Default Understanding the timescale of Kali Yuga.

It is apparent that many people do not understand the Vedic timescale.

Many new agers believe that the age of Kali will end in 2012. I do not know where they got the idea.

From the vedic scriptures regarding the timescale of Yugas....

    • 1 year of humans = 1 day of the devā-s.
    • 1 year = 365 days ( some use 360 to match a perfect circle in degrees º ) = 1 day of the devā-s.
    • Hence 4,800 devā years X 365 days in a human year = 1,752,000 human years.
    • Now if we multiply by 360 we get the classical 1,728,000 human years typically associated with kṛta or satya yuga.
    • kṛta or satya yuga = 4/4ths = 1,728,000 human years
    • tretā = 3/4ths or .75 x 1 ,728 ,000 years = 1 ,296 ,000 years
    • dvāpara is 2/4th or .5 x 1 ,728 ,000 years =864 ,000 years
    • kali or 1/4th or .25 x 1 ,728 ,000 years = 432 ,000 years

The origins of the numbers ( from the mahābhārata, śrīmad bhāgavatam, etc.) and the mathematics to the classical 1,728,000 human years that is then decreased for each yuga by 1/4th ( and is considered 1/4th of dharma that erodes down to kali yuga).

    Descriptions of Kali Yuga (wikipaedia)

Kali Yuga : (Devanāgarī: कलियुग [kəli juɡə], lit. "age of (the female demon) Kali", or "age of vice") is the last of the four stages that the world goes through as part of the cycle of yugas described in the Indian scriptures. The other ages are Satya Yuga, Treta Yuga and Dvapara Yuga. According to the Surya Siddhanta, an astronomical treatise that forms the basis of all Hindu and Buddhist calendars, Kali Yuga began at midnight (00:00) on 18 February 3102 BCE [1] in the proleptic Julian calendar, or 23 January 3102 BC in the proleptic Gregorian calendar. This date is also considered by many Hindus to be the day that Krishna left earth to return to his abode. Most interpreters of Hindu scriptures believe that earth is currently in Kali Yuga. Some, such as Swami Sri Yukteswar,[2] and Paramhansa Yogananda[3] believe that it is now near the beginning of Dvapara Yuga. The Kali Yuga is traditionally thought to last 432,000 years.

So Kali Yuga began in 3102 BCE.

    It lasts for 432,000 years.

This is why Kali Yuga will not end in 2012.

    Attributes of Kali Yuga

    In relation to rulers
    • Rulers will become unreasonable: they will levy taxes unfairly.
    • Rulers will no longer see it as their duty to promote spirituality, or to protect their subjects: they will become a danger to the world.
    • People will start migrating, seeking countries where wheat and barley form the staple food source.

    In human relationships
    • Avarice and wrath will be common. Humans will openly display animosity towards each other.
    • Ignorance of dharma will occur.
    • People will have thoughts of murder with no justification and will see nothing wrong in that.
    • Lust will be viewed as socially acceptable and sexual intercourse will be seen as the central requirement of life.
    • Sin will increase exponentially, whilst virtue will fade and cease to flourish.
    • People will take vows and break them soon after.
    • People will become addicted to intoxicating drinks and drugs.
    • Men will find their jobs stressful and will go to retreats to escape their work.
    • Gurus will no longer be respected and their students will attempt to injure them. Their teachings will be insulted, and followers of Kama will wrest control of the mind from all human beings. Brahmins will not be learned or honoured, Kshatriyas will not be brave, Vaishyas will not be just in their dealings and Shudras will not be honest and humble in their duties and to the other castes.

    Hello Ice
I know nothing about Vedic scriptures but the description of human relationships given seems very appropriate to current and past times.

    Quote In human relationships

    * Avarice and wrath will be common. Humans will openly display animosity towards each other.
    * Ignorance of dharma will occur.
    * People will have thoughts of murder with no justification and will see nothing wrong in that.
    * Lust will be viewed as socially acceptable and sexual intercourse will be seen as the central requirement of life.
    * Sin will increase exponentially, whilst virtue will fade and cease to flourish.
    * People will take vows and break them soon after.
    * People will become addicted to intoxicating drinks and drugs.
    * Men will find their jobs stressful and will go to retreats to escape their work.
So from what you say we have another 426 887 years to go before this changes?!!!

How does this tie in with the idea that mankind is on the verge of evolving and awakening spiritually, of the predicted earth change to fourth and fifth dimension energy?

I am struggling to pin down exactly where these predictions come from, a combination of the Hopi predictions, the Mayan calendar, the age of Aquarius and the channeled ET information (my favorite is BASHAR).

At the moment we seem to be talking more about the predicted physical earth changes, pole shifts, comets, massive earth quakes, than the changes in human consciousness .

    Sorry man,
that's a bit too long for my taste.
[Let's have a yuga cigar then...]
& TL, don't worry - there's no reason to adhere to prescriptions (+ there are also other views on how long the yugas are).

    Thanks for Kali, Ice!

An very interesting "small" book called ....the holy science... written by, swami shri Yukteswar Giri, explanes it too!

Swami Shri Yukteswar was the guru of paramahamsa yoganadaji Giri.

The book was written by the swami when he was asked to do so by knowone less than the mistical mahavatar Babaji maharaj.

The book is a bridge of explanation between the east and the west and written already a time ago. I couldn't find one word to much so its a very direct and gives a lott of explanation about many things . The book includes his explanation of the Yuga Cycle

    truthseekerdan,

the two videos you posted are new age distortions. I quoted the original ancient texts, these are the source of the information regarding timescales and yugas.
Posting new age (anything goes) videos in no way challenges the source information, but it does highlight the gross distortions present in new age material, which are an 'anything goes' corruption and tend to reinforce the notion that we are in the age of Kali, where truth is distorted. Both videos have absolutely no credibility and are produced with no source evidence whatsoever.

    Again, from source material......

THE "FOUR AGES" – VEDIC SCRIPTURAL CALCULATION

The duration of the material universe is limited. It is manifested in cycles of kalpas. A kalpa is a day of Brahma, and one day of Brahma consists of a thousand cycles of four yugas or ages: Satya, Treta, Dvapara, and Kali yuga.

The cycle of Satya is characterized by virtue, wisdom and religion, there being practically no ignorance and vice, and the yuga lasts 1,728,000 years. Satya yuga is the golden age.

For self-realization, the people in Satya-yuga, living a lifetime of a hundred thousand years, were able to perform prolonged meditation, this is the process of self-realization to attain the Absolute Truth at this time. The means to attain the goal in life is hard and takes an awful time to attain liberation, but this is in accordance to such state of condition and surroundings. The environment in the golden age is almost perfect, the air is clean, there are abundance of food, vegetation and fruits and nuts all over, and people do not work for food. They just simply meditate in any forest they desire without disturbances from any kind, wild animals, and humans and even natural phenomena.

In the Treta-yuga vice is introduced, and this yuga lasts 1,296,000 years. Treta yuga is the silver age. And in Treta-yuga, when the duration of life was ten thousand years, self-realization was attained by performance of great sacrifice. This is the process of self-realization in the silver age, performing yajnas, sacrifices. This means is still considered to be hard and easy because all the materials used for the sacrifice were available, but the performance of the yajnas was very strict and rigid, according to the religious principles.

In the Dvapara-yuga there is an even greater decline in virtue and religion, vice increasing, and this yuga lasts 864,000 years. Dvapara yuga is the copper age. In the Dvapara-yuga, when the duration of life was one thousand years, self-realization was attained by worship of the Lord. Temple worship is rampant; deity worship is an obligation for every household. As the decline of religious principles was fast degrading, the means of realization becomes comfortable and do not takes sometime. But the hard-and-fast rule was to constantly performing worship regularly.

And finally in Kali-yuga (the yuga we have now been experiencing over the past 5,000 years) there is an abundance of strife, ignorance, irreligion and vice, true virtue being practically nonexistent, and this yuga lasts 432,000 years.

But in the Kali-yuga, the maximum duration of life being one hundred years only and that combined with various difficulties, the recommended process of self-realization is that of hearing and chanting of the holy name, fame, and pastimes of the Lord. In Kali-yuga, there is NO hard-and-fast rule in doing the means of self-realization. One cannot meditate in Kali yuga simply because of the turbulent and uncontrollable mind cause by the corrupted environment, chaos, and confusion.

At this time, when a person reaches the age of over a hundred year old, he or she becomes celebrated and famous, but more of the times people dies at a young age. Why?

Many issues can be attributed to this shortage of lifespan,

Food; processed refined foods invaded the market and junk foods are substantially available for children,

Environment; polluted air, water, and natural calamities caused by climate change,

Lifestyles; high technology affects everyone to adjust to unorthodox lifestyles that is damaging to the health,

Stress, anxiety, and depression; these are the subtle killers.

KALKI the avatar will appear at the end of the age of KALI.....

The cycle of the four yugas, namely Satya, Treta, Dvapara and Kali, rotates like the calendar months. The present Kali-yuga lasts 432,000 years, out of which we have passed only 5,000 years after the Battle of Kurukṣetra and the end of the regime of King Parikṣit. So there are 427,000 years balances yet to be finished.

Sri Yukteswar(1855-1936) Swami Paramahansa Yogananda's teacher, had a slightly different take on the time-frames of the ages. He claimed that there had been a mistranslation at some point that created confusion on this important subject. For details, refer to The Holy Science by Swami Sri Yukteswar, published by the Self-Realization Fellowship in Los Angeles, California.

    Dear Icecold,

I'm just a truth seeker that just presented an alternative point of view. Calling it "new age" is partially true, because it's actually going to be a "golden age".

I do have quite a few indian friends, and they believe that the Vedic prophecies match very well the Mayan ones. Here is a link someone sent me a while ago: http://hinduism.about.com/od/basics/a/goldenage.htm

I was also told that the 432000 years may be more of a metaphor. The base number 432 is part of a very ancient system of sacred numbers found around the world. (http://www.greatdreams.com/432.htm)

BTW, you don't have to believe anything that I presented here, it's just for the ones that want to know and search more... "The truth is not for all men, but only for those who seek it."

Yes I was aware of this but dismissed it for the following reason....Again, its a claim without any reference to original texts which may support the claim. It is an assumption (revelation) on his part which would be challenged by a thousand other experts of the Vedic scriptures...which are quite clear on the matter.

Its not a metaphor. Who was it that told you that? Where did you get that information? As I have said the scriptures are clear. These are attempts at distortion.

Quote Calling it "new age" is partially true, because it's actually going to be a "golden age".
    LOL

Again, where is the evidence for this?????

You seem to confuse original source material which is evidence, with modern prophecy which is largely bunk. These two things do not equate. Because someone is an Indian, does not make them an expert in Vedic texts. Your source above is focused on the Mayan calendar more than the Vedic scriptures.

Hi there, so is it correct that this Kali Yuga started at the same time as this period of the Mayan long count? Is the reason that they both started at the same time an astrological alignment? Therefore two races seperated by oceans and continents agree on the significance of certainly the astrological situation 5,113 years ago?

    Thx T

Taliesin I think it is pretty much a hopeless task to try to intercalcate the cycles of the ages expressed in the various traditions. First there is the formidable problem of translations.......even though scholars have come a long way over the past 100 years translating Mayan hieroglyphs, ancient Vedic Texts, etc. there still is little understanding of the actual cultures of those times, and that provides the missing context for actually understanding the languages. Second there is the issue of "time" and astronomical cycles....the whole problem is where you "set the clock" for example, although the Mayan calendar was thought to have been created relatively recently, it was BACKDATED to an earlier time. Then there is the issue of which metric, or spiral of time astronomically speaking, that you will calibrate your cycle with. The heavenly bodies are all inscribing endless cycles or spirals of time which interrelate energetically. You see the problem here? This problem is compounded by the possibility that we humans may have come from somewhere else and so the earlier legacy cultures may have set their clocks and cycles against other heavenly scenes, "as above, so below." It is virtually impossible at this point to intercalcate the cycles of time. Which brings us back to the beginning. It is probably better to firmly sit oneself down in some discipline or other, to at least begin the personal exploration of reality in earnest somewhere, to at least orient oneself from one perspective and grow from one's center within a tradition that has been tested and is known to be true under the tutelage of a Master if possible. We do not live long enough to actually weigh and compare let alone cross-check the various disciplines and traditions for validity and accuracy.

The purpose of this thread is to discuss vedic scriptures and timescale.

"It is apparent that many people do not understand the Vedic timescale.
Many new agers believe that the age of Kali will end in 2012. I do not know where they got the idea."

Personally I would love to think that we are entering a golden age, but I do see that at the moment it is very fashionable to tie everything into 2012!

There's a book from Satyananda Maharaj called The Lemurian prophecies. The pdf link for download is available somewhere within this forum ..

It broadly explains how these epochs evolved in the time of human civilisation , the co-emergence of human race .

Intrinsically, he also sees the first beings coming from the Stars and the way we were adapted to here ..

So the 'indefinite time' as a matter of fact has a starting point here ..

What was before most people know only as a 'dream time' ,

the time before the beginning ...

    another time ...

The time of this civilisation has a starting point and ending point, both are far way from each other at the moment ..

during the whole epoch time also appears to be a loop , a matrix, circles of consciousness, energy and matter .
When the civilisation evolves beyond the loop and can create its own artificial environment and ascend to the next evolution pattern ..

It will be the old time again.

    ...

So Kali yuga ends in 426 887 years, which time of the year? Just kidding.

They say that the fuel in the Sun will end in 4,5 milliard years.

    For me everything ends here.

But I find the discussion very interesting in the same way that its

fascinating watching people who watch TV.

I am convinced that its important too for some. So I will follow the dis-

cussion to eventually find out where the importance is situated.

Agape it seems that the visual of a spiral instead of a circle is very helpful in visualizing the concepts...........but even that barely scratches the surface of the interlocking patterns. Although I certainly am no adept - it seems that the eternal now is the place and the time.

What happens to the people who live in the dream time and don't care about human evolution ..

That is actually very funny! There sure is lots of melodrama at this level.....but maybe dreamtime has dramas of its own, i.e. the onion effect - an enigma wrapped inside a mystery etc.
