Mutant Fukushima Butterflies Reveal Effects of Radiation

    [B]SARAH VRBA - Care2

A team of researchers have revealed that a specific species of local butterfly in Japan have mutated since the Fukushima disaster back in March 2011. The species and the massive changes in physical and genetic development suggest that radiation levels continue to be a threat in the region, and may also serve as indicator of how slowly the breakdown of radioactive materials might be.

After over a year of research, the group published their findings in the scientific journal, Nature, and roundly concluded that, 'radionuclides from the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant caused physiological and genetic damage to this species.” Researchers had already been studying the delicate butterfly species for 10 years prior to the Fukushima incident, because the group of animals is extremely senstive to environmental changes, which could offer a way for scientists to measure environmental changes.

As Prof Otaki, one of the researchers, told the BBC:

We had reported the real-time field evolution of colour patterns of this butterfly in response to global warming before, and [because] this butterfly is found in artificial environments – such as gardens and public parks – this butterfly can monitor human environments.

The BBC notes that scientists collected 144 adult pale grass blue butterflies two months after the disaster from 10 different locations, including Fukushima. Researchers quickly discovered that the butterflies from areas with radiation developed startingly smaller wings and abnormal eye development. The study became even more surprising when scientists bred the butterflies. It was then that they discovered the genetic mutations that had occurred from exposure to radiation.

Researchers noticed that the second generation, bred away from any radioactive exposure, developed strange antannae. Those butterflies bred from the Fukushima area showed a rate of mutation double that of butterflies that were taken from areas without radiation.

The research is coupled with reports that bad practices and radiation cover-ups were central parts of the Fukushima plant operations. Workers were not told of the dangers of radiation and encouraged to work in unsafe conditions. After the plant had a meltdown in March 2011, the government failed to tell people quickly about radiation, safety and resources for the disaster. People have been concerned about the return of nuclear power to the island, after president Yoshihiko Noda decided to restart some plants during the summer months.

The study on butterflies proves that while immediate fears of powerful radiation sickness on humans and animals may not be imminent, the longer effects of nuclear power and meltdown will be felt for generations to come.

so, butterflys are mutating at radioactive levels that are LOWER than those I experience when I hike (on certain trails)... I better start counting my toes and fingers eh? I spent 4 hours at a site that had "back ground" levels around 2x those of the ***. facility grounds are now ( around 18 microSv's I think this is actually 9 times current readings?)

Quote 150 larvae out of 200 were placed in a plastic container and irradiated for 180–280 hours or for 177–387 hours, resulting in a cumulative radiation exposure of 3–55 mSv or 57–125 mSv
125 micro sievert Exposure,,For comparison, a human receives 2,400 micro sievert per year from natural radiation in the form of sunlight, radon, and other sources. One chest CT scan generates 6,900 micro sievert per scan.

    It Could Have Been Worse
    by Fairewinds Energy Education

    Descriptive:
    Quote About this video

Fairewinds analysis of the triple meltdowns at Fukushima Daiichi determined that other Japanese reactor sites were also in jeopardy because their cooling water systems were destroyed by the same tsunami. In this film, Fairewinds provides evidence that cooling systems for 24 out of 37 diesel generators were shut down by the tsunami and that 14 additional nuclear reactors were impacted. Finally, Fairewinds also recommends that the criteria of the international nuclear accident scale have a Level 8 added. The addition of a Level 8 would reflect the nuclear accident scenario at a multi-reactor site that significantly changes the risk factors to the general public and emergency evacuation procedures.

Chernobyl happened in what,, 1986 and its perfectly safe now, there are catfish that are around 4 feet long living in the "cooling pools" where the "spent nuclear rods" are... (and they've been there a while) I'm not too good at math, but that's a little over 20 years ago right?

so what's the worry about hundreds of THOUSANDS of years again? STOP trusting the media, STOP listening to what you are "told" and start looking at the facts & reality of what is going on...

I wonder if those fish are HEALTHIER than regular ones.. like humans are when they are exposed to radiation...

Quote I have always encouraged my kids to play in the dirt to build up their immune systems (all four have had remarkably few health problems in 13-24 years). But I never really thought it would be a good idea for them to play around in a nuclear waste dump. Apparently, there may be a health benefit of exposure to some radiation. This phenomenon is recognized scientifically, apparently, and has a name: "hormesis", which is latin for "that which does not kill you makes you stronger".

Quote Afraid of Radiation? Low Doses are Good for You

by Donald W. Miller, Jr., MD
Fearful of the harm that radiation can do, the citizens of Sacramento, in a public referendum, had the city shut down its Rando Seco nuclear power plant. The Sacramento Municipal Utility District put up windmills instead, which on a windy day produces 1 percent of the power the nuclear plant did, and built a photovoltaic solar plant that generates one-third of one percent of that power. Eight nuclear power plants have been decommissioned in the U.S. since 1990. None ordered after 1974 were completed, and no orders have been placed for any since 1978. The 103 nuclear reactors in the U.S. that remain operational produce 7.6 percent of the nation's energy, as electricity. There are 442 nuclear power plants worldwide, with 35 under construction — 24 of them in Asia.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NCR), two federal entities charged with addressing radiation safety, hold the view that exposure to any amount of ionizing radiation, no matter how small, is harmful. No amount of radioactivity can be proclaimed safe. Accordingly, the EPA and the NCR have set extremely stringent regulatory limits for public exposure to radiation — 15 and 100 mrem (millirem)/year respectively. This is the level of cleanup radioactive sites have to achieve, for example, before they can be released for public use. The initial limit for radiation exposure was 36 rem (36,000 mrem). With the advent of nuclear-powered ships, where sailors would be in close proximity to nuclear reactors for extended periods of time, it was though prudent to reduce it to15 rem, even though no deaths or injuries were documented under the 36-rem protection limit. (For practical purposes, rad, rem, Sievert, and Grey are interchangeable measures of radiation, where 1 rad = 1 rem, 1 Sievert = 1 Grey, and 100 rad or rem = 1 Sievert or Grey. A millirem — mrem — is 1/1000th of a rem.)

Along with the EPA and NRC, elected government officials, newspaper science writers, TV reporters and journalists, and, consequently, most Americans believe that low doses of radiation are harmful. People have "radiophobia" — the fear that any level of ionizing radiation, no matter how small, is dangerous. Why? For one thing, the news media fosters it because fear sells. Scary stories about the dangers of radiation keep people tuned in. Another reason, which lies deeper in the collective psyche, is that this phobia expresses the deep-seated sense of revulsion that Americans feel over the devastation and loss of life caused by the atomic bombs that its country dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki at the end of World War II. A third, more correctable reason is that the relationship between radiation dose and its biological effects is believed to conform to the "Linear (No-Threshold) Hypothesis," or "model." Regulators use this model to predict the number of cancer deaths that low doses of radiation are assumed to cause and then cite these predictions to justify their draconian radiation safety standards

    Greetings again TargeT ...

Please note ~ this thread was made into a sticky by the suggestion and consensus of other forum members other than myself. If in some way it distracts or troubles you in reading my posted updates here ~ then my i suggest you ignore the thread ~ Because your post and comments will neither dissuade or prevent me from posting updates here. Also note ~ i do not take any comfort in your premise that all is hunky dory (in regards to these nuclear disasters) and my post here is just fear mongering.

I do not want you to stop updating, both sides of an issue should be represented and since no one is representing the view point I (and many others) hold, I'll offer the counter point to your posts.

"consensus" is a moving target and I feel that I am representing the other side of your coin (which I also feel is a consensus); I do not mean to be disrespectful, I just happen to disagree & have something to offer to the counter point.

presenting only one side of an issue is a basic tenant of propiganda; I hope you don't mind me offering the other point of view; I was interested to read the report on insects you brought up a few posts back & have read most of your other posts in this thread and apreciate them. I did use the word "stop" but not directed at your posting habits.

no animosity here, I just think that those with knowledge have a responsability to do something about it; my contributions here are one of the many steps I am taking ( just wait till I build a LFTR reactor in my back yard... hahaha, just need a better source of thorium than smoke detectors...)

Radiation Still Leaking Into Nearby Japanese Waters 18 Months After Quake, Tsunami

Eryn Brown | Los Angeles Times

LOS ANGELES — More than 18 months after a magnitude 9.0 earthquake, 40-foot tsunami and nuclear power plant woes that struck Japan starting March 11, 2011, levels of radioactive cesium 134 and cesium 137 originating from the crippled Fukushima-Daiichi plant remain elevated in some fish and seafood in nearby waters.

That suggests that radiation from the plant is still being released into the ocean, wrote Ken Buesseler, a marine of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Woods Hole, Mass., in a perspective article in Friday's edition of the journal Nature.

Buesseler reviewed data on radionuclides in fish and other seafood that have been compiled by the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries since March 23, 2011. Cesium levels were highest in bottom-dwelling fish caught near Fukushima prefecture, and lower in fish who live in the open ocean or closer to the surface, Buesseler reported.

He also noted that cesium levels had not declined, except "perhaps" in surface-dwelling fish. Over time, cesium that accumulates in the muscle tissue of fish should decline at a loss rate of a few percent per day. From this Buesseler reasoned that "there must be a continued source of cesium contamination associated with the seafloor." One possibility could be radionuclides from Fukushima lurking in ocean bottom sediments.

The news was not all dire. The "vast majority" of fish near Fukushima, Buesseler wrote, have radioactive cesium levels below the strict limits for seafood consumption adopted by the Japanese government in April 2012 to assuage consumer fears. And fish that migrate out of the area lose their cesium rapidly. As an example, Buesseler cited the example of bluefin tuna caught off the California coast, which carried minuscule-but-detectable amounts of radioactive cesium all the way across the Pacific.

But to fully understand how much radiation is in fish and seafood near the Fukushima Daiichiplant now and in the future, Buesseler added, studying the marine life caught in the area won't be enough: Scientists will also need to learn more about where the cesium near the ocean floor is coming from and how it collects and accumulates.

What is even more saddening (or maddening), is that it appears very little has been done to help the affected Japanese either... so far, one quarter of the money for the relief & rebuilding ($148 billion ) has been siphoned off into "other projects" unrelated to the reconstruction. (Separate thread here... (sorry for self-promotion, but it clearly paints a bigger picture,.. and is ahem,... not as "important" as the elections I guess )

If I'm not mistaken, this appears to be occurring at an increasingly global level. No sooner does the next big disaster happen somewhere, and the ones preceding it are virtually forgotten, MSM included:

    Patterns begin to emerge...
    * The government departments of each ALL incredibly slow to respond - if at all,
    * Almost blatantly hiding, denying &/or aggressively suppressing ANY negative reporting (I believe that's called "lying" )
    * Scammers (always the scammers - that's a given) including some elected "leaders"
    * Clear evidence of offered help and possible solutions - including Fukishima - being turned away!
    * Disaster relief funds in various countries then shortly get caught out: funds "going missing" or being "mis-spent": New Orleans, Chile, Haiti, Pacific Islands, Christchurch, Philipines, etc - the list is rapidly growing (...and now possibly New York/Hurricane Sandy and the possible outcome of the sinkhole growing in Louisiana at an alarming rate):

Where is this going? Am I missing something?

i would like to suggest that Target starts his own thread rather than continue in attempting to derail this one.
Offering a different point of view is not derailing. there is one person continually posting in this thread spreading what I have shown to be false fear.

there have been no deaths from radiation in Japan, why would there be any issues here in the US or Canada, I personally think this thread should be closed, but if it continues I will continue to offer a counter point.
