Obama Bid To Ease Tensions Over Oil Leak

Barack Obama has sought to smooth over tensions with Britain over the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, saying his criticisms of BP are "nothing to do with national identity"

The US President has come under fire in the UK over his attacks on a company he refers to as "British Petroleum", with many feeling they have an anti-British tone.
But in a 30-minute phone call with David Cameron the two men reaffirmed their belief in "the unique strength of the US-UK relationship".

Mr Obama also made clear he recognised BP was a global company, according to a statement released by 10 Downing Street.

The Prime Minister expressed his "sadness" at the ongoing human and environmental damage caused by the oil leaking from the Deepwater Horizon rig.

He and the President agreed BP should continue to ensure that "all sensible and reasonable" steps are taken to deal with the disaster.

Earlier BP was ordered by the US Coast Guard to step up its efforts to stop the leak and come up with realistic proposals within the next 48 hours.

    BP's Shocking Memo

The Daily Beast shows that BP, in a previous fatal disaster, increased worker risk to save money. Are there parallels with the Gulf explosion?

This is a story about the Three Little Pigs. A lot of dead oil workers. And British Petroleum.

From the minute the Deepwater Horizon offshore rig exploded, BP has hewed to a party line: it did everything it could to prevent the April 20 accident that killed 11 men and has been spewing millions of gallons of crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico ever since. Some critics have questioned the veracity of that position.

Now The Daily Beast has obtained a document—displayed below—that goes to the heart of BP procedures, demonstrating that before the company’s previous major disaster—at a moment when the oil giant could choose between cost-savings and greater safety—it selected cost-savings. And BP chose to illustrate that choice, without irony, by invoking the classic Three Little Pigs fairy tale.

EXCLUSIVE: This internal BP document shows how the company took deadly risks to save money by opting to build cheaper facilities for workers. The company estimated the value of a worker's life at $10 million.

Feds order BP to devise quicker oil collection methods

New Orleans, Louisiana (CNN) -- Federal authorities have ordered BP to get more aggressive with its plans to recover thousands of barrels of oil spewing from a broken well into the Gulf of Mexico, according to a letter made public Saturday.

In Friday's letter, Rear Adm. James Watson, the government's on-scene incident manager, gave BP 48 hours to identify and expedite other ways to contain oil, given new estimates that doubled the amount of crude gushing out every day.

Researchers reported this week that up to 40,000 barrels, or 1.7 million gallons, a day may have escaped from the BP well in the 54 days since the explosion aboard the Deepwater Horizon drilling platform.

That would mean almost 100 million gallons have spewed since the rig exploded. That's many times the amount spilled by the supertanker Exxon Valdez in Alaska's Prince William Sound in 1989.

"It is clear that additional capacity is urgently needed," Watson said in the letter to Doug Suttles, BP's chief operating officer.

"I am concerned that your current plans do not provide for maximum mobilization of resources to provide the needed collection capacity consistent with revised flow rates," Watson said. "I am also concerned that your plan does not go far enough to mobilize redundant resources in the event of an equipment failure with one of the vessels or some other unforeseen problem."
BP has captured some of the gushing oil through a containment cap that has been pumping the crude up to a drilling ship for about a week. It collected 15,500 barrels, or 651,000 gallons, on Friday and has been able to remove a total of 104,300 barrels, or about 4.4 million gallons, from Gulf waters so far.

I have just read a report on the nature of the problem in the Gulf of Mexico that is so clear, graphic, intelligent, comprehensive and human that I've converted it into a PDF for ease of access and sharing. This is MUST READ information. Please click here:

    http://projectavalon.net/The_BP_Deep...n_the_Gulf.pdf

If you didn't understand the problem before, you will if you read this through to the end. It confirms the uncomfortable information in the 8, 9 and 11 June updates: please read these if you have not done so already.

It describes the magnitude of the problem in engineering detail, and states how scared a lot of the engineers are who understand what has happened. In my opinion, everyone needs to educate themselves rapidly on what we have to find a way of dealing with.

The document is in two parts. The first part, written on 11 May, explains how important it was for the 'top kill' operation to succeed. The author confessed that he prayed that it would.

We now know that it failed. The author wrote the second part today. We're now in a situation never before faced by our civilization, and no-one knows for certain what to do.

BP Official Admits to Damage BENEATH THE SEA FLOOR

As I noted Tuesday, there is growing evidence that BP's oil well - technically called the "well casing" or "well bore" - has suffered damage beneath the level of the sea floor.

The evidence is growing stronger and stronger that there is substantial damage beneath the sea floor. Indeed, it appears that BP officials themselves have admitted to such damage. This has enormous impacts on both the amount of oil leaking into the Gulf, and the prospects for quickly stopping the leak this summer.

BP, Halliburton and Transocean have unleashed Armageddon and now there is no stopping it.

B.P, Halliburton and Transocean have unleashed Armageddon and now there is no stopping it. Senator Bill Nelson has told us how bad it is.
This is our worst nightmare. The oil industry has killed the Gulf of Mexico.

My worst fears have been realized. If this link is true and the oil is coming through the sea floor, they have either blown out the formation or blown out the cement (which we know they did anyway to get the blowout to occur). I am beginning to realize why they have not wanted to close the valves on the cap. The more they close it, the more oil is going to come up through the sea floor, next to the well casing.

[goes on to discuss worst case scenarios]

Norwegian workers involved in cleanup and resque operations in mexican gulf since 22.april.
    - Read someone say that there is no foreign company or crew working on the resque and cleanup-operation after the oil blowout
and well brakedown. That is not entirely correct. In norwegian news there has been reports on distress and sickness
(nausea, headaches, coldsweat and general disorientation ..)
from norwegian workers, at present there is 120 of them in the disasterarea (reported 11.june), working on 5 norwegian boats,
engaged in different parts of the operation, including trying to neutralize the toxic gases that comes up with the "oilspill",
    and manage ROVs ( they were there as early as 22.april ). The wessels are «Viking Poseidon», «Skandi Neptun», «Boa DeepC»,
«Rem Forza» and «Ocean Intervention III», that is presently at participating on the different works in the mexico gulf .

Link to news is here ( norwegian articles basicly included for source-checking, can be translated if wanted and there is time for it. )

    ( national tabloid reedit ) http://www.dagbladet.no/2010/06/11/n...lipp/12095008/

Tru comments in the local news I found this base of info on the situation, including ROV-feeds and images.
Maybe this has been posted before. I have not had time to check the solidity or angle of this site, but here it is:
    http://markimoore.com/

BTW: On the 20.may there were reports of evacuation of workers from a norwegian oilplatform in local waters (Gullfaks C) in the north sea.
That platform has been producing since 1989, and was experiencing pressurechanges in a well and failing technical barriers days before 20.may,
and worked on preventing a blowout. 89 was avacuated, and 140 stayed behind to try and remedy the situation, that is now stabile.
(pr 13.6.2010) - A link to national news:

And: One month ago ( reported here 13.may ) a drillingplatform (Aban Pearl, earlyer Bulford Dolphin, built 1977) sank outside Venezuela,
supposedly after taking in water and turning over. All 95 persons resqued safely, and no reports on leaks or spilling. (!?)

Related: read in Kerrys blog about Duncan O'Finioan having visions of the oil as the "lifeblood" ( Lubricant, shockabsorber )
of this planet, and that struck a cord in me as being a valid (truthful, fruitfull) image, and if so then maybe we are the "suckers"
( that be vampires or mosquitos ... ) - feeding off that prescious fluid in a mindless frenzy, on the peril of our own wellbeing
and the harmonic continuing of this whole, holy, excistence.
Interesting to see how many are refering to the colour red, when talking about the DW Horizon-oilspill ( the colour of blood )
Hope to see more on that subject, the very open and inspiring notice found here : ( a bit down on page )
"Duncan O'Finioan weighs in on the intention behind the BP Oil Spill", blog for 31.may.

Its good to be well-informed (some pun intended) and aware about this potential crisis, but good advise not to worry too much.
Be concerned and passionate, but realistic with a constructive optimism to balanse the grief over the disaster.
For most of us it is physical and mental side-effects of it that both hits us, and is most relevant to work on. And to change our ways ...
We act ,and react, were we can and must, and then leave the rest to the world, the universe and faith.
And be glad that your priorities have left you with more choices than a nuclear bomb, when it comes a time to pick a tool for your challenges.
Maybe just go outside and find some simple, grateful activity, to tell the planet ( mother earth, if you will ) that you love and respect her,
    - and we care ...

"We Don't Need This on Camera": BP's Crappy Cleanup Job— By Mac McClelland
    | Fri Jun. 11, 2010 8:55 AM PDT

You know Isle Grande Terre, Louisiana, from the unbelievable pictures of oiled birds taken there last week. It's also the island just to the east of Grand Isle, which I've been reporting on since oil made landfall there several weeks ago. I wanted to check up on Grande Terre, and so to get there, and avoid a BP escort, yesterday I got in a kayak with my intrepid former literature professor from the University of New Orleans and paddler extraordinaire, Dr. John Hazlett.

On the way, we beached ourselves on an uninhabited spit near Grand Isle State Park. It was completely covered in oil, and there were no cleanup crews in sight.

Oil spill covers geese, ducks in Utah
    (AP) – 13 hours ago

SALT LAKE CITY — A leaked pipeline caused oil to spill into a Salt Lake City creek Saturday, coating geese and ducks and closing a park, officials said.

An estimated 400 to 500 barrels of oil spewed into Red Butte Creek before crews capped the leak site. Nearly 50 gallons of crude oil per minute initially had spilled into the creek, according to Scott Freitag, a Salt Lake City Fire Department spokesman.

"Our real concern is keeping people safe, and keeping the oil from reaching the Great Salt Lake," Frietag told the Deseret News.

Officials were unsure of the cause of the leak, near the University of Utah campus, or the extent of the spill's environmental impact. Mayor Ralph Becker said drinking water for residents was not affected.

"Our fire teams have capped the site and will work to determine the damage and the best course of action," the mayor said in a statement.

Crews were using absorbent booms and creating dams to contain the spill, but officials said some oil had reached as far as the Jordan River, and oil flowed into a pond in the city's Liberty Park, near where residents reported dead fish in their ponds.

A crew was trying to collect and take birds to Hogle Zoo cleaning stations and other facilities, said Brad Park, zoo spokesman.

About 150 birds have been identified for rehabilitation, said Jane Larson, Hogle's animal care supervisor. About 75 percent are Canada geese. Several ducks also were affected.
The pipeline flows to Salt Lake City from Colorado and feeds the city's oil and gas refineries.

Employees at the Veteran Affairs Hospital first noticed oil in the stream just before 7 a.m. Officials then traced the spill to the pipe near Red Butte Garden. Freitag said the pipeline was shut off about 7:45 a.m.

"Chevron is taking full responsibility for this pipeline leak," Chevron spokesman Mark Sullivan told the Salt Lake Tribune. "We're taking full responsibility for any financial damage, environmental damage, safety concerns, impacts on health and cleanup."

Oil spill in Red Butte Creek threatens waters, wildlife

SALT LAKE CITY — Containment of a crude oil spill estimated at around 20,000 gallons into Red Butte Creek is expected to last well into the night and continue through Sunday as multiple agencies work to mitigate impacts to the stream and wildlife.

The fracture of the Chevron pipeline sent oil gushing into the riparian corridor, leaving the thick, tacky substance clinging to rocks, soil and any fish and birds in its path.

A biology teacher from Rowland Hall watched with dismay the stream "running black" on Saturday.

The creek that runs through his backyard and normally gives him such delight instead swamped the morning air with a horrible smell.

"It stinks and it is toxic," Peter Hayes said. "Whatever is in that creek will die. I have so little faith in oil companies to take care of this."

Even as the BP Gulf Coast oil tragedy and its stumbling cleanup efforts continue to dominate the news, Salt Lake City awakened Saturday morning to its own ecological disaster winding its way through Salt Lake neighborhoods and turning Liberty Park into a command center.

Where children would normally play and chase ducks, those same waterfowl were coated with the gooey substance, helplessly trying to groom the oil off themselves.

Massive cleanup effort underway after oil leak in Red Butte Canyon

SALT LAKE CITY -- A massive effort is underway to clean up the damage left behind when a Chevron pipeline leaked up to 21,000 gallons of oil into Salt Lake City waterways Saturday.

Crews capped the site of a leak, which was spilling oil into Red Butte Creek. As of 4 p.m. Friday, officials said they had the flow slowed to just two to three gallons per minute.

Chevron officials have confirmed the pipeline was shut off around 7:45 a.m., but warn residual oil was still leaking at the fracture point.

Though the site of the leak has been contained, officials estimate up to 500 barrels of oil have already been released.

The Salt Lake Valley Health Department says the oil has reached the Jordan River down to 1300 South and appears to be continuing into the Great Salt Lake.

Liberty Park was closed to the public and will likely remain closed for weeks as crews work to clean up the mess.

    Leak detected

Before officials knew anything was happening, Red Butte Creek was running grotesque shades of black and brown. People walking their dogs noticed a stench permeating the city's east side.

Oil container washes ashore in Florida

A larger container with BP markings washes ashore Saturday on a part of a beach in Panama City, Florida.
(CNN) -- A portion of beach in Panama City, Florida, was closed Saturday after a large oil container with BP markings washed ashore, local authorities said.

It was not immediately clear if the container, which was leaking a small amount of oil, came from the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig that exploded April 20 and sank two days later, triggering a massive underwater gusher that has led to the worst environmental disaster in U.S. history.

The large, stainless steel tank about the size of a refrigerator washed up on the west end of Panama City Beach and was discovered shortly after 9 a.m. Saturday, Bay County sheriff's Deputy Ray Maulbeck told CNN.

The container has a capacity of 550 gallons of oil, but Maulbeck said officials didn't know how much oil was in the tank.

BP officials could not be immediately reached for comment.
Panama City has not yet seen tar balls or any other evidence of the spill reach its shoreline, according to Bay County spokeswoman Valerie Lovett.

"It was about six foot tall and about three or four feet deep," Lovett said. "They took it over to the local Coast Guard station and I was told it's going to be taken to Louisiana, to be laid down with other items similar to that -- that are being considered evidence in the investigation."

The beach is set to reopen Sunday, authorities said.

Epidemic Hazard for Venice La. – Corexits Reign of Terror

As information regarding the possible evacuation of the Gulf pours in, we now have reports that an epidemic hazard was issued almost two weeks ago. According to RSOE EDIS, a website that has a close partnership with the Hungarian government, this hazard was issued for Venice Louisiana on May 26th, 2010. Reports of nausea and trouble breathing due to the toxic dispersant known as Corexit, seems to be flooding in.

In their two week old report, RSOE stated that British Petroleum workers from all over the Gulf have been getting sick at an alarming rate. Furthermore, the epidemic hazard was declared less than 100 km from an area with a population of over 3 million.

    ...

EXTREME ALERT — Gulf Coast Evacuation Contingency Plans Soon to Go Operational: The operational name for the Gulf Coast Evacuation is "Swift Fox". Yesterday morning at around 8:30 Mountain time, I received information that specific towns, in Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama, Mississippi, Texas and Georgia were having hotel rooms rented in mass by different named "Societies" using Federal government credit cards. The block hotel room rentals are for half the available rooms in hotels with a minimum of 120 rooms. Specific conversations were "overheard" that would indicate that the planned Gulf Coast evacuation is soon to be implemented. The only scenario I hear that may force the government to evacuate the coast is a multiple plume situation. Apparently, the unmitigated oil spilling has caused a pressure flux which, ironically, has caused a spider web network of Gulf seabed fissures, which has caused at least one other confirmed oil plume. NOAA is searching for two more suspected ones". This quote is from an insider who is really concerned as he should be. Here's additional info he provided. His comments in the following quote: "I know FEMA has already scoped out FEMA camp locations, i.e. vacant lots and swaths of land that can be leased temporarily in Texas and Georgia".

The inside guy said it is up to the President to give the go-signal. There is an evacuation plan drafted and in place, ready for execution only *if* the administration deems it necessary. That can happen two ways. FEMA makes an emergency declaration with recommendation to POTUS (President of the US) for an evacuation or 2/3 of the Gulf States request federal help for an evac. States can individually declare an evacuation of their Gulf residents, but that would be a state action only, not FEMA/Federal".

One week ago I was given a "vision of bread" while praying for wisdom. I saw a piece of bread being ripped apart as you would tear apart a sandwich from the bottom up. Imagine holding a sandwich in both hands and pressing your thumbs through the center of the bread and then tearing the bread, ripping it apart into two sections!

I wondered why the Lord would give me the Bread Vision, and then it became apparent. FAMINE is going to explode through the land as a result of the Gulf of Mexico's sea floor rupturing! Yesterday, as I pondered all that's going on, I received an image of a jig saw puzzle with all the interrelated pieces being broken apart, and being tied to this event taking place in the Gulf. The famine that is coming to the US is heartbreaking in it's ramifications. The slaughter and devastation is unimaginable. As the Great Quake literally tears apart the US mainland, all America's external enemies including those "enemies within" will seek to destroy and devour that which is left and flee, but they will not succeed. THEY WILL BE STOPPED BY ALMIGHTY GOD HIMSELF. THE DESTRUCTION THEY HAVE PLANNED FOR THE INNOCENT WILL BE SUPERNATURALLY TURNED AGAINST THEM!

I will be publishing the prophecy that the Lord has given me at His appointed time. I want to personally thank all of the Lord's intercessors who pray for me daily that I might warn and help prepare those who have eyes to see and ears to hear. I urge every one who understands the lateness of the hour to get their hearts right before the Living God, as the time comes when only the power of an individual's relationship with God and the power of prayer will get us through the most perilous time period in ALL HISTORY! —Stephen Quayle

Kennedy to Jindal: Prepare for BP bankruptcy

State Treasurer John Kennedy is asking Gov. Bobby Jindal to prepare for the possibility of BP filing for bankruptcy.

“I am not suggesting to you that BP will or is about to file for bankruptcy. I am suggesting to you that it is a possibility,” Kennedy wrote the governor this week.

Kennedy is offering to work with the Jindal administration to develop a plan.

Wall Street is kicking around the possibility that BP will file for bankruptcy and merge with another company to limit the liabilities stemming from the April 20 rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico. Multiple states, including Louisiana, already are being impacted by the massive oil leak.

Texaco filed for bankruptcy in 1987 after a jury ordered the company to pay Pennzoil $1 billion.

BP has denied in published reports that it is seeking legal advice on filing for bankruptcy.

In his letter, Kennedy said Jindal seems to be predicating his plans to remediate the leak and compensate those affected on BP’s ability to pay.

    BP bailout proposal coming soon

Get ready for the BP bailout debate. As the most hated company in America led by the most despised CEO in business continues its systematic deceptions about the magnitude of the catastrophe, its systematic secrecy and threats of reprisal against employees who speak the truth in public and its systematic blockade against reporters seeking the basic facts, get ready for the mother of all political debates.

When the full damage of the oil is calculated, and the full payment of restitution is required and the full consequences of lawsuits are understood and the monetary consequences of such enormous personal and economic misery are realized, BP will tell us that we face the choice of BP going bankrupt and being unable to pay its debts or receiving a government bailout so it can meet its obligations from the damage it has done.

We will be told that BP is too big to fail.

Prediction: Before the rooster crows another 60 times, BP will be seeking a government bailout. If you thought the Wall Street bailout debate was nasty, wait until you see the BP bailout debate.

There should be NO bailout of BP paid for by ANY taxpayer, period, end of discussion, over and out. If necessary there should be a fund paid for by all of the oil companies doing offshore drilling, as the price of their doing business off our shores and as the incentive to make sure this does not happen again.

Scientists Warn Gulf Of Mexico Sea Floor Fractured Beyond Repair

A dire report circulating in the Kremlin today that was prepared for Prime Minister Putin by Anatoly Sagalevich of Russia's
Shirshov Institute of Oceanology warns that the Gulf of Mexico sea floor has been fractured “beyond all repair” and our World should begin preparing for an ecological disaster “beyond comprehension” unless “extraordinary measures” are undertaken to stop the massive flow of oil into our Planet’s eleventh largest body of water.

Most important to note about Sagalevich’s warning is that he and his fellow scientists from the Russian Academy of Sciences are the only human beings to have actually been to the Gulf of Mexico oil leak site after their being called to the disaster scene by British oil giant BP shortly after the April 22nd sinking of the Deepwater Horizon oil platform.

BP’s calling on Sagalevich after this catastrophe began is due to his being the holder of the World’s record for the deepest freshwater dive and his expertise with Russia’s two Deep Submergence Vehicles MIR 1 and MIR 2 [photo below] which are able to take their crews to the depth of 6,000 meters (19,685 ft).

According to Sagalevich’s report, the oil leaking into the Gulf of Mexico is not just coming from the 22 inch well bore site being shown on American television, but from at least 18 other sites on the “fractured seafloor” with the largest being nearly 11 kilometers (7 miles) from where the Deepwater Horizon sank and is spewing into these precious waters an estimated 2 million gallons of oil a day.

Interesting to note in this report is Sagalevich stating that he and the other Russian scientists were required by the United States to sign documents forbidding them to report their findings to either the American public or media, and which they had to do in order to legally operate in US territorial waters.

Use Mississippi River to stop the oil

Editor's note: G. Paul Kemp, Ph.D., is vice president, Louisiana Coastal Initiative, for the National Audubon Society. A former associate research professor at Louisiana State University, he served in the early 1990s as the first executive director of the Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana, a nonprofit organization dedicated to returning Louisiana's Mississippi River delta to environmental and economic sustainability.

(CNN) -- Every catastrophe has its unsung heroes. In BP's oil spill disaster, one such hero is not a person but a river: the Mississippi River. But the river's strength is flagging, and unless our leaders change what the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is doing, things could get a lot worse for our coastal marshes.

Many people know that the Mississippi River flows through the Crescent City, New Orleans, Louisiana; but fewer are aware that this is only one of two paths it takes to the Gulf. The Mississippi divides to create its delta upstream of Baton Rouge at a place called Old River. The Atchafalaya River is the western channel. In 1963, the Corps built a dam with sluice gates at Old River between the Mississippi and Atchafalaya to keep the shorter Atchafalaya route from "capturing" the whole river. Later, they built more structures to gain better control.

Today, every drop of water that goes down either the Mississippi or the Atchafalaya marches to the orders of the U.S. Army, which traditionally seeks to maintain a constant 70-to-30 percent split -- with the larger amount going to the main-stem Mississippi -- between the two river branches, by adjusting the gates at Old River on a daily basis.

BP Hit With £1.1bn Bill For US Oil Spill

BP has already spent $1.6bn (£1.1bn) containing the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, it has announced.

The figure includes $350m (£239m) spent in the last week, boosted by emergency payments of $25m (£17m) each to the states of Florida, Alabama and Mississippi.

A total of 51,000 compensation claims have now been made against BP since the leak began - 26,500 of which it has already paid out on, costing £42m.

The firm is also spending £245m to build barrier islands off the Louisiana coast to limit the environmental damage.

Energy Secretary Chris Huhne is to make a statement on the latest situation to MPs this afternoon.

Local residents and businesses there are becoming increasingly frustrated by the response to the spill from both BP and the US government.

Sally Arthy, Sky News Washington Editor
In a statement BP said that it was working to "protect the shoreline of the Gulf of Mexico, and to collect and clean up any oil that has reached shore".

The firms board is meeting in London to discuss deferring its dividend payment until the oil spill has been contained, following intense US pressure.

Uncertainty over BP’s dividend payment, which accounts for £1 in every £7 paid out to UK pension funds, has seen the company's share price plummet over recent weeks.

It is now worth nearly half what it was when the Deepwater Horizon rig sank on April 22, causing the oil leak.
