Default Japan's radiation scare hugely overblown by western media

    From Ken Adachi, Editor
    http://educate-yourself.org/cn/japan...s19mar11.shtml
    March 19, 2011

I visited a number of Japanese web sites yesterday to determine how much radiation is being reported around the Daiichi nuclear facility in Fukushima prefecture and also what the recorded levels were in Tokyo. As expected, the radiation levels in Tokyo BRIEFLY rose just slightly above normal background levels (0.03-0.04 u Gy/ h) on March 15, 2011 to an INSIGNIFICANT level of 0.809 MICRO Gray (or Sieverts), but only AVERAGED 0.109 u Gy/ h for the entire 24 hour peroid. On March 16, the AVERAGE radiation level in Tokyo fell to 0.0719 u Gy/ h and further fell to an average of 0.0511 u Gy/ h on March 17. The average background level of radiation in Tokyo on March 18, 2011 was 0.0484 u Gy/ h.

These numbers are no greater than the NORMAL background radiation level for Tokyo, yet seemingly thousands of westerners are streaming out of Tokyo as fast as possible based on the reckless abuse of the word "radiation" by western media outlets.

Please bear in mind that the highest reading recorded on March 15, 2011 was LESS than ONE micro Gray. If you flew round trip from Tokyo to New York you would absorb about 200 microGrays of radiation. A chest X-ray delivers about 50 microGrays; a stomach X-ray about 600 mircroGrays; and a CAT scan about 6900 microGrays. The yearly background radiation received in Brazil is about 10,000 microGrays while the yearly background radiation received in Tokyo is about 400 microGrays.

    What is "Radiation"?

Many people do not understand that there is a difference between NUCLEAR, ionizing radiation and other forms of "radiation" such as electro-magnetic frequency (EMF) radiation or solar radiation or thermal radiation. For the Japan situation, we are only concerned with ionizing, nuclear radiation This activity is due to particles or energy rays which are being thrown off from the nucleus of atoms undergoing nuclear fission. In nuclear fission, atoms are undergoing a transmutation from one element of the Perodic Table into other, different elements on the Perodic Table. Nuclear reactors break down uranium 235 down into different elements and release heat, radioactive particles and energy waves in the process. Traditional physics teaches that any element above lead in the Perodic Table exhibits ionizing radioactivity.

There are three types of waves being emitted with nuclear radiation:

    1. Alpha waves: consists of two neutrons and two protons being emmited from the nuclei of radioactive material. They move relatively slowly and can be stopped with something as thin as paper or clothing.

    2. Beta waves: are special nuclei electrons which were originally paired with positrons to make a neutron. When the neutron is split, the electrons fly off as Beta waves. They travel at nearly the speed of light. They can travel farther than alpha waves and can penetrate paper or clothing, but can be shielded from with metal or dense material like concrete or stone.

    3. Gamma waves do not contain particles, but instead are pure energy waves, or radiant energy. They are similar to X-rays and can cause the greatest damage when considering the ill effects of nuclear radiation. They can penetrate most substances, but lose their power with the inverse ratio to distance from the source.

The radiation from these three types of waves is limited to the immediate vicinity of the nuclear reactor since this is the source of the nuclear fission process.

In the case of an atomic bomb blast, tons of radioactive material are thrown high up into the stratosphere by the chimnney effect of the mushroom cloud and the radioactive particles are carried along by the jet stream to distant locations. Same with Chernobyl, there was a substantial explosion (due to sabotage) that threw a great deal of radioactive material high into the atmosphere, which allowed for a wider distribution of radioactive fallout. But that has not been the case so far with Daiichi and there's no reason to believe such an explosion will occur.

Here is a link to a Tokyo radiation monitoring site located in the Shinjuku area. Note that the highest reading occured briefly on March 15, but quickly returned to near- normal levels for every day since. This chart covers up to March 19, but you can access the latest chart by visiting the link.

Western Media Scare Tactics Emphasize "Radiation" and Percentages

I heard a woman reporting from Tokyo for Free Speech Radio News (FSRN) on March 18, 2011 over KPFK radio (Los Angeles). She was clearly an anti-nuclear energy activist and wanted to hype the radiation story through the roof by declaring that "the radiation levels in Tokyo had risen 22% today" blah, blah, blah.

But she didn't provide any hard numbers to support her story, only PERCENTAGES to sell her agenda. If the normal, average background radiation level in Tokyo is around 0.04 micro Grays and then elevates to 0.08 micro Grays, that works out to a ONE HUNDRED PERCENT increase in the background radiation level, but it's STILL utterly INSIGNIFICANT. To suggest (by omission) that the radiation dangers to Tokyo were threatening, when no threat actually existed, is flat out deception. And that's what I found to be the case with most AM and FM radio stations reporting on the Japan radiation story.

Tohoku University in Sendai City, Miyagi prefecture, about 100 km north of Daiichi, reported background average reading of 0.13 micro Grays on March 19.

What a very refreshing post to wake up to.

Of course I'm tied up with this at the moment. Don't feel safe enough to return to Tokyo but at the same time I know loads of people that are doing fine. I asked a friend of mine who is living in Wellington and is booked to perform in Tokyo next week if he was still coming over to do it.. he said...

" of course I'm still coming over, even it means I return looking like the ready brek kid "

    This made me laugh.

Anyway thanks for that Shinjuku link and this very positive post.

    Ski-

@SKIBADABOMSKI What is important is that you followed your heart.

If you do that you will be in the right place at the right time.

Who knows the reason, perhaps you are where you are for reasons other than radiation? Perhaps you were needed in a place so that you could provide a unique form of assistance to others who were motivated more by fear than guidance?

    Who knows?

The thing is - follow your heart!

I think the radiation scare is, if anything, hugely underreported. There is much at this link, a compilation of many different articles on the coverup, HAARP's role in the earthquake, UFOs seen over Japan before and after and more
    http://www.earthrainbownetwork.com/A...akening1.htm#2

    AND
    The following website:
    http://doctorapsley.com/RadiationTherapy.aspx
has all you could want to know about the dangers of radiation and how it has been minimized in the mainstream media, such as:
Q: What is the Petkau Effect?
A: Right alongside the biologically significant levels of Iodide-131 arriving onto our shores, the extremely low levels of radioactive metals Barium-140, Cesium-137, Plutonium-244, Strontium-90, Tellurium-132, Uranium-235/234 and Yttrium-91/90 are of primary concern for the short or long term.

Once lodged into our tissues in extremely low levels due to The Petkau Effect, all will induce immediate lethal tissue ionization (via lipid peroxides) to our immune system and hormonal producing pathways.18 Unless our tissues posses adequate reserves of antioxidants and innate resistance, over decades this will resurrect itself into deranged genetic behavior (via mutated DNA), dramatically increasing the risks for developing cancer.

Here is more (go to http://doctorapsley.com/RadiationTherapy.aspx for much, much more ) from Dr. Apsley's website:
    Radiation Toxicity Antidotes
    (C) 2010 by John W. Apsley, II, MD(E), DC - www.doctorapsley.com

    Here you will learn:
Ø What radioactive elements are the threat from Fukushima
Ø What the Government is not telling you
Ø What is The Petkau Effect
Ø What are the specific health risks to you & your family
Ø What the sequence to these threats will be over the next 5 years
Ø What history has taught us
Ø What misinformation are we being told?
Ø What you & your family can easily and effectively do to potentially overcome these risks
           NOW!

Q: What specifically is arriving in the air we breathe and unto U.S. soils and water supplies from radioactive Fall-Out emanating from Fukushima's nuclear power plant meltdown?
A: Right alongside the biologically significant levels of Iodide-131 arriving onto our shores, the extremely low levels of radioactive metals Barium-140, Cesium-137, Plutonium-244, Strontium-90, Tellurium-132, Uranium-235/234 and Yttrium-91/90 are of primary concern for the short or long term.

Once lodged into our tissues in extremely low levels due to The Petkau Effect, all will induce immediate lethal tissue ionization (via lipid peroxides) to our immune system and hormonal producing pathways.18 Unless our tissues posses adequate reserves of antioxidants and innate resistance, over decades this will resurrect itself into deranged genetic behavior (via mutated DNA), dramatically increasing the risks for developing cancer.19, 86

The tragedy is that our Government is not giving us the full information of risks to low level radiation, which may be equal to or even to levels less than to those commonly referred to as "normal background radiation levels." This false sense of security given to us by government spokespersons (usually with an entire alphabet following their name) is the hallmark of unscientific constructs. For example, nowhere in the mass media or from our government officials is there open and honest discussions with the American public regarding the phenomenon of the Petkau Effect, which applies strictly to low levels of radiation. 87

For scientists, the Petkau Effect may be illustrated as follows:18, 22, 64
A long term exposure of extremely low radiation (i.e., one-ten millionth of a rad) was found to be 100 BILLION times MORE lethal than a short term exposure to exceedingly high level radiation (i.e., 10,000 rads per minute). As it turns out, Petkau discovered that at exceedingly high radiation levels, the abundant free radicals generated in tissues tended to cancel each other out before they could do cellular damage. But at extremely low levels of radiation, these same free radicals - produced in minuscule quantities - remain unchecked. And any steady stream of unchecked free-radicals will efficiently and lethally cleave lipid cellular membranes like a hot knife slicing through butter once they overwhelm and exhaust cellular antioxidant defenses. This dramatically illustrates the non-linear aspects of dose (rads) to lethality. Most scientists specializing in the field of nuclear medicine are unaware of this fact. And most think strictly in terms of genetic damage, while the above presents its lethal affects upon cell membranes and only secondarily to the genetic core.

Q: What is the no-spin truth regarding our health risks arising from this radioactive Fall-Out?
A: For the short term: The Petkau Effect is what we must all now familiarize ourselves with so that we can effectively combat this new threat to our health and protect our children without fear. We can do this; we just have to get ourselves properly informed to the no-spin truth, and then go to work to solve this crisis with select nutrients rich in antioxidants and special regenerative repair factors proven to be highly effective against radiation poisoning.
A: Over the long term: Cesium-137 will concentrate in the fatty tissues, Iodine-131 in the thyroid gland, breast tissues and ovaries, Strontium-90 and Uranium-235/234 in the bone, and Uranium-235/234 and Plutonium-244 in the liver. Even to this very day, the children in Belarus are suffering from toxic overloads of Cesium-137 in their bodies due to the 1986 Chernobyl incident.83, 84 To avoid this, these radioactive metals need to be removed from the cells NOW.

More specifically, according to the best evidence to date due for North America, over the next five (5) years this may/will lead to significantly greater risks toA), (B), 18, 19, 22, 85, 88
    Ø Pregnant women for premature births;
    Ø Our infants for pneumonia, influenza and septicemia;
    Ø Our children for thyroid cancer, leukemia and learning defects;
    Ø Our women for breast cancer;
Ø Our adults and senior citizens most at risk for immune deficiency crises; and
Ø Our general population for various forms of chronic degenerative diseases.

For example, more realistic figures of mortality (death) and morbidity (injury) related to the Chernobyl incident which confirms the above, comes from a top expert, later blacklisted for his whistle blowingB), 41
"(Dr. Ernest J. Sternglass of the University of Pittsburgh) presented at the First Global Radiation Victims Conference in New York in September 1987, impressively conveyed the seriousness of the radiation problem. The infant mortality rate following the arrival of the Chernobyl fallout in early May of 1986 showed a 54% increase in June 1986 in the Pacific region of the United States. Washington State had the highest rate in the region with a 245% increase in deaths per thousand live births. California was next highest with a 48% increase in infant mortality as compared to June of the year before. These high rates lasted for July and August. Massachusetts led the nation in post-Chernobyl increase of infant mortality rate with an increase of 900% per thousand live births! Massachusetts also had a decline of 70% in newborns. The rate of live births also decreased throughout the country in response to the Chernobyl fallout. The US fertility rate decreased 8.3% in July and August to the lowest level ever observed in United States history."

Q: What is the sequence to these risks we will face in the coming days from this radioactive Fall-Out?
A: The Fall-Out will present in THREE forms or threats to our health:

    1. The first will be the immediate airborne threat over the next several weeks heading into the U.S. For comparative analysis that may pertain to fall-out coming out of a Fukushima Meltdown, John Christensen working as a staff scientist in Berkeley Lab’s Earth Sciences Division has co-authored a study describing how lead pollution travels from Asia to the U.S.. His research - based in part upon photos taken by NASA's Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor - was recently published in the journal Environmental Science & Technology (see fallout map to immediate left).42

Depending upon which "starting date" you use (the date of the first detection of radioactive cesium being airborne or when helicopter crews from the USS Ronald Reagan were first documented to have been exposed, i.e., March 14th, 2011), we can expect the West Coast of the U.S. to begin to receive at least minimal fallout within 7 to 10 days or possibly on the weekend of March 18th - 20th, 2011 This may mean that by the 1st of April, the entire region of North America will have undergone the first round of fall-out exposure, even if at undetectable levels in many areas. As the upper air currents repetitively cycle around the globe over and over again, the stock of radioactive airborne materials will fall out as part of normal rainfall or as simple dust particles. For supporting images regarding timeline for fall-out reaching the U.S. West Coast, see below. The areas marked in yellow indicate winds traveling is excess of 60 - 80 knots per hour. At these rates of speed, once the fall-out enters into the Jet Stream, the below graphic strongly supports an arrival of the first tier of fall-out into the U.S. Western shoreline for the weekend of March 18th - 20th.

In fact, it has just been confirmed as of Friday, March 18th, 2011, that low levels of radiation above normal have reached our Western shores.

    See: http://www.canada.com/sports/radiati...251/story.html

More specifically, students at the University of Washington are now documenting Fall-Out in the NW. They have found radioactive Cesium-137/134, Iodide-133/132/131, and Tellurium-132 to date.

    See: http://www.technologyreview.com/blog/arxiv/26571/

Furthermore, to join in such a worthy tracking effort on an amateur basis, see: http://www.radiationnetwork.com/

    2. The next threat will be when it enters into our water supply and food chain over the many weeks and perhaps months ahead.

    3. The last threat stems from the extremely low levels of radiation which become ever present due to radioactive materials burrowing into our tissues. This will be by far the more deadly and insidious form of radiation poisoning to those living in North America, and is properly called The Petkau Effect. The Petkau Effect is in many ways identical to what happens when underground fires ignite that cannot be extinguished. Indeed, there are locations around the world where abandoned coal mines went ablaze and simply cannot be put out. Some of these have smoldered slowly out of control for 30 years or more. The same may occur within our very own bodies when radioactive iodide, uranium, plutonium, cesium and strontium enter our lungs as we breathe or in through our digestive tract when we eat or drink contaminated foods or water. The Petkau Effect applies to chronic low level exposures and accrues over a long time frame because these radioactive materials will continue to emit toxic ionizing radiation for the weeks, months and even years ahead.(A), 22

In other words, for now you don't need to worry about acute spikes in radiation which are fleeting, since few will ever experience such an event. You should be concerned about tiny scattered particles that settle into our tissues undetected, and not worry about amounts sufficient to trigger Geiger Counter alarms going off at airport check stations. The tiny amounts of exposure which are more likely to occur give off constant ionizing radiation that burns us at the molecular level over many years before causing a diagnosable issue.19

Also, the cloth-paper masks that many people use around their faces are useless to protect from these tiny particles. Sorry folks! You would need advanced charcoal filters that are quite bulky and more expensive to achieve any meaningful "up-front" protection for your lungs. Therefore, be forewarned that any official positions claiming that, "only low levels of radiation have been detected and therefore pose no real health threat to the American public," are suspect and should be viewed as phraseology more properly akin to either misinformation or outright propaganda.(B), 18

For example, at least one nuclear physicist appearing on a cable news channel on March 18th has already reported that the amount of radiation that has landed on U.S. soil would expose those proximal to it to "about the same amount of radiation we receive when we get a single dental X-ray." Well, excuse me, but once we ingest these particles, they continuously bombard us with radiation for days, weeks, months and even years before being eliminated. This is totally unlike that of a single dental X-ray which only exposes us to a one time milliseconds of exposure. Obviously this scientist has not yet taken the time to review The Petkau Effect.

No doubt many scientists will continue to compare apples to oranges by comparing diagnostic X-ray exposures to trace particles entering into our food chain and then our bodies from Fukushima fall-out. Or worse, is to hear our officials make statements to the effect that, "Only low levels of radiation have been detected, and these are well within government 'permissible' standards which poses no risk to the general public." All these comparisons or standards are the hallmark of unscientific constructs, since the government readily admits there is no such thing as safe levels of radiation.66 Putting The Petkau Effect aside for the moment, all additional amounts of radiation compound the already harmful levels in the environment. Since the beginning of the first above ground nuclear bomb testing, and then later the contributions from secret nuclear reactor radioactive releases and accidents, collectively their radioactive Fall-Out isotopes influence our environment and food chain (via their half-life) for decades (i.e., Cesium-137 and Strontium-90), if not tens of thousands of years (i.e., Uranium-235/234 and Plutonium-244).66 Most importantly, to my knowledge no one has compared The Petkau Effect, rad for rad, against extremely short diagnostic X-ray exposures in side by side tissue or animal studies. As clearly stated above, lethality is not linear in terms of dose of rads when The Petkau Effect is in play.

Q: What has history already taught us that is essential for us now to use as our reference points.
A: History has taught us to "hope for the best," but "plan for the worst" and to educate oneself better than the politicians or their official scientific spokespersons!

Since WWII, over 555,000 TRILLION picocuries of radiation have been released into the Earth's biosphere with a half life exceeding 10,000 years of toxicity.18 When one considers the emerging evidence linking so many autoimmune diseases to environmental toxic exposures (including within war zones69) and UV radiation, this helps to explain the dramatic rise, for example, not only of Cancer, but also Hashimoto's Disease,51 Hypothyroidism Type 2, Diabetes Type 2,50 Colitis, Crohn's Disease, Lupus, Scleroderma, ALS,72, 73 MS,52 R.A., Osteoporosis, Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Universal Allergic Reactors, Alzheimer's Disease, infertility, Autism, Low Birth Weight, the rise in Birth Defects, Infant Failure to Thrive Syndromes (i.e., SIDS),  etc...53, 54 With the exception of radon, specific links to endemics of autoimmune diseases and environmental regions of radioactivity are not being investigated or reported out of our government agencies, nor their official designated scientific agencies, which suggests a policy of cover-up.(B) Only emerging independent studies performed by not-for-profit dedicated scientists track these associations with cancer in humans which may arise from chronic, low level radiation poisoning.(B), (F)  The under reporting of untoward effects stemming out of the Chernobyl incident is a classic example.

    See: www.radiation.org for further information.

Q: What misinformation or misapplied science is being reported by the main stream pundits?
A: Many scientists enlisted as expert spokespersons in the mass media are either intentionally or unintentionally confusing similar scientific phenomena as identical scientific phenomena.

Currently there are a group of esteemed physicists who are suggesting that low levels of radiation from multiple sources, can be beneficial. They are citing some very compelling evidence which suggests that cancer rates can actually go down, not up, with long term, low level exposures to toxic radioactive nuclei such as cobalt or cesium. They also link this kind of radiation to the principles of "hormesis" something of which Eclectic Physicians are quite familiar with. And finally, they cite mineral rich hot springs which are known to emit low level radiation from a naturally occurring radioisotope called radon.30 In fact it is true that the hot springs in Attica, Lesvos and Ikaria Greece, and select hot springs in Misasa Hot Springs District of Japan are famous for healings reportedly arising from proper use of these therapeutic waters. These springs typically present short term exposures to folks, and with levels of radon that have been naturally encountered by human beings for milliennia. However, harmful sequelae appear to be associated with (A) longer exposure periods coupled to (B) higher levels of mixed radioactive contaminants (i.e., uranium plus radon), a sign of possible cumulative deleterious effects.56. 57, 58, 59, 60, 61

This illustrates what happens when nuclear physicists are looking in the wrong direction, even if for the right reason. Chernobyl and Fukushima are not identical in any way to natural radon exposures found in therapeutic hot springs. But their respective fall-out could compound the effects of the natural radon emissions in unknown ways. So, we must avoid forming premature conclusions which are not applicable to the actual, full scale context of this latest incident. Therefore in my book, there is no such thing as safe, low level exposures to "man-made" sources of radiation.(F), 55, 66

Indeed, to date, I am unaware of any positive health benefits attributable to the Chernobyl incident or exposures to depleted uranium (DU) such as happened in the U.S. Gulf-Wars.67, 68, 69, 70, 71 If any do exist, please send me the reports. I am aware of at least one report of how wild animals in and around Chernobyl have made a comeback, but I find it uncompelling. For example, after Reindeer herds which inhabited Chernobyl's fall-out zones ate contaminated lichen, they all were exterminated because of their exceedingly high tissue levels of Cesium-137, and this is still a serious problem for the children in the region today.63, 82, 83, 84

Furthermore, attempts have been made to grossly underestimate the death rate from the Chernobyl incident, down to just 31 individuals! So, let's get this straight. Cancer rates are much higher around nuclear power plants which are fully operational, and yet a meltdown occurring at a nuclear power plant causes only 31 deaths (see graph to immediate right)???(B)

JAPAN EARTHQUAKE AND NUCLEAR CRISIS RELATED LINKS

[Editor's Note: I discovered this page from reading Comments posted to the Yahoo.com article link seen below concerning erroneous and excessively high radiation readings initially reported from the damaged Daiichi Nuclear facility. I plan to examine the contents of this article in greater depth as I believe it reveals hints which may begin to identify the tactical nuclear explosive SABOTAGE that was actually responsible for the explosion that was attributed to hydrogen gas. The 1800+ high radiation levels reported in the seawater and the iodine radiation reported in some Tokyo drinking water supplies are ALSO due to intentional SABOTAGE contamination, in my opinion, and has NOTHING to do with "leakage" from Daiichi. I and ZS Livingstone review these sabotage suspicions in our March 24, 2001 radio interview with Don Nicoloff....Ken Adachi]

Make no mistake about it radiation, deforms and poisons and kills but the levels have to be so exceedingly high that there would be no debate about it. Instead the mainstream media seems to be in a feeding frenzy about what is happening in Japan. I believe for two reasons, it makes for great headlines and eventually it may be a vehicle to control where and how people move about the country. I am not talking about in Japan but in some other false event where the PTB want to be in control of peoples movements and behaviors!

Unfortunately, the levels DO NOT have to be exceedingly high to be dangerous
    .
This was the point I was trying to make in post # 9 in this thread.
"A long term exposure of extremely low radiation (i.e., one-ten millionth of a rad) was found to be 100 BILLION times MORE lethal than a short term exposure to exceedingly high level radiation (i.e., 10,000 rads per minute). As it turns out, Petkau discovered that at exceedingly high radiation levels, the abundant free radicals generated in tissues tended to cancel each other out before they could do cellular damage. But at extremely low levels of radiation, these same free radicals - produced in minuscule quantities - remain unchecked. "

    Excerpts from

    http://doctorapsley.com/RadiationTherapy.aspx

Q: What specifically is arriving in the air we breathe and unto U.S. soils and water supplies from radioactive Fall-Out emanating from Fukushima's nuclear power plant meltdown?
A: Right alongside the biologically significant levels of Iodide-131 arriving onto our shores, the extremely low levels of radioactive metals Barium-140, Cesium-137, Plutonium-244, Strontium-90, Tellurium-132, Uranium-235/234 and Yttrium-91/90 are of primary concern for the short or long term.

For scientists, the Petkau Effect may be illustrated as follows:

Even to this very day, the children in Belarus are suffering from toxic overloads of Cesium-137 in their bodies due to the 1986 Chernobyl incident.83, 84 To avoid this, these radioactive metals need to be removed from the cells NOW."
Fortunately, there are plenty of things we can do to protect ourselves. Protocols and suggested remedies at:

    Radiation Network.
Welcome to RadiationNetwork.com, home of the National Radiation Map, depicting environmental radiation levels across the USA, updated in real time every minute. This is the first web site where the average citizen (or anyone in the world) can see what radiation levels are anywhere in the USA at any time and other countries across the globe.

A growing number of Radiation Monitoring Stations across the country, using various models of GeigerCounters, upload their Radiation Count data in real time to their computer using a Data Cable, and then over the Internet to this web site, all of this accomplished through GeigerGraph for Networks software.

Update: 3/29/11, 6:15 A.M. Radiation Monitoring by Government vs. Private Citizen

So what can we take away from yesterday's incident of the false alert? It seems to me that we must conclude that there are tradeoffs in the ways that we monitor radiation. Government operation of monitoring stations is under tight and direct control, but at the same time leaves open the question of transparency when it comes to the Government's understandable position of walking a fine line between keeping the public informed while averting panic.

Private citizen radiation monitoring networks like ours, on the other hand, are partly dependent on the integrity of its individual Monitoring Stations, but on the other hand, the reporting of radiation levels is quite transparent. So if we as citizens are to do our own monitoring of radiation, which is a very sensitive subject matter, and then report that data to the public over a network, there are certain guidelines that wisdom dictates we must follow:
bullet There still must be some degree of central control. That includes being discriminating in issuing licenses to Monitoring Stations in the first place, to minimize the chance of admission to the network of those bent on mischief.
bullet It then follows that the network must retain the ability to remove any Monitoring Stations that abuse their privilege.
bullet The network should provide for multiple means of communication between client Monitoring Stations and the Network Server, along with the ability for real time discourse among Monitoring Stations through Chat and the like.

    Update: 3/25/11, 5:15 A.M.

Until some Japanese Monitoring Stations come on line in the Radiation Network, I received a verbal report from a customer of ours from Japan, living in Kawasaki City, a southwest Tokyo suburb, which puts her about 150 miles from the ailing Fukushima nuclear power plants. She reported a radiation level of .16 uSv/hr, which equates to 16 uR/hr, and that levels have been rising a little bit. Since normal background is perhaps 12 to 15 uR/hr, depending on location and altitude, her levels are not too bad at that distance.

How to Participate in the Nationwide Radiation Network:

If you want to join this nationwide grass roots effort to monitor the radiation in our environment, then this is all you need (click on the Software link):

What They're Covering Up at Fukushima

    By HIROSE TAKASHI

    Introduced by Douglas Lummis

Hirose Takashi has written a whole shelf full of books, mostly on the nuclear power industry and the military-industrial complex. Probably his best known book is Nuclear Power Plants for Tokyo in which he took the logic of the nuke promoters to its logical conclusion: if you are so sure that they're safe, why not build them in the center of the city, instead of hundreds of miles away where you lose half the electricity in the wires?

He did the TV interview that is partly translated below somewhat against his present impulses. I talked to him on the telephone today (March 22 , 2011) and he told me that while it made sense to oppose nuclear power back then, now that the disaster has begun he would just as soon remain silent, but the lies they are telling on the radio and TV are so gross that he cannot remain silent.

I have translated only about the first third of the interview (you can see the whole thing in Japanese on you-tube), the part that pertains particularly to what is happening at the Fukushima plants. In the latter part he talked about how dangerous radiation is in general, and also about the continuing danger of earthquakes.

After reading his account, you will wonder, why do they keep on sprinkling water on the reactors, rather than accept the sarcophagus solution [ie., entombing the reactors in concrete. Editors.] I think there are a couple of answers. One, those reactors were expensive, and they just can't bear the idea of that huge a financial loss. But more importantly, accepting the sarcophagus solution means admitting that they were wrong, and that they couldn't fix the things. On the one hand that's too much guilt for a human being to bear. On the other, it means the defeat of the nuclear energy idea, an idea they hold to with almost religious devotion. And it means not just the loss of those six (or ten) reactors, it means shutting down all the others as well, a financial catastrophe. If they can only get them cooled down and running again they can say, See, nuclear power isn't so dangerous after all. Fukushima is a drama with the whole world watching, that can end in the defeat or (in their frail, I think groundless, hope) victory for the nuclear industry. Hirose's account can help us to understand what the drama is about. Douglas Lummis

Hirose Takashi: The Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant Accident and the State of the Media

Broadcast by Asahi NewStar, 17 March, 20:00

Interviewers: Yoh Sen'ei and Maeda Mari

Yoh: Today many people saw water being sprayed on the reactors from the air and from the ground, but is this effective?

Hirose: . . . If you want to cool a reactor down with water, you have to circulate the water inside and carry the heat away, otherwise it has no meaning. So the only solution is to reconnect the electricity. Otherwise it’s like pouring water on lava.

Yoh: Reconnect the electricity – that’s to restart the cooling system?

Hirose: Yes. The accident was caused by the fact that the tsunami flooded the emergency generators and carried away their fuel tanks. If that isn’t fixed, there’s no way to recover from this accident.

Yoh: Tepco [Tokyo Electric Power Company, owner/operator of the nuclear plants] says they expect to bring in a high voltage line this evening.

Hirose: Yes, there’s a little bit of hope there. But what’s worrisome is that a nuclear reactor is not like what the schematic pictures show (shows a graphic picture of a reactor, like those used on TV). This is just a cartoon. Here’s what it looks like underneath a reactor container (shows a photograph). This is the butt end of the reactor. Take a look. It’s a forest of switch levers and wires and pipes. On television these pseudo-scholars come on and give us simple explanations, but they know nothing, those college professors. Only the engineers know. This is where water has been poured in. This maze of pipes is enough to make you dizzy. Its structure is too wildly complex for us to understand. For a week now they have been pouring water through there. And it’s salt water, right? You pour salt water on a hot kiln and what do you think happens? You get salt. The salt will get into all these valves and cause them to freeze. They won’t move. This will be happening everywhere. So I can’t believe that it’s just a simple matter of you reconnecting the electricity and the water will begin to circulate. I think any engineer with a little imagination can understand this. You take a system as unbelievably complex as this and then actually dump water on it from a helicopter – maybe they have some idea of how this could work, but I can’t understand it.

Yoh: It will take 1300 tons of water to fill the pools that contain the spent fuel rods in reactors 3 and 4. This morning 30 tons. Then the Self Defense Forces are to hose in another 30 tons from five trucks. That’s nowhere near enough, they have to keep it up. Is this squirting of water from hoses going to change the situation?

Hirose: In principle, it can’t. Because even when a reactor is in good shape, it requires constant control to keep the temperature down to where it is barely safe. Now it’s a complete mess inside, and when I think of the 50 remaining operators, it brings tears to my eyes. I assume they have been exposed to very large amounts of radiation, and that they have accepted that they face death by staying there. And how long can they last? I mean, physically. That’s what the situation has come to now. When I see these accounts on television, I want to tell them, “If that’s what you say, then go there and do it yourself!” Really, they talk this nonsense, trying to reassure everyone, trying to avoid panic. What we need now is a proper panic. Because the situation has come to the point where the danger is real.

If I were Prime Minister Kan, I would order them to do what the Soviet Union did when the Chernobyl reactor blew up, the sarcophagus solution, bury the whole thing under cement, put every cement company in Japan to work, and dump cement over it from the sky. Because you have to assume the worst case. Why? Because in Fukushima there is the Daiichi Plant with six reactors and the Daini Plant with four for a total of ten reactors. If even one of them develops the worst case, then the workers there must either evacuate the site or stay on and collapse. So if, for example, one of the reactors at Daiichi goes down, the other five are only a matter of time. We can’t know in what order they will go, but certainly all of them will go. And if that happens, Daini isn’t so far away, so probably the reactors there will also go down. Because I assume that workers will not be able to stay there.

I’m speaking of the worst case, but the probability is not low. This is the danger that the world is watching. Only in Japan is it being hidden. As you know, of the six reactors at Daiichi, four are in a crisis state. So even if at one everything goes well and water circulation is restored, the other three could still go down. Four are in crisis, and for all four to be 100 per cent repaired, I hate to say it, but I am pessimistic. If so, then to save the people, we have to think about some way to reduce the radiation leakage to the lowest level possible. Not by spraying water from hoses, like sprinkling water on a desert. We have to think of all six going down, and the possibility of that happening is not low. Everyone knows how long it takes a typhoon to pass over Japan; it generally takes about a week. That is, with a wind speed of two meters per second, it could take about five days for all of Japan to be covered with radiation. We’re not talking about distances of 20 kilometers or 30 kilometers or 100 kilometers. It means of course Tokyo, Osaka. That’s how fast a radioactive cloud could spread. Of course it would depend on the weather; we can’t know in advance how the radiation would be distributed. It would be nice if the wind would blow toward the sea, but it doesn’t always do that. Two days ago, on the 15th, it was blowing toward Tokyo. That’s how it is. . . .

Yoh: Every day the local government is measuring the radioactivity. All the television stations are saying that while radiation is rising, it is still not high enough to be a danger to health. They compare it to a stomach x-ray, or if it goes up, to a CT scan. What is the truth of the matter?

Hirose: For example, yesterday. Around Fukushima Daiichi Station they measured 400 millisieverts – that’s per hour. With this measurement (Chief Cabinet Secretary) Edano admitted for the first time that there was a danger to health, but he didn’t explain what this means. All of the information media are at fault here I think. They are saying stupid things like, why, we are exposed to radiation all the time in our daily life, we get radiation from outer space. But that’s one millisievert per year. A year has 365 days, a day has 24 hours; multiply 365 by 24, you get 8760. Multiply the 400 millisieverts by that, you get 3,500,000 the normal dose. You call that safe? And what media have reported this? None. They compare it to a CT scan, which is over in an instant; that has nothing to do with it. The reason radioactivity can be measured is that radioactive material is escaping. What is dangerous is when that material enters your body and irradiates it from inside. These industry-mouthpiece scholars come on TV and what to they say? They say as you move away the radiation is reduced in inverse ratio to the square of the distance. I want to say the reverse. Internal irradiation happens when radioactive material is ingested into the body. What happens? Say there is a nuclear particle one meter away from you. You breathe it in, it sticks inside your body; the distance between you and it is now at the micron level. One meter is 1000 millimeters, one micron is one thousandth of a millimeter. That’s a thousand times a thousand: a thousand squared. That’s the real meaning of “inverse ratio of the square of the distance.” Radiation exposure is increased by a factor of a trillion. Inhaling even the tiniest particle, that’s the danger.

Yoh: So making comparisons with X-rays and CT scans has no meaning. Because you can breathe in radioactive material.

Hirose: That’s right. When it enters your body, there’s no telling where it will go. The biggest danger is women, especially pregnant women, and little children. Now they’re talking about iodine and cesium, but that’s only part of it, they’re not using the proper detection instruments. What they call monitoring means only measuring the amount of radiation in the air. Their instruments don’t eat. What they measure has no connection with the amount of radioactive material. . . .

Yoh: So damage from radioactive rays and damage from radioactive material are not the same.

Hirose: If you ask, are any radioactive rays from the Fukushima Nuclear Station here in this studio, the answer will be no. But radioactive particles are carried here by the air. When the core begins to melt down, elements inside like iodine turn to gas. It rises to the top, so if there is any crevice it escapes outside.

Yoh: Is there any way to detect this?

Hirose: I was told by a newspaper reporter that now Tepco is not in shape even to do regular monitoring. They just take an occasional measurement, and that becomes the basis of Edano’s statements. You have to take constant measurements, but they are not able to do that. And you need to investigate just what is escaping, and how much. That requires very sophisticated measuring instruments. You can’t do it just by keeping a monitoring post. It’s no good just to measure the level of radiation in the air. Whiz in by car, take a measurement, it’s high, it’s low – that’s not the point. We need to know what kind of radioactive materials are escaping, and where they are going – they don’t have a system in place for doing that now."
