Default Please BOYCOTT - Herbal essences and all Proctor and Gamble products

    Animal cruelty for testing purposes

Procter & Gamble (P&G) are the world’s largest consumer products company, with an annual turnover of over $68 billion. Their international headquarters is in the US city of Cincinnati.

Traditionally known for their soaps and detergents, P&G now produce a massive range of products in hair care, cosmetics, perfumes, personal hygiene, laundry care, snack food, paper and feminine hygiene, and even pet food. P&G’s brands include Ariel, Daz, Fairy, Max Factor, Olay, Pantene Pro-V, Herbal Essences, and Head and Shoulders.

    Why Boycott P&G?
P&G admit that guinea pigs, rabbits, hamsters, ferrets, rats and mice are among the animals used in their ‘product safety research’, as well as cats and dogs in pet food experiments.

Procter & Gamble exist for one reason, and one reason only - to make as much money as possible. P&G test on animals because of their desire to get new chemical ingredients on to the market. This allows them to claim that their new hair dye, skin cream or washing powder etc. is ‘new, improved’, in the hope of increasing sales. But with many companies producing similar consumer products without carrying out animal tests, it shows that P&G’s cruelty is motivated by greed.

Obviously, P&G realise that their behaviour appals most people. Sadly, instead of reforming, P&G invest enormous amounts in PR and spin that aims to give a rosy impression of their testing practices. P&G have even been lobbying governments to try to block bans on animal testing for cosmetics that have public support.

Now, Uncaged’s investigations have uncovered P&G’s outrageous plans to carry out massive animal testing programmes for new cosmetics and household product ingredients.

Money is the only language P&G understand. Ultimately, by boycotting P&G, you hold the key to saving the many thousands of animals who suffer and die every year in cruel and unnecessary tests conducted by this company.

Please do not support these monsters. We have the power to stop this by NOT purchasing their products.

    news release

Herbal Essences caught deceiving public over cruelty to animals

P&G have been forced to withdraw an advert for their hair care range ‘Herbal Essences’ which falsely claimed ‘we don’t test on animals’, following a complaint submitted by Uncaged to the Advertising Standards Authority. When challenged, P&G admitted the statement contradicted thousands of chemical poisoning tests that they still carry out on animals for the sake of Herbal Essences, Pantene, Olay and other beauty brands.
Below: The banned Herbal Essences advert

Uncaged spearhead a global consumer boycott of Procter & Gamble to persuade the company to stop conducting poisoning tests on animals for the sake of cosmetics and toiletries. An international day of action is scheduled for Saturday 14th May 2011.
Although such tests have been banned in the UK and Europe due to public opposition to unnecessary animal cruelty, the practice still continues in countries with less-advanced animal welfare regulations such as the USA and China.
This decision will give consumers some clarity over the fact that P&G continue to subject animals to repeat-dose poisoning tests for the sake of trivial products such as Herbal Essences.
However, here at Uncaged we are concerned that hundreds of thousands of people will have read this lie and thus may be unwittingly funding cruelty to animals by purchasing Herbal Essences. P&G continue to issue misleading statements about their animal testing practices, and we are asking the ASA to widen their investigation into these fraudulent claims.

Here are some alternatives that help not only avoid corporations but also don't contribute to pollution:

Skin care: virgin coconut oil. It's light, is absorbed fast, and is packed with beneficial stuff for your skin and body. Try adding a drop of good quality essential oil of your choice, and you'll feel uplifted to boot.
Soap: get creative and start making your own. Or find a soapmaker who only uses good oils (olive, coconut, etc); they are not that rare to find in the age of the interwebs.
Feminine hygiene: Mooncup/The Keeper (google them). Not only are they environmentally friendly but work out one heck of a lot cheaper.
Laundry: Baking soda mixed with borax if needed. Soap nuts are cheap and available in most Indian shops.
Fabric softener: vinegar in the rinse cycle of your wash works wonders.
Fragrance: http://www.blackphoenixalchemylab.com/ Positively more ethical than any other fragrance manufacturer I've ever come across.

Hi all, a bit more information. I didnt really realise either how extensive this practise still is.

This is the link to the P&G products http://www.uncaged.co.uk/pgproducts.htm. I was surprised at these ones Duracell batteries, Gillette, Oral B and Mum anti-stink! I USED to use all those. These guys have signed up over 1/4 million people in the UK who pledge to boycott P&G products.

There are many more of these vile people. Many companies (including body shop now owned by L'Oreal / Nestle ) say they dont test THEIR products ..........on animals - but get this............ The Ingredients they use to make their product are tested on animals. So yes the final product is not tested on animals, but they purchase these ingredients knowing that they have been tested on these lovely creatures. Its the way to get around the law

To name and shame some cosmetic companies: Avon, Boots, Clarins, Revlon
To name and shame some chemical companies: Colgage, Unilever, Johnson and Johnson, Cuzzons,
See here on how to spot a company that uses animals for testing: http://www.uncaged.co.uk/animaltesting.htm

This site shows the horrific reality of vivisection. It WILL make you cry. These poor creatures are used for organ implants checking on immuno-suppresant drugs. They are then "sacrificed" according to the notes. http://www.xenodiaries.org/summary.htm, http://www.xenodiaries.org/ (video on this one) much information.

There is NO eveidence that animal research benefits humans

Yes, I'm interested as well. Love the idea of coconut oil for skin care. Im going to try that tonight. Does anyone have helpful links for alternative products. Looks like most of the big companies are so guilty.

Found this list: I can attest to the quality of Weleda brand. (for sydney people get from Newtons pharmacy - opp QVB) or on line. I dont know any of the others on the list tho.

These company’s products can most easily be found in whole-food and ‘alternative’ shops, but increasingly in some supermarkets:

    Non Animal Testing Companies
    Beauty Without Cruelty
    Kingfisher
    Bio - D
    Meadowsweet
    Daniel Field
    Neal's Yard Remedies
    Dr Hausheka
    Faith in Nature
    Urtekram
    Green People
    Weleda
    Honesty Cosmetics
    Yaoh

For alternative pet food companies please see this pet food information sheet.

Many of these products can be obtained on-line. Click here for links to on-line cruelty-free retailers.

    Pet Food brands to Boycott
The main culprits for cruel and unethical animal testing are the major international 'pet' food businesses.
IAMS / Eukanuba owned by Procter & Gamble
Hills Science Diet owned by Colgate Palmolive

The majority of pet food brands available in the UK are produced by two animal testing companies - "Nestlé Purina/Friskies" and "Pedigree, Masterfoods (Mars Inc)."
    • Nestlé Purina/Friskies:
Alpo, Bonio, Felix, Go Cat, Gourmet,
Omega Complete, Proplan, Spillers, Vital Balance, Winalot.
    • Pedigree, Masterfoods (Mars Inc):
Bounce, Cesar, Chappie, Frolic, James Wellbeloved, Katkins,
Kitekat, Pal, Pedigree Chum, Royal Canin, Sheba,
      Techni-cal (US & Canada), Whiskas.
Pedigree also manufacture Thomas rabbit food and Trill bird food.
    http://www.uncaged.co.uk/crueltyfree.htm

This is the page dedicated to iams owned by P&G. These guys are seriously cruel.

Thank you so much for posting this - i'm a fairly 'conciensious consumer' - very careful where i put my money and energy and still there were a few surprises on that list!! I will pass on to my friends. I try to make everything myself as far as hygeine products, skin lotions/care and cleaning stuff - soda bicarb, vinegar and lemon juice are like a mantra in my house lol!

As an aside and i hope nobody minds - here is my recipe for a homemade air freshener which i use, very effective (passed down through my family):

One pint (or so) boiled water - cooled.
One tablespoon white vinegar (i think any vinegar would do)
    One tablespoon soda bicarb
    One tablespoon lemon juice
Couple of drops of essential oil - whatever you like best.

Mix together in a hand spray type gizmo - be careful not to tighten the lid after mixing to allow the fizz to die down.

Hope this is useful - i have also used it as a fabric freshener spray whilst my laundry is drying...

    Blessings - Rain

Thanks PVM, you know I thought more people on Avalon would be sensitive to the inhumane treatment of our defensless animals. (perhaps they havent seen the thread - I'll choose to think that anway)

Even if we can wake up just one person to this disgusting practise, then it will be worth the effort eh. I notice that my fb page on this has been given a wide berth by my friends. I can only hope that they read the first line and that will stick in the subconsious enough to stop them supporting these vile corporations

    Wishful thinking perhaps *sigh*
