That video made me teary eyed! It looks so exciting that I'm going to have to pre-order some.
    Thanks for posting the info!
    Nancy

Note: I just read that it won't be available for ordering outside Australia for a while, so US citizens will have to wait a bit longer and cannot pre-order.

    I love Tom McArthur.

This world needs exactly what is behind Tom's not accepting the industry's [completely worthless] "millions"; there's way too many 'shelved' things on the planet that could turn this place into 'paradise'...

    - yes, same impact here.

Everyone should at least watch the little vid in BMJs post above - see what that stirs up in you.

Thank you for that - so needed to watch something uplifting! What a brilliant story - I had heard of the benefits of this fruit before - particularly for circulation - but never to this extent. Above all the kindness and integrity of the man really shines out. A huge 'well done' for not selling out. So many of the smaller companies sell out to the corporate giants such as Innocent Smoothies to Coca Cola last year.

This is so brilliant!! Thank you! We know this humble fruit known as papaya has a lot of medicinal uses. But nobody has ever put the effort to do something with it. we use it for a lot of things from tenderizing meat (it has papaina) to weight loss aid.
This guy is a God send. We need more people like him.

Well, I'd still be a little cautious (you know me, the greatest wetblanket ever) but it's encouraging news.

Remember, papain, up to now the most commonly used ingredient in pawpaw, has been used in many medical products before. In fact, if you read the Wikipedia article, you will see that

Quote On September 23, 2008, the FDA warned companies to stop marketing topical drug products containing papain by November 4, 2008. The FDA said, "Papain-containing drug products in topical form historically have been marketed without approval...".[11] According to the FDA's statement on the subject, "These unapproved products have put consumers' health in jeopardy, from reports of permanent vision loss with unapproved balanced salt solutions to a serious drop in blood pressure and increased heart rate from the topical papain products," said Janet Woodcock, M.D., director for the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.
The FDA is taking action today against these products because it has received reports of serious adverse events in patients using products containing papain. Reports include hypersensitivity (allergic) reactions that lead to hypotension (low blood pressure) and tachycardia (rapid heart rate). In addition, patients who are allergic to latex can also be allergic to papaya, the source of papain. Therefore, patients with latex sensitivity may be at increased risk of suffering an adverse reaction to a topical papain drug product.
    ...

FDA urges consumers who are using topical drug products containing papain, and who have questions or concerns, to contact their health care provider about discontinuing treatment with these products. There are a number of FDA-approved topical products that have been found safe and effective as wound healing agents and that do not contain papain.
This makes good common sense to me. (Added) It may also mean those of you subject to the FDA may find difficulty in importing it (not sure about this).

Of course, that's not to say that the active ingredient in MacArthur's ointment isn't papain, but I would bet that it is related to one of several proteases found in pawpaws, of which papain is one.

The other thing to be aware of is that whenever a new pharmacologically active chemical hits the scene, it gets tried out on just about any conceivable ailment, with unwarranted beneficial effects in many simply because of the well-known placebo effect. It's only after some years that its true niche in the pharmacopoeia becomes apparent.

Hopefully it will prove useful in the treatment of arthritis, cleaning infected wounds and ulcers (though there are numerous other, safer products for this) and possibly in dissolving away superficial skin ailments, but I would be wary of relying on it to totally eradicate the more serious carcinomas, when the user can be lulled into a false sense of security that the condition has finally gone. Only the attentions of a trained specialist would ensure this.
