Interesting .. File sent. Did anyone else get a 1.7mb pdf file???

I got the 1.7 MB pdf from rmorgan's link http://www.secondattention.org/dl/poker_without_cards.pdf.

I only DLd the original link and the second one. Not the one you did.

Edit: and after being on this thread for a very long time ... rMorgans post with the PFD finally came though! wich means it must be less than 3 megs .. not the 5.5 I DLd .... will report back.

What's unclear then is where rmorgan found the older, smaller version of this document to post at his link.

And the reason it is smaller by the amount it is. If he resaved it as newer version(with better compression algo) b4 upload, perhaps that ??? RMorgan .. any input?

As you can see from the comments in my post a few back, where I display the properties of both versions, the smaller version was saved with an -older- Acrobat Distiller, and was saved -without- the back cover artwork.

I'd guess that it is the presence of the back cover artwork in the larger, newer, version that accounts for the main difference in the pdf file size.

Edit: I see that DeDukshyn is guessing the same as I am, by his latest edit .

For now I am going to do the following:

1. I will now remove the links above to 4shared. I don't want to have links that end up encouraging members to download the desktop application for 4shared.com.
2. Then I will edit jesterking's opening post to include the pdf as an attachment, with the first few pages visible so people can see what they're getting. I won't embed the entire pdf document in the on page pdf display, because that slows downloads and because the embedded forum pdf reader is too painful to use for large documents.
3. Then once that is working, I expect to delete a substantial number of the posts on this thread, complaining about this or that, or complaining about the complaints, or complaining that the complaints aren't complaints or ...

Plan change. The pdf file is flagged such that I can't extract individual pages (except as plain old ugly text.) So my plan to display "the first few pages" in the opening post of this thread is canceled. It's not worth the effort to reformat the first few pages in a pleasant format.

I have removed (deactivated, but still visible, for the curious) the 4shared links back on the first page or two of this thread.

I have edited the Opening Post to include the (smaller, no back cover) version of the pdf file as an attachment, which you can click on to view or download.

I am reconsidering whether to delete a substantial number of posts from this thread. If I can get the Opening Post useful enough, then only those with an insatiable curiosity need wade further into the thread, and what was disconcerting a few hours ago becomes quite ignorable now.

Thanks . Though I find that the posts of those who volunteer their posts for deletion are not usually the posts I am most eager to delete .

I have finished fancifying up the Original Post of this thread to provide more detail and the smaller version of the file as an attachment.

I'll figure out later whether I should delete some posts from this thread.

Paul, is file sharing something we can implement properly somehow on Avalon? This is a topic I have thought about a fair bit. I have many personal writings that are too long for posts but I'd still like to share, and if there are others I'd like to see what they got .... any way to expand vBulletin or set up some 3rd party app to help with this? I think it would be valuable to Avalon if it can be done properly ....

The odds of this happening are slim. If I could integrate vBulletin's attachment system with Amazon's S3 Simple Storage Service, that would be cool, and at a price (real cheap) we could afford. But I doubt such an integration is within our technical resources. I'll give it a quick look-see however.

My advice to others reading this far is DO NOT download from strange sites. It is a simple pdf file. How hard is it to upload from the computers where you claim to be reading it?

Considering the minute the copywrighted document is actualy hosted on the avalon server it puts Bill/Kerry up poop creek in the standings of a legal breach - where linking to it does not?

Also why go and re-upload something when there's a perfectly good copy / link appready provided? (yes i know his first attempts at posting it failed - but now that problems been sorted - imagine starting over with his 1st post being the very 1st and un-edited one - does it realy matter if its linked thru a site or uploaded straight to the board? It's the internet. Anyone, given the time and determination could (and have) constructed things that seem authentic as hell but tis realy just a producition of their boredom - it's up to you to look at the material provided and decide for yourself what to think about it - and for you - personaly - to go digging if you have questions of its authenticity)

Also, this is the internet. Every site youv'e visited - there's a record of. Just because you're downloading stuff from random hosting sites does not make you a bigger target. Downloading "known" no no's - like the Anarchists Cookbook - and downloading MP3's/Movies and all that other stuff will.

I guess my point is - Allmost every aspect of our lives, is being tracked, recorded in one way or another - it's something thats uncomfortable to know of and realy angry because there's not exactly much you can do about it currently..... But going hyperactive over where a file is hosted because they're "more watched" sites than the rest seems a bit of a lost cause.

Just be happy that you are able to put together the big picture piece by piece by yourself - and your'e no longer watching the world from behind a veil of Stockholm Syndrome. The chances of you getting carted away by the men in black for viewing this forum, and following the links on it is slim to none.

Don't worry -- I don't like the sounds of it either. Not going to happen.

This forum software restricts which types of files can be uploaded to the Project Avalon server for sharing with others to a very few types -- basically image files and pdf's. I'm not saying you can't get in trouble with even those, but they are safer than, say, Windows executables .

I think some good info came of it, don't be too heavy handed

I ended up deleting 15 posts, five by one member, and some of the focused responses by another seven members.

No one of us has a monopoly on correct insight, so we have to provide some respectful space to others with whom we disagree.
