Default In the interest of a wider perspective

This is for those of us who don't subscribe to the idea of "Ascension"...in case there is anyone out there who is feeling fearful and overwhelmed by the constant flow of material regarding the possibility of a Doomsday scenario - I just wanted to remind them to ensure that they read a wide range of websites dealing with this subject. For example www.bautforum.com, which offers the viewpoint of amateur and professional astronomers, astrophysicists etc. It makes interesting reading if you want a more balanced picture.
    This may be of benefit.

For all we know in the past those people that were swept away were said to have become gods or ascended into heaven etc.... After all we have only the words of those that survived to base our predictions on....

And when you think about the past major shifting events for the living it would be a nice way of portraying the passing of those loved ones that believed they were going to a better reality.... It comforts us when we fear our own future.

My greatest fear is when I reach the Pearly gates the guys say to me "So how was the holiday mate? Hope it was good, now get back to work on the assembly line!!! "

Just the way my grey matter works out things.... sorry.

Seth Godin says that some people not liking your ideas is a great thing because it means you're doing something new and different instead of the same old.

I don't buy in to this whole ascensionist way of thinking. Ascensionist is just another word for Armagedonist. I mentioned on another thread that I recently read Colin Wilson's Devil's Party. It's a study of various such cults and their gurus/messiahs going back over the years.
For aslong as there have been humans there have been people who've said the end is nigh and you should follow them, give them your money and energy and awe. And yet, we're all still here. Funny that. Nothing happens, the dates move, new gurus arise with new stories and new dates. Nothing happens, the dates move, new gurus arise with new stories and new dates. Etc.

Anthropologists have discovered that 5% of all populations (of all species) have 'leadership qualities' and the other 95% follow them. Within that 5% are people with their own issues who use fear to control and gain the energy/respect their egos crave. We don't have to listen to them.

This is just another branch of the fear porn that invades our community and distracts us from the important things. Their mainstream brainwashing doesn't work on us so they come here with different faces and different words. Fema camps, aliens, demons and comets. The sooner we stop listening to them, the sooner they'll go elsewhere.

Hello Phillipbbg - I didn't actually intend for this thread to embark on a discussion about Ascension. I understand your thoughts, but there are lots of other threads about Ascension on this forum.
I just wanted to remind anyone who may be concerned about things they are reading on PA that there are many different sources of information out there. That's all!

Tarka,,, forgive me,,, I am confused. Didn't you start this thread by saying,, "This is for those of us who don't subscribe to the idea of "Ascension"??

How then do you say that you didn't want to start a discussion on Ascension?? You brought it up! I do not feel a 'wider perspective' here.

Please do not get me wrong, I am not trying to be a 'thread stopper'. I love reading your posts. But I can't see the logic here... Maybe I need my morning coffee.

Thanks Jake, that was my take on the thread as well....

but we are all reacting strangely within this emotional swamp of a forum these days.

If one looks at my words, they actually are making a statement against the ascension theory as a sobering angle... but maybe my words were to oblique for most...

Sorry...I am not being very articulate today! Maybe I need my afternoon coffee...!

I seem to have read lots of postings by people who are really quite concerned about the future, and the best way to deal with the many theories they have read on PA.

I have also been reading many replies from people not having any concerns at all about what may or may not happen in the coming months because they are happy in their conviction about Ascension.

I was addressing the former group, to remind them to keep an open mind and look at many sources, as, for them, Ascension may not satisfy.

I don't consider myself a worrier or an 'ascensionist' - but what I think isn't really my point on this thread. You are right - I shouldn't have started it off by stating my own thoughts - that's confusing! Sorry...

    Contrite best wishes

    Jake

    Thanks for the new resource.

My primary concern is that many members of Avalon got caught up in the Charles thing. I don't know how many are/were seeking reassurance about ascension, a new belief system or new leader to follow, et al. But now that Charles fanaticism is in the past, I wonder how many avalon members are examining how they got duped and what insights they have gained that will help their discernment. I certainly hope they are involved in some introspection.

As another resource with a twist, I recommend an oldie but goodie from the 1950's "The True Believer Thoughts On The Nature Of Mass Movements" by Eric Hoffer. Between 1951 and 2002, over 23 editions have been published. Obviously Hoffer has written text that still seems relevant.

The summary from From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia says

Hoffer argues that all mass movements such as fascism, communism, and religion spread by promising a glorious future. To be successful, these mass movements need the adherents to be willing to sacrifice themselves and others for the future goals. To do so, mass movements need to glorify the past and devalue the present. Mass movements appeal to frustrated people who are dissatisfied with their current state, but are capable of a strong belief in the future. As well, mass movements appeal to people who want to escape a flawed self by creating an imaginary self and joining a collective whole. Some categories of people who may be attracted to mass movements include poor people, misfits, and people who feel thwarted in their endeavors. Hoffer quotes extensively from leaders of the Nazi and communist parties in the early part of the 20th Century, to demonstrate, among other things, that they were competing for adherents from the same pool of people predisposed to support mass movements. Despite the two parties' fierce antagonism, they were more likely to gain recruits from their opposing party than from moderates with no affiliation to either.

I appreciate your recommendation Colin Wilson's Devil's Party.
