost Highway during an interview somewhere, and he was bringing up terms like 'transgenetic memory' which actually inform the more esoteric parts of the movie quite well.
