Deirdre Kelleghan, an educator from Ireland, held a workshop for Sun-Earth Day with kids at the St. Cronans Boys National School in Bray Co Wicklow, Ireland. During the two days she educated the kids about the Sun and had the kids view the Sun in a h-alpha telescope. For most kids this was the first time they looked live (AND SAFELY) at the Sun.
The 2nd day she ran her solar drawing workshop "The Sun Massive" drawing competition for forty nine of the boys. They took a close look at some of the magical images taken by SDO and learned about solar flares, prominences, and CMEs. They also got look at the Sun in different wavelengths of light. Inspired by that view, they then started to get creative and put their work to "paper".
And the winners of the drawing competition are:
1st Place Ryan Jeffares, Age 12 Taking his inspiration from the SDO 1st Light Composite Image
2nd Place David Vickers, Age 11 With the X-class flare of 14 Feb 2011 inspired image
3rd Place Lochlann Megannety Age 10 with 171 image of some lovely loops
Congratulations to the winners and Thank you Deirdre and all teachers and educators for keeping our youth active, inspired and educated!
